Welcome to the

2014 ULTIMATE UP NORTH KITCHEN TOUR! Saturday, October 18, (9 a.m. to 5 p.m.) is the 7th annual Ultimate Up North Kitchen Tour. This year tourgoers will be treated to 11 kitchens from north of Harbor Springs down to Glen Arbor. Some of the kitchens are in newly built homes, while others are remodels. All of them have ideas galore for you to file away for that kitchen redo you’ve been dreaming of! As always, the kitchens are only one part of the scenery on this tour. The other? The gorgeous Lake Michigan coast, not to mention peeks of Torch, Elk, Birch and Glen Lakes. Yes, the kitchens are spread out down a long swath of shoreline—which is why

we purposely keep the ticket prices reasonable, well knowing that only the most enthusiastic kitchen tour warriors will visit them all! As always, we thank our skilled and talented partners in this tour, the professional designers of the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA). We are also immensely grateful to the volunteers from Child and Services of Northwestern Michigan, who dedicate their time to this event. We are so pleased that all of this combined effort benefits the crucial work provided by Child and Family Services. Please read on for a sneak preview of the kitchens.

Ticket Information: Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 the day of. Tickets may be purchased at MyNorthTickets.com, from any of the designers listed in this guide, at Max’s Service in Traverse City, Capital Granite in Petoskey, Advance Electric in Gaylord or at any of the kitchens the day of the tour. Note: Driving directions will be on your ticket. For more information: 800.836.0717.

imple pleasures: That’s what John Hegener and Jane Warner say the time they spend at their Walloon Lake cottage is filled with. Those words encapsulate activities like lingering

over morning coffee as the sun rises over the water, boating, cool dips and drinks as the sun sets over Walloon. All things they love—and want to share with their friends and family when they visit. When the couple went to remodel their cottage kitchen, they asked kitchen designer Jill Brecheisen to develop a plan and style that accentuated that lifestyle. Jill began by streamlining the kitchen’s clunky workflow—replacing a peninsula that was too far across the room from the sink and range with a prep island located just steps away from the cooking zone. That left space for a second island, perfect for light meals and drinks, situated conveniently next to a bar/ beverage refrigerator station. Brecheisen made this efficient floor plan sing with a relaxed, vintage style based around cream-colored distressed cabinetry and touches of beadboard. The cabinetry/bar is an exquisitely finessed piece that disguises the beverage refrigerator, includes display space for the glassware, and comes off looking like an antique hutch. The elevated design goes on to include a primitive cherry base for the prep island and three different countertop materials. The perimeter countertops are fabricated from juparana persa granite with its soft, earthy tones. The cherry prep island is topped with black brushed lucent granite and a thick slab of walnut finished with rounded ogee edges tops the snack island. Jane especially loves the walnut for its silky warmth on cool mornings when she is enjoying coffee. The range hood, designed by Brecheisen, is the kitchen’s pièce de résistance. Fabricated from wide slats of beadboard and held up by thick, elegant corbels, it is one more simple pleasure in a lifestyle filled with them.

die and Fred Kaufmann wanted to warm up their kitchen—figuratively and

literally. The awkward, drafty space was a 1980s add-on to their home, built in the 1950s of solid barn timbers and Chicago brick. Job 1 was removing a partial wall down the center that separated the kitchen from a game room. Next came removing a fireplace (added, no doubt, to help warm the chilly room) that blocked a view of Little Traverse Bay. New energy-efficient windows opened up the blue-water view and blocked the drafts. Radiant in-floor heat completed the structural changes. With the shell snug, it was time to warm up the style. For that, Edie teamed up with designer Brooke Anderson. Given the Kaufmanns’ collection of Mission furniture—including a number of Stickley pieces—it was natural to work with a Craftsman-esque organic palette of colors and materials. Handsome quarter-sawn oak cabinets by Woodharbor, darkened with a stain that was custom blended to mimic the legendary dark/translucent Stickley finish, set the perfect tone. Brooke also worked with Woodharbor to customize the handsome wooden hood design and to add Craftsmanera muntins to the glass cupboard doors. Creama Bordeaux granite countertops are a soothing, neutral touch. The granite backsplash was mounted so the veins run vertically, creating a dramatic focal point (Edie’s idea). Brooke’s design for a wet bar near the patio door is so period-perfect, it looks as though it might date from Prohibition years. The Kaufmanns couldn’t be happier about the project. “Brooke was lovely to work with,” Edie says. “The kitchen is sunny, beautiful, bright and cheery. It’s the room we live in.”

P

at Reyburn recalls saying this to her husband before they purchased their home on a bluff overlooking both Little Traverse Bay and

Round Lake: “I absolutely refuse to buy that home unless you promise me that within a year I will get a new kitchen!” Did Andy Reyburn keep his promise? “Walls came down!” Pat says with a laugh. Indeed they did—and in the place of the tiny kitchen cut off from the rest of the house, and blocked from an incredible view, grew a warm, functioning stylish kitchen. Along the way, Pat and kitchen designer Caroline Kimble got to be good friends. The demolition that launched the project included removing the wall that separated the kitchen from the living and dining area—and that watery view—and another that created a small, useless hallway between the garage and the kitchen. Finally, with three full bathrooms, Caroline and Pat decided the powder room off the kitchen could go, freeing up more space—enough for double ovens and a pantry. In the new space, clean-lined, transitional-style cherry cabinets with a rich dark stain complement a rustically handsome PetraSlate tile backsplash to create a warm, contemporary look. Flamed granite countertops have the soft matte feel of soapstone with the durability of granite. The new kitchen sink sits where it always did, but thanks to a larger window it now has an expanded view. A new gas cooktop sits under a custom cherry hood and next to a pot filler—Pat loves to cook pasta. A stunning sheet of River Bordeaux granite tops a generous island with room for seating, a microwave drawer and storage. Twin hand-blown glass pendant lights hang over the island. Caroline picked them out in honor of the Reyburns’ collection of glass from all over the world. The floor was a harder-won design solution. The old kitchen floor had run at a diagonal, as it does in the adjoining living dining area. Laying the new flooring diagonally wasn’t going to work in the new space. So Caroline found matching acacia flooring in a butter rum finish, had it installed straight across the room and then used gorgeous deep red-brown stained white oak to set the kitchen off from the adjoining room—creating a handsome wrap to the floor and to this beautiful renovation. indy and Bill Rohde have moved a number of times over the course of Bill’s

career as an insurance executive. Cindy refers to their long list of neighborhoods and houses as opportunities to make friends—and to learn what she does and does not like in a kitchen. She does not like her dishes in cupboards. She does like them in drawers. She doesn’t like appliances cluttering the counter. She does like them in a big, roomy pantry. She doesn’t like people in her cooking space. She does like family and friends visiting with her (at a comfortable distance!) while she cooks. When the couple began building a vacation home in Harbor Springs’ Wequetonsing Association, they intended it to be a home base for their family, “a place where our children will come back with our grandchildren,” Cindy says. So naturally, the kitchen had to be right. As important as all of the above, the Rohdes wanted their new home, both inside and out, to jibe with the Victorian cottages that venerable Wequetonsing Association is known for. Enter kitchen designer Jethany Lee and her years of experience working with Victorian cottage kitchens—both the authentic and newbuilds designed to feel vintage. In the Rohde kitchen, Jethany helped accomplish the look with shiplap wall paneling and a ceiling made with rafter beams left exposed and rough: “Like many of the older homes in Wequetonsing,” she says. Maple cabinets—stacked for a homey look—with recessed panel doors continue the classic cottage feel. Walls, ceiling and cabinets are all white. “White is Weque … and timeless,” Jethany says. A custom stainless hood with a matte finish echoes the soft pewter-toned Vermont Danby marble countertops. Fresh, timeless, beautiful. But how does it cook? Cindy will be the first to tell you: with big roomy drawers for the dishes and pots and pans, a deep walk-in pantry for appliances and dry goods and the biggest island she’s ever had in a kitchen—with room to play chef and entertain family and friends. In short, it cooks just right!. Northern Home&Cottage

had become a bit rundown, and soon after the couple moved in, the stove broke. Knowing that a kitchen remodel was somewhere in their future, the homeowners opted to work around the lack of a stove by using a microwave, waffle iron, electric skillet and other assorted appliances. It was particularly hard for one of the homeowners who especially loves to cook—big familyand-friend type dishes à la food diva Ina Garten’s (otherwise known at the Barefoot Contessa) turkey lasagna. Nearly a decade slipped by and finally the homeowners got around to remodeling. A project that eventually turned into a teardown and new-build. The charming little mocha-colored contemporary cottage, designed by architect Sarah Bourgeois and built by Midlake Builders, is finished now. From her white-painted beadboard ceiling to her hand-scraped maple floors, she’s a sweetie. The kitchen sits at one end of a great room that looks out on Birch Lake. Designer Sandra Bargiel helped the owners strike just the right style note they were seeking—traditional and a bit sophisticated, yet warm and relaxed. The kitchen has simple, white shaker-style cabinetry, a fabulous marble-topped oak island, dark granite counters and a tumbled marble backsplash that also features a set-in, antique cast iron fireback—traditionally used in the back of fireplaces to radiate heat outwards. The fireback sits above the stove—a shiny new Wolf range that the homeowner says was worth waiting for.

T

he colors of the shore—aqua, sand, creams and soft greens—define this light-filled kitchen on Old Mission Peninsula. It wasn’t always that way. When Mike and Amy Petersen purchased their dream Northern Michigan

home after years of vacationing here, the only substantial change they wanted to make was to lighten up the dark-wood palette to better reflect their view of West Grand Traverse Bay. “We’d almost always lived in tree-filled locations, and we really wanted to play up the coastal feeling,” Amy explains. To make their vision into reality, the couple worked with builder Rex Schleem (a childhood friend of Mike’s) and designer Sandra Bargiel. One of Amy’s first choices, a glass tile backsplash, carries all of the colors of the new palette, and sets the stage for creamy white contemporary cabinetry and new Corian Sagebrush countertops. The new bi-level island makes it easy to conceal the mess of cooking from guests visiting the cook. It is also, says Amy, packed with storage. As is the rest of the cabinetry that is outfitted with hidden drawers where toe-kicks are traditionally installed. The striking aqua cooktop backsplash evolved through discussions with Sandra. While the Petersens loved the look of glass, they didn’t want to continue the glass-tile backsplash to the stove area because the mosaic has an irregular surface they worried would make cleaning difficult. Instead, Sandra urged the couple to pick one color out of the tile and order it in a frosted, solid, sheet of heat-tempered glass. Now, mounted on the wall coated with heat resistant paint, the breezy aqua backsplash evokes a pool of water and is a major focal point in the kitchen. New French doors topped with transoms replaced the old sliders and allow daylight to pour in—helping make this the room that Amy describes as the heart of the home. A church pew from Amy’s childhood and an antique table the couple purchased from nearby Brys Estate Vineyard round out this warm and inviting kitchen.

f you ask the homeowner of this cabin nestled into the woods across from Glen Lake to

describe her kitchen’s style, she pauses a moment and then looks down at her fabulous granite countertop with its dramatic tiger coat-like black and gold streaking and says, “I don’t know what style exactly, I just knew I wanted this granite.” The homeowner first saw the granite, called Magma Black, on the website Houzz, then shared the photo with kitchen designer Kristen Myers—who took the remodel of what was a plain-Jane 1980s kitchen from there. “Kristen was just amazing the way she could always figure out what I like,” the homeowner says. Kristen reached into her designer bag of tricks and pulled out several stunning ideas. Among them, having the granite brushed to give it a quilted texture, and pairing it with a black ceramic tile backsplash that looks like ebony. Kristen went on to find the three handsome wrought-iron pendant lights that hang over the counter—the perfect complement to the strength of the countertop and backsplash. Alder cabinetry with a smoky taupe glaze plays a soothing foil to the granite’s starring role—and disguises the Sub-Zero refrigerator, right down to its pullout drawer freezer. The contemporary rustic look is echoed in the eating area where a spectacular hardwood Sheesham (a wood from India) table with a wrought iron base is flanked by lumber-era tools mounted on the walls. The stainless steel farmhouse sink encapsulates a look that is rustic enough to fit the cabin, but with a pleasing contemporary note. Beneath the handsome facade, this is a highfunctioning workspace. The homeowners have four children, ages 7 to 14, so making food prep as efficient as possible was a priority. To that end, the Wolf range is gearing up by breakfast time for a full day’s work, and the restaurantgrade gantry faucet with its heavy-duty spray nozzle is on full alert. For extra baking capacity, the homeowner added a separate microwave/ convection oven. In this small but perfectly appointed kitchen there’s even room for a beverage refrigerator. After a day playing on Glen Lake, that’s the amenity that takes center stage!
