BEER.

What makes Bagger Dave’s beef burgers so deliciously different? First of all, they’re made fresh, not frozen. And each is made with our Prime Rib Recipe. Yes, that’s prime rib. There’s only one way to make it better. Order our Fresh-Cut Potato Fries or Dave’s Sweet Potato Chips® on the side. They’re gluten-free and trans-fat free. OK, there’s another way to make it better. Wash it down with one of our craft beers.

We also make an audacious turkey burger if you’re not into the beef thing. It’s 15% leaner than beef. Gobble one up when you get the chance.

The accolades keep rolling in for this small, vibrant city set on one of

the planet’s largest and most pristine freshwater bays. Last year, The Huffington Post called Traverse City one of “six small towns to visit this summer.” Travel + Leisure Magazine named it to a list of “America’s 20 Most Romantic Towns” and Horizon Travel Magazine kicked off 2015 with a call-out to its “Must See American Cities,” list.

Good to Know About Village at Grand Traverse Commons:

This 63-acre campus on Traverse City’s west side is graced by trees, trails and stunning 19th-century Victorian Italianate architecture. One of the largest historic and adaptive reuse projects in the country, the Commons as locals know it, began its life as a state hospital. Now it bustles with residential units, shops, restaurants and even a winery. THEVILLAGETC.COM.

Old Mission Peninsula, a 22-mile-long finger of land that divides East and West Grand Traverse Bays, boasts beachy coastline, rolling hillsides, cherry orchards, wineries, vineyards and breathtaking views. It’s the perfect destination for a meandering daytrip. Read on for more on the beaches, wineries and eateries of Old Mission Peninsula. OLDMISSION.COM.

This Frontier League ball club is a beloved part of Traverse City’s summertime traditions. Reasonable ticket prices, between-inning kids games, giveaways, fireworks, and shenanigans from the team’s mascot bears make this a perfect family-friendly outing. The park’s laid-back outfield lawn seating is another nice touch. Simply bring your own blanket and a jacket for the late innings, and make it your own field of dreams. Wuerfel Park, 333 STADIUM DR., TC, 231.943.0100,

Eat: Among the many Traverse City restaurants leading the wave of hyper-local cuisine, Mission Table is at the front of the pack, with an elegant menu inspired by ingredients from the region’s farms and fisheries. Local wine, spirits and craft brews, too. (13512 PENINSULA DR., TC, 231.223.4222, MISSIONTABLE. NET). Next door find Jolly Pumpkin, a casual brewery and distillery with elevated comfort food like truffled French fries and crab tater tots. The dough for the artisan pizzas is crafted with Jolly Pumpkin’s own beer (13512 PENINSULA DR., TRAVERSE CITY, 231.223.4333, JOLLYPUMPKIN.COM). Art and great food create a masterpiece of an experience at Old Mission Tavern Bella Galleria 17015 CENTER RD., TRAVERSE CITY,

Shopping Districts Downtown: The stroll-able three-block stretch between

Boardman and Union Streets is packed with dozens of boutiques, cafes and restaurants. Lots of clothing and home accessories shops, independent bookstores, boutiques for babies, a toy store, gourmet food purveyors, souvenirs and more. Best of all? Many of the retailers showcase locally made goods, making it easy to shop Michiganmade. Don’t forget to wander down the side streets and alleys to find off-the-beaten-path shops. 231.922.2050, DOWNTOWNTC.COM.

Old Town: On Union Street a few blocks south of Front Street is TC’s Old Town district, where, despite being so close to downtown, the vibe is decidedly more laid-back. Businesses here include galleries, boutiques, home goods stores, salons, bars, a brewery, Maxbauer’s (a much loved neighborhood butcher shop and grocery), and a handful of casual restaurants including the Blue Heron Cafe featuring sandwiches on fresh baked bread. 231.922.2050, DOWNTOWNTC.COM. Mercato: An expansive indoor marketplace on the garden level of

Grand Traverse Resort: This destination east of Traverse

Grand Traverse Commons’ historic Building 50 (please see page 7). The arched corridors, exposed brick alcoves, art-lined hallways and fine boutiques make for an Old World Euro feel. City is pure Up North: shopping, dining, golf, a world-class spa. The resort’s Tower Gallery of Shops, open to the public, is a cool collection of boutiques ranging from a toy store to gourmet foods boutique to a pro shop. Two of our favorites: Dylan’s Candy Bar and Candy Cafe, with gumball-topped tables and candy cane bar stools, and Mud Pie, a shop with hip clothing and accessories, gifts, items for baby, and beachy gear for summertime. 100 GRAND TRAVERSE RESORT

Warehouse District: Hidden on Garland and Hall Streets— close to Traverse City’s busy Front Street and Grandview Parkway— this is one of the city’s newest hot spots, buzzing with an industrial urban vibe. Find home and clothing boutiques, a music/art gallery venue, a brewery, a hip cafe and even a build-your-own-terrarium shop. 231.922.2050,DOWNTOWNTC.COM.

BEACHES ON LAKE MICHIGAN Bryant Park: On West Grand Traverse Bay just east of

downtown, this enormous beach offers a playground, picnic tables, charcoal grills, shade trees and squeaky-clean restrooms. At the base of Old Mission Peninsula where Garfield Avenue meets Peninsula Drive.

Clinch Park: Just steps from downtown, TC’s most popular beach offers 1,500 sandy feet of frontage on West Grand Traverse Bay. Picnic tables, lifeguards and big shade trees for when you need a break from the heat. Major renovations last year included sparkling new restrooms and a splash pad for little ones. Get there safely from downtown via the pedestrian tunnel at the foot of Cass Street.

East Bay Park: The shore here is very shallow, making it ideal for young families (and anyone wishing to park their lawn chair right in the water). Lifeguards, restrooms, playground, shaded picnic area. Located at the foot of East Front Street, where it meets East Grand Traverse Bay.

Acme Shoreline Park: The beach at Bayside Park—one section of what will eventually be the mile-long Shoreline Park—is open to the public, with picnic tables, basketball and shuffleboard courts, and public restrooms. (Read more about the project at gtrlc.org). Enter the park just south of the intersection of US31 North and M72.

Lighthouse Park: Head 22 miles to the tip of Old Mission Peninsula (on M37) and beach it in the shadows of the 145-year-old Mission Point Lighthouse. Stay for the sunset. peninsulatownship.com/parks.html.

Haserot Park & Boat Launch: Twelve miles out beautiful Peninsula Drive, the beach on Old Mission Harbor has a swim area, playground, basketball, bathrooms. PENINSULATOWNSHIP. COM/PARKS.HTML.

BEACHES ON INLAND LAKES Taylor Park: The sandy swimming area here is bordered by shady woods, making the spot feel sheltered and peaceful. Amenities include a volleyball court, dock and picnic area; Long Lake Grocery is just across the street for snacks and picnic fare. Located on North Long Lake Road, 10 minutes west of downtown TC.

Arbutus Lake No. 5 Park: About 10 miles southeast of Traverse City, this is a renowned fishing spot—but being just 44 feet at its deepest point, it’s also one heck of a swimming hole, with warm, shallow waters. The public beach is at the sprawling lake’s north end. Bonus: The little brook that empties into the lake will fascinate little kids for hours. Off East Arbutus Lake Road.

Interlochen State Park: Two hundred acres tucked between Green and Duck Lakes. Swim, fish, camp and take in a concert at the adjacent Interlochen Center for the Arts. 4167 M137,MICHIGANDNR.COM.

CHARTER FISHING ON GRAND TRAVERSE BAY

With nearly 300 square miles, a depth of 600 feet, and an abundance of lake trout, brown trout, steelhead and salmon, the bay offers all the perks of fishing Lake Michigan with some buffer from the elements. Here’s what you need to know. On charters, bait and tackle are usually provided; a typical half-day trip costs about $500 (UP TO SIX PEOPLE TYPICALLY) and runs about five hours; and anyone 17 and over who plans to fish will need a valid Michigan fishing license (DAY LICENSES RUN ABOUT $10).

Biking TC has long been home to a thriving bike culture, with loads of trails and paths for all types—whether your preferred two-wheeler is a mountain bike, road bike or laid-back cruiser. Find rentals in town at McLain Cycle and Fitness (MCLAINCYCLE.COM), Brick Wheels (BRICKWHEELS.COM) and The River THERIVERTRAVERSECITY.COM. TART TRAIL: This 10.5-mile paved trail connects Acme on

DAVID WEIDNER

the northeast side of Traverse City with the east end of the Leelanau Trail—which whisks bike riders into the Leelanau Peninsula town of Suttons Bay. The TART travels past parks, shopping districts, restaurants and serves up occasional glimpses of Lake Michigan shoreline. More at TRAVERSETRAILS.ORG.

TRAVERSE CITY

VASA PATHWAY: Come summer, Michigan’s premier

cross-country ski trail becomes a pleasant hiking and mountain biking path. A series of loops (5K, 10K, 20K) threading through Pere Marquette State Forest offers a challenging mix of terrain and top-notch scenery. Trailhead: 4450 BARTLETT RD., ACME, TRAVERSETRAILS.ORG.

BOARDMAN LAKE TRAIL: This short, easy out-and-

back skirts the east side of Boardman Lake. The paved path runs just two miles; we suggest circling back and ending the trip with smoothies at nearby Oryana Food Co-Op, accessible via a bike-friendly bridge across the Boardman River. Find parking off Hannah Road, south of the Traverse Area District Library, TRAVERSETRAILS.ORG.

GRAND TRAVERSE COMMONS:

The rolling grounds of this beautiful and historic campus (please see page 7) serve as TC’s unofficial “Central Park,” with miles of meandering hiking trails, plus sweeping views of Grand Traverse Bay and the stunning Victorian-Italianate spires of the Commons’ historic buildings. 830 COTTAGEVIEW DR., TRAVERSE CITY, THEVILLAGETC.COM.

GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY NATURAL EDUCATION RESERVE: A 505-acre gem with nearly seven miles of trails winding along the Boardman River, past rapids, marshes, swamps, forests and an active beaver pond. Great place to bring kiddos for an easy nature walk; don’t miss the interpretive gallery exhibits at the Boardman River Nature Center (open Tuesday through Friday, some Saturdays), at the north end of the reserve. 1450 CASS RD., TRAVERSE CITY, NATUREISCALLING.ORG.

SAND LAKES QUIET AREA: This secluded section of the Pere Marquette State Forest delivers on the peacefulness its name suggests. Eleven miles of easy-to-moderate hiking trails wind through nearly 3,000 wooded acres, home to five geologically rare marl lakes (two of which are stocked with rainbow and brook trout); a beautiful spot for bird- and wildlife-watching. Ten miles east of Traverse City, off Broomhead Road. 231.922.5280. MyNorth 2015 Vacation! 21

Saved nearly a decade ago from an uncertain future, the 1916-built single-screen theater now gleams as a volunteer-run, state-of-theart cinema boasting an unmatched lineup of art-house and foreign films, and even 25-cent classic and children’s matinees. Recently, the State saved another historic TC landmark— the WPA-era Con Foster building in Clinch Park—and renovated it into a jewel-box-sized, first-run movie theater: the 170-seat Bijou by the Bay, 181 E.
