The Traverse City area is blessed with miles of Lake Michigan coastline, one of the planet’s most pristine freshwater bays, deep green inland lakes, the Boardman River (a blue ribbon trout stream) and the Old Mission Peninsula, which rolls out in a patchwork of orchards and vineyards. Enough assets to satisfy any populace? Not the over-achieving folks who live here. In Traverse City, all of that natural beauty has inspired residents to create a great American small town to match it. Traverse City offers restaurants that command national attention; one of the largest historic renovation projects in the country; the nationally renowned Traverse City Film Festival, and a vibrant music and art scene (look for art banners hanging from the exterior walls of buildings!). Kick back in Traverse City for your next vacation. Spend the day boating, beaching, fishing and hiking—then come to town to enjoy all the amenities of this great American city. —The editors of MyNorth.com and Traverse, Northern Michigan’s Magazine.

VILLAGE AT GRAND TRAVERSE COMMONS You can’t miss the red spires and yellow brick towers of the Village at Grand Traverse Commons poking up over the treetops like an enchanted kingdom. The stunning 19th-century Victorian Italianate-style buildings on this 63-acre campus are a part of the largest historical and adaptive reuse project in the country. The Commons, as locals know it, began its life as a state hospital. Now it bustles with residences, shops, restaurants and even a winery. In the complex’s sprawling main building, Building 50, explore the Mercato, an expansive indoor marketplace on the garden level with its arched corridors, exposed brick alcoves, art-lined hallways and fine boutiques that sell jewelry, furs, fine art, local wine, Michigan-made products and more. Kirkbride Hall is another Commons jewel. Built in 1885 as the campus chapel, it has been meticulously renovated into an event venue. The rolling grounds of this beautiful and historic campus serve as TC’s unofficial “Central Park,” with miles of meandering hiking trails, plus sweeping views of Grand Traverse Bay. 830 Cottageview Dr., Traverse City, thevillagetc.com.
DON’T MISS The Traverse Colantha Walker Dairy Festival, June 12. This free family festival celebrates one astronomically prolific milk cow that provided milk for the state hospital before it was the Village at Grand Traverse Commons. Enjoy a pancake breakfast, live music, farmers market, arts & crafts fair, a parade, a Grilled Cheese Grill Off and more! thevillagetc.com/traverse-colantha-walker-dairy-festival.

listen INTERLOCHEN CENTER FOR THE ARTS
TAYLOR BROWN
The 1,200 wooded acres tucked between lovely Green and Duck Lakes, where Interlochen Center for the Arts is set, make this music, art and culture camp, private high school and performance venue feel like one of the Northwoods’ best-kept secrets. Don’t be fooled by the secluded setting 15 miles from Traverse City. Talented children and teens come from all corners of the world to attend camp and high school here, and the center’s long list of distinguished alumni includes pop music stars Norah Jones, Josh Groban and Grammy-winning soprano Jessye Norman. Purchase tickets for a performance in the summer-long Interlochen Arts Festival, which brings in big-name entertainers (Willie Nelson, Sheryl Crowe, Darius Rucker to name a few) and you’ll take a seat in the 3,900-seat covered outdoor Kresge Auditorium with Green Lake winking off stage left and right. In addition to
festival acts, there is a never-ending roster of performances in smaller venues across the campus: 952-seat indoor Corson Auditorium for dance and music; 200-seat Dendrinos Chapel for intimate recitals; state-of-the-art Harvey Theatre for dramatic performances; the Writing House for readings by authors and poets; and the Elizabethan-inspired Upton-Morley outdoor pavilion, with open seating and lawn space for taking in Interlochen’s annual Shakespeare Festival performances. Student recitals are also popular—Interlochen’s annual “Collage” performance is one not to miss; the signature event is an exhilarating sampler of student performances in all mediums. Find a full events schedule and ticket information online. 4000 M137, Interlochen, 231.276.7800, interlochen.org.

CONCERTS The cherished downtown City Opera House has been a cornerstone of culture in the region since the late 1800s, hosting everything from gala balls to rock concerts. Meticulously renovated, the Victorian flourishes of this gilded lady—fresco paintings, gold-leaf accents, a dramatic barrel vault ceiling—shine, thanks to a community-wide restoration effort. The 700-seat City Opera House also boasts state-of-the-art acoustics. National acts play year round. Schedule online. 106 E. Front St., Traverse City, 231.941.8082, cityoperahouse.org.

The concert and performance lineup at the Dennos Museum Center’s intimate, acoustically superior 350seat venue, Milliken Auditorium, are as culturally and internationally diverse as the art exhibits in the neighboring galleries. Each year the Dennos Concert Series presents theater, dance and music from around the world, including world music, jazz, soul, folk and the blues. 1701 E. Front St., Traverse City, 231.995.1553, dennosmuseum.org. Purchase tickets at MyNorthTickets.com. The emerging artists featured at the 200-seat InsideOut Gallery in the Warehouse District venue often fly under the radar, so stay tuned to the schedule, and you’ll be treated to some of the nation’s best up-andcoming acts in jazz, folk, blues, Americana and world music, as well as loved local acts. Make sure to order a cocktail from the bar and browse the Outsider Art in the gallery pre- or post-performance. 229 Garland St., Traverse City, 231.929.3254, insideoutarttc.com. A lineup of national and international performers plays all over the 1,200-acre Interlochen Center for the Arts campus, from the open-sided Kresge Auditorium to 900-seat Corson and many smaller venues. The secluded Sand Lakes Quiet Area in the Pere Marquette State Forest delivers on the peacefulness its name suggests. Eleven miles of easy-to-moderate hiking trails wind through nearly 3,000 wooded acres, home to five geologically rare marl lakes (two of which are stocked with rainbow and brook trout). Ten miles east of Traverse City, off Broomhead Road, 231.922.5280. The Grand Traverse County Natural Education Reserve is a 505-acre gem with nearly seven miles of trails winding along the Boardman River, past rapids, marshes, swamps, forests and an active beaver pond. Set on 480 acres, the in-town trails of Grand Traverse Commons feel like a backcountry getaway—one that can end with a cold drink at any number of fabulous watering holes or eateries in the Village at Grand Traverse Commons. Get up close and personal with Traverse City by biking the 10.5-mile paved Tart Trail that connects Acme on the northeast side of Traverse City with the south end of the Leelanau Trail—which whisks bike riders into the Leelanau Peninsula town of Suttons Bay. Where moments become lifetime memories
ANGELA BROWN; TAYLOR BROWN
When the snow melts, the Vasa Pathway, one of Michigan’s premier cross-country ski trails, turns into a stellar hiking and mountain biking path. A series of loops (5K, 10K, 20K) threading through Pere Marquette State Forest offers a challenging mix of terrain and top-notch scenery. Trailhead: 4450 Bartlett Rd., Acme, traversetrails.org. Perfect for families, the two-mile out-and-back Boardman Lake Trail skirts the east side of Boardman Lake. We suggest circling back and ending the trip with smoothies at nearby Oryana Food Co-Op, accessible via a bike-friendly bridge across the Boardman River. Find parking off Hannah Road, south of the Traverse Area District Library, traversetrails.org. Need to rent your wheels? McLain Cycle and Fitness (mclaincycle.com) and Brick Wheels (brickwheels.com) will have you pedaling in no time.

GOLF BAY MEADOWS: The best choice for beginners and casual golfers, the family-owned Bay Meadows offers two nine-hole courses—one, an exclusively par-3 course; the other, a slightly longer executive course that has a few par 4’s and 5’s thrown in. Also a driving range, practice putting greens and private instruction. 5220 Barney Rd., Traverse City, 231.946.7927, baymeadowsfgc.com.

GRAND TRAVERSE RESORT: Three signature courses, all designed by some of the game’s biggest legends, cover the rolling terrain surrounding Grand Traverse Resort. The courses have all scored accolades by Golf Magazine and Golf Digest, and the Jack Nicklaus–designed course, The Bear, hosted Michigan’s best players in the Michigan Open for decades. 100 Grand Traverse Resort Village Blvd., Williamsburg, 231.534.6000, grandtraverseresort.com. ELMBROOK: A full USGA, par-72, 18-hole course that has the distinction of being one of the region’s oldest—and most beautiful—public courses. The high, rolling hills afford some breathtaking views of Grand Traverse Bay; the clubhouse’s big covered deck is the place to kick back at the end of a round. 1750 Townline Rd., Traverse City, 231.946.9180, elmbrookgolf.com.
LOCHENHEATH: This celebrated and challenging Scottish links-style course, set on a scenic bluff that was once home to a cherry orchard, is private but welcomes limited outside play. 7951 Turnberry Cir., Williamsburg, 231.938.9800, lochenheath.com. CROWN GOLF CLUB: For serious golfers, this 18-hole championship layout course, located just 10 minutes from downtown Traverse City, is packed with challenging shots and beautiful views. Try the front nine if you’re still in early-season form; low handicappers can contend with hills, hazards and dog legs on the back. Finish up with dinner at the laid-back Mulligan’s Pub and Grill, located on site. Watch for shoulder-season discounts late spring and early fall, 2430 E. Crown Dr., 231.946.2975, golfthecrown.com. INTERLOCHEN GOLF CLUB: This scenic, playable 18-hole course is an Interlochen gem. Velvety greens, lush fairways, mature woods and a meandering tributary of the Betsie River all offer plenty of serenity. Other perks include a practice green, driving range, pro-shop and clubhouse with full dining room. Voted one of the 100 best golf values in America, 10586 US31, Interlochen, 231.275.7311, interlochengolf.com.

ARTS, BOOKS, FILM, THEATER The independent BlackBird Arts offers inspiration and instruction in clay, paint, silversmithing and much more for people of all ages. 1485 Barlow St., Traverse City, 231.421.8085, blackbirdartstc.com. Summer workshops at the Crooked Tree Arts Center include instruction in pastels, photography and even fabric marbling. Don’t miss the June 11 paint-out, where artists gather to paint in and around Traverse City and return to the center to sell their canvasses at the end of the day, or the July 30, Outdoor Art Fair at Northwestern Michigan College. 322 Sixth St., Traverse City, 231.941.9488, crookedtree.org. The region’s premier art museum Dennos Museum Center is just steps from downtown Traverse City, yet tucked away on the oasis-like campus of Northwestern Michigan College. All year long, Dennos maintains a dynamic array of exhibitions, including three galleries that showcase national and regional exhibits. Its permanent collections include the nation’s largest and most complete collection of Inuit art, plus the hands-on Discovery Gallery, which will enchant young children. Look for more expansion at the Dennos this summer. Call or visit online for ticket information and a schedule of upcoming exhibits and events. 1701 E. Front St., TC, 231.995.1055, dennosmuseum.org. Nationally acclaimed authors engage in great conversation at the National Writers Series. Events are held at the City Opera House in downtown Traverse City. Information and tickets: nationalwritersseries.org. The handsome state-of-the-art Traverse Area District Library with its beautiful Boardman Lake setting is a hub of community events. tadl.org. 610 Woodmere Ave., 231.932.8500; East Bay Branch 1989 Three Mile Rd., 231.922.2085, tadl.org. One of the crown jewels of Traverse City’s cultural scene, the State Theatre is also one of the region’s best historic preservation stories. Saved nearly a decade ago from an uncertain future, the 1916-built single-screen theater now gleams as a volunteer-run, state-of-the-art cinema boasting a stout lineup of art-house and foreign films, and even 25-cent classic and children’s matinees. Drive down Grandview Parkway and you can’t miss the twinkle lights of the Bijou By the Bay. This 170-seat jewel-box sized theater on the water in Clinch Park shows first-run movies. 181 E. Grandview Pkwy., 231.947.4800, statetheatretc.com. The Interlochen Center for the Arts is famous for its musical entertainment, but its students (both at the academy and camp) put on plays worthy of big city theater districts. Find out what’s playing: tickets.interlochen.org. Community theater is alive and talented at the Old Town Playhouse at the corner of Eighth and Cass Streets in Traverse City. Look for The Kitchen Witches from May 27-June 5. Find days, times and tickets at MyNorthTickets.com. Traverse City’s new Carmike Cherry Blossom 14 Cineplex boasts 3D and jumbo digital screens. Go ahead and order up a beer (or glass of wine) and take it to your seat. 3825 Marketplace Circle, Traverse City. 231.668.7395, imax.com/theatres/carmike-cherry-blossom-14-imax. With its collection of historic musical instruments from the late 1800s through the 1950s, the Music House Museum demonstrates the history of automated music. Their special events (e.g., silent movies with live Wurlitzer organ accompaniment) are especially fun! 7377 US31, Williamsburg, 231.938.9300, musichouse.org. 42 MyNorth.com

SHOPPING DISTRICTS
Browsing the three-block stretch between Boardman and Union Streets in downtown Traverse City isn’t the wearying, shop-tillyou-drop variety. It is anything but, packed as it is with dozens of boutiques, gourmet food purveyors, indie bookstores, cafes, restaurants—not to mention gemlike peeks of Grand Traverse Bay and pretty foot bridges along the Boardman River. Don’t forget to wander down the side streets and alleys to find off-the-beatenpath shops. 231.922.2050, downtowntc.com. Step away from the downtown crowds to explore Traverse City’s Old Town, on Union Street a few blocks south of Front Street. Businesses here include galleries, boutiques, home goods stores, salons, bars, a brewery, Maxbauer’s (a much loved neighborhood butcher shop and grocery), and a handful of casual restaurants. 231.922.2050, downtowntc.com. Watching the metamorphosis of the industrial-hip Warehouse District has been a favorite Traverse City pastime. Tucked into Garland and Hall Streets—close to Traverse City’s busy Front Street and Grandview Parkway—this is one of the city’s newest hot spots, buzzing with an industrial urban vibe. Find home and clothing boutiques, a music/art gallery venue, a brewery, a hip café, a build-your-own-terrarium shop and a bean-to-bar chocolate factory and cafe. And new this summer—the handsome Hotel Indigo, located across from the shore at Grandview Parkway and Hall Streets, opens its doors. 231.922.2050, downtowntc.com. Out on downtown’s West End, find an enclave of gourmet food shops guaranteed to get you stocking that picnic basket for an evening on the beach. The lineup includes a cheese shop, two specialty groceries stocked with fabulous food finds and fine wines, a gourmet kitchen supply shop and even a doggie bakery. 231.922.2050, downtowntc.
