EDUCATION IS “U.P.” HERE, LITERALLY. “This summer I conducted research on the impact of rock climbing on lichen in the Upper Peninsula. This allowed me to combine my passion for rock climbing with my science curriculum, all while getting to explore the U.P. I have been able to enhance my connection to the natural world, all while relating to topics covered in biology classes. I consider myself lucky to go to a school in such an amazing area. I can’t imagine being anywhere else.”

1 MCCART Y’S COVE = Among the most popular of Marquette beaches is McCarty’s Cove, beloved for its expansive view of Lake Superior and the historic Harbor Lighthouse. Throw in some volleyball nets and lifeguard supervision during high season, and you’ve pretty much guaranteed yourselves a good, safe time for all. Close to our vibrant downtown, McCarty’s Cove is the perfect place to launch sandy, shoreline fun with the family. 2 LIT TLE PRESQUE BEACH = As secluded as it is scenic, Little Presque beach, nestled on the shores of Superior, is one of the coolest spots to chill out by the water, without the crowds. Locals head here for perfect days or kicked-back evenings. Pathways—rocky, scenic and accessible—spool out nearby, so fit in a trail run or family hike. 3 BL ACK ROCKS BEACH = Located on Presque Isle’s west side, the beach itself is only a few dozen feet wide, with several-story bluffs on both sides. But it’s the best place to prepare for an excursion — and, if you’re feeling brave enough, you can even jump from the Black Rocks themselves. 4 SOUTH BEACH = Just south of downtown along the city bike trail, South Beach is broad, smooth and also super kid- and dog-friendly, making it perfect for both lying and playing under the sun, all day long. Lifeguard on duty during peak visitation.

PUT THESE THREE WATERFALLS ON YOUR LIST, AND CHECK THEM OFF, ALTHOUGH WE DON’T RECOMMEND RUSHING...
YELLOW DOG FALLS = The pathway to Yellow Dog Falls is as scenic as the falls themselves. From the trailhead, it’s an easy hike to these wilderness falls. Native brook trout—Michigan’s State Fish—swim lazily in rocky pools. 5 miles up river is Pinnacle Falls (pictured below). It’s a separate hike and requires at least a half day—longer if you stop to pick the lush blueberry patches in late summer.
DEAD RIVER FALLS = If you’re looking for adventure, Dead River Falls has you covered. With more than four series of falls to find, you’re bound to have a good time. Full disclosure: the higher you get, the trickier the trek, but it’s definitely worth the effort.
DEAD RIVER FALLS

MORGAN FALLS = If there were a difficulty rating for Marquette waterfall access, Morgan Falls would be the bunny hill. Nevertheless, Morgan Falls is a must-visit for all ages.

1 NOQUEMANON TRAIL NET WORK (NTN) = Most people know these trails as the “South Trails” or “North Trails.” The NTN trail system is built with all rider styles and skills in mind — flow, technical, jump, freeride, DH, dual slalom and kids/beginner trails.
The singletrack system has received national acclaim as a premier mountain bike destination in several publications, including Bike Magazine, Singletracks, Freehub, Dirtrag, MTBR, Silent Sports Magazine and others. 2 RAMBA = Ride miles of trail in Marquette County’s West End, built over the decades by grassroots trail organization RAMBA (Range Area Mountain Bike Association). The system is a Bronze Level IMBA Ride Center, with trailheads throughout the Iron Range. 3 HARLOW LAKE AREA = With four incredible vistas — Hogback, Top of the World, Sugarloaf, and Bareback — the Harlow Lake area offers some of the most difficult technical riding in the Midwest. While there are some beginner to intermediate routes, most trails are built on rock outcrops with punchy technical climbs and rocky, steep downhills.

MARQUETTE, MICHIGAN —
A FAT-BIKER’S DREAM TOWN. – Outside Magazine, 2018
WINTER ADVENTURES. Marquette County has comfortably made its name as the fat-biking Mecca of the U.S. For years we’ve celebrated the sport and perfected trail-grooming technology, paving the way for competing trail systems across the country. With an average snowfall of 200 inches, 80 miles of groomed singletrack, and three trail networks, we take snow biking and grooming seriously.

Northern Lights
42
1-800-544-4321
WHEN SOLAR STORMS RAGE, THE NORTHERN LIGHTS IGNITE IN UNFORGETTABLE NIGHTS OVER LAKE SUPERIOR. MARQUETTE COUNTY IS ONE OF A FEW LOCATIONS IN THE LOWER 48 WHERE YOU CAN WITNESS THIS PHENOMENON FIRST-HAND.
TRACKING THE BEAUTY. Your odds of catching the northern lights are uncertain, but it’s surely worth a shot, and Marquette County just happens to be the perfect spot. The dark sky over Lake Superior is an awesome backdrop for a light show, without even having to leave the city. MCCARTY’S COVE = On this sandy beach located minutes from downtown, see the aurora borealis alongside another light display—the beam of the Marquette Harbor Lighthouse —which has swept Lake Superior for more than 150 years. PRESQUE ISLE PARK, AKA BLACKROCKS = This park provides the depth, the darkness and the feeling that you are miles away from the city, even though you haven’t left town. Just remember, the park closes at 11:00 p.m. in the summer and 8:00 p.m. in the winter. M-28 BEACH = For a more secluded spot, head out to M-28 Beach. This stretch of sandy shore offers stellar views of the night sky, 11 miles east of the city lights of Marquette. Tracking the northern lights takes patience, persistence, and probably luck. Improve your odds by checking the weather for clear skies and downloading a reputable app that offers aurora predictions.

BIG BAY THE HISTORIC TOWN OF BIG BAY BEGAN AS “RED TOWN,” ON THE SHORES OF LAKE INDEPENDENCE IN NORTHERN MARQUETTE COUNTY.
52
1-800-544-4321
Always a sawmill town, the tiny burg attracted the Brunswick company, which cut bowling pin blanks here in the early 1900s. Brunswick also raised the level of the lake and moved the town to its present location. In 1940 Henry Ford purchased most of the town for its lumber resources. He renovated the hotel for his company and added a post office and private quarters.
Visitors can stay in the Ford Suites and venture out to the Yellow Dog River Waterfalls, Thomas Rock Overlook, Perkins Park Campground, and historic Burns Landing. The Lake Superior shore is minutes away. Enjoy fishing, boating, birding, hiking, swimming, Nordic skiing, snowmobiling, and exploring the many waterfalls and overlooks the area has to offer.
