Beauty rests on necessities. The line of beauty is the line of perfect economy. Ralph Waldo Emerson 1803 -1882 Paul Maurer General Contracting has been building beautiful custom homes in the Grand Traverse Region for nearly 40 years, and during that time we have learned at lot. The most meaningful lesson learned is this– it’s all about what the homeowner wants, not what we want. We believe in listening carefully to our customers and then delivering on their vision. It’s the cornerstone for success.

Letting Nature In In my work I go into many, many gorgeous homes that leave me in awe of the designers, builders and homeowners who created them. The structure we call home is an envelope for so many things—our personal sense of style, a place where we gather with family and friends, a cocoon to retire to when we need to recharge. But our house can also be our home base for connecting with nature—something that science is showing us is indispensable to our mental and physical health. When I walked into the home featured in this issue’s story, “Building Tranquility,” I was immediately struck by this connection. The homeowners are wise, loving people who have learned through a well-lived life the importance of everything a house should provide. Within their Harbor Springs home they have created a wing for gathering with friends and family, and at the other end of the home, a master bedroom that is a true sanctuary. But to be in the area in between—the main living area—feels almost as though you are taking a peaceful walk along the shoreline. The sensation comes from a wall of floor-to-ceiling folding windows on the lakeside and generous windows on the forest side. It comes from walls that are painted a creamy color that feels like light itself. And it comes from a honed manufactured stone that is the shade of beach pebbles. The choices were a very deliberate way on the part of these homeowners to connect their home to its magnificent natural setting. This home and the other two featured in this issue of lakefront living remind me again of the importance of design in where and how we live— and the way we celebrate this fact in every issue of Northern Home & Cottage.

WHAT'S HOT IN OUTDOOR FURNITURE THIS SEASON.

TELESCOPE CASUAL FURNITURE

By Elizabeth Edwards

experience selling all types of furniture—and sitting on his own porch.

What’s hot in outdoor furniture? In Northern Michigan most people are seeking an outdoor furniture look that blends with our beautiful natural landscape—the woods and water. Nothing flamboyant. They want pieces that are ergonomic in terms of comfort and style. One company I would point customers to is Telescope Casuals. The furniture is made in America, good quality and a good price point. They have a wide range of styles, fabrics and finishes. Wicker is always popular because it looks both organic and cottagey, as is marine-grade polymer, which resembles wood. In aluminum-framed furniture, Telescope has a wide range of colors so you aren’t stuck with black or white. A shade called aged bronze, for instance, blends well with a wooded landscape.

What is hot in outdoor furniture? I am a big fan of Telescope Casual—a Made-in-America company that is one hundred years old. I particularly like their marine-grade polymer. It’s a great product for outdoor use in Northern Michigan. The color goes all the way through, so it doesn’t scratch or discolor, and it comes in all styles from contemporary to cottagey. I also love Woodard. This Michigan company is 150 years old and still very relevant. They are still doing the scrolling patterns forged from wrought iron, such as Briarwood, that most of us are familiar with, but they have many other styles now, and they have branched out into aluminum and woven outdoor furniture. Their products really hold up. I’ve had a couple of their spring chairs for over 15 years, and they are still in great shape.

his family’s devotion to their Lake Michigan property runs as deep and true-blue as the waters that lap at its shoreline. The land, located in Harbor Springs, has been in the husband’s family since his great

grandmother purchased it in 1924. So when he and his wife, who shares his sensibilities, had the opportunity to build a summer home on a corner of the land, they knew they would do it with utmost sensitivity. “We wanted a home that was quiet and tranquil,” his wife says. The couple also envisioned a structure that would blend into its natural dune and forest setting as well with the architectural vernacular of historic Harbor cottages.

THE HOMEOWNERS USE THE OUTDOOR ROOM E X TENSIVELY.

Enter architect Mark Buday of the Habor Springs–based firm Buday + Kruzel Architects, who approached the project with the thoughtfulness worthy of his clients. After lengthy discussion with his clients, Mark found his inspiration for the project in a picturesque fieldstone pump house that had been on the property for decades. “We wanted the new home to tell a story and not look like it was just dropped here,” he explains. Looking at the pump house made Mark feel that that story should begin with fieldstone: Imagine an old stone outbuilding that sat next to a cottage; imagine that one summer many years ago the structures were connected by a porch and then as the family grew that porch was enclosed ... That narrative defines the home’s basic structure. The house, which parallels the shoreline, is designed around two wings connected by a long low section (the imaginary closed-in porch). The larger, two-story wing is meant to resemble the site’s original cottage, while the smaller wing, faced in fieldstone, symbolizes the old outbuilding. The design fits beautifully into the local vernacular architecture, and clad in a palette of natural shingles and burnt orange and red trim it feels very organic to the site.

ands down, Roberta Seeburger was the most stylish woman in Glen Arbor in the early 1970s. Back then, she and her husband, Jim, had recently moved from New York City to property he’d purchased on Fisher Lake (a small lake

that feeds into the Glen Lakes) years before. Up until their permanent move to Glen Arbor, they’d summered on the land in a one-room cabin that Roberta referred to as the “Hideaway Hovel.” Roberta admired the work of architect Tom Phillips who was designing some of the first condominiums at nearby The Homestead resort. The Seeburgers hired him with several stipulations: that there would be an art studio for Roberta and an indoor hot tub room. In New York City Roberta had owned The Hot Tub Company, makers of huge, cedar barrel-tubs that were the precursors of the now ubiquitous spa and outdoor hot tubs. Phillips executed her wishes with aplomb, designing a tri-level home flooded with light and views of Fisher Lake. True to his mission, the home featured a glassed-in solarium for the hot tub (“My orchids loved the moisture,” Roberta recalls). The natural light-filled art studio was a runway loft with a view out to the lake and down into the living room on one side, and down into the foyer on the other. Flash-forward some 40 years. The home is owned now by Michael and Kenna McDonald and their three young daughters—stylish women all. Kenna’s parents purchased the home from the Seeburgers in the 1970s, so she grew up in the house

with its cedar hot tub-solarium (considered quirky-cool by the 1980s) and crafting with her mom and sister in the art studio. There was also a galley kitchen—one that was largely cut off from the living area by a giant fireplace. Having spent her childhood in the home, Kenna had no problem knowing how she wanted to transform the home for her family’s modern lifestyle. Opening up that galley kitchen was job one. Working with kitchen and bath designer Marty Rhein of Bay Area Contracting, Kenna shaped a plan that included removing the fireplace to create an L-shaped great room. The center of the kitchen is a fabulous 39-by-95-inch island topped with a 3-inch quartz countertop (looks like marble but holds up better). The island base and all of the perimeter cabinetry is custom-made by the Elk Rapids-based Wooden Hammer, and painted a Farrow & Ball shade called Cyberspace. Elements including white subway tile with dark grout, a wall of white shiplap, floating shelves and white oak flooring create a warm, contemporary ambiance. A prep sink, SubZero refrigerator and commercial style Wolf Range round out this cook’s kitchen.

THE MCDONALDS RETROFIT THIS G ENEROUS ROOM THAT HOUSED THE FORMER HOMEOWNERS’ HOME OFFICES INTO A FAMILY DEN .

The McDonalds’ renovation went on to include transforming a cubby once used for fireplace-firewood into a living area bar, and replacing the original popcorn ceiling with white-washed pine deck. On the exterior, the couple updated the taupe cedar siding by painting it a deep-blue trimmed in crisp white exterior—a look that is ready to take the home into the new mid-century. The art studio on the loft runway, designed by Tom Phillips so many years ago, is still just that—now filled with paper, crayons, scraps of cloth and other trappings of this creative family. And that hot tub solarium? It has become a fabulous master bath, the old cedar tub replaced with a sophisticated soaking tub that whispers relaxation with a subtle, contemporary accent. blend of New York and Michigan,” is the way the owners of a Lake Michigan waterfront home describe both their family and their new vacation home

in Harbor Springs. Based in New York most of the year, the family has long ties to Northern Michigan. The Harbor Springs home is where they head to connect with their Michigan roots—both metaphorically and literally, as getting to the home means crossing a wooden footbridge that spans a quintessentially Northwoods babbling trout stream.

In 2013 when the family purchased the circa-1950s split-level it was in serious need of updating. Built for a furniture executive from Grand Rapids, the house was heavy on built-ins and other retro touches, but the main living space had only one small window to frame that Lake Michigan view. “That was a real shame,” says designer Kelly Konoske, of Cottage Company Interiors, who was brought into the project by Cottage Company Builders along with Rob Sears (Sears Architects) and Liz Firebaugh of Signature Kitchens. In the end, the homeowners decided to save only the existing foundation, so the project was essentially a new build, and the design team conceived of a laidback yet luxurious summer retreat. It would be a home “where nothing was too precious for every day, and friends and family were welcomed and encouraged to wear flip-flops,” Kelly explains. “They wanted a place where they could escape, relax and enjoy making memories with friends and family—a fresh take on a traditional style cottage,” she continues. The outcome is a style that Kelly refers to as coastal cottage chic.

Exterior details of the home include cedar shake shingles, large porches, abundant windows and columns. The interior rooms are light-filled and welcoming and were designed to be as low-maintenance as possible. Sand-colored floors hide stray grains from the beach. The living room’s white sofas are covered in an indoor/outdoor fabric designed to accommodate wet towels and bathing suits and other summer abuse. Rugs are also indoor/outdoor or made from tough natural materials. “No one wants to be at their cottage and cleaning,” Kelly says. The homeowners’ collections of art and objects add personality throughout. Kelly cherry-picked items from the family’s storage unit, including a red rocker and a “Beach” sign, both featured in the Fourth of July–themed lower-level family room. “Anything they loved we wanted to include,” she says.

THE STU NNING B LU E CAL ACAT TA ISL AND COU NTERTOP WAS IMPORTED FROM ITALY.

On the “love” list in the kitchen were simple subway tiles that run all the way to the ceiling, barn-style pendant lights, dark gray Blue Calacatta marble on the island, and low-maintenance white quartz on the perimeter countertops. “You just wipe it and go,” says Kelly, who used the same quartz in the upstairs bathrooms. The bedrooms all boast attached bathrooms, water views, abundant storage and access to the balcony that overlooks the beach. Beach views are also available in the charming three-season porch off the dining room, which features exterior–style cedar shake shingle walls to make it appear as a later add-on to the cottage.

A home that now appears airy and effortless was a true labor of love—with plenty of emphasis on the labor, as both demolition debris and construction materials had to be carried over the footbridge by the construction crew. “Every piece of lumber, material, fixtures and furniture was carried by hand over that bridge,” Kelly says. “And the majority of that was in the winter.” With the renovation finished, however, the footbridge has taken on a whole new meaning. Crossing the simple, rustic structure has become symbolic for the family— signaling their arrival and marking their return to a place they call their touchstone.
