Great suggestions inside … we encourage stealing! One of the most impressive and fun food trends to emerge in Northern Michigan in recent years is the burgeoning microbrew scene. The brews are inventive, rich, surprising, and, of course, just plain tasty, and all of those same adjectives could equally apply to the venues themselves. The north’s microbrew pubs are smart and special places to gather with friends and colleagues, so we felt that microbrew pubs would likewise make outstanding places to fold into a meeting agenda—ideal venues for unwinding after a long day in a conference room. We checked in with Allison Beers, one of the north’s premier meeting planners, to see what she thought, and she gave that notion an instant two thumbs up: microbrewery meeting spots, heck yeah. The list that writer Heather Durocher compiled offers some fresh and useful suggestions. Check it out. Ms. Durocher’s microbrew story is a perfect example of what we strive to achieve with MyNorth Meetings: rely on our intimate knowledge of
Northern Michigan and serve that up as ideas for meeting planners. Fun ideas. Unexpected ideas. Classic ideas. Water ideas. Dining ideas. Useful ideas. Goodie bag ideas. Our goodie bag idea this issue is gourmet food products from Northern Michigan’s nationally renowned food scene. Give flavor of the North to your attendees and you’ll make an impression that lasts a long time. We call MyNorth Meetings an idea book, and this issue expresses that notion stem to stern. Feel free to steal some. Enjoy!

Places to Meet
Places to Meet
A Landscape for Ideas Let your group find inspiration in Northern Michigan’s nationally acclaimed natural beauty. Each of us understands at an intuitive level that a beautiful natural environment helps us relax, separate from the tasks of the day to day and achieve a greater perspective and clarity on our personal lives. But that same kind of natureinspired fresh perspective and renewed clarity is also valuable in our business lives. When you gather to discuss business in a place like Northern Michigan, surrounded by the world’s largest lakes, thousands of miles of forests, manicured orchards and fresh air, it’s only natural that your colleagues’ ideas will flow more easily, conversation will take on an easier and more open manner, and closer bonds will develop among your team. Northern Michigan stands so high in the world of meetings because it pairs a beautiful natural environment with a sophisticated collection of resorts, meeting spaces, restaurants, golf courses and travel amenities. But don’t just take our word for it. Consider some of the remarkable accolades that Northern Michigan has received in recent years—and what follows is just a small sampling. The highest profile award came in August 2011, when the viewers of Good Morning America voted the Sleeping Bear Dunes the Most Beautiful Place in America. Just a half hour’s drive west
of Traverse City, the sand dunes rise 40 stories above the sparkling blue of Lake Michigan, and the national park’s observation deck delivers an unforgettable view to the western horizon. Other high-profile awards: Travel + Leisure magazine named Traverse City as one of “America’s Favorite Towns.” Fodor’s put Traverse City on its list of “Five Midwestern towns to visit now.” USA Today named Old Mission Peninsula’s M-37 highway one of America’s “Ten great coastal drives.” Or how about Golf Digest’s placing our region among “America’s Top 10 Best Buddies-Trip Golf Destinations.” Bicycling magazine jumped in, naming our area “One of six best cities for a bike vacation,” and even Outside magazine chimed in, placing Traverse City on the list of “18 towns where life is better.” Bon Appetit acknowledged our food scene, naming Traverse City one of America’s five top foodie towns. So, the point is, your group can take in Northern Michigan’s beauty in whatever way works best based on your meeting goals. On a golf course? On a bike? From a lovely lakeside restaurant? From the deck of a boat? It’s all there for you and your colleagues, so when you head back into the meeting room, the ideas are as fresh as Northern Michigan itself.

Meeting success in any season
Why Choose Grand Traverse Resort and Spa? It’s the surprising destination that has it all: expansive meeting space, exceptional golf, exciting group activities, delicious food and drink – and a staff that excels at successful meetings. But it is more than that. It’s the convenience of the Traverse City region that beckons our guests to shop downtown, taste local wines, and experience year-round activities that encourage your attendee’s participation and help you achieve your meeting goals.

Microbrew Venues
Frothy Meetings Northern Michigan’s craft beer scene shows no signs of slowing, and the good news for meeting planners is many of these hot spots open their doors to private parties and provide cool perks like special brewery tours and tastings. Here’s a sampling of what regional microbreweries could offer to your group.
Right Brain Brewery
Microbrew Venues
Right Brain Brewery While this Traverse City brewery doesn’t technically rent space for private parties, its open reservation format allows for many event options, says the brewery’s Leif Kolt. (One example: hosting a local company’s Christmas party for 100 guests.) Right Brain also offers group tours and tastings; reservations are required and groups of 20 or more are split into smaller tour groups. On-site, custom food options such as appetizer trays and buffet-style lunches are available. The brewery’s everyday house menu also is an option. 225 E. 16TH ST., 231.944.1239, TOURS@RIGHTBRAINBREWERY.COM, RIGHTBRAINBREWERY.COM.
Stormcloud Brewing Company Located in downtown Frankfort, Stormcloud, which opened in 2013, welcomes private parties of up to 80 people in the off-season only (mid-October thru mid-May). Special tastings, brew house tours and catering (acclaimed flatbread pizzas) also are available, says brewmaster Brian Confer. 303 MAIN ST., FRANKFORT, 231.352.0118, STORMCLOUDBREWING.COM.
Jolly Pumpkin/Mission Table Space at these side-by-side Old Mission Peninsula restaurants is available depending upon time of year and number of people in the private party, says event director Barbara Olson. Weekdays and off-season weekends offer the most options; Mission Table can accommodate 25 guests, the Peninsula Room (including side patio and front deck) up to 150. Culinary talks and brewery tours are available. 13512 PENINSULA DRIVE, TRAVERSE CITY, 231.944.6984, MISSIONTABLE.NET.
The Workshop Brewing Company This brewery, located in Traverse City’s Warehouse District near downtown, hosts both private and semi-private group gatherings. Reservations depend upon day and time sought, says the brewery’s Robert Strang. Semi-private is typically for groups consisting of 50 or fewer people. The Workshop has food on site and will customize menus. Entertainment is an option. 221 GARLAND ST., TRAVERSE CITY. 231.883.6746, TRAVERSECITYWORKSHOP.COM.
LEIF KOLT
Brewery Ferment This boutique brewery in Traverse City’s Old Town neighborhood rents out space, offering an intimate setting for private parties, given its 45-person capacity. An open-bar set-up is an option. Special tastings are available, and the brewery staff will help connect you with food vendors and plan your menu (outside food also is welcomed). 511 S. Canoeing & Kayaking Paddling one of the area’s rivers is a great way to connect while having fun. Consider your group members’ general experience and skill levels, as well as how long you’d like to be out on the water to ensure everyone has a good time. Charter Fishing & Sailing Sail a ship together or cast lines for a big catch to add a little something different to your group gathering. The tall ship Manitou is a replica of an 1800’s coasting cargo schooner modeled after ships that sailed in the Great Lakes and the Atlantic Ocean. At 114 feet long, she is one of the largest tall ships working the Great Lakes today. She has a 59-person capacity and sails Grand Traverse Bay, 231.941.2000, tallshipsailing.com. Smaller groups can consider the 6-passenger Lochaber, captained by Dixon Dudderar and based in Harbor Springs, 616.915.0936. For larger groups, a couple of ships may be required for charter sailing or fishing. Go to michigancharterboats.com to plan your trip in the Great Lakes.
