Anything is possible with the right support.

That’s what Barbra Mikowski, 73, will tell you. And that advice applies whether you’re embarking on a new career, advocating for those in need or seeking money to fund community programs.

From a young age, Mikowski, of Interlochen, says she experienced

the support she needed—from her family and friends and “wonderful mentors”—which allowed her to be part of the first graduating class of Northwestern Michigan College’s associate in nursing program 50 years ago. From that solid foundation, she has continued with her passion for patient advocacy and community activism well past retirement.

During her career and retirement Mikowski has been involved at a pivotal point in several significant new initiatives. “I really feel passionate about them and like to be involved,” she says. “For me, the biggest thing is the tremendous support I always had.”

Also essential, she adds: a willingness to fail.

“I’ve had some really disappointing failures because I am a risk-taker,” she says. “I was told ‘no’ a lot. But I will find a way to do it. When all the doors and windows are closed, you can [still] find a way out. Or, if there’s no way out, down the road, when you are prepared, an opportunity comes up and you go for it.”

She learned early in her career, from a mentor at NMC, the importance of soft pedaling. “I’d get into trouble because I was passionate and impatient. I asked, ‘Can I do this job?’

You can if you know when to look away and when to speak up.”

Mikowski, who has worked as a Munson nurse, in rural home care through the Grand Traverse County Commission on Aging, and at Catholic Human Services for 30 years, retired in 2004. Still, she remains incredibly active, as an older adult resources consultant for Catholic Human Resources and also as a member of several community boards such as the GT Pavilions Foundation Board, Catholic Human Services Board of Directors and the Michigan Center for Rural Health Board of Directors at MSU. In 2015, she was named National Cherry Festival Distinguished Senior.

Mikowski was instrumental in establishing the Barbra Griner Mikowski NMC Student Resource Fund, which provides assistance for nursing students facing hardships that could interrupt their schooling. “I am proud of this program and what it has done for our community,” she says.

“I heard a crystal clear human voice for the first time in years, Maybe decades”

Q&A with Ted Smith 1. When/how did you realize you had a hearing problem?

It’s difficult to estimate how long I struggled with hearing loss because it happens so gradually. I know that I was asking my wife, family, and staff for repetition for many years. I first sought help in 2003, I estimate that I had been experiencing significant hearing loss for ten to fifteen years.

2. What made you decide it was time to do something about it?

I was twenty years into my second career as a pastor, and couldn’t understand most of what was said to me on a daily basis! Asking for remarks to be repeated over and over again is embarrassing, especially when your career involves listening and then responding appropriately.

3. How did you decide on/find the Audiologist at Hearing Solutions of Northwest Michigan?

Unfortunately, before meeting the doctors at Hearing Solutions of Northwest Michigan, I had received a lot of misinformation and had become skeptical of my ability to find help. In 2008, I discovered Hearing Solutions of Northwest Michigan and saw that it was a local business! I liked that.

4. What happened when you went to Hearing Solutions of Northwest Michigan?

Dr. Leahy and Dr. Sawhill were very encouraging from the outset.

They said that my problem was not as complicated as I had previously been led to believe….and assured me that I would hear again.

5. When you got your hearing aids, what was your reaction?

The audiogram that Dr. Leahy performed showed significant hearing loss. She fitted me with two hearing aids, adjusted them by computer, then held a clipboard in front of her mouth (to prevent lip reading) and asked me what I had for breakfast. My eyes filled with tears as I answered. I heard a crystal clear human voice for the first time in years…maybe decades.

6. How are you benefitting from better hearing/maximizing your hearing potential?

Immediately I found myself able to stay “on track” in office and family conversations.

My staff observed that I was a different person, more engaged and energetic. I was once again feeling alive!

7. What is your best advice to someone who is having hearing difficulty?

Do not wait. If you are acknowledging difficulty hearing….or if your spouse or family is telling you that you have a hearing problem, get help! Your situation will not get better left unattended.

earning from the past, accidental discoveries and open mindedness.

We learn a lot from history, so that rather than repeat itself, it can improve our lives. Applying lessons learned through defeats or victories, our world moves forward, full of innovations and change for the better.

The world of Medicine is influenced by accidental discoveries. “The seeds of great discoveries are constantly floating around us, but they only take root in minds well prepared to receive them.” (American physicist Joseph Herman). Out of curiosity and keen observation of such “accidents,” quinine (treatment for malaria), penicillin and small pox vaccination were discovered. In the field of ophthalmology, the tremendous breakthrough of refractive surgery to correct near and farsightedness started by an accident, literally! In 1974, a Russian boy shattered his spectacles in a bicycle accident and the glass particles cut his corneas. After the cuts healed, the boy could see well without his strong spectacles, and his physician noted that the cuts had reshaped his corneas, and Radial Keratomy (the first refractive surgery) was born!

As the saying goes, “When life gives you lemons (or should I say toxins), make lemonade.” Another fascinating story is how Botox (botulinum toxin A) came to be the revolutionary treatment that safely reduces or eliminates wrinkles without any surgical down time.

Botulinum is a protein toxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium, which is prevalent in soil, dust and various foods (preserved meat, canned food, and honey). A German medical officer and poet documented in 1820 the symptoms of “sausage poison” (botulism in German). His studies on animals and himself, demonstrated that the toxin blocks signals from nerves, so that the affected muscles do not contract, and he considered the application of toxin to treat overactive muscle syndromes. Various therapeutic uses and even chemical warfare were studied, and in 1973, botulinum toxin A was first used for treating overactive eye muscles causing “crossed eyes” or eyelid spasms that would interfere with vision. The FDA approved Botox® (a carefully diluted concentration of this “miracle toxin”) in 1989 for these indications. More recently, the cosmetic benefits to reduce wrinkles of the upper face have become FDA approved and have grown in popularity. When small, dilute amounts are injected directly into muscles of the face, those specific muscles weaken, and the skin overlying the muscle relaxes – smoothing out the fine to deep wrinkles.

Good examples of treatable areas include the deep wrinkles of the upper forehead, frown lines and “crow’s feet”! As treatments are refined for the individual, eyebrow lifts and other subtle facial enhancements can result.

The safety and adjustability of a Botox procedure reassures anyone considering cosmetic or medical treatment. Considering that the effects of the injected protein lasts for approximately three months, the result of a Botox application can be adjusted over time, in dose and location, to achieve the exact cosmetic effect desired. Precise knowledge of the facial muscular anatomy is required. Typically, a doctor will begin with a low dose treatment, to test a patient’s response, and augment it after the full effect is reached (10 days after it is injected) if desired. Careful notes are kept regarding each site and dose, for future treatments. Most patients are elated with the results and give detailed feedback about the effect and endurance of a treatment, “this past treatment was my favorite!” for example. The doctor determines the regularity and treatment based on the patient’s feedback and experience. What a long way we have come, thanks to open mindedness!

life for Brundage, a competitive crosscountry skier and canoe racer who this winter traveled to Finland to participate in the World Masters Cross Country Skiing Championships. He’s also an avid golfer and backcountry canoe camper.

“Being active, just from a physical standpoint, it helps my physical being

but also the mental and emotional part of me,” he says. “Without being active, I think it would be difficult for me to function on a day-to-day basis. It’s just such an integral part of my life.”

“That’s a wonderful place to go hike and enjoy—a good place to get some exercise,” says Brundage, who retired in 2013 after 30 years in the human resources department of Munson. “I’ve always enjoyed endurance sports—triathlons or cross-country skiing or long-distance biking, at a reasonably competitive level. It gives me motivation to stay in pretty good shape.”

These days, Brundage’s focus is not so much on competition as it is simply enjoying his various activities.

“I’m much more enjoying just getting out—hiking or hunting with my bird dog,” he says.

In fact, his hunting dog—Elle, an English Setter now just over 2 years old—plays an important role in Brundage’s continuing commitment to an active and healthy lifestyle. “One of the things I’ve always enjoyed, as a boy growing up on a farm, was bird hunting in the fall. Over the years I didn’t have time to do

that, but closer to retirement I got more into it,” he says. Brundage knows full well that training his setter and making sure she gets exercise means he gets exercise, too.

He spent 25 to 30 days in the field with her in the fall, traversing woods and swamp. “We also enjoy skiing and hiking together,” he says.

Bill and his wife, Pat, are outdoors much of the year. “There’ salways something to do outside, we’ve never let the weather bother us too much,” he says. But the couple has also discovered the benefits of Bikram yoga.

“One of the things I do find as I get older is my body gets stiffer and less flexible. We have found that hot yoga holds that together. It gets you very sweaty, but it’s a very good workout and it really helps with flexibility,” he says. “We try to do that once or twice a week … it’s a great workout, but also helps us enjoy our other activities.”

Slow the Progression of Arthritis

Leading a healthy life as we get older can be complicated by the joint pain of arthritis, but for many people, lifestyle changes can delay the onset or slow the advance of this so very common disease.

There are more than 100 types of arthritis and related diseases.

Osteoarthritis is by far the most common. Over 70 percent of people aged 55 to 78 may have pain and stiffness in their hands, knees, hips, feet and spine related to osteoarthritis, also known as degenerative, old-age or

wear-and-tear arthritis, says Dr. Michael Mawby, a Traverse City rheumatologist in practice for more than 20 years.

Risk factors for osteoarthritis include family history, aging, obesity, previous injury, muscle weakness, overuse, and neurological disorders.

Women are more likely than men to develop osteoarthritis. Once thought to be a disease of aging or previous injury, osteoarthritis is now linked to inflammation in the body, and it is becoming evident that obesity is a very strong risk factor in contributing

to this inflammation and the progression of osteoarthritis.

“The development of osteoarthritis occurs over many years,” Mawby says.

“It’s a very slow progression.” Still, there are ways to manage osteoarthritis, and possibly slow its progression.

Here’s what Mawby suggests: • Maintain a healthy weight.

• Avoid strenuous, repetitive activity on your joints.

• Practice general conditioning and muscle strengthening exercises.

“The stronger your muscles are, the more stable the joints will be, and pain will also be lessened.”

The second most common form of arthritis is rheumatoid arthritis, which affects about 1 percent of the population. Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease, meaning there is whole-body inflammation that can affect not just the joints but also other organs, such as the skin, eyes, and lungs. The disease can occur at any age, but onset typically occurs between 30 and 60 years of age.

Risk factors include family history, smoking, obesity, being female and periodontal disease. Physical therapy, exercise, and weight loss will benefit most types of arthritis, but the good news is that rheumatoid arthritis can successfully be treated with pharmaceutical drugs including the newer drugs known as biologics.

“Biologics have been a huge advance in the last 15 years,” Mawby says. “The treatment bar has been raised, and the majority of patients do great.”

Making new friends and creating lasting connections in your later years, particularly as a woman, is essential for health and well-being. But it doesn’t mean these relationships are always easy to get started.

“Some women retire to this community and leave their friends of 40 to 50 years behind,” says Lori

Wells, director of the Senior Center in Traverse City. “They have to figure out how to make new friends. You’re never too old to need girlfriends, but you do get to a point in your life where it’s hard to make girlfriends.”

Gathering at the Senior Center, located on the shore near downtown Traverse City, is one way women

are able to forge these relationships.

Women who have lost their partners come to the Senior Center in search of reconnecting with girlfriends.

They may have been longtime caregivers and are only now able to focus again on these friendships, or they could be at another life-altering time in life. “They are transitioning,”

Wells says, “whether that’s because they are newly retired, newly divorced or newly widowed.”

The power of girlfriends is undeniable. Time and again Wells sees women connecting in positive ways and truly helping one another navigate these next chapters of life. “This is a place for people with like-mindedness to gather, to take a class in art or an exercise class. They end up connecting with women who have similar interests and are in similar places in life,” Wells says.

What’s even more gratifying to witness, she adds, is watching friendships continue beyond the Senior Center. “We offer trips, and when the brochure comes out these ladies all gather together and talk about where they want to go together. We took a trip to Alaska a few years ago, and these women still get together for lunch on a monthly basis. They didn’t want to lose that connection.” Wells enjoys hearing the women mapping out weekends together, making plans to go out to lunch or to the Film Festival.

The Senior Center Network hosted Woman’s Day on February 27. This all-day event featured motivational speaker Anne Bonney.

The day started with yoga and breakfast, included numerous sessions like self-defense, art classes and massages, and ended with a bonfire on the beach. The center is also starting a new group called Gal Time.

With each passing year science finds more evidence that keeping an active brain means a longer, healthier, more enjoyable life. And what better way to keep your mind alive than engaging in art? Traverse City’s Blackbird Arts, an independent arts school, is here to guide your artful journey. Students find classes in pottery, printmaking, painting, metalsmithing, letter-press and more.

Consider Bob, a 73-year-old man who was a skilled potter in his teens and early 20s. He went on to

become a surgical optometrist and left his art. In retirement he finally returned to his love of pottery, recalls Melissa Johnson, founding director of Blackbird Arts.

Following that 50-year hiatus, something reignited in the man. Bob would “be here eight or 10 hours a day … he’s like family now,” Johnson says.

For artists like Bob, rekindling a long-ago passion or interest in the arts can prove especially gratifying.

“When I ask that question, ‘Why start it now, or come back to it now?’

They all make this clear distinction,” Johnson says. “When they were in their 20s or 30s, it felt like it was for someone else—it wasn’t just for them. Now, it’s for themselves, there’s no audience. They’re able to express themselves and what’s gone on in their life … when they finish [with a piece of art] they see these different sides to themselves that is surprising to them. It’s a wonderful thing to watch happen.”

These second-act artists seem so less inhibited, Johnson has observed.

Blackbird Arts offers studio classes, one-day workshops, and private and small group lessons—all geared toward people of all abilities and taught by regional artists. The popular Friday Arts Nights feature various projects and typically attract artists of all ages.

Blackbird Arts is community focused and strives to be as supportive as possible, no matter the artist’s journey. People facing challenges, like dealing with depression or a chronic illness, often find healing through their participation, Johnson says. Blackbird Arts brings some clay-making classes into area nursing homes.

work, which can be great for those with Parkinson’s or arthritis. The clay is so expressive and easy to manipulate,” Johnson says.

Most important, there’s an intergenerational feel to much of what occurs at Blackbird Arts.

Carolyn Ebbinghaus found herself intrigued with the game she saw being played on a tennis court by a half dozen men. They were using paddles not racquets, a whiffle ball, not a tennis ball, and they weren’t using the whole tennis court.

“I asked them what they were playing, and they said pickleball. I tried it, loved it, and it took over my life,” she says.

The 53-year-old Traverse City resident isn’t joking about it being lifechanging—the sport, which has been

around since the 1960s but has grown in popularity in recent times, is a huge part of her every day. She’s nationally ranked, teaches others how to play and has a pro shop at the YMCA on Boardman Lake, where she sells pickleball equipment and clothing.

This spring Ebbinghaus will travel to Naples, Florida, to play in the U.S. Open Pickleball tournament with her sister, who also is a highly ranked player. ESPN will televise the event, she says. “It took me a while to get [my sister] to play—she came here on vacation, she played it and loved it. She is now just as addicted as I am to the sport. It’s just amazing.”

“It’s huge. About 700 to 800 people are playing in Traverse City alone,” she says, adding the Traverse Area Pickleball Association provides local resources, court locations and more.

“When I started there were just six guys. I just knew it was going to get bigger.”

What is pickleball exactly?

Ebbinghaus describes the game, which is played on badminton-sized courts (sometimes lined over tennis courts), like this: a combination of tennis, Ping-Pong and badminton.

“It’s like playing at a giant Ping-Pong table—and the ball goes fast, but not as fast [as tennis],” she says.

The game is played by people of all ages, though Ebbinghaus, who teaches pickleball lessons in the summer at the Senior Center, says older players are especially attracted

The Alliance for Senior Housing makes finding a home later in life much easier, thanks to its annual Parade of Senior Homes. The free daylong tours, which take place in Grand Traverse and Leelanau Counties, offer snapshots of a variety of residential choices. These include independent living retirement centers, assisted living, adult foster care and nursing homes. You’ll become educated on the types of housing, but also receive information on any funding options

and how VA, Medicare/Medicaid may be available. The Alliance charters a bus for up to 29 people per tour.

Each tour features four complexes.

Key Housing Terms Clarified Deciding where to live as one ages is challenging enough. The jargon of senior housing doesn’t make it much easier. We’re here to help with a quick-reference list of common terms.

Independent Living: A straightforward term describing living situations for seniors who are still able to live on their own and manage the necessities and social aspects of their lives. In some communities, subsidized independent living apartments are available for low-income seniors.

Aging in Place: Often used to describe strategies for designing new homes or modifying existing ones to accommodate aging seniors.

A growing number of builders and contractors specialize in Aging in Place design and modification.

The term can also refer to staying in a facility that takes a person who is high-functioning all the way through end-of-life.

Continuing Care Retirement Community: Usually defined as a “one-campus” system of independent housing, assisted living facilities, and nursing homes. Residents shift easily from one type of housing to another as their needs change, preventing disruptive moves. A spouse who is healthy enough to live independently can stay near a husband or wife in an adjoining nursing facility.

Retirement Communities: A term for seniors-only apartments with amenities such as meals, laundry, housekeeping, transportation, carports, storage and activities. Amenities are optional in some retirement communities but included in rent at others.

Retirement communities provide less care than assisted living facilities; residents need to be able to live unsupervised. Most offer annual leases with early-out clauses for medical situations.

Senior Residential Club: Designed for both independent seniors and those needing assistance, this is a community-focused “city-in-miniature.”

Residents live within walking distance of restaurants, yoga studios, coffee shops, art galleries, and more. It also has a multi-generational component since the area attracts people of all ages to enjoy its vibrant community.

Assisted Living: A broad category that describes options between independent living and skilled long-term care. In many facilities, residents live in private apartments or rooms but receive care tailored to their level of ability. Services may be as simple as meals and cleaning, but could also include more extensive care, such as dressing, bathing, monitoring medications and transportation for appointments and shopping. Most assisted living facilities serve residents through hospice and end-of-life.

Depending on the services they provide, assisted living facilities are not necessarily licensed in Michigan. Medicare does not provide funds for assisted living.

Adult Foster Care and Homes for the Aged: These are state licensing definitions for facilities that care for seniors who can no longer live independently but do not need continuous medical support. In addition to on-site supervision, seniors at these facilities get help with bathing, grooming, dressing, eating, walking, toileting and medications. (The state defines smaller operations, often based in private homes and residential neighborhoods, as adult foster care.

Facilities with more than 20 residents are licensed as homes for the aged.)

Some seniors prefer the cozy atmosphere of smaller residential homes,

while others find more stimulation at larger facilities that offer a range of activities. Medicaid is accepted at some of these homes.

Skilled Nursing Facility: Describes facilities for people with mental or physical impairment and extensive medical needs. Skilled nursing facilities, commonly called nursing homes, have in-house activities for stimulation and rehab services for short-term stays.

They are also the most expensive option. According to federal statistics, Medicaid pays for seven out of every 10 nursing home patients. So unless a senior is wealthy or has good long-term care insurance, the number of Medicaid beds in a nursing home may be an important selection criteria.

Adult Day Services: A service that allows seniors to drop in at a residential care facility for specific periods during the day, especially helpful for people with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers. The senior at adult daycare gets assistance and social interaction while the caregiver is able to go to work or run errands, or just take a break. When caregivers need more time, they may use overnight respite at certain residential facilities. Such short-term stays help a senior become familiar with the staff and environment of a facility that may eventually become their full-time residence.

Long-Term Care: General term for 24-hour medical and personal care.

Most commonly, long-term care is provided in a skilled nursing facility.

Skilled Rehab: General terms for those individuals who are going to a nursing home for a short-term stay while receiving some type of therapy.

Agencies, Here to Help Senior Citizens and their families are often surprised at the extensive resources for seniors available free or at low cost, thanks to tax support. The following Up North agencies offer services to seniors of all income levels and situations.

Area Agency on Aging in Northwest Michigan (AAANM) AAANM provides key public services as both an information clearinghouse and as a services provider assisting senior and disabled individuals to remain in/or return to the community.

AAANM information specialists are a good place to start for an overview of programs and services available to older adults and their caregivers. Options Counselors are available for more in-depth assistance identifying needs and navigating the system. In addition benefits counselors are also available by appointment to answer questions and troubleshoot problems with Medicare, Medicaid or

prescription drug policies and claims.

This information and counseling is the best deal around—free, unbiased and available to all.

The agency also provides some direct services to specific populations, such as job searches for low-income seniors and care management for the “frail elderly” who need multiple services to stay in their homes. Most direct services, however, are provided through local Councils/Commissions on Aging and private pay agencies.

This regional organization, with local headquarters in Traverse City, has overseen and distributed government funds to service providers throughout 10 counties in Northwest Lower Michigan since 1974.

Council on Aging or Commission on Aging Each county in Northwest Lower Michigan has either a council or a commission that provides services directly to seniors. Subsidized by local millage funds and/or state and federal dollars, these agencies help eligible seniors with yard work, house cleaning, personal care, transportation, and much more. Some services may have waiting lists or limitations on the number of hours provided.

Payment is usually required, typically on a sliding scale. Services and terms vary widely from county to county— important to remember for seniors who plan to relocate.

Long Term Care Ombudsman The Long Term Care Ombudsman program is available for concerned individuals to investigate complaints, suggest remedies and assist with resident rights payments, issues, guardianship and nursing home placement.

Senior Centers Many communities have senior centers that provide recreational and social activities, including some that are run by county aging commissions or councils. In Traverse City, the Senior Center is the hot spot for everything from pickleball to computer classes.

The center brings in other services such as foot care and legal assistance, in addition to being a senior nutrition site for the Northwest Michigan Community Action Agency. The Alzheimer’s Association The Alzheimer’s Association serves Northern Lower Michigan with two regional offices in Traverse City and Alpena. The association offers many programs and services that benefit caregivers as well as people living with Alzheimer’s disease. A support group for caregivers can be found in each Northern Michigan County as well as care consultation, care management services, education and training, and lending libraries with books, videos and DVD’s.
