Winter Imaginings
DAVE SPECKMAN
Our sunrooms, WeatherMaster windows, decks, and railings are designed for a worry free experience. They are designed to extend your enjoyment of the outdoors without common annoyances like wind, rain, insects, and harmful UV Rays, Sunspace Sunrooms and WeatherMaster add beauty and comfort to any space while increasing the value of your home or cottage.
I love to imagine what is going on right now in and around the three houses that we have featured this month. I scouted the homes in warm weather—the leaves were on the trees and porch furniture was on the patios. They are beautiful homes made for summer. But I think for winter, too. Here’s the way I imagine them come winter: Ice will be forming on the edges of the Au Sable River about now, and I picture snowflakes melting into the bottle-green water where trout are settled into the structure under the riverbanks. Inside the Au Sable River cabin we have featured on page 13, there’s a roaring fire in the massive fieldstone fireplace—a magical place to warm up after a morning of catchand-release trout fishing. Over at the Gibsons’ home on Washington Street (page 22), just blocks from downtown Traverse City, the holiday season means that Pat is cooking up a storm for family and friends in his new kitchen. His sous chef, wife Katie, is nearby mixing up her famous margaritas. As you’ll see in the story, Pat graciously prepared one of his favorite meals for us—a Yucatán smoked pork feast—then sent us the recipes. (Find them, including Katie’s Margaritas, at mynorth.com/gibsonrecipes.) Yes, you should try these at home! Finally, if there’s a squall forming over Burt Lake, and the weather outside is frightful, Ann Doman and her family will be tucked inside their cozy nouveau farmhouse. Her granddaughter, of course, will be upstairs bouncing around on grandma’s very own basketball court. The vignettes are so warm and homey I think they feel like holiday cards. So here is wishing you, dear Northern Home & Cottage reader, the coziest of winters, filled with home.

THREE PROS TALK WHAT’S HOT IN COUNTERTOPS AND FLOORING
By Elizabeth Edwards
Who: Angela Goodall, Owner Kitchen Choreography, Traverse City Traverse Magazine’s Red Hot Best Kitchen Designer and 2017 Best of Service award winner from Houzz, Angela has some 800 stunning kitchen designs in her portfolio.
What’s hot in countertops: “The hot trends in hard surfaces continue to be marble lookalikes such as quartzite and manufactured quartz. This super-clean yet classic look is always popular and never goes out of style.” That said, Angela encourages: Don’t be shy about exploring other looks. “For hard surfaces, the sky is the limit!”
Who: Brad Jurik, Owner Stratus Marble and Granite, Traverse City Brad started Stratus Marble and Granite in 2000, but has been working with surfaces of one type or another for 30 years. “The intrinsic beauty of natural stone has always inspired me, with its proven durability through the ages,” Brad says. “I love creating functional artwork from these natural elements and helping clients with something beautiful, tangible, substantial and permanent that makes them happy every day.”
What’s hot in countertops: “Homeowners are still loving natural stone and are now discovering matte, leathered and other textured finishes for unique looks.”

T
he Au Sable is no ordinary river. Among fishermen, the 138-mile blue ribbon trout stream is referred to in sacred prose, such as: “If God were to make a perfect
trout stream it would be like this ...” Legends of industry including Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, the Dodges and the Firestones all fished the Au Sable. The international organization Trout Unlimited was founded on this river. Change happens slowly on the Au Sable—who would want to alter perfection? Family cabins that began with a small one-room “fishing camp” serviced by a makeshift outdoor kitchen might add on slowly over the generations. One summer someone decided to enclose the front porch to make more room for fishing creels and ... a few grandchildren later it was time for a real kitchen. ➤

If you love this river, you simply wouldn’t want to build something that didn’t fit in. Such was the case with the homeowners of this new cabin. “I’ve been coming up here to fish since I was 11—My grandfather taught me to fly fish,” the homeowner says. “It’s always been on my bucket list to have a place here.” After finding their dream parcel on the banks of the Au Sable, the couple took their ideas for a design that spoke a fishing-camp vernacular to Northville/Elk Rapids–based architect Joseph Mosey and contractor Eric Render of Render Construction. “From the beginning the message was clear for Joe and me,” Eric says. “The homeowners wanted a brand new house that looks like it has been here a 100 years or more. We really valued that challenge.” ➤

ERIC RENDER AND HIS TE AM AT RENDER CONSTRUC TION CUSTOM MIXED THE COLOR OF THE CHINK TO MAKE IT APPE AR OLD.
Looking to Adirondack-style fishing camps for added inspiration, Joseph’s design features several different types of exterior materials so that the home appears as though it was added on to over the course of generations. The core is 19th-century-style chinked timbers, while the rest is a mix of live-edge siding (à la 1930s) and board and batten for a more contemporary look. Authentic riverrock skirting, both on the home’s foundation and on the base of timber pillars, roots this home firmly in rough-hewn Northwoods style. ➤

The interior is enchanting in its blend of rustic outdoorsman-style accented with sophisticated furnishings. The home moves from the log-and-chink foyer—with its wall display of antique trout creels, to a great room that revolves around a massive riverrock fireplace that the homeowner points out was purposely built with as little mortar as possible. “In the old days mortar was the expensive part and the stone was cheap,” he explains. The walls and ceiling in the room are clad in dark-stained pine nickel-board. And that ceiling—supported by stained pined timbers is a conversation piece. Unlike modern construction, in which the floor between stories

The timber beams in the great room ceiling actually hold up the floor above,” Joseph explains. So how about those mechanicals? Installing them, Joseph says, took a bit of

K
atie and Pat Gibson love modern/contemporary style. But they also love their 19th-century home on Washington Street for its proximity to schools, downtown and the
beach. Although the home had been updated over the years, at its core it was still as stiff and closed up as the parsonage that it was built to be in 1887 (for the church next door that is now a home). The parlor was still a cramped room at the front that Katie had begun referring to as the Christmas tree room because that was all it was big enough for. The kitchen was nothing but an afterthought galley stuck on to the back of the house. And that, in and of itself, was the biggest problem, because Pat is a passionate cook. The family lived in the home for several years before deciding how they wanted to change it. In the end, the guiding principle behind the renovation, says Pat, was to keep the home feeling like Washington Street on the outside but not on the inside. On the inside, the family wanted the home to feel relaxed, open and tailored to entertaining.

The Gibsons brought in two of Northern Michigan's strongest design talents for the top-to-bottom renovation: kitchen designer Liz Firebaugh of Signature Kitchens in Petoskey and their close friend, architect Michael Fitzhugh. Knowing the Gibsons well, Michael says, really helped in understanding their style and sensibilities. Michael’s design changes began with opening up the Christmas tree room to the adjacent dining/living space, thus creating one fluid great room. Next, he designed a handsome new walnut and stainless steel stair system to replace an original spiral staircase that was the only way to the second floor. ➤

The kitchen was a bigger issue. “I wanted to provide a unique experience for the resident chef to enjoy a connection to the family room and the backyard while cooking and entertaining,” Michael says. To gain much-needed space he extended the back of the house by 10 feet (footage that also enlarged the upstairs master bedroom). He then reconfigured the kitchen area so that it looks into the dining and living areas, as well as out to the backyard through a large sliding patio door. Perhaps most thoughtfully, he added a deep overhang over the patio door that gives Pat the ability to grill outdoors in bad weather. ➤

at a cooking island topped with a black walnut counter. Sage glass backsplash tiles, durable and handsome quartz perimeter countertops and high-end laminate cabinetry all combine to create a kitchen that is as organically modern as it is efficient. Proof was daughter Sarah’s high school graduation open house last June when Pat made authentic Yucatán food for 200 guests, who flowed easily from the great room, through the kitchen and out to the backyard. No doubt, the old parsonage rocked like it never had before with laughter, fun and exotic, mouthwatering aromas. For Pat Gibson’s recipes please go to mynorth.com/gibsonrecipes. nn Doman has spent many Christmas holidays skiing Up North—at several resorts, including Boyne Highlands, where eventually she purchased a condo. But once her
two sets (yes two sets!) of twins were grown and starting families of their own, she started searching for a standalone home big enough for her family to gather during both winter and summer vacations. Ann had dreamed of a log home, but when she found a contemporary farmhouse, built in 2011, for sale on a spectacular piece of Burt Lake frontage, it more than quelled her desire for a structure that felt true north. One unexpected but sweet perk was an athletic room above the garage that was outfitted with a small indoor basketball court. With one grandchild already and another on the way, it looked like the ultimate rainy day space at grandma’s house.

Even as she was purchasing the home, Ann knew she would want to add more bedrooms and bathrooms to accommodate her entire family. Fortunately, she was able to hire Gary Nance (Gary Nance Design), who was the home’s original architectural designer. Gary was more than willing to take on the project. He’d designed the home for long-time clients who have become friends and were pleased with the outcome. As he points out, the home’s contemporary farmhouse style was cutting edge at the time, as were fabulous features including a pantry, open on both ends, that wraps around the back of the kitchen—making for plenty of storage as well as a place to stash dirty dishes during dinner parties. ➤

ANN DESIG NED THE OUTDOOR KITCHEN (SET U NDER THE NEW PERGOL A). THE FAMILY USED IT ALL SU MMER LONG , SHE SAYS .
Working with Gary and Ken Provost of Birchwood Construction, Ann added on two bedrooms, two baths, a Florida room, and an outdoor kitchen set in a handsome pergola. Since Ann oversees her own small design firm, Doman Designs, she set about updating many of the surface materials, including replacing the flooring with rustic reclaimed wood and new granite countertops in the kitchen. She had a fireplace added in the master bedroom and enlarged a fireplace in the kitchen. And that basketball court received new tile work around its perimeter. Bring on those grandchildren!.
