HARBOR SPRINGS
Back when this was a Northern frontier town predominantly made up of French and Native Americans, townsfolk raced shaggy Indian ponies down Main Street for sport. Later, the rough little outpost became a place for genteel resorters attracted to the picture-perfect scenery around Little Traverse Bay. Nowadays, all that wonderful history and the architecture that comes with it is the backdrop for boutiques, galleries, eateries and the Harbor Springs Lyric Theatre, housed in a circa-1920s building on Main Street. harborspringschamber.com.

GLORIOUS VISTAS.
Classic Harbor Springs & Cross Village Whether by car or by bicycle, touring the 16-mile-long Tunnel of Trees (officially known as M119) is a slow-mo pleasure. The narrow blacktop road begins in Harbor Springs, meanders through tiny Good Hart and ends in Cross Village. Along the way, it spools out through thick forests and delivers occasional and stunning views from spectacular bluffs overlooking Lake Michigan. At the Harbor Springs end, stop in at Pond Hill Farm—working farm, farm store, cafe, brewery, winery and petting zoo. And don't miss Primitive Images (a rustic home elements store). In and around Good Hart check out the Good Hart General Store, the Good Hart & Soul Tea Room, A Studio, Trillium Woods Antiques and the Northern Crêpe Cart. In Cross Village, don’t miss Old World Cafe, Three Pines Studio or the legendary Legs Inn—an authentic Polish restaurant in a cool stone-and-timber building with one of the best views around. MACKINAC ISLAND
In the 20 minutes it takes to ride the ferry to Mackinac Island you’ll be transported back to a time when travel was by horse, foot or one of those new-fangled bicycles. Motorized vehicles are banned on this gorgeous island where Victorian cottages and huge lilac bushes seem to grow together out of the landscape and the azure waters of the Straits of Mackinac lap the shoreline. Kids can help shoot a cannon at Fort Mackinac, where history lessons come bundled with fun. Read on for more about this must-do Great Lakes vacation spot. mackinacisland.org.
Snap a photo by Arch Rock, Mackinac’s one-of-a-kind limestone formation that rises 150 feet on the island’s southeast shore.
FESTIVALS
Be at the Mackinac Island finish line for two the Great Lakes’ most revered yacht races, the Port Huron to Mackinac and the Chicago to Mackinac. The races are in July and run a week apart.
Mackinac Island Lilac Festival: June 8–17. This island extravaganza includes a Taste of Mackinac, 10K run, carriage tours and more. But mostly it is about glorying in the blossoms on Mackinac’s historically famous bounty of lilac trees.

BOYNE COUNTRY
L EF T TOP & BOTTOM, MARY L AVICTOR | R IGHT, KELLY REWA
With lapis-hued Lake Charlevoix in its front yard and the Boyne River running through it, Boyne City has the makings of a classic resort town. Add a downtown blossoming with parks, brewpubs, shopping and dining—a scene lovingly nurtured by the community-based Boyne City Main Street Program—and it all adds up to an unforgettable destination vacay. Six miles northeast of Boyne City, tiny and perfect Walloon Lake Village, set on the shores of gorgeous Walloon Lake, exudes a similar vibe. Find a marina, a classic hotel, a fabulous restaurant, relaxed boutiques and fun pop-up shops in this childhood summer home of Ernest Hemingway. BEACHES
The downtown Peninsula Beach on Lake Charlevoix is the place to lounge away a sunny afternoon. Tannery Beach is a great spot for a swim, to launch a canoe or let your dog play in the water—doggie bags and scoops on site. At the fabulous 560-acre Young State Park on Lake Charlevoix, use the beach for a day or snag a campsite and stay the night.
