DAVE SPECKMAN

Lovin’ Up Our Home Builders There’s nothing like a construction or remodel project to make you realize what unsung heroes the folks are who make their living designing, building and renovating homes. I’ve had a large-scale renovation going on at my house this year, and to watch the skill, problem-solving and organization it all takes— not to mention brute energy—has been humbling. These guys and gals make the roofs go up, the foundations safe, the lights go on, the toilets flush. They understand building code. They make our walls and ceilings look fabulous, our flooring and tile shine and on and on ... The really great ones deserve every penny they charge and more. When you’ve been editor of a home publication as long as I have, you hear lots of building and renovation stories—from all over the country. Because of that, I have no doubt that Northern Michigan has more fine, honest and talented designers, contractors and tradespeople per capita than any other state. Which brings me to our 2017 Northern Home & Cottage Tours (Phase I, Traverse City Area, September 16; Phase II, Petoskey Area, October 14). Homeowners who put their homes on our tours generally do it for two reasons: because it helps children in need by benefitting Child & Family Services of Northwest Michigan, and because these homeowners adore their contractors, and by opening up their homes to the tour, they are giving them a lot of great exposure. So, you have to know that the designers and contractors who have their names at the top of the home articles (meaning they are sponsoring the home on the tour) are the crème de la crème of building professionals in this region. And you know what? You can bet that their subcontractors are as good. This August/September issue of Northern Home & Cottage features photos and write-ups of the 13 homes on the tour. Yes, these homes are eye candy for the house-obsessed. But know that behind each of those pretty faces is a skilled and talented crew.

Fifteen years ago Rob and Judy Meyer purchased this circa 1950s ranch on Little Glen Lake with the intention of using it seasonally for several years then tearing it down and rebuilding. The 1,350-square-foot house wasn’t quite large enough for their family long-term, and the place had a quirky layout, with a two-way fireplace located in the middle of the great room. This interrupted the traffic flow and compartmentalized the kitchen, living room, and dining room spaces. Still … even with the home's quirks, the two large picture windows that perfectly frame the view of Little Glen Lake never grew old. After spending several summers at the home, its charm won them over, and the Meyers decided to renovate with an addition instead of demolishing. The end result is a shining example of how the sweet ranch home of yesteryear can function for a modern family. Working with builder Casey Edick, owner of Edick Construction, the Meyers

charm, Liz worked closely with the homeowners to choose warmfeeling, natural materials, including stone, handmade tile and a mix of metals. But first, Liz straightened out some awkward spaces that kept the kitchen from functioning as a contemporary entertaining space. The cramped mudroom was opened up to create a customdesigned wine and coffee bar that wraps around a corner of the kitchen. This stunning piece is outfitted with a walnut countertop (including an under-mounted granite bar-sink), under-lit floating walnut shelves and a handmade tile backsplash. The bar cabinetry and the base cabinetry of a new kitchen island (generous seating for six) are finished in an artisan shade called Charcoal Cordova. Liz went on to create highly functional work zones including a baking center equipped with a mechanized lifting shelf for the heavy Kitchen Aid Mixer in that new island. She also swapped cherry cabinetry for understatedly elegant cream-painted cabinets. The wharf pendant, faucet and hardware are oil-rubbed bronze. A custom brick-tile backsplash extends to the ceiling and replaced plain-Jane square white tiles.

Liz’s touch for just the right balance of sophistication and rustic style continues throughout the home and its four bathrooms— including some truly head-turning natural slate brick in the upper guest bath. Over 15 years ago, John and Mariya Fogarasi purchased a threebedroom condominium in the Ship Watch development at The Homestead in Glen Arbor. John’s career as a diplomat took them all over the world, and he and Mariya hoped to make Glen Arbor their family’s home base in the United States. Decades later, as John neared retirement (and the couple planned to spend more time at the condo), the Fogarasis decided it was time to update their beloved piece of Glen Arbor real estate. Working with Natalie Foisie, of Builder Liaison, and Paul Maurer General Contracting, both headquartered in Traverse City, the Fogarasis oversaw their remodel from six time zones away—which meant that the consultations were usually late at night and what John calls “a labor of love.” The couple had three major goals for the remodel: to modernize the unit; to eliminate the lockout feature (which enabled two bedrooms and a bath to be rented separately), making the unit one seamless space; and to create an interior decor that reflected their international travels while showcasing the magnificent Lake Michigan vista out the window. Goal No. 1, modernizing the unit, largely meant turning a galley kitchen into a gourmet kitchen. To that end, the couple had the wall between the kitchen and the entryway removed to make more space. A clunky in-the-way dropped ceiling over the kitchen peninsula was torn out, and the peninsula became an island—allowing family and guests to gather all the way around it. A backsplash fabricated from Encore tiles (sustainably handmade in Oregon) in a soft blue-green palette now takes center stage—and also reflects the changing shades of the bay framed by the sliding glass doors across the room. The island and perimeter countertops are Cambria Quartz in a pattern from the company’s Montgomery collection that features turquoise swirls—again echoing the watery view. New appliances, bold new seeded-glass pendant lights and custom

definition to an otherwise open floor plan. The walls are also a lovely place to display art—thus the name Shellie and Mike have given it, the Art Walk. Shellie’s hip transitional style glows in this great room where punches of apple green and orange in the upholstery pop against Brazilian cherry floors and soft gray walls. An in-wall gas fireplace trimmed in one continuous piece of marble (no seams!) adds a sleek touch. While Jarvis Custom Homes built the house, Shellie turned to Northwood Kitchens to execute her ideas (remember that purple notebook!) in the kitchen. The soothing palette in this room plays out in white cabinets, gray quartz perimeter countertops and a white quartz island countertop marbled with gray veins that pulls the palette together—a touch for which Shellie credits Northwood Kitchen’s Laura Brudzinski. As Shellie points out, the island is a workhorse because both she and Mike like to cook—his specialty, canning produce from his garden. The island is outfitted with a prep sink that has its own garbage disposal (genius idea). Another equally brilliant feature of this kitchen is the French oven—set into the wall it opens like shutters so there is no bending. Likewise, the dishwasher is set a back-friendly 16 inches off the floor to minimize bending. Tourgoers will be dazzled by touches throughout this perfectly appointed home—crystal light fixtures, the happiest color of aqua on the master bedroom painted walls, cast iron soaking tubs (they keep the water hot!) in each bathroom and much more. Back in 2010, when Dan and Kara Madion purchased this home tucked on the shore of Traverse City’s East Grand Traverse Bay, it was a bit too traditional for their modern sensibilities. Years of add-ons to what began as a cottage in the 1920s had resulted in a rambling unremarkable ranch. Interior elements including the fireplace and dark cherry kitchen cabinets felt heavy and too formal for this family of six. The couple knew, however, that those were drawbacks that could be fixed—and were

At its essence, the story of this home set on Old Mission Peninsula is one of renewal. As the homeowner Atul Gupta explains it: “I was looking for a change in my life after my wife passed away from lung cancer in early 2016.” Atul, a vice president for IBM, still has a home downstate in Huntington Woods, Michigan, but he’d always wanted a lake house—and more than ever after his wife’s passing, he craved that sort of a serene spot to get away. After a friend introduced him to Old Mission Peninsula, Atul knew where he wanted his second home to be. He chose Penny Herberger of Coldwell Banker (whose card read “Fresh Starts”) as his Realtor, and by the end of November of 2016 he’d closed on a home with a fabulous view of East Bay. He loved the view and the fact that the home, built in 1995, is brick (unlike other homes in the neighborhood, woodpeckers aren’t interested in his) and he was delighted that the home had a walkout with a second kitchen for entertaining extended family and friends. But there was still plenty that he didn’t like about the place. His list of what had to go started at the dark mahogany front door and continued on to the dark wood trim, the dark kitchen cabinets, the dated granite, carpeting and tile. Atul didn’t much like the main floor layout either—specifically the way a wall between the living room and the kitchen blocked the view of the bay when you walked in the front door. “I wanted the home to feel open and beachymodern, blended with some rustic accents,” Atul says. He spent a couple of winter months visualizing how he would like his home to look and then hired Jason Stark of Practical Renovations Wood Floors to replace all the carpet and tile with a stained white oak. He was looking for a beach house feel—a shade that was something between smoke and whitewash. “Jason kept staining samples and showing them to me until I was happy,” Atul recalls. Jason introduced Atul to Marc Fournier, owner of Fournier Construction and Restoration, LLC, and Atul hired him for the renovation work. It is a decision he has been very happy with: “Marc has been very flexible and great to work with,” he says. After that, dust started flying. The wall that blocked the view came down and Atul is having the traditional exterior doors replaced with eight-foot tall double glass doors that open to the view of the bay through the great room and kitchen windows. Marc has his own Traverse City showroom for cabinetry, tile, granite (50 slabs!) and quartz (90 different colors!), which made the Untitled-1 1

kitchen choices one-stop shopping for Atul. The end result, white perimeter cabinets, gray cabinetry on the island base, and new white quartz countertops make the room feel light and airy. There are more treats in this view-filled home that will delight tourgoers as well. The exquisite paintings are by Atul’s sister Mala from New Delhi and Debra Sanborn of Peninsula Studios in Traverse City. And then there’s the windsock on the deck that

helps Atul spot his house when flying over the Peninsula in his Cessna! Elizabeth Edwards is managing editor of Traverse lissa@traversemagazine.com Photos by Dave Speckman
