It was the same challenge every summer. Dad would take the boat to “our spot”.. our favorite secluded beach on the sand dunes. After he anchored the boat we donned our cool new goggles and got ready for the race. Mom would yell “GO!”, and we would all plunge into the big lake and race Dad to the top of the dunes. He would always win, of course. Until this year– finally. The celebration that followed featured ice cream, smores, and lots of humble pie for Dad.

editor’s note

Petoskey Area Home Tour! I have been to the Charlevoix, Boyne, Petoskey, Harbor Springs area numerous times this summer— more than usual because there has been so much planning involved for our first ever Northern Home & Cottage Petoskey Area Home Tour, Saturday, October 10. Depending on traffic, roadwork and whether the Charlevoix drawbridge is up or down, the treks can take over 2.5 hours from my Leelanau County home. Ask me to make a bunch of 2.5-hour round-trips on beautiful summer days anywhere else in the country and I’d shoulder-roll out of the car faster than you can say lickety-split. But not if it’s this segment of US31 and the roads that weave around it. This route rolls past orchards and farm stands, wide blue swaths of Lake Michigan on the horizon and its lapping waves in the foreground. It treats to up close and personal gazes at Elk Lake, Torch Lake, Round Lake, Lake Charlevoix and Crooked Lake. It’s a tapestry of deep green forests and small towns dappled with Victorian storefronts and creative boutiques and eateries. I am usually on a pretty tight schedule but I will tell you I brake for cherries—and blueberries, peaches and fresh-cut lettuce—at the farm markets and stands along the way. And after I tried an authentic Breton buckwheat crepe at That French Place in Charlevoix, count on my taillights flashing red whenever I come close. But that’s just the beginning of a list of the small, indie businesses that make these towns so beguiling. Four paragraphs into this editor’s note and I haven’t even told you that the 10 homes on our Northern Home & Cottage Petoskey Area Home Tour are as stunning as the landscape around them. Better yet, with their cottage vernacular, they fit into this region’s history and style in a way that feels storybook. Prepare to be enchanted with glossy white beadboard, cool marble counters, brass pendant lights, a shiny whiteand-gold La Cornue stove, watery views out every window … The only thing better than driving this route in the summer just might be driving it on an autumn weekend, like say, October 10, 2015, when those glorious hardwood forests are aflame. This tour is a Don’t Miss. Even if you live in the area, you would do well to make it a weekend. Grab your significant other or your friends and book a room. As a child, Sue Damman vacationed in a rustic resort on the shores of Walloon Lake called Valhalla. It was an American plan resort, and Sue recalls the dinner bell ringing, signaling that meals were ready in the big lodge. Her parents had honeymooned there, and then vacationed there with their children until the resort closed in 1971. After Sue married, she and her husband, Warren, continued the Northern Michigan tradition by taking their family to vacation on the big, beautiful lakes of the region from Torch to Glen. By this time Valhalla had become Wildwood on Walloon condominiums. Eventually the Dammans purchased one— and were thrilled to find out that the owners of Wildwood had left one of the old Valhalla cabins standing to use as a beach changing room. “It’s like being lost in time when I go in,” she says. Her Northern Michigan memories had come full circle—but then it got better. When a private lot went up for sale adjacent to the condominium association, the Dammans snapped it up: it was dream home time. Sue had no trouble deciding what style of home she wanted—she has spent years collecting ideas from home magazines including our very own Traverse Magazine/ Northern Home & Cottage. (When we met her son Tripp he recognized our publications as the magazines he’d had to lug around in big boxes several times for his mother!). Sue knew she wanted the Walloon lake-house look—lots of white

beadboard, windows with big lake views, a loft-area for her grandkids. Most of all, she and Warren wanted to build a home that created Valhalla-type memories. The Dammans hired Cottage Company of Harbor Springs (Rob and Vee Mossburg and Rob’s sister, Jill Nuding) to build the home. “We really liked the Mossburgs. It’s a family-run operation. We loved what they’d built in Harbor Springs, and we knew that with their attention to detail we wouldn’t have to worry—everything would be perfect,” Sue says. And it is. The Dammans’ new vacation home glows with glossy white beadboard, deep molding and generous banks of mullioned windows framing watery views. And while there is no dinner bell to call in the family, there is a to-diefor brass and white enamel La Cornue stove, trusty enough to keep up with the family and friends who gather at the lake. Warren, too, got something he’d remembered from his childhood—a secret door. This one leads from the guest room through a closet into the Dammans’ bedroom. The grandkids love it—although their 4-year-old grandson Christopher, did comment to one person he was escorting through the door: “Nanni needs to clean up her shoes. The Neo-Victorian manses of the gorgeous Bay Harbor development on Lake Michigan south of Petoskey are timeless on the exteriors. But their interiors often need updating, and so it was in this beautiful home. Ten years after they’d purchased their vacation house in Bay Harbor, the owners asked interior designer Nadine Hogan of Scott Shuptrine Interiors to take their home from French provincial to an elegant, contemporary cottage style. Playing off a palette of soft coastal colors, Nadine painted the living room a taupe hue that hints of driftwood. That subtle shade is set off with pale sea foam, and aqua and cream in the upholstery and drapery—embroidered linen fabric from Cowtan & Tout. Darkening the oak floor to a rich mahagony grounded the setting in a contemporary look. The new relaxed yet sophisticated living room furniture includes spindle and wingback chairs and a sofa. Crème colored custom area rugs by Masland lend a crisp and fresh look. In the master bedroom, red walls were repainted a soft sage, while the former ruffles-and-swag draperies were

replaced with the tailored look of an upholstered cornice (that hides motorized Hunter Douglas silhouettes) paired with crème silk side panels. Where a canopy bed once monopolized the space, now a graceful carved bed from Drexel Heritage with an antiqued creamy finish feels airy and luxurious. In the family room, Nadine exchanged the yellow and red (roosters, you know!) for shades of aqua and lime, then went on to replace the sectional and add a truly marvelous aqua leather ottoman that doubles as a coffee table. She updated all of the window treatments and chair pads with Kravet fabrics, and a custom area rug from Fabrica. Nadine went on to accessorize everything from the candlesticks to décor bowls. Tourgoers will love this peek into a whole new Bay Harbor style.

With its blue-gray shake siding, white trim, hipped roof, farmhouse-style dormers and front portico that welcomes with a hint of Greek Revival feel, the Smith cottage on Walloon Lake feels like it has graced this setting since Ernest Hemingway summered down the road as a child. The truth is, it was built in 2013 by contractor Jim Meathe working with architect Greg Presley—a talented duo who have created a reputation in the area for their historically accurate Walloon cottages. That was just the look Mike and Nancy Smith were looking for when they contacted Jim Meathe about building them a second home. The Smiths had vacationed in the area for years and knew they wanted a comfortable, old-feeling cottage that was big enough for their family of five and for entertaining, but not so big that it didn’t feel intimate. To focus the couple’s vision, Jim took them on a pontoon tour of the cottages of Walloon so that they could point out features of the lake’s cottages that they liked—roof styles, eyebrow windows, center steps from the porch. Jim passed those ideas on to Greg who refined them even further to create the timeless architectural exterior of their home. The interior is marked by dark-stained wide-planked pine floors, plenty of white beadboard, and a fabulous fieldstone fireplace (that Mike and Nancy personally chose each rock for). Lovely details, including an old-fashioned window seat and arches over some of the windows and between the open kitchen and the rest of the living area, enhance the home’s careful craftsmanship. The furnishings are a mix of new pieces (chosen with help from Nancy’s friend, Carol Spencer of Classic Designs, based in Birmingham, Michigan) and antiques from a family cottage on Harbor Point in Harbor Springs. The kitchen has timeless white marble counters, white subway tiles and a generous island where guests help prepare meals or just linger with a glass of wine. The intimate, well-thought-out spaces, coupled with the wide-open views of Walloon Lake make this home memorable—and wonderful to spend time in. It’s all so relaxing, in fact, that family and guests can seldom be persuaded to go out for dinner. “We’ll suggest it, and they’ll say, ‘Can we just eat here?’” Nancy says with a laugh. But this home’s grand finale—the place that everyone who visits here ends up settling near—is a two-sided fireplace set in the middle of the open kitchen/living area. Constructed of tumbled Chilton stone, the hearth actually houses a bar on one side, replete with a double-drawer refrigerator. As if to remind you that this home is full of understated drama, an alligator mount stretches across the hearth’s other flank. Then again, if you have a penchant for sleek mid-century modern style and Euro cabinetry, you’ll want to stop here as well. Guided by designer Sandra Bargiel of B.C.D. Interiors and Bay Cabinetry & Design Studio, Matt and Courtney Font have successfully blended the styles. The effect is unexpected, cool and makes you wish you lived here. The core of the farmhouse, set on a bucolic road outside bustling Petoskey, dates from 1896. A previous owner added a large kitchen in the 1980s. A fortuitous (especially for that decade of ungainly style!) wall-sized bank of double-hung windows that match the ones in the original home are all that remain of that Brady Bunch–era kitchen. Now, cabinetry by the Italian company Arosa Mobilia defines the space. In a fitting balance of styles, the Arosa Mobilia cabinets are mixed with glossy white cabinetry provided by the Amish company Ayr. This perfectly functioning kitchen with its high-end stainless Thermador appliances also sports marble and custom– fabricated stainless steel countertops and a black walnut dining slab that T-s from the prep island. The story is familiar enough in Petoskey’s leafy old neighborhoods: A time-honored Victorian sits shrouded in bushes for decades, waiting quietly for someone to notice her. The story of this home, built in 1913, ends—begins actually—when Cheyenne and Danielle Smith walked in and knew that they were the perfect fit for the project that would breathe life and glamour back into this once-beautiful home. The Smiths are partners with Danielle’s family, the Howards, in a custom building business. Cheyenne and his brother-in-law, Josh Howard, had the skill, vision and resources to perform this Architectural Digest-caliber renovation. Rewind to the day the Smiths first saw the place: shag carpet, layers of wallpaper (including a particularly funky red velvet pattern!), cramped, cut-off kitchen, dining room window completely blocked off by a plate glass mirror, aluminum-clad siding ... Fortunately, the Smiths and the Howards looked right through all of that to the original leaded windows, the pocket doors, the deep crown molding, and the carvedmahogany front door covered in Murphy-green paint. And then they rolled up their sleeves.

This stunning renovation preserves all that was classic about the house—including the leaded windows and a complete re-creation of every inch of that molding—while infusing the home with a shot of glam it hasn’t seen since the Roaring Twenties. Tourgoers will move across a new maple floor with a handrubbed European finish to the parlor, with its walls painted a pale shade of sea-foam green, original fireplace and refurbished mantel. The newly opened-up dining room and kitchen—designed by Jill Brecheisen of Kitchens by Design—dazzles just beyond with its marble counters, glossy white cabinetry, subway tiles and maple island countertop that matches the floor. Note the small, stylish open shelves made from reclaimed wood, courtesy of a new Petoskey-based business, True Barn Lumber. More elegance awaits up the spiral staircase—but we don’t want to give away the whole story!

Cotswold-Tudor cottages of England, some of which date to the beginning of the Middle Ages. Cotswold-Tudor is a style that was emulated frequently in leafy old Midwestern neighborhoods between the World Wars—making the design completely at home at the top of East Lake Street in downtown Petoskey, where handsome historic architecture defines the streetscapes. The interior is marked by a great room that, with high ceilings and long linear dimensions, reminds ever so subtly of a medieval hall. A gracious fireplace in the living area and the kitchen, designed by Liz Firebaugh of Signature Kitchens, warm this clean, simple space that exudes countrified elegance. A walnut floor, beautiful area rugs and handsome traditional and antique furniture pieces all harmonize to make the living/dining area sing with gracious style. An expansive, honed Vutton Gold granite countertop island highlights the kitchen area, and the Whites purposefully kept the surface clear of a prep sink or any other fixtures/appliances so that the island feels like a piece of fine furniture. Even so, the island has plenty of room for two cooks to prep (Betsy and Nick both enjoy cooking), while others can pull up a stool and enjoy a glass of wine. Painted cabinetry (Benjamin Moore Clay Beige), alder stained island base, glass-paned cabinets and generous pendant lights that are reminiscent of hanging candelabras add to the room’s Old World ambiance. Eleven years ago, Jeff and Julie Towner were one of the first couples to purchase a cottage in a new Harbor Springs development called Bay Street Cottages. What a fabulous investment it was. Bay Street Cottages are the brainchild of Rob and Vee Mossburg, owners of Cottage Company, a build-and-design firm whose creations have left a smart and charming influence on the HarborPetoskey area. so efficiently designed they have plenty of room for their three kids and two grandchildren. With proximity to the beach and the downtown, the Towners stow their car (in the development’s carriage-house style garages) when they arrive from their Grand Rapids home and travel nearly everywhere by bike or on foot. After a decade of happy year-round vacationing in the home, it was time for a décor update. The busy working homeowners left it all to Vee Mossburg. “I wanted it all done from the knick-knacks right down to the soap holders—I didn’t want to have to finish anything up,” Julie says. Vee began the re-design by making the seating in the home more flexible—exchanging a sectional for a couch and three chairs, twin beds in their daughter’s room for a trundle, adding poufs that can be stored in a bedroom but brought out for entertaining, and swapping a banquette for a dining room table that seats five.

As far as style—well let Vee Mossburg do your décor and you will never want for style again. The Towners’ formerly green-and-yellow color scheme is now a modern neutral with navy and dramatic splashes of orange—as seen in side tables, lamps, leather dining chairs and two fabulous island stools. The French provincial–style fireplace received a contemporary makeover with white WalkerZanger Labyrinth Thassos Select Polished tiles, and the pink-and-green bedroom the Towners’ daughter dreamed of is fit for a princess. “The first time we saw the house after it was finished we got in at around 10 p.m. on a Friday night and didn’t go to bed until about 3 a.m. because we couldn’t get over how perfect it is,” Julie says.

When Larry and Nancy Beck were ready to downsize, it meant moving to their historic Oakwood farm, set behind the white rail fence on M119 on the north side of Harbor Springs. At 244 years old, the oak tree that stands in front was a sapling when the Declaration of Independence was signed, and the picturesque barns date from the 19-teens—they’re still in use. The farmhouse had last been used as the offices for Birchwood Construction, a company in which Larry is a partner. The Becks’ goal was to return the home to its roots as a gracious country home. On the exterior, the buff brownand-pale-caramel color scheme—courtesy of Nancy’s eye for design—preserve the Americana-feel of the farmstead. 

The goal on the interior was to make the home open and airy. As Larry says, “I don’t like walls.” To that end, Tom Adams, Ken Provost and their team at Birchwood Construction gutted the entire home, removing as many walls as possible to execute the floor plan design by Mark Lipchik, of M.J. Lipchik Design. The centerpiece of the main floor is a handsome, open oak stairway with architectural glass in lieu of spindles so that nothing blocks the soaring view to the second floor. The fluid downstairs floor plan preserved the rustic red brick fireplace but sports a new master bedroom, a lovely deck off the dining room and a kitchen with creamy quartz countertop, painted maple cabinetry and built-in hutch designed by Jethany Lee of Preston Feather Building Centers. A steam shower in the workout room is just one of the many ideas that will inspire tourgoers. And everyone will especially enjoy the art collection that graces the walls on all three floors of this home—it is a collection that the Becks have gathered over decades of extensive travel. In general, Bryan and Connie Rellinger loved the charm of the old cottage they purchased on a Crooked Lake peninsula, north of Petoskey. Specifically, however, the presence of a live-well in the kitchen (a huge cement basin with running water for keeping fish alive was right in the kitchen entry way, seriously), rickety staircase and green shag carpet, not so much. An extreme renovation was the only solution. The downside? The rebuild would have to fit into the smallish nonconforming footprint. The upside? That footprint was built when folks could place a building close enough to the water to feel like they could dive in from the house. Ahhh … Stephanie Baldwin of Edgewater Design helped the Rellingers come up with a timeless cottage design that breathes efficiency into every nook and cranny. It also expresses the synergy of Bryan, Connie and Stephanie, who emailed each other links to products they liked throughout the building process. That teamwork resulted in an interior that sports a young take on classic cottage. Highlights include a brass

sink and light fixtures, coffered ceilings with wide beadboard planks, leathered granite kitchen counters and a way-cool floor made of American chestnut planks from an old barn. Thanks to an abundant use of windows that deliver a grand view of Crooked Lake, the home feels airy and much larger than it is. Bryan and Connie also love how well the layout functions for their family—especially when they are entertaining. The kids’ bedrooms are off a large landing at the top of the stairs—roomy enough to double as an entertainment room. When the adults are enjoying cocktail hour or a dinner party downstairs, they can pull a sliding door across the kitchen/great room area to seal it off from the kids’ ruckus upstairs (or vice versa!).
