BEACHES
The sandy shoreline of West Grand Traverse Bay along Grandview Parkway in Traverse City is divided into separate beaches—each with its own sunny day personality.
Tucked among tree-lined neighborhoods near Northwestern Michigan College, East Bay Park offers restrooms, a picnic shelter and shallow water, making it ideal for young families. Located at the foot of East Front Street, where it meets East Grand Traverse Bay.
DOWNTOWN
NORTH OF TRAVERSE CITY
Clinch Park Beach, with its 1,500 sandy feet of frontage on West Grand Traverse Bay just north of downtown, is the hub of beach life in this city. Find picnic tables, restrooms and a splash pad for little ones. A swimming area is staffed with lifeguards from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. from mid-June through Labor Day. Get there safely from downtown via the pedestrian tunnel that goes under the parkway at Cass Street. Looking for a pickup game of volleyball? Volleyball Beach is just a bit west of Union Street, at the foot of Hall Street and the parkway. Find restrooms and a picnic shelter at West End Beach at the foot of Division Street. Sunset Beach is a lesser-known stretch of sand tucked at the foot of Hope Street and flanked on the east side by the Hagerty Center/Maritime Academy Complex. Bryant Park at the base of Old Mission Peninsula, where Garfield Avenue meets Peninsula Drive, is a wonderful beach outfitted with a playground, picnic tables, charcoal grills, shade trees and squeaky-clean restrooms.
The 900-foot-long beach at Acme Bayside Park is outfitted with picnic tables, basketball and shuffleboard courts, and public restrooms. Enter the park just south of the Acme intersection of US31 North and M72. Sayler Park is 3.5 miles north of Acme at the end of Yuba Road. Shelters available for rent. acmetownship.org
INLAND LAKES
The sandy swimming area at Taylor Park on Long Lake has a volleyball court, dock and picnic area; Long Lake Grocery is just down the street for snacks and picnic fare. Located on North Long Lake Road, 10 minutes west of downtown TC. Gilbert Park, also on Long Lake, has amenities similar to Taylor Park’s. Find it about a mile southwest of Taylor Park off CR610. About 10 miles southeast of Traverse City Arbutus Lake No. 5 is just 44 feet at its deepest point, so expect warm, shallow waters. The public beach is at the lake’s north end, at the mouth of a charming little brook. Off East Arbutus Lake Road. Find a sweet little downtown small-town beach on the pretty 627-acre Fife Lake at Fife Lake City Park.
