Two titans of the planet’s freshwater reserves—Lakes Michigan and Huron—meet in a swirl of brilliant blue here at the Straits of Mackinac and in the shadow of the idyllic Mackinac Island and the majestic Mackinac Bridge. A region made for aweinspiring vacations? You bet. In Petoskey and the Straits of Mackinac you’ll explore lighthouses and islands, paddle deserted shorelines, hike and bike panorama-filled paths, cruise on ferries, and find the perfect sandy dune to while away a beach day. Ready to dry off and shake the sand from your hair? The necklace of charming coastal towns that runs from Petoskey, through Harbor Springs, Mackinaw City and across the bridge to St. Ignace, in the Upper Peninsula, are filled with boutiques, galleries and eateries. An added bonus: two reconstructed historic forts that bring an important and exciting slice of French/British and American history to life.

MACKINAC ISLAND Set between Michigan’s Upper and Lower Peninsulas, just east of the Mighty Mac Bridge, Mackinac Island envelopes visitors in lost-in-time charm. History, natural beauty and, above all, relaxation, come together on this island where cars are banned, and bikes (bring yours over on the ferry or rent one), horses and carriages rule the road. mackinacisland.org. MUST DO Mackinac Island Lilac Festival, June 9-18: This island extravaganza includes a Taste of Mackinac, 10K run, carriage tours and more. But mostly it is about glorying in the blossoms on Mackinac’s historically famous bounty of lilac trees. Tickets for fun, festivals and more! MyNorthTickets.com.
GETTING THERE The ferry ride over is part of your Mackinac Island adventure! Two ferry lines Shepler’s and Star Line service the island from Mackinaw City and St. Ignace. The ride across the sparkling Straits of Mackinac takes about a half-hour. Enjoy views of the Mackinac Bridge and the island’s historic buildings as they come into focus. You’ll be there before you know it. sheplersferry.com, mackinacferry.com.
HISTORY CLASS WAS NEVER THIS FUN! Plug your ears at Fort Mackinac's regularly scheduled cannon and rifle firings, join in old-fashioned children’s games, and try a British soldier’s red coat on for size! Costumed reenactors lead demonstrations to show what life was like for the soldiers and families who called Fort Mackinac home since the fort was built during the Revolutionary War, through the War of 1812 and beyond. Stay for lunch at the fort’s Tea Room (don’t miss their wondrous chocolate shakes!), where you can eat on the deck overlooking the island downtown and gaze out across the Straits. Find fun history lessons down on Market Street, where you can visit the working Benjamin Blacksmith Shop, watch open-hearth cooking and colonial-era craft demonstrations at the Biddle House, and (best of all!) learn about how a voyageur’s gunshot wound transformed medical digestive history at the American Fur Company Store. You also won’t want to miss the newly reconstructed Fort Holmes, which began its life as the British Fort George, built to defend the island against the Americans in the war of 1812. Find it on Fort Holmes Road. In Marquette Park, explore the re-creation of a Native American birch-bark chapel. Both sites are free. 231.436.4100, mackinacparks.com.

FUDGE The warm, sweet scent of cooking fudge has been filling Mackinac Island streets since the late 1800s—seems that the climate is perfect. Most of today’s fudge vendors still use the time-honored, labor-intensive technique of “paddling” the warm, liquid fudge on marble slabs until it cools. A slice or two is the ultimate souvenir.
