We’re used to balancing too many things, making compromises. It’s part of being a family, we thought. Then we discovered The Homestead. Miles of pristine beaches, luxury accommodations, great restaurants, superb recreation and the dunes. Sometimes, it’s all right to be uncompromising.

SLEEPING BEAR DUNES NATIONAL LAKESHORE
If you’ve never witnessed the 111 square miles of inspiration that are Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, then you’ll want to put these tawny dunes towering over aquamarine waters on your bucket list. Already been to Sleeping Bear Dunes? Then you understand that a soul can never soak in enough of the scenery. Here’s your insider’s guide to the long and lovely Leelanau County stretch of this national park: PHILIP A. HART VISITORS CENTER The park visitors center is in Empire, at the southwest corner of Leelanau County. Purchase your park pass here, take in exhibits and a slide show and learn about ranger-led interpretive programs.
GO TO THE BEACH! North Bar Beach is where a shallow channel connects North Bar Lake to Lake Michigan. About 2 miles north of Empire. From Empire go north on LaCore Road to right on Voice Road then left on North Bar Lake Road. The gorgeous beaches of Lake Michigan’s Good Harbor Bay can be accessed off M22 at the ends of CR669 and CR651. There’s superb sand here, and a left at the end of CR669 leads you to where sweet, shallow Shalda Creek flows into Lake Michigan. One of Lake Michigan’s most spectacular destination beaches is at the historically restored town of Glen Haven, on M109 a couple miles west of Glen Arbor. Too crowded? Turn left at the water and find miles of sandy beach.
HIKE Find the trailhead for the 1.5-mile round-trip Empire Bluffs hike on Wilco Road, just a stone’s throw south of the visitors center. A short climb climaxes 40 stories above Lake Michigan and delivers a view of sparkling water, South Manitou Island and a meandering stretch of shoreline. The Dune Climb is the takeoff point for a 3-mile round-trip hike to Lake Michigan. This immersion into the dune ecosystem is rewarded by a cool dip on a pristine Lake Michigan beach. But be forewarned: this is a strenuous trip, so make sure you and your hiking pals are physically prepared. Wear sandals with a heel-strap (the sand gets hot, hot, hot—bare feet and flip-flops don’t work!) and pack water, sunscreen, snacks and your cell phone.
k Park entrance fees run from $7 to $20 (for an annual pass). For information on purchasing them: 231.326.4700, nps.gov/slbe/planyourvisit/fees.htm.

A half-mile trail off Port Oneida Road north of Glen Arbor leads to Pyramid Point. A breathtaking panorama of water, sky and North and South Manitou Islands. Sunsets are unforgettable.
PIERCE STOCKING SCENIC DRIVE Get the lay of the Sleeping Bear landscape by following the interpretive stops on the 7-mile drive that winds through dunes and forests and offers expansive overlooks. The drive begins on M-109, 3 miles north of Empire.
DUNE CLIMB This mountain of a sandbox is a must-do. Climb to the top for views of the Glen Lakes (including the Little Glen beach across the road where you can rinse the sand off when you are finished playing on the dune!) and the historic D.H. Day Barn—then run and tumble your way down. Find the Dune Climb 5 miles north of Empire on M109. MyNorth 2016 Vacation Guide

Premier Waterfront Lake Leelanau HISTORY IS FUN The national park service has taken the hamlet of Glen Haven back to its historic roots, complete with a general store that sells old-fashioned treats and toys, a working blacksmith shop and a wooden boat museum next door. Maritime history comes alive at the nearby Sleeping Bear Point Coast Guard Station Maritime Museum, where a live reenactment of a shipwreck rescue (in which Raggedy Ann & Andy play the part of the rescued) happens every summer day at 3 p.m. More than a dozen preserved 19th-century farmsteads dot Port Oneida Rural Historic District north of Glen Arbor off M22. See many of the farms from the road, or strike out on the Bayview Trail (trailhead on Thoreson Road). Mark your calendar for the annual Port Oneida fair, held August 12 and 13 in 2016.
PADDLE AND FISH Slow, shallow and beautiful, the Crystal River winds through Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Shoot the culverts under CR675. Find rentals at Crystal River Outfitters in Glen Arbor. 231.334.4420, crystalriveroutfitters.com.

Bloody Good!
The Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail stretches from north of Empire all the way to Bohemian Road (and Good Harbor beach) north of the Port Oneida Rural Historic District—a distance of over 17 miles. The trail is paved with the exception of two short stretches north of Glen Arbor: a crushed aggregate section through the Port Oneida District and a boardwalk through a wetland along Westman Road. sleepingbeartrail.org.

SET SAIL FOR THE ISLANDS North and South Manitou Island adventures begin with the trip across Lake Michigan’s Manitou Passage on a Manitou Island Transit ferry. The ferry to South Manitou runs daily in the summer, so you can daytrip or camp overnight on this beautiful island with its 19th-century lighthouse, ancient stand of virgin cedars known as the Valley of the Giants, and motorized tours of what was once a bustling pioneer community. The ferry stops only once a day on North Manitou, so you’ll have to spend the night in one of the rustic campsites. Find miles of wooded and shoreline trails, an inland lake and historic cottages.

GLEN ARBOR
This laid-back coastal town is the gateway to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Shop sweet boutiques, belly up at either of two classic Up North bars, hike the Empire Bluffs, pedal off on the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail, rent a SUP and go for a paddle, or just lounge at one of the best beaches on Lake Michigan. empirechamber.com.
A resort town with a front row seat for sunsets over Lake Michigan’s Sleeping Bear Bay, Glen Arbor is surrounded by the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and all of its beaches, trails and more. Downtown is a lively scene, with galleries, boutiques, restaurants and souvenir shops. Put your boat in for a day on Sleeping Bear Bay at the north end of S. Lake Street, paddle the Crystal River, bike the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail, grab a table and dine outside anywhere they serve food in this town, and wine taste at two tasting rooms. visitglenarbor.com.
DON’T MISS Empire hosts some crazy fun festivals including the Asparagus Festival, May 20–22 and the Hops Festival, Oct.1.
GOLF Hit up the affordable and casual par-72 Dunes Golf Course or its Dune Valley driving range across the street. 231.326.5390, dunesgolf.com.

GO TO THE BEACH! Three roads in this perfectly appointed Lake Michigan town lead to lovely slices of public beach—and unforgettable sunsets over Sleeping Bear Point and the Manitou Islands. Find Bay Road off M22 about a mile north of town. In town, both S. Lake (at the Lake Michigan boat launch) and S. Manitou streets end at the beach. Parking is on the street or behind the township hall on Western Avenue (M22).
FISH With the Crystal River, Lake Michigan, the Glen Lakes and a handful of smaller lakes at its doorstep, Glen Arbor is a fishing mecca. Known for authentic Polish sausage and smoked meats, this quiet village in the middle of Leelanau Peninsula is full of other surprises, too, including a worthy yarn shop, jewelry store/gallery, and a bustling taco stand/hydro farm.
Watch boats putt in and out of the harbor, charter a fishing trip, hop the ferry to the Manitou Islands, browse the shantyboutiques of Fishtown—then take a table at one of the fabulous restaurants in this charming village. lelandmi.com.

There is no way to spot a car since the river mouth is a swamp, so be prepared to paddle back. leelanauconservancy.org.

The village’s original name, Pegtown Station, lives on at the Pegtown Station restaurant, home to some of the best pizza and breakfasts around. GO TO THE BEACH! Follow Cedar Street (at Van’s Garage) west to Lake Michigan at road’s end. A short trail leads you to Hall Beach, a prime stretch of frontage that cozies up to Fishtown. The big lake too cold? Check out Nedow’s Bay beach on Lake Leelanau. Head north on M22, right on Pearl Street to the end.
EXPLORE FISHTOWN A wharf and a collection of authentic Great Lakes fishing shanties is home to boutiques, eateries and the century-old Carlson’s Fishery, where the smoked fish is legendary. Fishtown is also homeport for a number of charter fishing captains who are experts in making sure clients come back with salmon, lake trout, steelhead and brown trout. To charter a boat out of Leland go to michigancharterboats.com > Lake Michigan > Leland. The Manitou Island Transit ferry also calls Fishtown home. The ferry makes daily runs to the uninhabited Manitou Islands. For a smaller adventure, opt for the ferry line’s 1.5-hour evening Shoreline Cruise, and watch the sun set over the big lake. 231.256.9061, manitoutransit.com.
SUMMER ART The Old Art Building and Community Cultural Center, on Main Street in Leland, has a packed schedule of classes and other events: oldartbuilding.com.
STELLAR HIKES The Whaleback Natural Area consists of a mile-long trail that leads to a bluff 300 feet above Lake Michigan and a viewing platform that takes in the breathtaking Manitou Passage. Find the trailhead at 1639 N. Manitou Trail. The Clay Cliffs Natural Area offers up views of both Lake Leelanau and Lake Michigan. Find the trailhead on M22, 2.5 miles north of Leland. Both natural areas are a part of the Leelanau Conservancy. leelanauconservancy.org.
