Color It Green As I write this, Northern Michigan’s February world is still a monochrome canvas of snow and bare trees. My mother, who is an artist, says she prefers it to spring’s burst of foliage because the landscape’s bones are visible. Admittedly, I’m not the artist my mother is, but as for me, bring me color, color and more color. And my favorite is the green. (Pantone, I might add, is spot on with its Color of the Year 2017: Greenery.) Green means rejuvenation, rebirth, refresh, vigor, life ... Which is why I love working on our April Outdoor Living issue with its abundance of grass and foliage in so many of the photos. This year’s issue is particularly lush and includes a story on the gardens and grounds of Bellaire Bed & Breakfast—where one of the innkeepers is a landscape designer. You’ll also find a story on the dreamiest backyard imaginable and a home with an entertaining gazebo surrounded by grass, gardens and watery views. And let me talk our Northern Style department. What a joy it was to walk into home decor shops all over Northern Michigan and find them popping with vibrant colors that included, yes, plenty of greens. Have fun with this issue—I promise it will help pull you out of hibernation and into a verdant state of mind!

beautiful, yet underutilized, forested lot. Open space was minimal, and it became a soggy mess every time it rained. The kids wanted a place to play outside, and the parents wanted to cook and relax outdoors. When Drost met with the clients, he says, “The ideas just flowed. I could see a lot of potential in this site.” So did the clients, and they were ready to invest in a plan filled with features to maximize their enjoyment of the outdoors: stone steps hugging the house, native plantings to blend with the woods, a flowing stream and waterfall, a natural stone hot tub, a massive stone hearth and a full kitchen. It’s all mingled within a generous stonepaved entertaining space, both open and covered, and a small grassy area overlooking a wooded ravine. Now the backyard is where everyone wants to gather. “My clients were phenomenal,” says Drost of the shared vision he had with the homeowners. They put a lot of thought into the details, and Drost’s team made their ideas real, from excavation to handchiseling the capstone on the hearth. The homeowner tells this story: A rectangular stone had been chosen to cap off the hearth and to control sparks.
