The majestic Mackinac Bridge stitches together Michigan’s pristine Upper Peninsula with the woods, waters and sweet towns of its tip of the mitten to make up this unforgettable region. The elements that create world-class vacations are all here—boating, biking, beaching, dining, shopping and relaxing. Add to that a dedication to making the exciting history of this region (Native Americans, voyageurs, the War of 1812, the Victorian Resort era and more!) that adds a colorful and dramatic backdrop to a visit here. Come away with us to this beautiful land of Michigan’s north and you’ll experience a getaway like no other. —The editors of MyNorth.com and Traverse, Northern Michigan’s Magazine.

Bike rentals available on site. 855.688.7022, boyne.com. Avalanche Mountain Preserve is a heavily wooded, 30-acre park in Boyne City interwoven with mountain bike trails (and a disc golf course!). TUNNEL OF TREES This 16-mile-long designated Scenic Heritage Route, officially known as M119, begins in Harbor Springs, passes through tiny Good Hart and ends in Cross Village. The narrow blacktop lacks a centerline (caution: don’t drive this route if you are in a hurry!) and traces an ancient Native American trail along a spectacular bluff overlooking Lake Michigan. Bordered by a thick hardwood forest that parts occasionally to offer tantalizing glimpses of Lake Michigan, the Tunnel of Trees is beautiful four seasons a year—so bring your camera. In the spring, morels and trillium carpet the forest floor. Summer brings a thick green canopy that turns red and gold in autumn. In winter, views of the icy lake open up. Popular stops along the route include Pond Hill Farm, Thorne Swift Nature Preserve (and its beautiful Lake Michigan beach), the Leg’s Inn (an authentic Polish restaurant housed in a 1920s stone building) and the old-timey Good Hart General Store.

KIDS Pond Hill Farm is many things: a working farm, a farm store, a cafe, a brewery, a winery—but to children it’s a petting zoo with friendly barnyard animals, a trout pond where you can feed the fish, the “squash rocket”—a giant slingshot for flinging gourds into the fields— and where they offer hay rides every weekend from May through October. 5581 S. Lakeshore Dr., 231.526.3276, pondhill.com. Find 16 bowling lanes, arcade, laser tag and indoor mini golf and glow bowling at Northern Lights Recreation. Families can break for a great lunch or dinner at the Sassy Loon Pub and Grill (pizza, Mexican, pasta and burgers). 8865 M119, Harbor Springs, 231.347.3100, northernlightsrec.com.

INLAND WATERWAY

The meandering, 40-mile Inland Waterway is one of Michigan's longest interconnected chains of lakes and rivers, stretching from Pickerel and Crooked Lakes all the way to where the Cheboygan River empties into Lake Huron. Meander the slow-mo waters by pontoon, kayak or even stand-up paddleboard. Big beautiful Burt and Mullett Lakes are great for sailing and power boating. MACKINAW CITY Tucked at the base of the mighty Mackinac Bridge, this is where you’ll cross from Michigan’s Lower to its Upper Peninsula and catch a ferry to Mackinac Island. But don’t be in a hurry to go. Mackinaw City is flush with shops (including the 50-shop Mackinaw Crossing), eateries, historic sites, parks, waterfront and outdoor activities. mackinawcity.com. DON’T MISS Antiques on the Bay Auto Show, June 17–18; Coast Guard Day with the Ice Breaker Mackinac. August 13.

GO TO THE BEACH Swim in the warm, inland waters of French Farm Lake or find big water at Mackinaw’s Municipal Bathing Beaches, right in town. Four miles west of Mackinaw City, Cecil Bay Park, on Lake Michigan, offers a secluded sandy beach where you can walk the shore to the peaceful mouth of the Carp River. Find it 5 miles southwest of town at the intersection of Cecil Bay Rd. and Wilderness Park Dr.. The Headlands has 2 miles of Lake Michigan Shoreline with stunning views of the shoreline, the Mackinac Bridge and the Upper Peninsula. 15675 Headlands Road, emmetcounty.org.

BIKE Get pedaling! The 32-mile North Western State Trail runs from Mackinaw City to Petoskey (along a former railway line)—a sweet route that passes through Conway, Oden, Ponshewaing, Brutus, and Carp Lake. The 24.5 miles between Mackinaw City and Alanson are dirt, sand and gravel (improvements are underway but for now, mountain bikes only!) while the 7.5 miles from Alanson to Petoskey are asphalt. The North Central State Trail also begins in Mackinaw City, running 61 miles south to Gaylord, past the Sturgeon River and Burt Lake and through the towns of Wolverine and Indian River. The trail has a crushed limestone surface. Find trailheads for both trails in downtown Mackinaw City. trailscouncil.org.

HEADLANDS INTERNATIONAL DARK SKY PARK One of only a handful of these premier stargazing parks in the world, the park is building a brand new bricks-and-mortar center this year (so pardon its stardust!). Programming will continue while the construction goes on, however, and as always visitors are encouraged to bring sleeping bags, chairs and blankets and enjoy the heavens all night long. 15687 Headlands Rd., Mackinaw City, 231.348.1704, emmetcounty.org/darkskypark.

LIGHTHOUSES Shepler’s Ferry, one of three ferry lines that services Mackinac Island, also offers cruise tours of the numerous lighthouses in the Straits area. Choose from Lake Huron, Lake Michigan and Les Cheneaux Islands cruises that (combined) take you past more than a dozen lighthouses including the seldom seen Spectacle Reef Lighthouse and the St. Helena Island Light. 556 E. Central, Mackinaw City, 231.436.5023, sheplersferry.com.

MARY LAVICTOR

Tour the 145-year-old McGulpin Point Lighthouse, one of the oldest surviving lighthouses in the Straits. While you are there, take the Discovery Trail, where costumed re-enactors interpret Straits history. Admission is free to both the lighthouse and the trail. 500 Headlands Dr., Mackinaw City, 231.436.5860, emmetcounty.org. Tour the lighthouse keepers quarters, climb to the top of the tower, and check out the Straits of Mackinac Shipwreck Museum at the Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse. Adults $7.50; Children $4.50. HISTORY IS FUN!

DAVE WEIDNER; MARY LAVICTOR

Cannon smoke, musket firing and gazing out at the Straits over palisade walls are hallmarks of every visit to Colonial Michilimackinac. From 1715 to the early 1780s, this fortified encampment served as the western Great Lakes fur trading epicenter. All of that comes alive at what is now an open-air, live-action museum and active archaeological site (more than a million artifacts have been unearthed here since excavation began in 1959). Children can participate in soldier drills, crafts, Victorian dances, games, and can even help tend the vegetable garden and cook dinner over an open hearth. The annual Fort Michilimackinac Pageant, featuring the reenactment of a Native American siege of the fort, every Memorial Day Weekend (fmpcfestival.org), is a great way to get acquainted with this hub of Great Lakes history. Adults $11; children $6.50. (Or purchase a combo ticket for all of the Mackinac State Historic Park sites in Mackinaw City: Adults $24; Children $14.) 231.436.4100, mackinacparks.com. Watch a historic sawmill in action and then take the Adventure Tour and see it from the treetops on a zipline or atop a five-story climbing wall at Historic Mill Creek Discovery Park. Adults $9; children $6. (Or purchase a combo ticket for all of the Mackinac State Historic Park sites in Mackinaw City: Adults $24; Children $14.) Adventure Tour is an additional $8 per person. Located 3 miles east of Mackinaw City on US23. mackinacparks.com. Tour the Ice Breaker Mackinaw and hear her harrowing tales of keeping the frozen Great Lakes open for important transport. Adults $11; Children $6. 231.436.9825, themackinaw.org. The Historic Pathway teaches about everything from shipwrecks of the Straits to the history of Native Americans here on a

self-guided walk that follows interpretive stations along a beautiful downtown walking path by the shoreline. Audio tours are available. mackinawchamber.com. At the Jack Pine Lumberjack Shows, watch as two rival camps compete for the title of “Bull of the Woods” in chopping, logrolling and more. Shows seven days a week at 7:30pm. Covered grandstands; shows perform rain or shine. Great fun for all ages. June through early September. Adults $18; kids, seniors $12. 1.5 miles south of Mackinaw City on US23. 231.436.5225, jackpinelumberjackshows.com.

GOLF The Mackinaw Club: A round at this Jerry Matthews-designed course is laid-back and scenic—and a bargain. 231.537.4955, mackinawclub.com. Wilderness Golf Course: With no tee times required, this wonderful walking course is great for a leisurely game. Well-suited for beginners but peppered with enough challenges to keep seasoned golfers engaged. 10770 Cecil Bay Rd., Mackinaw City, 231.537.4973, golfwilderness.com.

KIDS Zip four stories over Mackinaw City for a birds-eye view of two waterfalls and Animal River at Adrenaline Falls Adventure Zipline 231.436.5630. MACKINAC ISLAND

No trip to the top of the Mitt is complete without hopping a ferry to Mackinac Island and its relaxing, lost-in-time charm. There are no cars on the island so you’ll be biking (bring yours over on the ferry or rent one), taking a carriage or strolling a leisurely 19th-century pace to all that this island has to offer. mackinacisland.org. DON’T MISS The 67th Annual Mackinac Island Lilac Festival, June 3-12. This island extravaganza includes a Taste of Mackinac, 10K run, carriage tours and more. But mostly it is about glorying in the blossoms of Mackinac’s famous lilac trees.

GETTING THERE Three ferry lines Arnold, Shepler’s and Star Line service the island from Mackinaw City and St. Ignace. The ride across the sparkling Straits of Mackinac takes about a half-hour. With views of the Mackinac Bridge and the island’s historic buildings coming into focus, you’ll be there before you know it. arnoldline.com; sheplersferry.com, mackinacferry.com.

HISTORY IS FUN! Fort Mackinac The island’s major attraction began its life as the American Revolution wound to a close and went on to serve as a strategic outpost for British (War of 1812) and U.S. armies for more than 115 years. These days, the parade grounds and historic structures have been preserved as interactive exhibits, with costumed interpreters leading demonstrations to show what life was like for the soldiers and families who called this place home. Plug your ears at regularly scheduled cannon and rifle firings, join in old-fashioned children’s games, and try a British soldier’s red coat on for size! Stay for lunch at the fort’s Tea Room (don’t miss their wondrous chocolate shakes!), where you can eat on the deck overlooking the island downtown and out across the Straits. Adults $12; Children ages 5–12 $7. Your Fort Mackinac admission also buys more fun history lessons down on Market Street where you can visit the working Benjamin Blacksmith Shop, watch open-hearth cooking and colonial-era craft demonstrations at the Biddle house, and (coolest of all!) learn about how a voyageur’s gunshot wound changed medical digestive history at the American Fur Company Store. You also won’t want to miss the newly reconstructed Fort Holmes, which the British built to defend the island against the Americans in the war of 1812. Find it on Fort Holmes Road. In Marquette Park, don’t miss the re-creation of a Native American birch-bark chapel. Both sites are free. 231.436.4100, mackinacparks.com.

GET ON THE WATER Great Turtle Kayak Tours offers guided kayak or paddleboard tours of the island shoreline. 231.715.2925. Cruise the Straits aboard a 50-foot custom racing sailboat with Sail Mackinac. 517.712.6918. Or cruise the Straits with Ugly Anne Straits Tour Company. 231.436.5094.

DAVE WEIDNER

GOLF Wawashkamo Golf Course: Michigan’s oldest continuously run golf course also happens to be a Mackinac Island gem, a 9-holer playing across the site of an 1814 battle between the British and the Americans. Ask for hickory golf clubs for a circa-1900 golf experience. 3723 British Landing Rd., Mackinac Island, 906.847.3871, wawashkamo.com. The Greens of Mackinac: 18-hole putting course at Mission Point Resort that rolls along between the deep blue waters of the Straits and the resort’s Bistro on the Greens—a bar where you can order up and sip on the course. missionpoint.com. ARCH ROCK: Mackinac’s unique geologic history created dramatic limestone landmarks, the most famous of which is Arch Rock, a rare formation rising 150 feet on the island’s southeast shore. A must-stop photo op. CARRIAGE RIDES: A horse-drawn buggy tour is a quintessential Mackinac experience—and a fitting way to view the island’s beautiful Victorian homes. Mackinac Island Carriage Tours, the oldest and largest continuously operating horse-and-buggy livery in the world, offers narrated tours of landmarks and historical points of interest. 7278 Main St., Mackinac Island, 906.847.3323, mict.com.

HOP ABOARD A SIP ’N’ SAIL CRUISE: On the Arnold Line’s charming Isle Royale Queen III. Check out the schedule at arnoldline.com.

TOUR THE GOV’S DIGS: Free tours of the Governor’s Summer Home run Wednesdays at 9:30 a.m., starting June 17 and continuing through the summer.

TAKE IN A MOVIE AT MISSION POINT RESORT: The 19thcentury movie theater adds to the charm of a summer schedule filled with family classics. missionpoint.com.

THE FINISH LINE: Two of the Great Lakes’ most revered yacht races, the Port Huron to Mackinac and the Chicago to Mackinac. The races are in July and run a week apart.

WALK WITH BUTTERFLIES: On Mackinac Island at both the Butterfly House (6750 McGulpin St., 906.847.3972, originalbutterflyhouse.com) and Wings of Mackinac (7528 Carriage Rd., 906.847.9464, wingsofmackinac.com.

DAVE WEIDNER

FUDGE: The warm, sweet scent of simmering fudge has been filling Mackinac Island streets since the late 1800s—seems that the climate is perfect. Most of today’s fudge vendors still use the time-honored, labor-intensive technique of “paddling” the warm, liquid fudge on marble slabs until it cools. A slice or two is the ultimate souvenir.
