Working Beauty Summer’s sweet spot finds me on the road from our office in Traverse City to as far north as Harbor Springs several times a week. My mission? Scouting homes for our 2017 Petoskey Area Northern Home & Cottage Tour on October 14. It’s a lot of driving; also, backups from construction and the drawbridge in Charlevoix. Know what? I love it all. At 60mph our Northern Michigan landscape up this gold coast is a blur of green forests, fields and orchards and streaks of Lake Michigan, Torch Lake and Lake Charlevoix. A traffic standstill might bring me face to face with a field of sunflowers or a herd of dairy cows. And when that Charlevoix drawbridge goes up there are boats to watch— sometimes the ferry The Emerald Isle bound for Beaver Island 40 miles across Lake Michigan ... my imagination just takes it from there. And there’s always a new (to me, anyhow) back road to try: a couple weeks back I discovered bucolic Elk Lake Road that connects M72 in Williamsburg to Elk Rapids on US31. So many apple orchards the air smelled of pie, and in the midst of them this freshly painted white farmhouse with a For Sale sign in front—just waiting, it seemed, for a young family to start life there. Treats along the way help break up the drive: a quart of black cherries from a roadside stand, a crepe to-go at That French Place in Charlevoix, a swanky lunch waterside at The Pier in Harbor Springs, a peek to see what’s in the deli case at Cellar 152 in Elk Rapids ... But the biggest treat by far is being invited inside the homes that will eventually be on our tour. Clearly, these homeowners all love this Northwest Michigan coast as much as I do because each home has a different, fresh way of capturing and reflecting our Northern Michigan lifestyle. Here’s what’s in it for you: Purchase a ticket at MyNorthTickets.com and on October 14 you too will be invited into these homes. The landscape will no longer be summer’s sweet spot but it will be autumn bliss in its fiery splendor. Put this tour on your calendar, friends. Trust me. You are going to love it.

With an eye for clean, simple and elegant, Kelly melded the interior details using a neutral palette, natural materials and textured fabrics. In the great room, creamy shiplap paneling, character-grade white oak floor, jute lighting and rugs, grass-cloth wall coverings and a Calcutta marble-faced fireplace harmonize for a sensibility that Kelly sums up as “warm and inviting, yet sophisticated and edgy.” The furniture, from her private label collection, Cottage by Kelly, is brilliant. Covered in high-performance indoor-outdoor fabrics that look and feel like linens, the furniture is made to stand up to the sand and wet bathing suits that are part of a Harbor Springs summer lifestyle. Furniture legs are exposed to keep the feel “light and airy,” Kelly explains. Standout pieces include walnut dining chairs, a living room chair and bedroom rocker that all channel mid-century modern lines. The kitchen exemplifies the versatile-luxury concept found throughout the rest of the home, with an upholstered banquet that partly frames a large round table (that fits more people than a similar-sized square table). Appliances are all hidden in creamy cabinetry to maximize the sense of airiness. Quartz countertops look like marble but hold up to anything. A fabulous rope and polished nickel pendant light over the table pulls the living area’s style theme into the kitchen. There is more but we don’t want to give it all away. Tourgoers are going to be amazed at the perfectly thought-out detail that the Mossburgs have incorporated into this 1,700-square-foot gem. In 1919, a young insurance salesman and Realtor by the name of Earl Young worked with a Petoskey architect to design a home for him and his wife, Irene, at 304 Park Avenue in Charlevoix. A devotee of Frank Lloyd Wright, Young had attended the University of Michigan’s School of Architecture for one year—leaving because of the school’s focus on classical and Victorian architecture. Despite hiring an architect, Young clearly had a significant hand in the design of his home. The finished product had a grand stone exterior and a roof marked by interesting angles and Craftsmanstyle dormers. The home was Young’s first stab at what would become a 50-year career building and designing signature stone homes in downtown Charlevoix. Young eventually designed 26 residences (counting his own first home) and four commercial properties defined by their enchanting stonework and rooflines. Think Frank Lloyd Wright (organic materials, horizontal lines, exposed rafter tails) goes fairytale with wavy roofs, arches, nooks, whimsical chimneys and many more details. Collectively, the buildings are known by several nicknames, including the mushroom houses, gnome homes and Hobbit houses. However they are described, Earl Young’s homes are fabulous and sure to stir the imagination. Northern Home & Cottage

Dr. Seitz went on to update the home in an elegant contemporary-rustic style befitting the original design, which includes an open kitchen with massive live-edged wood-slab countertops and modern appliances. The handsome floors are torched white pine, and the treads on the spiral staircase are white oak from the property, finished with a charcoal wax. There is plenty of new stonework—but it all matches the original stonework. Indeed, the craftsmanship and details are endless in this three-floor, three–master-suite home.
