We’re used to balancing too many things, making compromises. It’s part of being a family, we thought. Then we discovered The Homestead. Miles of pristine beaches, luxury accommodations, great restaurants, superb recreation and the dunes. Sometimes, it’s all right to be uncompromising.

Offering uncompromising experiences for all occasions. Glen Arbor, MI 49636 | thehomesteadresort.com | 231 334 5000

You know vacations are going to be first-class where sugar-sand beaches edge into azure waters and romantic vineyards and orchards decorate beautiful rolling hills. Toss in a food and microbrew scene that makes the likes of summertime resident and celebrity chef Mario Batali swoon, and add postcard-pretty villages filled with boutiques and galleries, and you will understand why no one leaves this peninsula without falling in love with it. Enjoy this guide to everything that makes Leelanau County special!

GLEN ARBOR A true resort town with a front row seat for sunsets over Lake Michigan’s Sleeping Bear Bay, Glen Arbor is completely surrounded by the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore with all of its beaches, trails and more. The downtown is a lively scene, with galleries, boutiques, restaurants, souvenir shops and the perennial favorite totally cherry-themed experience, Cherry Republic. Lake St., paddle the Crystal River, bike the Sleeping Bear Dunes Heritage Trail and wine-taste at three in-town wine tasting venues that all feature local wines. visitglenarbor.com. BEACH DAYS! Three roads in this perfectly appointed Lake Michigan town lead to lovely slices of public beach—and unforgettable sunsets over Sleeping Bear Point and the Manitou Islands. Find Bay Road off M22 about a mile north of town. In town, both S. Lake (at the Lake Michigan boat launch) and S. Manitou streets end at the beach. Parking is on the street, or behind the township hall on Western Avenue (M22). Feel like you need more elbow room around your towel? Beaches in the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore roll out just outside of town. nps.gov/slbe.

Find beaches galore in and around this fun and relaxed coastal town. Not only is it headquarters of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (and the park’s plethora of sandy shoreline), but Empire also boasts one of the best in-town Lake Michigan beaches anywhere. When you’re not lounging in the sand, shop sweet boutiques, belly up at either of two classic Up North bars, hike the Empire Bluffs, pedal off on the 17-mile-long Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail, or rent an SUP and go for a paddle. empirechamber.com.

M

MUST DO Empire hosts some crazy fun festivals including the Asparagus Festival, May 15–17, Anchor Day, July 15 and the Hops Festival October, 7. Tickets for fun, festivals and more! MyNorthTickets.com.

GET ON THE WATER Surf, Paddleboard or Kayak: Rentals and lessons at Sleeping Bear Surf & Kayak in Empire. sbsurfandkayak.com.

GOLF Hit up the affordable and casual par-72 Dunes Golf Course or its Dune Valley driving range across the street. 231.326.5390, dunesgolf.com.

EMPIRE HERITAGE MUSEUM See a one-room schoolhouse, a turn-of-the-last century saloon, blacksmith shop and more. 231.326.5568, michigan.org/property/empire-area-museum.

BIKE The Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail starts just north of town here and unfurls its (mostly) paved splendor past the Dune Climb to north of Glen Arbor; 17 miles long. sleepingbeartrail.org. Rent Bikes: Empire Outdoors, 231.326.5433, empiremioutdoors.com.

BEACH DAYS! Two beaches here: A wide sandy beach where the Lake Michigan surf rolls in big and bold and, across the parking lot, warm, shallow South Bar Lake. Restrooms, playground, picnic tables and grills all add up to a heavenly beach day. Follow signs from downtown.

SLEEPING BEAR DUNES NATIONAL LAKESHORE Inspiration and relaxation are spelled out in the 35-mile shoreline of towering dunes, beaches and Caribbean-colored waters that make up the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Did we mention two gloriously uninhabited islands? If you’ve never been, this place is a must. If you have been, you know why you are coming back. Here’s your up-close-and-personal guide to the long and lovely Leelanau County stretch of this national park. MUST DO Dune Climb Concert July 9, 7 p.m.: The Jimmys belt out their horn-based blues at this annual outdoor concert set at the base of the Sleeping Bear Dune Climb. Bring your beach chairs, blankets and snacks, 231.334.6112, glenarborart.org. Tickets for fun, festivals and more! MyNorthTickets.com.

BEACH DAYS! One of Lake Michigan’s best destination beaches is located in the historic ghost town of Glen Haven, on M109 a couple miles west of Glen Arbor. Too crowded? Turn left at the water and find miles of sandy beach. The gorgeous beaches of Lake Michigan’s Good Harbor Bay can be accessed off M22 at the ends of CR669 and CR651. There’s superb sand here, but a left at the end of CR669 leads you to where sweet, shallow Shalda Creek flows into Lake Michigan. From Empire take M22 north then turn west on Voice Road and wind your way to the popular North Bar Beach where a shallow channel connects North Bar Lake to Lake Michigan.

HIKE The Dune Climb is the most popular attraction in the park. Climb to the top of this giant sand mountain and find views of the Glen Lakes (including the Little Glen beach across the road where you can rinse the sand off when you are finished playing on the dune!) and the historic DH Day Barn—then run and tumble your way down. Find the Dune Climb 5 miles north of Empire on M109. Find the trailhead for the 1.5-mile round-trip Empire Bluffs hike on Wilco Road, just a stone’s throw south of the visitors center. A short climb climaxes at a wide-open view of sparkling Lake Michigan, South Manitou Island and a meandering stretch of shoreline. The Dune Climb is the takeoff point for the 3-mile round-trip hike to Lake Michigan. This immersion into the dune ecosystem is rewarded by a cool dip on a pristine Lake Michigan beach. But be forewarned: Walking in sand makes this is a strenuous trip, so make sure you and your hiking pals are physically prepared. Wear sandals with a heel-strap (the sand gets hot, hot, hot!) and pack water, sunscreen, snacks and your cell phone. A half-mile trail off of Port Oneida Road north of Glen Arbor leads to the Pyramid Point Lookout, a breathtaking panorama of water, sky and North and South Manitou Islands. Sunsets are unforgettable. Get the lay of the Sleeping Bear landscape by following the interpretive stops on the 7-mile Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive, which winds through dunes and forests and expansive overlooks. The drive begins on M109, a few miles north of Empire.

HISTORY IS FUN The national park service has taken the hamlet of Glen Haven back to its historic roots, complete with a general store that sells old-fashioned treats and toys, a working blacksmith shop and a wooden boat museum. Maritime history comes alive at the nearby Sleeping Bear Point Coast Guard Station Maritime Museum, where a live reenactment of a shipwreck rescue (in which Raggedy Ann and Andy play the part of the rescued) happens every summer day at 3 p.m. More than a dozen preserved 19th-century farmsteads dot Port Oneida Rural Historic District north of Glen Arbor off of M22. View Trail (trailhead on Thoreson Road). Mark your calendar for the annual Port Oneida fair, held August 11 and 12 in 2017.

PADDLE Slow, shallow and easily navigable, the Crystal River winds through Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, making it ideal for wildlife watching. Wear your water shoes because you’ll want to get out and play, and be ready to shoot the culvert under CR675. Find rentals at Crystal River Outfitters in Glen Arbor. 231.334.4420, crystalriveroutfitters.com.

BIKE The Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail stretches from north of Empire all the way to Bohemian Road (near Good Harbor beach), north of the Port Oneida Rural Historic District—a distance of 17 miles. The trail is paved with the exception of two short stretches north of Glen Arbor: a crushed aggregate section through the Port Oneida district and a boardwalk through a wetland along Westman Road. sleepingbeartrail.org. Rent Bikes: In Empire at Empire Outdoors, 231.326.5433, empiremioutdoors.com. In Glen Arbor at Crystal River Outfitters, 231.334.4424, crystalriveroutfitters.com.

SET SAIL FOR THE ISLANDS North and South Manitou Island adventures begin with a trip across Lake Michigan’s Manitou Passage on a Manitou Island Transit ferry. North Manitou is a wilderness area and is managed for backcountry camping. Find miles of wooded and shoreline trails, an inland lake and a handful of historic cottages. South Manitou is managed for both daytrips and backcountry camping. The beautiful island has a 19th-century lighthouse, an ancient stand of virgin cedars known as the Valley of the Giants, and motorized tours of what was once a bustling pioneer community. Camping on both islands is primitive and by reservation: 877.444.677 or online at recreation.gov. The ferry schedule varies by time of year—check the website. Reservations at 231.256.9061, manitoutransit.com.

MAPLE CITY

Browse the shanty-boutiques of Fishtown—an authentic historic Great Lakes fishing shanty town—watch boats putt in and out of the Leland harbor, charter a fishing trip, hop the ferry to the Manitou Islands, check out the fabulous shops in the village (taste wine and spirits along the way) then take a table at one of the fabulous restaurants in this charming village. lelandmi.com.

This tiny, scenic town got its start as a shoe-peg factory set amid a swath of maple timber. The village’s original name, Pegtown Station, lives on at the Pegtown Station restaurant, home to some of the best pizza and breakfasts around. Find great smoked meats here at Gabe’s Country Market, and pick your own blueberries and raspberries in season at Westover Market.

MUST DO Leland Wine & Food Festival, Saturday, June 10. Wine, brew, food tasting and live music under the tent at the Leland Harbor. lelandmi.com. Tickets for fun, festivals and more! MyNorthTickets.com.

BEACH DAYS! Follow Cedar St. (at Van’s Garage) west to Lake Michigan at road’s end. A short trail leads you to Hall Beach, a prime stretch of frontage that cozies up to Fishtown. The big lake too cold? Check out Nedow’s Bay beach on Lake Leelanau. Head north on M22, right on Pearl St. and take it to the end.

MUST DO Head north on Maple City Road to M22 where you’ll find two dining gems across from Little Traverse Lake and surrounded by countryside: Market22 serves up fabulous sandwiches and pizza. 231.228.6422, market22mi. com; Little Traverse Inn Gastro Pub has brew, burgers and even some Scottish treats (haggis!). 231.228.2560, littletraverseinn.com.

EXPLORE FISHTOWN This wharf and its collection of authentic Great Lakes fishing shanties is home to boutiques, eateries and the century-old Carlson’s Fishery, where the smoked fish is legendary. Fishtown is also homeport for a number of charter fishing captains who are experts in making sure their clients come back with salmon, lake trout steelhead and brown trout. To charter a boat out of Leland, go to michigancharterboats.com > Lake Michigan > Leland.

IN-TOWN WINE AND SPIRITS TASTINGS Verterra Winery & Tasting Room: 103 E. River St., Leland, 231.256.2115, verterrawinery.com. Grand Traverse Distillery: 110 Lake St., N-3, Leland, 231.256.0128, grandtraversedistillery.com.

MANITOU ISLAND TRANSIT FERRY The ferry makes daily runs to the national park’s uninhabited Manitou Islands for daytrips and camping. For a smaller adventure, opt for the ferry line’s 1.5-hour evening Shoreline Cruise and watch the sun set over the lake. 231.256.9061, manitoutransit.com.

CEDAR This village in the middle of Leelanau Peninsula is full of surprises, including a great yarn shop, jewelry store, a couple of galleries and a bustling taco stand/hydro farm south of town. GOLF The serenely beautiful Arnold Palmer–designed Manitou Passage Golf Course is set in the gorgeous Leelanau landscape below Sugar Loaf Mountain. A challenging course that welcomes players of all levels. Nicely appointed Arnie’s Grill makes for a great lunch or drink break. 231.228.6000, manitoupassagegolfclub.com.
