the perfect day

BRUNCH. HIKE. BEACH. At the tip of the mitt, homemade breakfasts, pristine trails and daydreamy stretches of sand wait just for you. PHOTOS BY RACHEL HAGGERTY

4

MYNORTH.COM

brunch

PALETTE BISTRO | 321 BAY STREET, PETOSKEY

While technically a lunch spot (with brunch on weekends) Palette’s regular midday menu brings a breakfast A-game with the Bacon Benedict (made with locally sourced smokehouse delights from Plath’s Meats, going strong since 1913) and a fabulous Fried Egg BLT. A classic Bloody Mary with all the accoutrements and a shady spot on the patio with peeks of Little Traverse Bay takes it to a sublime next level. Open daily for lunch at 11:30 a.m. with brunch and Bloody Mary bar at 10 a.m. on weekends.

hike + beach

PETOSKEY STATE PARK | 2475 M-119, PETOSKEY

Take a customizable hike along the park’s lovely trail network, through 304 gorgeous acres. This expansive, sugar-soft beach on Little Traverse Bay is a slice of heaven for rock hounding, playing beach volleyball or just listening to the waves come in. Don’t miss the incredible views atop Old Baldy: just follow the half-mile hiking trail to the top of this stable, nearly 800-foot-tall sand dune perched just behind the beach.

brunch

OLD WORLD CAFE | 6352 NORTH LAKE SHORE DRIVE, CROSS VILLAGE

Elegant alcoves invite you to take your time with a delightful array of breakfast classics enhanced by European ingredients. Do a DIY morning power-up with the European breakfast board: warm baguette, St. Dalfour French jam, European cheeses and plenty of protein—smoked salmon, ham, Canadian bacon, and a hard-boiled organic egg. Also don’t miss the challah French toast with Kerrygold butter (hand-whipped with cinnamon and brown sugar), and berry compote, even if it’s a communal order shared with your tablemates. Breakfast is served all day, Tuesday through Sunday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

hike + beach

WILDERNESS STATE PARK | 903 WILDERNESS PARK DRIVE, CARP LAKE

Bring your field guide along with your beach chair, as this diverse terrain is an eco-identifier’s heaven. Enter Wilderness’s mix of thriving forest, mean-

dering creeks, and wildflower meadows via the shore-hugging Wilderness Park Drive. Pick up a map and head to Big Stone Trail, an easy hike under a woodland canopy. At trail’s end is a quiet pond where great blue herons wade, pied-billed grebes dive and monarchs dance in the milkweed. Broaden your nature knowledge on the pond’s interpretive trail, then head back to the trailhead. If you’re looking for more legwork, veer off to the 1 ¼-mile Red Pine Trail, which links up with several additional trails. Hop back in the car to continue your cruise toward the western edge of the park. Wilderness Park Drive turns into Waugoshance Point Road. Where it ends, park, then hit the beach. If you’ve got time (hope you do!), consider strolling the shore to its western end at Waugoshance Point; from there you can see the Waugoshance Lighthouse, one of the first lighthouses on the Great Lakes. Before dusk, drive east to Big Stone Bay—a choice spot for a much-anticipated sunset dip in Lake Michigan.

brunch

SAM’S GRACES | 339 STATE ST., HARBOR SPRINGS

Divert to this cozy Harbor Springs micro eatery for a brunch crafted with care. Yep, even the English muffin is scratch-made for the breakfast sandwich, which is amply appointed with Mitten-raised meats. The hash brims with bright and beautiful veggies. Hoping to hike out before the early birds? Sam’s opens at dawn ... as in 5 a.m. Tuesday-Saturday and Sunday at 8 a.m. Or if you’re taking it more leisurely, be sure to linger over a Bloody Mary with a marvelous house-made mix.

hike + beach

THORNE SWIFT NATURE PRESERVE | LOWER SHORE DRIVE, HARBOR SPRINGS

This sweet Lake Michigan spot is a bit of a secret: a pretty 30-acre preserve tucked away in the forests off M-119 four miles north of Harbor Springs. Strike out on the Cedar Trail to the shore. The route is easy—a half mile of boardwalk and mulched path. Maple, ash, tamarack, dogwood and juneberry trees mix with trickling streams and make for one of the best birding spots in the region. Stop, look and listen as long as you’d like. When you’re ready, continue down the path to the beach. Large boulders sit at the shore’s edge and speckled alder and chokecherries ring the beach. Do some stone skipping and/or afternoon napping on the preserve’s 300 feet of public frontage. On weekdays in September, chances are you’ll have it all to yourself.

FIVE COOL THINGS ABOUT THE

Don’t hold your breath over this bridge—it’s five miles long!

Here’s what puts the mighty in the Mighty Mac!

This lean, mean, crossing machine is heavy—it weighs over a million tons!

Discover the bridge's sheer grandeur. MyNorth.com/MightyMac

Just so ya know ... there’s nothing but the bridge between your car and that water 552 feet below.

All those bolts that keep the bridge together? There are 1,016,600, to be precise.

Memorize this, it might come up on Jeopardy one day: There are 42,000 miles of wire in the main cables.

7 REASONS TO VISIT THE UPPER PENINSULA

Where would we be without that Upper Peninsula, shielding us down here, keeping the spirit of the Up, Up North alive and well. Blessed with natural beauty from its Lake Superior coast to Lakes Michigan and Huron, Michigan’s Upper Peninsula is one of the last true frontiers in the country. Round out your bucket list with these U.P. landmarks.

Sandstone cliffs that tower over Lake Superior (don’t get too close to the edge!), castaway beaches, and trails through cathedral forests. Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is simply unforgettable.

Anchored by Whitefish Point in the north and the Seney National Wildlife Refuge in the south, the 150-mile Superior Birding Trail guides visitors through the rugged and rare ecosystems of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. We love everything about the Upper Peninsula: the moose, the sprawling forests, the quaint and historic towns— and delicious craft brews. Spread out across the length of the U.P., you’ll find over a dozen of Michigan’s best breweries. But don’t just take our word for it. Go! We’ve mapped out your guide to Upper Peninsula beer spots at MyNorth.com/upbreweries. Home to old growth hardwoods, streams, lakes and rolling vistas, the Porcupine Mountains, in the Upper Peninsula’s northwest corner, are nothing short of inspirational. Book a campsite or rustic cabin and stay a while. Cross the Mackinac Bridge, turn east and drive into a different world defined by the 36 Les Cheneaux Islands and their associated channels, harbors and 12 miles of mainland shoreline on Lake Huron. Ever seen a giant, ocean-going freighter drop (seemingly) magically 21 feet from one Great Lake to another? You need to see the Soo Locks in Sault Ste. Marie. The Keweenaw is a peninsula’s, peninsula’s, peninsula jutting a-way up into Lake Superior from a-way up top of the U.P. Make it up there for Lake Superior views, peaceful forests, a lesson in copper mining and some of the friendliest folks on the planet. You won’t regret it. 2019 MYNORTH

Taste something new.

SIP LIKE A LOCAL Drain a cold craft beer in a hip microbrewery or sip wines surrounded by bucolic loveliness. When it’s time to chillax with a drink, Petoskey and the Tip of the Mitt have you served! Folks who winter over in this region are just hardier—and maybe happier than people in warmer climes who shy away from celebrating snowy, frigid weather. You might say the same for the grapes grown in the Tip of the Mitt American Viticultural Area, created in 2016. This new AVA—Michigan’s first in 30 years—covers the Petoskey area (and more). It was founded to promote wine-grape growing north of the 45th Parallel, specifically cold-hardy varieties such as Marquette, La Crescent, Frontenac, Petite Pearl and Itasca. Experience these varietals, as well as genuine Midwest hospitality, at the 12 wineries in the Petoskey Wine Region that runs up the Tip of the Mitt’s left coast. Take a seat on the deck at Petoskey Farms Vineyard & Winery where the vineyards roll out before you and you’ll get a taste of Michigan’s northernmost wine country. This area’s rich history also gives character to their wine—you’ll feel it while sipping a glass at 1918 Cellars, set in the enchanted and historic Castle Farms. These are serious winemakers, who despite the youth of their AVA are starting to chalk up medals and accolades. This summer, Walloon Lake Winery claimed a silver for its Randall Red in the Michigan Wine Competition and two bronzes for its Wildwood White in the Indy International Wine Competition and the Michigan Wine Competition. And across the region, seek out wines made with Marquette grapes—the rosés are especially crisp and refreshing, with notes of tart cherry. The winemakers of the Petoskey Wine Region are also an adventurous, pioneering crew and their wines reflect that spirit. Maple Moon Sugarbush and Winery, for example, is one of the first commercial maple syrup winery in the country (and may we say, maple wine is excellent!). You can sip blackberry wine in the homey log cabin tasting room at Crooked Vine Vineyard and Winery in Alanson, and golden raspberry wine at Spare Key Winery in Charlevoix. Order up a Honeycrisp apple wine at The Cellars of Royal Farms, or a glass of Backroads rosé at Seasons of the North, a wine that is crafted from grapes growing wild in this winery’s Indian River neighborhood. And the folks at Resort Pike Cidery & Winery demonstrate their passion for all things sparkling with 20 taps of ciders and bubbly wine. Where there is wine there is craft beer—at Pond Hill Farm, Rudbeckia Winery and Burnt Marshmallow Brewing and Mackinaw Trail Winery and Brewery. All three establishments are full-scale destination venues where there is always fun going on (bocce at Rudbeckia or squash rocket at Pond Hill anyone?). The burgeoning in-town microbrewery and taproom scene is elevating the region’s vibe as well. Beard’s Brewery in downtown Petoskey and Stiggs Brewery and Boyne City Tap Room in downtown Boyne City are providing these towns with a buzzy new nightlife. Petoskey Brewing, housed in a 19th-century building that actually began its life as a brewery, gives industrial design a historic twist. In Mackinaw City, a juicy White IPA tastes even better in Paddle Hard North’s handmade mugs, so join the club. Finally, let every trip across the Mackinac Bridge be toasted at Bière de Mac, where you’ll raise your glass in sight of our state’s most iconic landmark.

must-do' s on

MACKINAC ISLAND In the 20 minutes that it takes to ride the ferry to Mackinac Island (from either Mackinaw City or St. Ignace) you’ll be transported back to a time when travel was by horse, foot or one of those new-fangled bicycles. Motorized vehicles are banned on this gorgeous island where Victorian cottages and treesized lilac bushes are the backdrop for navy-blue waves on the Straits of Mackinac. Here’s the short list of things to do when you get there. PHOTO BY ANJANETTE MERRIWEATHER

TOUR THE GOVERNOR’S SUMMER HOME

Michigan’s gov and other state dignitaries get to use this Victorian mansion in the summer. The public is invited to tour it, free, on Wednesdays throughout the summer.

SNAP A SELFIE AT ARCH ROCK (CAREFULLY!)

This rare formation stretches nearly 150 feet above the water. According to Native American tradition, it is where the Great Creator blew the breath of life into the newly formed earth.

PLUG YOUR EARS!

Watch (and maybe get a chance to help) fire the cannon at Fort Mackinac. Caboom!

BIKE AROUND THE WHOLE ISLAND

Pedaling Mackinac’s eight-mile perimeter is a wonderful way to explore the landmarks and drink up fabulous views of the sparkling Straits. If you’re feeling adventurous, bike inland through the lush forest.

TAKE A CARRIAGE RIDE

A horse-drawn buggy tour is a quintessential Mackinac experience and a fitting way to view the island’s beautiful Victorian homes. Mackinac Island Carriage Tours, the oldest and largest continuously operating horse-and-buggy livery in the world, offers narrated tours of landmarks and historical points of interest.

EAT A LOT OF FUDGE

Confectioners here have been whipping up this sweet treat since the late 1800s when they found that the island breezes made their fudge set perfectly. Most of today’s vendors still use the time-honored, labor-intensive technique of “paddling” the warm, liquid fudge on marble slabs until it cools. Follow your nose to any or all of the downtown fudge shops.
