From Torch Lake to Petoskey— Unforgettable Homes! It’s October in Northern Michigan—our most colorful month, what with the riot of reds and golds in the woods and the deep shades of cobalt and turquoise that our lakes turn that time of the year. I can tell you for a fact that I know of seven homes in the Petoskey area that take full, splendiferous advantage of that view. I know because I have scouted them all for our 2016 Northern Home & Cottage Home Tour on October 15. (This is the second of our two 2016 tours—in September we walked hundreds of happy tourgoers through homes in the Traverse City area.) Each of these seven homes is on the water or has a full view of that beautiful H2O: Torch Lake, Lake Michigan, Round Lake, Walloon Lake and Burt Lake. Talk about a wealth of scenery. But I can also tell you that the scenery inside each home is equally breathtaking. I truly love each and every home on this tour. You’ll see shingle, lodge, cottage and Wright-esque architectural styles. You’ll see several massive single-sided fireplaces and two fireplaces with double-faced hearths, a European-inspired kitchen, a wallinstalled steam/convection oven (the latest in cooking trends), an outdoor deck that is cantilevered over a dune swale, a pond with fountains, and even a floor that still bears the marks of the lumbermen who walked over it in their heavy boots back in the day. When you’re a little kid, you don’t know how the simple act of building sand castles on the beach can have such a dramatic impact on your life. As I sit here gazing at what remains of this summer sunset over the lake, I can smell what must be the first night’s bonfire rising, and nostalgia nearly overwhelms me. Our family came “up north” in the summer like so many other families. For some of us kids, the water, the waves and the sand left impressions deeply ingrained in our consciousness. Over time, those feelings grew seductive enough to draw us back. I have never seen myself as the overly nostalgic type. But as I close my eyes while sitting here on the porch, it all comes racing back to me as an unforeseen gift. All the sights, sounds, and smells of those family vacations long ago swim through the warmth of a magnificent sunset.

From the cedar shake and stone façade to natural interior elements of wood and stone, the Arnolds’ new home blends perfectly into its wooded lot. In the great room, large banks of windows welcome in the fresh, deep-water vista, while the two-sided stone fireplace (one side faces the living area, the other faces the dining room and kitchen) heats up the rustic style. The rustic theme continues in distressed Douglas fir trusses, handsome custom wrought iron touches (truss braces, chandelier and stair railing), a hickory floor and sophisticated barn wood accents that echo a Ralph Lauren feel. A carefully curated use of stone on the interior is a true signature statement in this home. Beyond the fireplace, the frontdoor-wall is faced in stone from top to bottom, and touches of stonework continue through the dining room until they culminate in the pièce de résistance—a stone range-hood. Think lodge, fine country house, European inn—the hood, the kitchen’s focal point, executed by Jill Brecheisen of Kitchens by Design, evokes a bouillabaisse of home and hearth sentiments. Brecheisen complemented that powerful statement with creamy farmhouse cabinetry, black granite perimeter countertops and an island topped in a thick, polished slab of cordovan-colored granite she calls cowboy leather. A separate beverage area and walk-in pantry (paneled in the logoside of wooden wine boxes) round out this dream kitchen. With its organic materials, clean lines and cantilever, this home evokes a Frank Lloyd Wright-ian style.
