Engage to Thrive Give, and the world gives back; this is a truth David Crouse knows.
KELLY REWA
TEXT BY HEATHER JOHNSON DUROCHER
Driving the streets of downtown Petoskey one evening this winter, holiday lights illuminating their path through the village, David and Teresa Crouse were struck by the beauty and tranquility of the place that’s long been a part of their family’s history and, for the past 15 years, their permanent home. “It is so charming—healthy and vibrant. Most nights, even in the winter, you can’t get a parking space downtown because so many people are there,” says David Crouse, 61. “It’s a picture-postcard city that really lives up to its heritage. It’s a wonderful community.” Crouse’s passion for Petoskey stems in part from his family’s connections to the area: he’s a fifth generation Northern Michigan summer resident, with his family’s ties to the Bay View community dating to 1895. After graduating from college in 1977, he took his first broadcasting job in nearby Charlevoix, working to help put the radio station WKHQ on the air. From that experience, he “understood that you could actually live up here year round and make a living.” Still, it would take a couple of decades and time spent in several large cities before Crouse, a Emmy Award–winning independent film producer, would find his way back to Northern Michigan—and make his own mark on the region he loves so much. Crouse and his young family, living in Chicago at the time, decided to make a big change 4 From the publisher of Traverse, Northern Michigan’s Magazine

Our Experience Improves
Yours.
U.S. News & World Report has ranked Munson Medical Center as one of the nation’s best hospitals for cardiology and heart surgery. We do more heart procedures – and we’ve been doing them longer – than anyone else in northern Michigan. Simply put, our experience will improve yours. We have one of the lowest 30-day heart failure readmission rate in the nation,* and have been named one of “100 hospitals and health systems with great heart programs.”** Great care and great outcomes make us a national leader in cardiac care. Ask your physician to refer you to the Munson Healthcare team. We’ll feel better when you do. 800-637-4033 | myheartexperts.org

following 9/11. “After 9/11, while we were not touched personally with events of that day, we were, as most Americans were, deeply touched emotionally,” he says. “My wife and I made a lifestyle decision, so we pulled our daughter out of her school and moved to Walloon Lake.” The couple had purchased property on the lake, “ostensibly to build a small summer home,” he says. “Instead we built a yearround home and live here permanently. And we are not unique— there is a definite fundamental change taking place, particularly in the Grand Traverse area, parts of Harbor Springs and Petoskey area, with individuals like me who are living here and being actively involved in their business.” He sees this as a shift in mindset, in what people believe can be accomplished outside of big cities. “When I was up here in the early ’80s, it was not the case, it was a very different scene up here. But now, there is more opportunity.” Along with tending to his thriving production company Crouse Entertainment Group—he’s currently working on a film about Michigan as well as one focusing on the friendship between authors C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien— Crouse is heavily involved in community organizations and endeavors. He is founder of the monthlong C.S. Lewis Festival in Petoskey, has been active with the Tip of the Mitt Watershed, and sits on boards for McLaren Regional Hospital Foundation and the Great Lakes Center for Performing Arts. He and his wife also are underwriters of five major photography
exhibitions at Crooked Tree Arts Center, where Crouse’s mother, Virginia, played an integral role for many years. “I grew up in a family where [community involvement] was not a choice, it was expected. That you were involved beyond what you were doing in schools—you were involved in the community. My parents and grandparents, they led by example.” Having such strong family ties to the area helped David and Teresa Crouse feel instantly at home when they moved north. “It was very easy to be accepted into the community and to kind of pick and choose the various cultural and civic and religious organizations to be involved with,” he says. “You really can have an impact.” And David and Teresa Crouse have no plans of living anywhere else—or slowing down much at all. “I have no intentions of retiring—I don’t have any interest in that whatsoever,” he says. “That’s just not me, packing it up and going to Florida and playing golf. Not that there’s anything wrong with that … but we like to water ski, snowshoe, hike, bike. If you sit, you rust. We went from being city folk to being outdoor enthusiasts. Don’t get me wrong, we still miss the city, but our life is so much more illuminated in different respects that we haven’t looked back.”

Out riding their road bikes a few years ago, on a stretch between Elk Rapids and Acme, Greg and Sharon Hodge happened upon a group of fellow cyclists. “We stopped and got talking,” Greg, 70, recalls. “And then we got to know them. They’re a great group of people.” Today, the Hodges and the group they met all ride together on a consistent basis—“We call ourselves ‘Over the Hills,’ part of the [Traverse City] Senior Center Network,’” Greg says—and the members take turns sponsoring or leading rides all around the region. More than 100 people signed up last year, and a core group of about 20 to 25 ride on a regular basis, with the others riding less often and for shorter distances. For Greg and Sharon Hodge, and the smaller group of what he describes as a bit more “hard core,” cycling anywhere from 80 to 120 miles per week together is typical. “We’re not really competitive. We just enjoy rides all over the place,” he says. This past summer, Greg and Sharon logged 3,100 miles—an impressive feat for any cyclist and an incredible one for Sharon, 69, who lives with multiple sclerosis. “About 12 years ago she was diagnosed with MS. She’s been very fortunate—she’s been very active and she is determined to not let it slow her down. And it hasn’t,” Greg says. “She exercises more than I do.”
Sharon Hodge, also a longtime runner, didn’t let a couple of road accidents deter her activity for long, either. “Two years ago, we had two accidents in the summer—she had a bad accident on the bike and also one in the car. She had a broken clavicle and smashed elbow and hip … that was all in one summer,” Greg says. “But we had a good summer last summer.” A popular riding spot for the Hodges’ senior group is around Suttons Bay—“the Leelanau Peninsula Heritage Trail is really nice, with spectacular scenery,” Greg says. They also enjoy riding toward Charlevoix, along Torch Lake and on Old Dixie Highway. To get there, they’ll use the TART Trail, heading east toward Acme and M-72. “We’ll cross the road [M-72] and take Bates Road north, zig-zag and end up on US31 and take that for two and half miles into Elk Rapids.” Staying active “is a conscious decision,” Greg says. “I never met a cookie I didn’t like, I like potato chips as much as anyone. It’s portion control. So, hey, you watch your weight, you watch what you eat … I see people my age overweight and huffing and puffing and I just don’t want to go there,” he says. “Sometimes you don’t have a choice, disease gets you. Decent genes help—my dad is 94 and my mom is 92, they’re pretty sharp and active—but for us it’s a lifestyle decision.” 4 From the publisher of Traverse, Northern Michigan’s Magazine

THANK YOU NORTHERN MICHIGAN FOR 25 YEARS
Living the Up North Dream I grew up in a family of small business owners. My husband grew up on a local dairy and cherry farm. Hard work, family, and faith were values instilled in us long ago. When I started my career 25 years ago, I thought I’d be moving to a big city. Instead, we have been blessed with a life up north and reside on a 100 acre farm across the road from where I was born. Thank you northern Michigan for your business and your trust through the years.

Janice Dustin
COURTESY OF JANICE DUSTIN

Janice Dustin is always on the look-out for an outdoor adventure, no matter the time of year or type of weather. The 68-year-old keeps news clippings of articles she finds that offer ways to explore Northern Michigan. “My husband and I have found all kinds of fun places,” says Janice, who lives in Traverse City. This is how she discovered the trails off Brown Bridge Road—in the Grand Traverse Conservation District’s Brown Bridge Quiet Area—which are now among the couple’s favorite spots to snowshoe and hike with friends. Last year, Janice learned of winter paddling. “I was reading about rafting from East Jordan and I thought, Oh, my gosh, does this ever sound fun.” She promptly reached out to her cycling friends through the Traverse City Senior Center to gauge their interest in the adventure. “They said, ‘sure,’ so I called the rafting place. We had probably 15 people, and it was just—I felt like I was back in seventh grade. One of the fellas was sitting in front of me and all of the trees were covered in snow. When we got close to the shoreline, he would grab those trees, and I was so wet and we made so much noise … It was so beautiful with all the snow. It was so much fun.” Afterward, the group enjoyed lunch and beer-tasting at Short’s Brewery in Bellaire. “When I plan an outing, I am always all about the food,” Dustin says, laughing. Janice credits her mom with nurturing a love of the outdoors—and an active lifestyle—throughout her childhood. “My mom and her dad used to take a walk together every night after dinner,” she says. “And my mom and
dad, they were very active, too. They started biking. We lived on a lake and my dad would get up and go for a swim before going to work.” When her kids were in preschool, Janice and her mom would go into town on bikes and pick up the children. Janice raised three daughters with husband Jim, 70, in Lake Orion where she grew up. Now, with four grandchildren and one “great-grandbaby,” the couple continues to stay active—in part “to keep up with them,” she says. They also enjoy the many friends they’ve met since coming north in the summers to their cottage on the south side of Elk Lake and then when moving up here permanently about 13 years ago. It was shortly after 9/11 when Janice lost her job at an ad agency, prompting the couple to retire in Northern Michigan. They now divide their time between a condo in Traverse City and the cottage on Elk Lake. Friends encouraged them to get involved with the many activities at the Senior Center. It’s where they’ve connected with people for hiking, snowshoeing and cycling excursions. Janice, who strives to reach 12,000 steps each day, also spends time at the gym, where she takes a twiceweekly “Silver and Fit” aerobics class. Last summer, to celebrate her 68th birthday, she and Jim rode 68 miles through the U.P. “For me, going and playing bridge, that’s not what I want to do,” she says. “I want to be out burning calories. I want to be the older people who are active.”

The fresh air and warm hospitality of Northern Michigan certainly have been a wonderful welcome for brothers Dr. Dennis Spillane and Dr. Shawn Spillane. The duo opened Bellaire Dental Health Care in June of 2014 and haven’t slowed down since. We are happy to announce the new changes to our Dental Health Care family! The support and referrals from our wonderful patients and the caring atmosphere our great team at Bellaire Dental Health Care has provided, has allowed us to thrive and grow. We have opened an additional dental practice in the Village of Acme at US-31 and M-72. Keeping patient satisfaction and convenience in mind, it seemed a perfect spot for our new dental practice with the rapid growth that has been happening in the area. With our growth and adding a new location we are also excited to introduce our new associate: Dr. Trevor Kay. It was with great care we handpicked Dr. Kay to work with us to serve you. We have no reservations in saying you will come to love and trust him. He is a very laid-back, easy-to-talk-to doctor with extensive
dental training. Dr. Kay is a graduate of the University of Detroit Mercy Dental School and grew up in metropolitan Detroit but always knew Northern Michigan was where he wanted to practice dentistry. He feels honored to be able to work and live in this community and is looking forward to developing meaningful relationships with his new patients. Acme Dental Health Care is committed to providing the same high level of care as Bellaire Dental Health Care for you and your family members. The 30-years plus of experience that both Dr. Dennis and Dr. Shawn each have brings a level of expertise to the practice which is second to none. Stay Limber; Stay Healthy Aging muscles put ever more emphasis on smart stretching.
KELLY REWA
TEXT BY HEATHER JOHNSON DUROCHER
Struggling with arthritis in his lower back, as well as “debilitating back spasms,” the 66-year-old man was losing hope he’d ever return to the athletic activities he’d always enjoyed. His frustration—and, eventually, his depression—only grew as various attempts at improving his health didn’t pan out. It was through physical therapy that he fina ly was able to find relief—and later return to road biking, hiking and running. His improved core strength meant greater balance and fl xibility. Northern Michigan physical therapist Andrew Gorecki worked with this client, helping him develop a set of exercise tools to promote his physical activity over the long term as well as a skill set to deal with those short-term setbacks. While working our muscles is important at any age, a couple of things start to happen as we get older that can lead to loss of fl xibility and the ability to do the activities we enjoy, says Gorecki, of Superior Physical Therapy. As our tissue gets tight, joint space decreases, he says. “And when space becomes less, the joints start to grind on each other and wear out. This is when you might hear about knee and hip replacements [as possibilities], and bone-on-bone. The reason for this is because of the fl xibility that’s gone away.” The spine is a common area where lost space between bones occurs. “There are nerves that come out of your spine, and those nerves start to get compressed, leading to back pain,” Gorecki says. “That’s the most important reason to keep fl xibility optimal, so we don’t have pain when we move.” Another reason for loss of fl xibility as we age: muscles aren’t necessarily lengthened as frequently as they should be. “Our muscles, they become strong when they become long,” Gorecki says. “The simplest principle to remember is ‘use it or lose it.’ It’s also using it in the right way.”
Becoming sedentary—sitting for too long, whether behind or desk or on the couch—is a big issue, he says. In addition, moving our bodies in the same ways all the time is another concern. “Loss of rotation throughout the body becomes a problem,” he says. “Moving in multiple directions is what we try to teach people.” Gorecki points out that suddenly starting to incorporate rotational exercises into your routine isn’t necessarily wise; it’s important to understand how to do these moves, such as twisting your upper torso and arms, in safe ways. Here’s what he recommends: » Consider signing up for yoga or Pilates, which can increase fl xibility as well as balance and core strength. » For low- to no-impact movements, try Tai Chi, which involves standing upright and going through full-body movements. » Research fl xibility. Superior Physical Therapy, for example, has an online library, including a library specific to flexibility. The clinic also hosts free workshops each month, focusing on different topics like fl xibility and balance, foot and lower back

Living in Color Charles Murphy teaches others to find the joy in watercolor that he feels.

They come to their first class a bit intimidated—nervous about trying something different and meeting new people—but soon enough they fall into a rhythm. “It’s like riding a bicycle—all of a sudden there’s that familiarity,” says Northern Michigan artist Charles Murphy of those who take his beginner watercolor course at the Traverse City Senior Center. “It has a freeing sensation to it. It’s a fresh and spontaneous medium.” These art classes, which meet Mondays and Wednesdays, are open to anyone interested in watercolor painting. It’s an intimate setting—class size ranges from six to 12 students on any given day— and Murphy finds that along with discovering (or rediscovering) a love of the art form, great connections are made. “Friendships are built in these classes and there’s camaraderie,” he says. “After a very short time, everyone is very comfortable. We humorously call ourselves West Bay Watercolorists.” Murphy, 65, has worked with more than 40 galleries in his career and has exhibited with the American Watercolor Society and International Society of Experimental Artists. Murphy first taught watercolor at the senior center in the 1980s, and returned to this position about eight years ago when asked to re-start the program. 4 From the publisher of Traverse, Northern Michigan’s Magazine

“ I derive
great reward in sharing the techniques and being able to discuss with them their own personal growth.”
While some participants are beginner painters, quite a few others have worked in watercolor before and find working alongside others boosts their confidence and c aft. “They find it’s very benefi ial to do it in a group. It always ratchets up their skill set,” Murphy says. All ages are welcome, too—you don’t have to be a senior to take Murphy’s classes. Likewise, the skill of students ranges widely. Students tend to be retired or semi-retired and are looking to express themselves creatively through a medium that has a lot of color and energy. “I derive a great amount of reward in sharing the techniques and being able to discuss with them their own personal growth,” Murphy says. “I tend to make these very concentrated classes. They can do this in a very relaxed, social setting. I give them a lot of clinical and technical information.”
The senior center’s location can’t be beat for teaching art, he says. “It’s one of the best classroom spaces in all of Northern Michigan— there’s a perfect north light, it’s right on the beach, the view is terrific,” he says. Sometimes, during the warmer months, he’ll take the class outdoors. Some of his students have completed artwork that has garnered awards and recognition. “One of my greatest joys is to see some of them go on to win exhibitions at the Michigan Watercolor Society show. It makes me feel like I’m doing something right.”

Are you a person who enjoys being with friends? Do you want to stay a part of your community? Is your familiar home beginning to encompass a shrinking world? How would you answer these questions right now: Do you have a plan for each day that you find satisfying? Do you sometimes skip meals or eat less healthily because you don’t want to cook? Are there things you do less often because preparing or getting there feels burdensome? Do you wish you could spend more time with friends or family?
Cordia’s membership team has resources to help you decide if a move to our senior community would be right for you. We can help guide you through the doubts, show you our beautiful residence options until you find just the right one, and then work with you to make your move smooth and efficient.

Sandwich Generation Survival Strategies Helping children, caring for parents … and still taking time for yourself. It’s complicated!
KELLY REWA
TEXT BY HEATHER JOHNSON DUROCHER
The statistics tell the story of the so-called “sandwich generation”: more than 32 percent of Baby Boomers—those born between 1946 and 1964—are finan ially supporting at least one family member. And more than half of Americans with at least one parent 65 years of age and older would describe their lives as stressful because of their involvement with that family member. Caring for both children and aging parents simultaneously creates definite pressures, says Mary Rogers, a northern Michigan entrepreneur, mentor and host of the podcast Experience 50, a show
celebrating midlife while addressing the myriad issues that come along with it. “Their lives are no longer quite their own,” she says of the sandwich generation. “As a group, we are having to postpone our own retirement because we are finan ially supporting our adult children or paying for their college.” Indeed, more than 30 percent of Millennials—those born in the 1980s and ranging to the mid-1990s to early 2000s—are living with a parent, an increase of 50 percent since the 1980s, Rogers says. Added to this is tending to parents who
require attention and support as well, whether for issues related to health or finance “I have heard so many stories,” says Rogers, who is in her mid-50s and is the mother of a 16-year-old daughter and a 30-year-old son. “Getting together with my friends, we all talk about our parents. We used to talk about our kids. It’s that delicate situation of treating your parents with the respect they deserve while mandating ways to live that helps them. We are this very active generation, going to concerts, hiking and kayaking, and we’re all one cell phone call away and having 4

Ski hills, bike trails, hiking paths, beaches to wander … find it all at MyNorth.com/outdoors.
During their careers, as each work week of winter came to a close, Marcia and Ward Veldman looked forward to heading north for a weekend of downhill skiing at their condo. And after retiring from their jobs in Grand Rapids—Marcia was a legal secretary, and Ward owned an advertising agency—the couple continued to make the trek to Nub’s Nob or Boyne Highlands to hit the slopes. Eventually, though, they thought about making Northern Michigan their permanent home. “It seemed silly to us to own two homes when we were spending a lot of time up here,” says Marcia, 76, of the chalet they owned at Nub’s and their home in Grand Rapids. “We thought, We should consider moving up here.” They made the move six years ago, and a year later relocated to a condo on the golf course at Boyne Highlands. Living there allows the couple to enjoy a year-round active lifestyle. “We appreciate the outdoors even more now than when we were working,” she says. “Up here, we’re more active. We golf more, we
ski more—I ski probably five days a week, that’s what we really enjoy doing, so that’s what we devote ourselves to.” A big bonus: They’ve made countless friends through their outdoor pursuits. “I consider skiing and golfi g a social event as well as enjoying the sport itself,” Marcia says. “Whenever we go over to ski at Nub’s or the Highlands, we always run into someone we know. There is always someone to ski with.” During the off-season, the Veldmans work out two to three days a week at the health club. “We realize how important it is to have a strong body,” Marcia says. She also participates in a book club and volunteers a couple of days a week at the humane society in Petoskey. “We probably have more contact with our friends in the community here than we did in Grand Rapids,” she says. “We know everybody. We have a nice community. I feel connected to my community here. It’s a nice way to live.” From the publisher of Traverse, Northern Michigan’s Magazine

90 over 90 A tribute to amazing people who laid the foundation for today’s Northern Michigan.
COURTESY OF GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY SENIOR CENTER NETWORK
TEXT BY HEATHER JOHNSON DUROCHER
When Lori Wells thinks about all that Northern Michigan offers residents, from arts and culture to active lifestyle opportunities, she considers the myriad contributions made by the oldest members of the community. “These are the people who have lived here their whole lives, in one way or another, and they’ve made it so nice for me to raise my family here,” she says.
As the longtime Senior Center Network Manager for Grand Traverse County, Wells knows this particular group of people quite well. She also thought it was time to recognize their signifi ant impacts on the region. “I got the idea after seeing the ‘40 Under 40’ list that the [Traverse City] Business News does,” she says. “I thought, We need to do something like that with seniors.”
The result: “90 Over 90,” a recognition of individuals age 90 and older in Grand Traverse County. “The idea was to bring attention to people in the community who have basically built the community for the rest of us to enjoy,” Wells says. At the inaugural event last spring, 90 Over 90 brought together some 70 people at a celebratory event at the Hagerty Center in Traverse City. A yearbook also 4

was made, highlighting these remarkable people in the community. “We were looking for people who are still active in the community, still playing a role in the community,” she says, adding that seeing everyone’s photos in the yearbook was enlightening. “It’s hard to believe that some of them do not look 90 at all—90 isn’t what it used to be.” Wells hopes to have 90 people in the program this year. A May 5 event is planned at the Hagerty Center. “We’re quite sure people who came last year will want to come again. We’re looking at it as a club—a 90s club. Once you’re part of it, you will be welcomed back. And if people pass away, they will be remembered,” she says. Taking part in the springtime celebration proved especially rewarding for Wells, who felt she was looking upon “a sea of history and knowledge” as she looked across the crowd. “I saw a couple of ladies who hadn’t seen each other in a few years. To see that smile on their faces ... and they all dressed up to the nines for it. You could tell they were honored and felt valued at this event,” she says. Many of the 90-somethings had family with them, which was also an important part of the event. The keynote speaker was a gentleman in his 90s who lived at Cordia, and he discussed how important it is to keep your mind active and engaged. “It was heartwarming to see that age is just a number. You make a conscious decision how you want to be engaged in your community as you grow older,” Wells says.

Key Housing Terms Clarifie Deciding where to live as one ages is challenging enough. The jargon of senior housing doesn’t make it much easier. We’re here to help with a quick-reference list of common terms. INDEPENDENT LIVING: A straightforward term describing living situations for seniors who are still able to live on their own and manage the necessities and social aspects of their lives. In some communities, subsidized independent living apartments are available for low-income seniors. AGING IN PLACE: Often used to describe strategies for designing new homes or modifying existing ones to accommodate aging seniors. A growing number of builders and contractors specialize in Aging in Place design and modifi ation. The term can also refer to staying in a facility that takes a person who is high-functioning all the way through end-of-life. CONTINUING CARE RETIREMENT COMMUNITY: Usually defined as a “one-campus” system of independent housing, assisted living facilities, and nursing homes. Residents shift easily from one type of housing to another as their needs change, preventing disruptive moves. A spouse who is healthy enough to live independently can stay near a husband or wife in an adjoining nursing facility. RETIREMENT COMMUNITIES: A term for seniors-only apartments with amenities such as meals, laundry, housekeeping, transportation, carports, storage and activities. Amenities are optional in some retirement communities but included in rent at others. Retirement communities provide less care than assisted living facilities; residents need to be able to live unsupervised.
Most offer annual leases with earlyout clauses for medical situations. SENIOR RESIDENTIAL CLUB: Designed for both independent seniors and those needing assistance, this is a community-focused “cityin-miniature.” Residents live within walking distance of restaurants, yoga studios, coffee shops, art galleries, and more. It also has a multi-generational component since the area attracts people of all ages to enjoy its vibrant community. ASSISTED LIVING: A broad category that describes options between independent living and skilled long-term care. In many facilities, residents live in private apartments or rooms but receive care tailored to their level of ability. Services may be as simple as meals and cleaning, but could also include more extensive care, such as dressing, bathing, monitoring medications and transportation for appointments and shopping. Most assisted living facilities serve residents through hospice and end of life. Depending on the services they provide, assisted living facilities are not necessarily licensed in Michigan. Medicare does not provide funds for assisted living. ADULT FOSTER CARE AND HOMES FOR THE AGED: These are state licensing definition for facilities that care for seniors who can no longer live independently but do not need continuous medical support. In addition to on-site supervision, seniors at these facilities get help with bathing, grooming, dressing, eating, walking, toileting and medications. (The state defines smaller operations, often based in private homes and residential neighborhoods, as adult foster care. Facilities with more than 20 residents are licensed as homes for the aged.) Some seniors prefer the cozy atmosphere of smaller residential homes,
while others find more stimulation at larger facilities that offer a range of activities. Medicaid is accepted at some of these homes. SKILLED NURSING FACILITY: Describes facilities for people with mental or physical impairment and extensive medical needs. Skilled nursing facilities, commonly called nursing homes, have in-house activities for stimulation and rehab services for short-term stays. They are also the most expensive option. According to federal statistics, Medicaid pays for seven out of every 10 nursing home patients. So unless a senior is wealthy or has good long-term care insurance, the number of Medicaid beds in a nursing home may be an important selection criteria. ADULT DAY SERVICES: A service that allows seniors to drop in at a residential care facility for specific periods during the day, especially helpful for people with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers. The senior at adult daycare gets assistance and social interaction while the caregiver is able to go to work or run errands, or just take a break. When caregivers need more time, they may use overnight respite at certain residential facilities. Such short-term stays help a senior become familiar with the staff and environment of a facility that may eventually become their full-time residence. LONG-TERM CARE: General term for 24-hour medical and personal care. Most commonly, long-term care is provided in a skilled nursing facility. SKILLED REHAB: General terms for those individuals who are going to a nursing home for a short-term stay while receiving some type of therapy.
