. R E E B F O S D N I K T N E R E F DIF What makes Bagger Dave’s beef burgers so deliciously different? First of all, they’re made fresh, not frozen. And each is made with our Prime Rib Recipe. Yes, that’s prime rib. There’s only one way to make it better. Order our Fresh-Cut Potato Fries or Dave’s Sweet Potato Chips on the side. They’re glutenfree, trans-fat free, and allergen free. OK, there’s another way to make it better. Wash it down with one of our craft beers.

We also make an audacious turkey burger if you’re not into the beef thing. It’s 15% leaner than beef. Gobble one up when you get the chance.

There’s no shortage of summertime goodness to be had in Traverse City: pristine beaches on one of the biggest, cleanest freshwater bays on Earth, festivals all summer long, a booming wine and craft-brew scene, arts and music and boutique shopping, and a foodie culture that continues to turn heads across the nation. What makes this bustling waterfront city so endearing, though, is that it still maintains its warm, welcoming, small-town Up North charm. It’s the best of both worlds—and the perfect place for an escape. Enjoy your time in Traverse City! —The editors of MyNorth.com and Traverse, Northern Michigan’s Magazine.

Festivals

4National Cherry Festival, July 5–12

The area’s flagship summer festival draws more than a half-million people to the downtown Traverse City waterfront every year to celebrate the region’s favorite fruit (Michigan, and specifically this area, grows nearly 75 percent of the nation’s tart cherries). Fittingly, annual highlights include cherry-pie-eating and pit-spitting contests—but there’s also a giant county-fair-style midway, a parade nearly every day, a Cherry Queen pageant, car shows, beer tent, musical main-stage, fireworks, and much, much more. This year marks the festival’s 88th anniversary; opening weekend will be headlined by the U.S. Navy Blue Angels air show, 231.947.4230, CHERRYFESTIVAL.ORG.

Horse Shows by the Bay Equestrian Festival, July Experience the thrill of a real-deal equestrian competition just minutes from downtown Traverse City. Thousands of the nation’s best horses and riders show their stuff in show-jumping and dressage events. Festivities start July 2 at Flintfields Horse Park and run intermittently throughout the month, HORSESHOWSBYTHEBAY.COM.

Traverse City Film Festival, July 29–August 3 Every year the TCFF brings the very best independent, foreign and documentary films to a handful of downtown venues and viewing spaces (including our favorite: a giant inflatable outdoor screen at the waterfront Open Space park); we also suggest checking out the workshops and panel discussions with directors, actors and screenwriters. Ticket information and event schedule online. 231.392.1134, TRAVERSECITYFILMFEST.ORG.

JORDAN OSTER, MILES CRONK, KATY JO DESANTIS

Friday Night Live, Friday evenings in August Downtown TC turns into one big block party during this beloved summer tradition. Live music, street food, face-painting, dance performances, and other family-friendly fun. From 5:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., August 1 through 22. DOWNTOWNTC.COM

Microbrew & Music Festival This annual event, now held twice a year (February and August), is a great way to check out what the Mitten’s best brewers have been up to. Sample a curated selection of 150-some craft beverages and custom brews from more than 30 Michigan brewers, chow on local food from regional restaurants and vendors, and catch live music. Dates and schedule at MICROBREWANDMUSIC.COM.

Schooner Fest 2014, September 14-22 White sails on the blue bay usher the Schooner Fest to the Traverse City waterfront. Highlights include the seven-vessel Parade of Tall Ships on September

19. Festival-goers will be treated to deck tours, cruises and more on the ships as they are moored at Clinch Park and the Discovery Center Great Lakes dock. MARITIMEHERITAGEALLIANCE.ORG.

Acme Fall Festival Pancake breakfast, craft show and demonstrations, antique and classic cars, trucks and tractors, pie contests and much more. Last Saturday in September. Flintfields Horse Park, Bates Rd., Williamsburg. DISCOVERACME.COM.

Winter Comedy Arts Festival, February 2015 Find tons more Events at MyNorth.com > Events

Renowned comedians descend upon Traverse City in the depths of winter each year for this festival, which also offers a host of free activities right on Front Street, including a Ferris wheel, ice skating, sledding and even frozen mini golf (the obstacles are ice carvings). Summer Staples Farmers Markets: Traverse City’s emergent food culture isn’t just a passing trend; it’s firmly rooted in the region’s rich agricultural tradition, which grows more exciting each year as farmers and food artisans with great ideas put their stamp on the scene. Check out the bounty at the city’s two weekly markets: the Sara Hardy Downtown Farmers Market (Wednesdays and Saturdays at Cass St. and Grandview Parkway; DOWNTOWNTC.COM) and the Village Outdoor Farmers Market (Mondays at Grand Traverse Commons; THEVILLAGETC.COM).

Rogers Observatory: Northwestern Michigan College’s J. H. Rogers Observatory is the area’s best spot for guided stargazing. Twice-monthly public viewing nights run just $2 for individuals and $5 for families, 1753 BIRMLEY RD., TC, 231.946.1787, NMC.EDU. Ranch Rudolf: The Boardman River meanders through a thickly forested valley, serving up quietude and wildlife just a short jaunt from Traverse City. The river runs clear and cold and, in some places, is fairly swift—but it’s kind to paddlers of all skill levels. Rent canoes, kayaks or tubes at Ranch Rudolf, 6841 BROWN BRIDGE RD., TC, 231.947.9529, RANCHRUDOLF.COM.

CARLY PASZEK

State Theatre: One of the crown jewels of Traverse City’s cultural scene, the State Theatre (233 E. FRONT ST.) is also one of the region’s best historic preservation stories. Saved nearly a decade ago from an uncertain, shuttered future, the 1916-built single-screen theater now gleams as a volunteer-run, state-of-the-art cinema boasting an unmatched lineup of art-house and foreign films, and even 25-cent classic and children’s matinees. Last year, in another big win for the region, the State saved another historic TC landmark—the WPA6 MyNorth.com

era Con Foster building in Clinch Park—and renovated it into a jewel-box-sized, first-run movie theater: the 170-seat Bijou by the Bay, 181 E. GRANDVIEW PKWY., 231.947.4800, STATETHEATRETC.ORG.

Traverse City Beach Bums: This Frontier League ball club is a beloved part of Traverse City’s summertime traditions. Reasonable ticket prices, between-inning kids games, giveaways, fireworks, and shenanigans from the team’s mascot bears make this a perfect family-friendly outing. For a sweet date-night, there’s nothing more romantic than taking advantage of the park’s laid-back outfield lawn seating. Simply bring your own blanket and a jacket for the late innings, and make it your own field of dreams, Wuerfel Park, 333 STADIUM DR., TC 231.943.0100, TRAVERSECITYBEACHBUMS.COM.

U-Pick: In one of the world’s prime fruit-growing regions, spending a few hours in a U-pick berry patch or orchard is simply a summertime must. Look for strawberries in June, cherries, blueberries and raspberries in August, peaches in late summer, apples in fall. Visit LOCALDIFFERENCE.ORG for a searchable directory of the area’s U-picks.

Ice Cream: It’s not truly summer unless there’s ice cream involved. TC is anchored on either end of town by two vintage-cute walkup ice cream stands: Bardon’s Wonder Freeze to the east (1100 E FRONT ST., TC, 231.941.4326) and Dairy Lodge to the west (405 N. DIVISION ST., TC, 231.941.4374). Downtown, across from the State Theatre, find Cherry Cone (240 E FRONT ST., TC, 231.944.1036). For a destination ice cream experience, take a drive to Moomers, a dairy farm and creamery voted America’s best ice cream by viewers of Good Morning America. A whopping 120 flavors await. 7263 N. LONG LAKE RD., TC, 231.941.4122, MOOMERS.COM.

City Opera House: This cherished downtown Victorian opera house has been a cornerstone of culture in the region since the late 1800s, hosting everything from gala balls to rock concerts. After a meticulous renovation and preservation campaign, the 700-seat venue is now a marriage of historic details—fresco paintings, gold-leaf accents, a dramatic barrel vault ceiling—and state-of-the-art acoustics. In short, it’s a spectacular space to catch a show. Diverse national touring acts include live comedy, readings by acclaimed authors, music, dance, theater, family productions and more. InsideOut Gallery: The emerging artists featured at this 200-seat Warehouse District venue often fly just under the radar, so stay tuned to the schedule, and you’ll be treated to some of the nation’s best up-and-coming acts in jazz, folk, blues, Americana and world music. Featuring a collection of gritty pop art, this is also the place to catch exhibits, local acts and curated flicks as part of the free “Brew and View” series every Tuesday.

Beaches

4

Clinch Park: Just steps from downtown, TC’s most popular beach offers 1,500 sandy feet of frontage on West Grand Traverse Bay. It’s a sublime spot for sunbathing and swimming, with picnic tables, lifeguards and big shade trees for when you need a break from the heat. Major renovations last year included sparkling new restrooms and a splash pad for little ones. Get there safely from downtown via the pedestrian tunnel at the foot of Cass Street. Taylor Park: The sandy swimming area

here is bordered by shady woods, making the spot feel sheltered and peaceful. Amenities include a volleyball court, dock and picnic area; Long Lake Grocery is just across the street for snacks and picnic fare. Located on North Long Lake Road, 10 minutes west of downtown TC.

KAITLYN BUSSELL

East Bay Park: The shore here is very

shallow, making it ideal for young families (and anyone wishing to park their lawn chair right in the water). Lifeguards, restrooms, playground, shaded picnic area. Located at the foot of East Front Street, where it meets East Grand Traverse Bay.

Acme Shoreline Park: You might

call this gorgeous beach on East Grand

Traverse Bay an “undevelopment” project. The spot was formerly a string of privately owned parcels, home to motels and restaurants, but Acme Township and Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy teamed to envision the invaluable beachfront as something that everyone should be able to enjoy. Now, the beach at Bayside Park—one section of what will eventually be the mile-long Shoreline Park—is open to the public, with picnic tables, basketball and shuffleboard courts, and public restrooms. (Read more about the project at gtrlc.org). Enter the park just south of the intersection of US31 North and M72.

Arbutus Lake No. 5 Park: Arbutus

Lake, about 10 miles southeast of Traverse City, is a glorious fishing spot—but being just 44 feet at its deepest point, it’s also one heck of a swimming hole, with warm, shallow waters. The public beach at this sprawling lake’s north end is small, but you’ll likely have the place to yourself, and the little brook that empties into the lake will fascinate little kids for hours. Off East Arbutus Lake Road.

Bryant Park: If you’ve got the whole

gang along for a beach day, then head to Bryant Park, on West Grand Traverse Bay

just east of downtown. The enormous beach offers plenty of space to sprawl out, plus there’s a playground, picnic tables, charcoal grills, shade trees and squeaky-clean restrooms. Find Bryant Park at the base of Old Mission Peninsula where Garfield Avenue meets Peninsula Drive.

Interlochen State Park: Two hun-

dred acres tucked between Green and Duck Lakes. Swim, fish, camp and take in a concert at the adjacent Interlochen Center for the Arts. 4167 M-137, MICHIGANDNR.COM. MyNorth 2014 Vacation! 11

On the Water 4

Tall Ship Manitou: This 114-foot replica of an 1800s schooner seems to have sailed straight out of a Great Lakes history book. A ride aboard the tall ship is a thrill for all ages; choose from three daily tours (noon, afternoon and the popular evening cruise), each two hours long. 13258 SW BAY SHORE DR., TC, 231.941.2000, TALLSHIPSAILING.COM.

Nauti-Cat: A sunset sail around Grand Traverse Bay aboard this catamaran is a dreamy way to cap off a summer day. The boat departs on four cruises daily; or, throw a party and rent the whole boat for you and up to 45 of your closest buds. Cash bar and bathroom on board. 615 E. FRONT ST.,

of a parasail, which lifts you high over the waves of Grand Traverse Bay, you’ll get what’s quite possibly the best view to be had in all of Traverse City. That, plus the bragging rights that you survived dangling up to 500 vertical feet over the water. Try East Bay Parasail (1401 US31, TC, EASTBAYPARASAIL. COM) or Traverse Bay Parasail (1773 US31, TC, TBPARASAIL.COM) for solo and tandem flights.

Sailing: Raise the sails and let the wind

Powerboat: If you love speed and don’t

love the feeling of gliding over glassy H2O, put paddleboarding—the area’s emerging new favorite watersport—at the top of your summer bucket list. Or, kick it old-school in a canoe or kayak. Whatever your paddling pleasure, we suggest getting out on the bay early in the morning, when the water is calmest and there’s no boat traffic to contend with. Find rentals at The River, Clinch Park, TC, 231.883.7890, THERIVERTRAVERSECITY.COM.

Parasailing: Here’s the reason to finally

want to miss an inch of Grand Traverse Bay’s 300 square miles, a powerboat is a must. Sail & Power Boat Rental has ski boats, pontoons and jet skis—plus kneeboarding, tubing and waterski paraphernalia. CHARTER FISHING ON GRAND TRAVERSE BAY There are few thrills like fishing on the open water of the Great Lakes. But high winds and rough waters can quickly ruin the fishing trip you’ve been waiting for all year. The solution? A charter fishing trip on the protected waters of Grand Traverse Bay. With nearly 300 square miles, a More lakes, beaches and watersports MyNorth.com > Outdoors

depth of 600 feet, and an abundance of lake trout, brown trout, steelhead, and salmon, the bay offers all the perks of fishing Lake Michigan with some buffer from the elements. Here’s what you need to know: Bait and tackle are usually provided; a typical half-day trip runs about four hours; and anyone 17 and over who plans to fish will need a valid Michigan fishing license (day licenses run about $10). Three charter companies to try: Big Kahuna (bigkahunacharter.com), Daydreamer (fishdaydreamer. com), and Reel Fun (reelfunfishingcharters.com). MyNorth 2014 Vacation! 13

Bike Routes

TC has long been home to a thriving bike culture, with loads of trails and paths for all types— whether your preferred two-wheeler is a mountain bike, road bike or laid-back cruiser. Find rentals in town at McLain Cycle and Fitness (mclaincycle.com), Brick Wheels (brickwheels.com) and The River (therivertraversecity.com).

Vasa Pathway: Come summer, Michigan’s premier cross-country ski trail becomes the region’s best mountain biking path. A series of loops (5K, 10K, 20K) threading through Pere Marquette State Forest offers a challenging mix of terrain and top-notch scenery. Trailhead: 4450 BARTLETT RD., ACME, TRAVERSETRAILS.ORG.

Old Mission Peninsula: Old Mission’s undulating terrain makes it both a visual delight (picture: orchards, vineyards, sweeping water views) and a wonderful challenge for experienced road cyclists. For a beautiful half-day ride, park at East Bay Park and cruise up the peninsula’s west shoreline, then down along the east shoreline, avoiding the steep inclines (and heavier car traffic) of M37 up the spine.

4

Boardman Lake Trail: This short, easy out-and-back skirts the east side of Boardman Lake through thick woods that dapple the path with filtered sunlight. The path is just two miles; we suggest circling back and ending the trip with smoothies at nearby Oryana Food Co-Op, accessible via a bike-friendly bridge across the Boardman River. Find parking off Hannah Road, south of the Traverse Area District Library, TRAVERSETRAILS.ORG.

More trails? MyNorth.com > Outdoors

HIKING TRAILS Sand Lakes Quiet Area: This secluded section of the Pere Marquette State Forest delivers on the peacefulness its name suggests. Eleven miles of easy-to-moderate hiking trails wind through nearly 3,000 wooded acres, home to five geologically rare marl lakes (two of which are stocked with rainbow and brook trout); a beautiful spot for bird- and wildlife-watching. Ten miles east of Traverse City, off Broomhead Road, 231.922.5280.

Grand Traverse County Natural Education Reserve: A 505-acre gem with nearly seven miles of trails winding along the Boardman River, past rapids, marshes, swamps, forests and an active beaver pond. Great place to bring kiddos for an easy nature walk; don’t miss the interpretive gallery exhibits at the Boardman River Nature Center (open Tuesday through Friday, some Saturdays), at the north end of the reserve. 1450 CASS RD., TC, NATUREISCALLING.ORG.

Old Mission State Park: At the tip of Old Mission Peninsula lies this park, home to the 144-year-old Mission Point Lighthouse. Walk the cobbled beach way out to where the land meets the water, or take an easy stroll along the paths surrounding the lighthouse. For longer hikes, explore the extended trails through the acres of woods and abandoned orchards that surround the park. Located at the northern terminus of M37.

KAITLYN BUSSELL

Grand Traverse Commons: This 430-acre, in-town oasis was once the campus for the Northern Michigan Asylum, a 19th-century state mental hospital that closed in 1989. Now, the rolling grounds here serve as TC’s unofficial “Central Park,” with miles of meandering hiking trails, plus sweeping views of Grand Traverse Bay and the stunning Victorian-Italianate spires of the Commons’ historic buildings. 830 COTTAGEVIEW DR., TC, TRAIL MAPS AT THEVILLAGETC.COM.

Set on a scenic bluff that was once home to a cherry orchard, this consistently top-rated course can be quite challenging—so beginners and hackers, take note. Activities for Kids

4Great Lakes Children’s Museum: This enchanting kids’ museum mixes entertainment, hands-on activities and education to make the science of the Great Lakes watershed come alive. Kids will love racing boats and making waves at the water table, “becoming” a raindrop in the water cycle exhibit, even captaining a freighter. Other highlights include make-and-take crafts, a cool “living river” exhibit, and the Toddler Beach area, which offers age-appropriate books and toys for kids under age three. Admission $6; children under age two are free. 13240 S. WEST BAYSHORE DR., TC, 231.932.4526, GREATLAKESKIDS.ORG.

Pirate’s Cove: Chances are, your kids were begging to go here as soon as you passed it on US31 on your way into Traverse City. Don’t miss it: With two 18-hole mini golf courses, go-carts, zip-lines, a ropes course, bumper boats and a “water coaster” with a 50-foot drop, it’s a summertime must. 1710 US31, TC, 231.938.9599, PIRATESCOVE.NET/TRAVERSE-CITY.

State Theatre Children’s Matinee: Remember the last time a movie cost a quarter? Neither did we—until the historic State Theatre started the brilliant tradition of offering matinee movies for 25 cents twice a week, inspired by the cost of a single ticket back when the State originally opened in 1916. The Wednesday flicks are always silver screen classics, and the Saturday movies are geared toward kids and young families: Shrek, for example, or The Mighty Ducks. We just love the idea of treating the whole gang to a trip to the movies—on nothing but pocket change. 223 E. FRONT ST., TC, 231.947.4800, SCHEDULE AT STATETHEATRETC.ORG.

Lucky Jack’s: This 12,000-square-foot arcade has more than enough activities to bust through inevitable kid vacation boredom. Laser tag, bumper cars, billiards tables, bowling, plus pizza and pub grub (and craft beers and wine for Mom and Dad). 1705 S GARFIELD AVE., TC, 231.947.2610, LUCKYJACKS.COM.

Incredible Mo’s: Wear ‘em out at this emporium of fun: bowling, laser tag, pizza, arcade and playroom. SILVER LAKE CROSSINGS BLVD.,

Dennos Museum Discovery Gallery: On the long list of reasons to love Traverse City’s top-notch art museum, the Dennos, is this permanent gallery featuring hands-on art and science installations aimed specifically at kids. Highlights include a laser harp, which plays via invisible strings, an interactive sound wall, and the Hubble Space Telescope Theater, featuring ongoing transmissions of programming from NASA. 1701 E. FRONT ST., TC, 231.995.1553, DENNOSMUSEUM.ORG.

Kids Kove: This sprawling outdoor public playground, set on the grounds of the city’s pretty Civic Center, is simply one of the coolest playgrounds we’ve ever seen. Little ones can spend hours exploring the series of wooden towers, pyramids and forts, connected by rope bridges, slides, planks and tunnels. For older kids, there’s a skate park and basketball courts, plus a mile-long walking track for parents to stretch their legs.

Mercato: An expansive indoor marketplace on the garden level of Grand Traverse Commons’ historic Building 50—one of the gorgeous 19th-century structures comprising the former Northern Michigan Asylum. The arched corridors, exposed brick alcoves, art-lined hallways and fine boutiques make for an Old World Euro feel, which was exactly the developer’s intent—as a nod to the building’s architectural heritage as well as his own Italian roots. Find jewelry boutiques, a furrier, fine art galleries, wine tasting room, bike shop, Michigan-made market and much more. 830 COTTAGEVIEW DR., TC, THEVILLAGETC.COM.

West End: Step away from all the foot traffic downtown by heading west on Front Street, over the bridge that spans the Boardman River, to find a little cluster of independent shops. Highlights include a doggie bakery and boutique, a gourmet kitchen supply shop (with cult-worthy made-to-go sandwiches), a chocolatier, a jeweler, and two specialty grocers with local wines and fabulous food finds from around the region. 231.922.2050, DOWNTOWNTC.COM.

The annual performing arts series here is a summer highlight, bringing some of the world’s top musical touring acts in all genres (last season’s headliners included the Avett Brothers, the Steve Miller Band, Josh Groban, and Harry Connick Jr., among others; the 2014 lineup will be posted online in the spring). The main stage is the gor-

geous 3,900-seat covered outdoor Kresge Auditorium on Green Lake, but there are smaller venues, too: 952-seat indoor Corson Auditorium for dance and music; 200-seat Dendrinos Chapel for intimate recitals; state-of-the-art Harvey Theatre for dramatic performances; the Writing House for readings by authors and poets; and the Elizabethan-inspired Upton-Morley outdoor pavilion, with open seating and lawn space for taking in Interlochen’s annual Shakespeare Festival performances.

INTERLOCHEN: A QUICK SKETCH

Founded in 1928 as a summer music camp, Interlochen is now a three-pillared institution, comprised of the arts camp (for grades 3 through 12), the summer music festival, and an independent boarding high school devoted to the fine arts. While much of the public knows it for its fantastic concert

Interlochen is also home to an internationally renowned high-school arts academy and a summer camp. Student recitals are open to the public—and with tickets often under $10, they make for an inexpensive date night. Interlochen’s annual “Collage” performance is one not to miss; the signature event is an exhilarating sampler of student performances in all mediums, showcasing the talents of these rising young stars. series, Interlochen gained acclaim as an educational facility, where students are immersed in subjects like music, creative writing, theater, dance, visual art and filmmaking. After graduation, many go on to become household names—some of Interlochen’s A-list alumni include Norah Jones, Josh Groban and Rufus Wainwright, to name just a few. MyNorth 2014 Vacation! 27

Dennos Museum Center

The region’s premier art museum is just steps from downtown Traverse City, yet tucked away from the busyness of downtown, as it sits among tall pines and a sculpture courtyard on the oasis-like campus of Northwestern Michigan College. All year long, Dennos maintains a dynamic array of exhibitions, including three galleries that showcase national and regional exhibits. Its permanent collections include the nation’s largest and most complete collection of Inuit art, plus the hands-on Discovery Gallery, which will enchant young children. Milliken Auditorium is Dennos’ intimate onsite venue for music, dance, theater and other live entertainment; expect dazzling acoustics and a world-class line-up of touring acts. Old Mission Tour Old Mission Peninsula, a 22-mile-long finger of land that divides East and West Grand Traverse Bays, boasts beachy coastline, rolling hillsides, cherry orchards, wineries, vineyards and breathtaking views. It’s the perfect destination for a meandering daytrip; here are some of our picks for the best Old Mission has to offer. For a map of roads and attractions, visit oldmission.com.

EAT

Among the many Traverse City restaurants leading the wave of hyper-local cuisine, Mission Table is at the front of the pack, with an elegant menu inspired by ingredients sourced from the region’s farms and fisheries. Local wine, spirits and craft brews, too. The bayside setting is sublime; the service, top-notch. (13512 PENINSULA DR., TC, 231.223.4222, MISSIONTABLE.NET). Next door find Jolly Pumpkin, a casual brewery and distillery with elevated comfort food like truffled French fries and crab tater tots. The dough for the artisan pizzas is crafted with Jolly Pumpkin’s own beer (13512 PENINSULA DR., TC, 231.223.4333, JOLLYPUMPKIN.COM). Art and great food create a masterpiece of an experience at Old Mission Tavern Bella Galleria (17015 CENTER RD. TC, 231.223.4142, OLDMISSIONTAVERN.COM.)

34 MyNorth.com

Two great bets for picnic food: Bad Dog Deli for grab-and-go goodies (14091 CENTER RD., TCGRILLS.COM/BAD-DOG-DELI) and Peninsula Market for local produce, wines, sandwiches and even homemade pie (14111 CENTER RD., 231.223.9500, THEPENINSULAMARKET.COM).

SEE

One of our favorite drives Up North is Center Road (M37), which meanders up the spine of the peninsula all the way to where the land tapers off into Grand Traverse Bay. At the northern tip you’ll find Lighthouse Park, home to the 1870built Mission Point Lighthouse, miles of hiking trails and a sprawling, pebbly beach that’s perfect for rock picking and catching a stellar sunset. On the way back, take a detour down Peninsula Drive

along West Bay or East Shore Road on East Bay for yet more gorgeous scenery.

DO

Wine: Old Mission’s rare geography—thin strip of hilly land surrounded by Great Lakes waters—and location on the 45th parallel make it one of the best wine regions in the country. Eight wineries call Old Mission home, making it an ideal destination for a wine tour (see our guide on page 35). Hike: The beautifully maintained trail system at Pelizzari Natural Area winds through a lovely mix of landscapes, including a stand of fragrant mature hemlocks. Watch for bluebirds in the meadow. (6854 CENTER RD.) Swim: The big beach at Old Mission Village’s Haserot Park on East Bay is never busy; with a playscape and shallow water, it’s a great spot to stop with kids. Picnic: Bowers Harbor Park on West Bay is a pretty spot for a breezy lunch; find provisions, plus ice cream, antiques and kooky souvenirs at the historic Old Mission General Store (18250 MISSION RD., 231.223.4310).
