3 Beautiful locations • 72-Holes of Championship golf We are frequently asked, “What is A-Ga-Ming?”. A-Ga-Ming represents many things. To the Native Americans, it is a word meaning “on the shore.” For families across the Midwest and the nation, it is a beautiful vacation destination, complete with lodging, dining, and relaxation. To the golf community, it is a 72-hole golf resort nestled on the shores of Torch Lake and Lake Michigan, in three beautiful Northern Michigan locations. For everyone, it means the perfect destination for group trips, membership & daily-fee-play, dreamlike weddings, celebrations and more!

Opened in 2005 as the third best new course in the country, Sundance exemplifies the extraordinary natural beauty of northwest Michigan with views of both Torch Lake and Lake Michigan. With wide, playable fairways, superbly sculpted greens, vast windswept bunkers, heather-clad mounding and spectacular vistas, Sundance will delight the scratch golfer or a newly fledged beginner. Sundance continues to be one of the premier golf courses in northern Michigan.

The original A-Ga-Ming 18 holes, renamed Torch in 2005 for the famous lake that the course overlooks, continues to be a very scenic and enjoyable round. The Torch is situated majestically on the ridges offering spectacular views of Torch Lake. The Torch is a challenging shot-makers course that favors accuracy over length. Water comes into play on 11 of the holes, as do mature stands of woods throughout the course. The Torch is one of the most scenic golf courses in all of northern Michigan.

Overlooking Lake Michigan, Antrim Dells is back to its splendor as one of finest golf experiences in northern Michigan. Former host of The Michigan Amateur, the course is in the best shape of its life! Built by Hall of Fame architect Jerry Matthews who calls it one of his favorite designs, Antrim Dells now features four sets of tees along with some of the “Sweetest Greens in the North.” From your first tee shot until your final putt you will enjoy the peace and tranquility of “The North.”

Charlevoix Country Club is a four-star Jerry Matthews design that offers golfers beautifully manicured bent grass fairways and large undulating putting surfaces. Water dominates the landscape, as many holes weave their way across a nice mix of open and tree lined holes with expansive surrounds of heather. There are many birdie and par opportunities to be had, but the last 4 holes are among the most challenging finishing holes in northern Michigan. This course proves to be worth the drive!!

Colonial Michilimackinac

GO BACK IN TIME AT MACKINAC STATE HISTORIC PARKS The best history lesson EVER! BY ELIZABETH EDWARDS

Mackinac State Historic Parks is home to Colonial Michilimackinac in Mackinaw City and Fort Mackinac and Fort Holmes on Mackinac Island. A visit to these extraordinarily well-preserved sites is about as close to a marching order as you’ll get during your vacation. The forts and other historic buildings are open May–October. For more information: mackinacparks.com.

COLONIAL MICHILIMACKINAC, MACKINAW CITY

It’s called Colonial Michilimackinac, but this hub of Great Lakes history (tucked on the Straits of Mackinac in the shadow of the Mackinac Bridge) is all about Fort Michilimackinac. Constructed in 1715 by French soldiers and fur traders, the fort fell into British hands in 1761. It was abandoned during the American Revolution, when British troops built and occupied Fort Mackinac on Mackinac Island. Nowadays, the grounds within the stockades are abuzz with costumed interpreters. See British soldiers giving rifle demonstrations, firing the fort cannon and other costumed interpreters offering craft and wood-fire cooking demonstrations. Visitors can even watch the ongoing archeological dig that goes on each summer within the fort walls.

Guns Across the Straits! In this special program, visitors at least 13 years old can reserve a chance to fire two kinds of muskets, a mortar and the fort cannon. The experience is only open to one person a day and costs $115.

FORT MACKINAC, MACKINAC ISLAND

Founded in 1780, Fort Mackinac sits on a limestone bluff overlooking the island’s downtown and the wild waters of Lake Huron and Lake Michigan. Its sweeping views made it a strategic outpost for the British and United States armies for 115 years. Though the real action here ceased in 1885,

the fort’s 14 original historic buildings still echo with the sounds of military pomp thanks to costumed interpreters. Hear the wicked crack of a rifle fired by a 19th-century American soldier and quick-step to the parade grounds, where you’re likely to catch a cannon-firing demonstration or a court-martial reenactment. Bagpipes, fifes, bugles and drums play in the background as you make your way through the fort’s exhibits. Grab lunch at the Fort Mackinac Tea Room, which is run by Grand Hotel. Fire the Fort Mackinac Cannon! Reserve (at least three days in advance) your chance to clean, load and fire the fort cannon. The experience is open to one person every morning. The cost is $50. mackinacparks.com

FORT HOLMES, MACKINAC ISLAND

Fort Holmes was built by British soldiers in 1814 during the War of 1812 to protect Fort Mackinac against an attack. When United States soldiers peacefully reoccupied the island after the War of 1812, the fort was renamed Fort Holmes in honor of American Major Andrew Hunter Holmes, who was killed in the 1814 battle of Mackinac Island. Fort Holmes was eventually abandoned. Visitors on Mackinac Island can now visit the recently reconstructed fort, which can be found one mile north of downtown on Fort Holmes Road. Admission is free and the fort is open to the public during normal operating hours May through October. The fort sits at the highest point on Mackinac Island—the views of neighboring Round Island and the Straits are absolutely incredible.

Little Traverse Bay Ferry Getting there is half the fun—but in this case, it might be all the fun! BY ELIZABETH EDWARDS

Harbor Springs

Avoid the traffic and hop the sweet Little Traverse Bay Ferry that makes runs to and from Bay Harbor, Petoskey and Harbor Springs during the summer. With a spacious deck and covered seating, the ferry makes the crossing comfortable and oh-so-scenic. Staying in Bay Harbor and want to have lunch in Harbor Springs? It’s a breeze. Staying in Petoskey and want to shop in Harbor Springs? Yep. It’s a breeze. Want to have a couple drinks in Bay Harbor and let someone else do the driving back to your Petoskey hotel? The ferry is for you. Last year was the first summer for the Little Traverse Bay Ferry—which of course meant it opened amid the pandemic. Nevertheless, 7,000 riders made the enjoyable trip across the bay. “The ferry just makes people so happy,” says Executive Director Ami Klykken. The Little Traverse Bay Ferry will operate from Memorial Day through the summer (weather depending), six days a week from 9:45 a.m. to 9:45 p.m. Saturday’s schedule is the same except the evening run is a sunset cruise out of Bay Harbor. Tickets are $7.50 to go from Point A to Point B. For more information and to purchase tickets: littletraversebayferry.org. 2021 MYNORTH

Plan a weekend full of outdoor fun. MyNorth.com/Outdoors

A visit to Petoskey State Park, with its mile of shoreline dappled with wildly beautiful dunes and bordered by crystalline bay water, is a must for beach and nature lovers. Although situated between Petoskey and Harbor Springs, the park’s dune-backed beaches on Little Traverse Bay feel miles from anywhere. Pick your own quiet spot in the sun or stroll the shoreline looking for Petoskey stones (fossilized coral etched with a honeycomb design that this region is famous for). Take an easy stroll on the forested hiking trails—Portage Trail is two miles round-trip and Old Baldy is just a half-mile round trip. Once you’ve made it to Old Baldy, climb the stairs to take in the view of the bay. Beyond dunes, forest and water, find sand volleyball courts and 180 modern campsites—tailor-made for Lake Michigan sunsets and s’mores. michigan.gov/dnr

SIP LIKE A LOCAL

Spend a day (or a whole weekend) exploring the Petoskey Wine Region, and top off your summer adventures with a cold pint at a hip brewery. The Petoskey-Straits region has your pour waiting. BY CARLY SIMPSON

HIT THE WINE TRAIL

The Petoskey Wine Region is home to 14 distinct wineries with tasting rooms as unique as the grape varieties being grown in the northern vineyards stretching from Ellsworth to Harbor Springs. Here's a peek at just three of the destinations you'll find on a trip to Michigan's newest wine region (and trust us, the other 11 are must-visits, too). Plan your trip online at petoskey.wine. 1. A castle. Built in 1918, Castle Farms in Charlevoix is modeled after the stone barns and castles found in Normandy, France. The 1918 Cellars Wine Tasting Room is set in the Queen's Tavern with indoor and outdoor seating. 2. A treehouse. Boyne Valley Vineyards, tucked on US-31 between Petoskey and Walloon Lake, is constructing an elevated tree house tasting deck overlooking the vineyard and surrounded by maple trees. It's set to open to guests in late spring 2021. 3. A farm. Rudbeckia Farm and Winery in Petoskey (also home to Burnt Marshmallow Brewstillery) is set on 150 acres, all open for guests to explore with bevvies in hand—take a hilltop hike for views of Walloon Lake and Lake Michigan. The family-friendly tasting room also has bocce, corn hole, open fields for kite flying, snacks for kids and more.

KICK BACK WITH A CRAFT BEER

After a day in the sun and surf, swing by these local hangouts. In Petoskey, find memorable craft brews, kicked up bar-food and entertainment at both Petoskey Brewing Company and Beards Brewing. Downtown, relax in The Back Lot Beer Garden, which has plenty of outdoor seating and on-site food trucks, or grab a beer and a bite at one of several beloved pubs: Mitchell Street Pub, Noggin Room Pub, Tap 30 or POUR Public House. You can even belly up to the same bar Ernest Hemingway once frequented at City Park Grill. In downtown Boyne City, Stiggs Brewery and Boyne City Tap Room offer a buzzy nightlife and great food. Farther north in Mackinaw City, Bière de Mac Brew Works has a hearty food menu and a mission to make all 150-plus different styles of beer that have been classified by the Brewers Association. On tap at Rusted Spoke Brewing Co., also in Mackinaw City, are a handful of house brews and a cool bar menu with smoked wings, flatbread pizzas and BBQ tater tot nachos. Of course, to get that authentic Up North, laid-back bar experience, just head over the Mackinac Bridge to St. Ignace, where you can soak it up at The Driftwood Restaurant & Sports Bar. For another classic Up North experience, hop the ferry to Mackinac Island where Great Turtle Brewery and Distillery, opened in June 2020, joins long-time, beloved island watering holes including Pink Pony, Mustang Lounge, Yankee Rebel Tavern and Horn’s Gaslight Bar.

CHEERS!

Mammoth Distilling opened a new tasting room in Bay Harbor in July 2020 offering tastings, cocktails and bottle sales. Mammoth also has locations in Traverse City, Bellaire, Central Lake and downstate in Adrian. High Five Spirits in downtown Petoskey is another worthy pit stop—its canned cocktails are great for shoreside picnics, as many beaches don't allow glass bottles. 2021 MYNORTH

Tunnel of Trees Tour One beautiful drive.

BY ELIZABETH EDWARDS

Northern Michigan’s Tunnel of Trees on M-119 is one of the state’s most iconic attractions. The scenic road winds from Harbor Springs, north of Petoskey, to Cross Village. Along the way, canopies of trees open to reveal gorgeous views of Little Traverse Bay. These six stops make a beautiful drive even more special.

STOP 1: THORNE SWIFT NATURE PRESERVE

Stop for some beach time (905 feet of Lake Michigan shoreline) and short hikes through the woods at this gorgeous preserve. You’ll want to work up a good appetite for your next stop. landtrust.org

STOP 2: POND HILL FARM

Find Pond Hill Farm about four miles beyond Thorne Swift, on the right. This family-owned operation includes a market with their farm-grown produce, vineyard, winery and a brewery. Pond Hill’s Garden Cafe makes a wonderful lunch stop, too. pondhill.com

STOP 3: HOOGLAND FAMILY NATURE PRESERVE

Walk off that lunch (and those drinks!) just up the road on the 1.5-mile looped trail that winds through the nature preserve. landtrust.org

LODGING FOR EVERYONE In the storied Petoskey-Straits region, chances are your room will be historic … BY ELIZABETH EDWARDS

The big player here is Boyne Resorts, with every lodging option under the sun at its amenity-filled resorts: Boyne Mountain, Boyne Highlands and Inn at Bay Harbor (boyneresorts.com). Also in Bay Harbor, find the newly redone Village Suites Bay Harbor. bayharbor.com Venerable inns (most dating to the end of the 19th century but graciously updated) abound here. On Mackinac Island, find the legendary Grand Hotel (grandhotel.com) and Mission Point Resort (missionpoint.com), as well as a slew of other inns made for whiling away island days in a rocker on the porch. mackinacisland.org In the Petoskey area, Stafford’s Perry Hotel, Bay View Inn and Crooked River Lodge are well-known for their gracious hospitality (staffords.com). The Colonial Inn Hotel (harborsprings.com) in Harbor Springs and the Terrace Inn (theterraceinn.com) in Bay View are two other historically fabulous places to stay.

The motorcoach crowd is well-covered at both Hearthside Grove Motorcoach Resort (hearthsidegrove.com) and Petoskey RV Resort (sunrvresorts.com). Rustic and hook-up camping is available at gorgeous sites on or near Lake Michigan at Wilderness State Park and Petoskey State Park (michigan.gov/dnr). Just over the bridge, St. Ignace is known for its clean, vintage motels and cabin resorts that come with the best amenity of all—Yooper hospitality. stignace.com Beyond all of that, private cottages and homes are available to rent throughout the region. Check out the usual sites including vrbo.com and airbnb.com. But don’t overlook Graham Management, based in Harbor Springs, for their insider’s knowledge of the rental scene. grahammgt.com 2021 MYNORTH

HAVE A DOG? HAVE FUN!

Keep your canine leashed, and there are gazillions of places to take your pup in the Petoskey-Straits region.

PARKS AND BEACHES

Dog-friendly recreation is not in short supply—some choice spots to check out: Bayfront Park in Petoskey, Zoll Street Beach in Harbor Springs, Headlands International Dark Sky Park in Mackinaw City and Tannery Beach in Boyne City. Also in Boyne City, check out Ridge Run Dog Park. If you’re looking to wind down with your pup, many of the area’s wineries, brewpubs and cafés have designated areas for you and your pooch to hang out—call ahead to confirm!

NATURE PRESERVES

Out of the dozens of natural areas managed by the Little Traverse Conservancy, only a handful don’t allow dogs: Woollam Family Nature Preserve, Sally Stebbins Nature Preserve, Thorne Swift Nature Preserve and the Waldron Fen Nature Preserve. For a full list of the many scenic preserves that do welcome your pup, check out landtrust.org.

MACKINAC ISLAND

Dogs can hop on a ferry to Mackinac Island (free on your lap; child’s fare for big dogs), and many of the island bike liveries also rent pet trailers. Or go for the big wag and take your dog for a live-action history lesson at Fort Mackinac on Mackinac Island or Colonial Michilimackinac in Mackinaw City. 24

PIERCE STOCKING SCENIC DRIVE

in Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore

Take this 7.4-mile drive to get the lay of this beautiful land. BY ELIZABETH EDWARDS

30

MYNORTH.COM

0521_VG_leelanau.indd 30

4/6/21 10:04 PM

Most folks associate Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore with the fun mountain of sand known as the Dune Climb. While no one should miss that park attraction, the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive unlocks the natural wonders of this precious landscape. Before heading to Pierce Stocking, it’s worth stopping at the visitor center (corner of M-72 and M-22 in Empire) for maps, guidebooks and a park pass—though you can also purchase a pass at the gate. There are 12 stops along the scenic drive. Here’s a sneak peek at some of the most dramatic.

STOP 2: GLEN LAKE OVERLOOK

This stop offers a bird’s-eye view of the glittering Glen Lakes, products of glaciers that formed in the Ice Age. From here, you can see across Little Glen to where it joins Big Glen under the M-22 bridge known as The Narrows.

STOP 2A: PICNIC MOUNTAIN PHOTOS BY TAYLOR BROWN

Yep, this is the perfect place to spread a blanket and open that food basket.

STOP 3: DUNE OVERLOOK

From this point, you can pick out North and South Manitou islands across Lake Michigan’s Sleeping Bear Bay, Pyramid Point (so named by sailors for its shape), the dunes and the Glen Lakes.

STOP 4: COTTONWOOD TRAIL

Here’s your chance to stretch your legs and get up close and personal with the dunes. This 1.5-mile hike moves you up and down dunes, across blowouts, past patches of bearberry and buffalo berry and cottonwood trees half-buried in the sand. Sand makes a marvelous canvas for animal tracks, so keep your eyes peeled. Note, the trail is strenuous in several spots.

STOP 8: CHANGES OVER TIME

Learn how the landscape has changed since the last glaciers in the area melted about 11,800 years ago.

STOP 9: LAKE MICHIGAN OVERLOOK

This is the pièce de résistance of all Northern Michigan attractions. The viewing platform is perched 450 feet above Lake Michigan. You’ll catch your breath at the sight of glittering water that stretches below you. South—to your left—are the Empire Bluffs, which are the gateway to Platte Bay. The Manitou Islands are on the horizon and Sleeping Bear Point is to the north.

STOP 10: SLEEPING BEAR DUNE OVERLOOK

From this view, you can see what is left of the dune that lent its name to the entire 111-square-mile national lakeshore. The dune was formed some 2,000 years ago by Lake Michigan winds depositing sand from the bluff. It once stood 230 feet above the lake. By 1961, the dune was only 132 feet high, and by 1980, it was down to 103 feet. The process is a continuing one. The major cause of the dune’s erosion is wave action wearing away the base of the plateau on which it rests. 2021 MYNORTH

NORTH BAR LAKE, EMPIRE

Cool off in Lake Michigan after basking in the warm water of North Bar Lake—a small inland lake that drains into Lake Michigan. The creek between North Bar and Lake Michigan was made for skim boarding, sand dams and general splashing around. Find restrooms at the paved parking area. National Park Pass required. nps.gov/slbe GET THERE: From Voice Road north of Empire, take N. Bar Lake Road to Larahr Road.

GLEN HAVEN BEACH

Work a little maritime history lesson into your beach day at the Cannery Boathouse Museum and/or the Sleeping Bear Point Coast Guard Station (both a part of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore). But no one would blame you if you skipped the history for the mile or so of sandy beach bordered by blue water (with the Manitou Islands on the horizon) that runs from Glen Haven to Sleeping Bear Point. Find restrooms in Glen Haven and at the Coast Guard Station Museum. National Park Pass required. nps.gov/ slbe GET THERE: From Glen Arbor, drive west on M-109, turn right onto Glen Haven Road.

Shalda Creek / Good Harbor Beach

SHALDA CREEK/GOOD HARBOR BEACH

Some folks call Good Harbor Beach the Copacabana of Sleeping Bear Dunes—a big, long beach that can accommodate the crowds that flock to it. Views of the Manitou Islands, huge swathes of soft sand and a softly-sloping, kid-friendly beach; perfect for a sunset bonfire. Wait there’s more: Turn left at the Bohemian Road beach and keep going until you see the sign for Shalda Creek—a slow-mo, shallow, sandy-bottomed dream that empties into Lake Michigan. Vault toilets. National Park Pass required. nps.gov/slbe GET THERE: Take either CR-669 (Bohemian Road) or CR-651 (Good Harbor Trail) from M-22, between Glen Arbor and Leland.

VAN’S BEACH, LELAND

This beach gives you the best of all worlds: soft sand, views of the Manitou Islands, great rock hunting (including the coveted Leland Blue stone) and easy access to the food and drink hangouts of Leland and Fishtown. Public restrooms at Leland Township Marina. GET THERE: Access at the west end of Cedar Street (turn by Van’s Garage).

CHRISTMAS COVE, NORTHPORT

A township park, this is a secluded half-moon stretch of sandy beach near the tip of the peninsula. A short downhill path leads to Nirvana. Some parking and pit toilets are available. northportomenachamber.org GET THERE: From Northport, head north on CR-201 (N. Mill Street) for 1.5 miles. Jog left on N. Kilcherman Road until it turns into E. Christmas Cove Road. The beach is just over a mile down E. Christmas Cove Road. 2021 MYNORTH

SMALL TOWNS, BIG CHARM

The eclectic towns of the Leelanau Peninsula are all alive with shopping, restaurants, outdoor concerts and more. Here’s your introduction. BY ELIZABETH EDWARDS

CEDAR/MAPLE CITY

Cedar boasts a new coffee shop and market/butcher shop this summer. Also check out Wool & Honey, a sheep-to-needles yarn shop, and the Polish Art Center. Due east in Maple City find killer breakfasts at Pegtown Station and eat, drink and learn to curl (on an indoor rink) at Broomstack Kitchen & Taphouse. Over on M-22, put the Little Traverse Inn and Market 22 on your must-eat-there list.

EMPIRE

The Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore’s Visitors Center is located here and so is the Empire Bluff hiking trail with its glorious view of Lake Michigan. Empire Beach, just off the downtown, boasts a combo of Lake Michigan and (the warmer) South Bar Lake frontage. Browse sweet shops and take a surfing lesson from Sleeping Bear Surf & Kayak. The Village Inn and Joe’s Friendly Tavern do pub fare right, and Shipwreck Cafe offers fab sammies and wood-fired pizza. empirechamber.com

GLEN ARBOR

Set in the middle of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and on Sleeping Bear Bay, this town exudes outdoor fun. Kayak the Crystal River, bike the Heritage Trail (rent bikes and kayaks at The Cyclery and Crystal River Outfitters) or spread your towel at an in-town beach. Discover all things cherry at Cherry Republic, eat a burger at iconic Art’s Tavern, dine on the bay at Blu and wine taste at M22 Winery, Cherry Republic and Glen Arbor Wines. visitglenarbor.com

LAKE LEELANAU

Situated on the beautiful Lake Leelanau Narrows, this town mixes a friendly vibe with the buzz of three wine and cider tasting rooms (Boathouse, Amoritas and Soul Squeeze) and Northern Latitudes Distillery. Find authentic Indian carry-out at NJ’s Grocery, great coffee at Pedaling Beans, classic tavern fare at Dick’s Pour House and Florentine-style street pizza at Nittolo's. A small public beach on Lake Leelanau at the end of North Popp Road is perfect for kids and picnics. leelanauchamber.com

LELAND

This coastal town shines from its Main Street down to its harbor and the wharf and shanties of Fishtown. Book a Lake Michigan charter here or hop the ferry to the Manitou islands. Don’t miss beautiful Van’s Beach behind Falling Waters Lodge. Sweet little Nedow’s Bay Beach is on Lake Leelanau at the end of Pearl Street. Dining scene stars include to-go sammies at the Village Cheese Shanty in Fishtown and restaurants including The Cove, Riverside Inn, Bluebird and Bogey's at the Leland Lodge. Wine taste downtown at Verterra. lelandmi.com

NORTHPORT

This postcard-perfect town is the gateway to the tippy-top of the Leelanau Peninsula where Grand Traverse Lighthouse, Leelanau State Park and Peterson Park are located. Find fun, funky shops and eateries (standouts: The Tribune, Garage Bar & Grill and New Bohemian Cafe) and The Mitten Brewing Company. Just south of town, Fischer’s Happy Hour Tavern is a classic. Beach-it downtown at Bay Front Park or head to the state park. northportomenachamber.org

OMENA/PESHAWBESTOWN

Omena, a charming postage stamp-sized town perched on Omena Bay, is home to Tamarack Gallery. Take a table overlooking lovely Omena Bay at Knot Just a Bar and Leelanau Cellars. In Peshawbestown, home of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians, find Leelanau Sands Casino and the Eeyawing Museum and Cultural Center. northportomenachamber.org; gtbindians.org

SUTTONS BAY

Set on the waters of Suttons Bay and embraced by wine country, this town rocks a hip vibe with its eclectic mix of shops, restaurants (Martha’s Leelanau Table, Wren, Streetside Grille, Prime Time Pub and VI Grill are musts) and the community-owned Bay Theatre. The hopping Hop Lot Brewing Co. is just south of town. Find TART’s Leelanau Trail at the edge of town. Beach it at Suttons Bay Marina a block off the downtown where the picture-worthy schooner and schoolship Inland Seas is docked. suttonsbayarea.com 2021 MYNORTH

Take a frame-able photo of the Fishtown tugs Janice Sue and Joy tied up at the wharf.

Order a pretzel-bread sandwich at Village Cheese Shanty and eat it on the dock.

Take a selfie in front of the dam (with the shanties and harbor in the background).

Book a charter boat and catch your own fish on the big lake.

Bring a rod and reel and fish off the dock.

Watch for otters swimming up the river.

Eat at The Cove restaurant, overlooking Fishtown.

Stop at the Fishtown Preservation Welcome Center and learn 10 things you didn’t know about Fishtown. Book a room at Falling Waters Lodge across the river so you can go to bed in Fishtown and wake up there. Make a donation at fishtownmi.org and ensure Fishtown remains here forever.

BIKE THE SLEEPING BEAR HERITAGE TRAIL

More than just a bike ride, this 20-mile trail that stretches from Empire to north of Glen Arbor is a day destination. BY ELIZABETH EDWARDS

A great way to tackle this trail is to spot a car at one end and brake at the attractions along the way. Here’s a snapshot of the trail’s highlights, beginning in Empire and heading north to the trail’s end at Bohemian Road.

LEG 1: EMPIRE TO THE DUNE CLIMB

Pick up sandwiches (you won’t regret this decision, trust us!) at Shipwreck Cafe, tuck them in your backpack for a picnic later and head off to the Bar Lake Road Trailhead. It’s about a five-mile ride with one big downhill (remember that’ll be uphill if you work this trail north to south) to the Sleeping Bear Dune Climb where there are picnic tables, bathrooms, a concession— and a chance to add a hike up this big, beautiful dune to your day’s workout.

LEG 2: DUNE CLIMB TO GLEN HAVEN

It’s about a 4.5-mile pedal along a wooded trail to tiny Glen Haven with its stunning beach, old-fashioned general store, the Cannery Boat Museum and nice bathrooms, all owned and managed by Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. While you’re in Glen Haven, check out the renovation progress on the old Sleeping Bear Inn across the road from the general store.

LEG 3: GLEN HAVEN TO GLEN ARBOR

This stretch takes you through the D.H. Day Campground then back into the woods to Glen Arbor. This town is filled with eateries, shops and wine tasting spots. Check out the Glen Arbor section in “Small Towns, Big Charm” (page 37) for highlights.

LEG 4: GLEN ARBOR TO THE HOMESTEAD

Just north of Glen Arbor, take time to pedal into The Homestead resort and explore the darling Mountain Village with its outdoor bar and seating at Whisker’s Bar and Grill, as well as the pizza, ice cream and other eats at Cavanaugh’s Grocerant.

LEG 5: THE HOMESTEAD TO BOHEMIAN ROAD

This section leads past Oleson Farm, headquarters for the Port Oneida Historic District that you’ll be pedaling past. Stop for a quick history lesson that will greatly enrich your experience on this last leg of the trail. Note: When complete, the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail will stretch 27 miles from the northern end of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (Good Harbor Beach at CR-651), to Manning Road, just south of Empire. SIP LIKE A LOCAL

Leelanau is known as “The Land of Delight,” so you might imagine that when the ingredients are Leelanau-grown and the bottles are poured in the Leelanau countryside, the region’s wine, beer, hard cider and spirits taste, well, delightful. BY CARLY SIMPSON & ELIZABETH EDWARDS

New to the peninsula, Farm Club opened in July 2020. The farm/market/restaurant/brewery is a collaboration between Allison and Gary Jonas of Traverse City’s Little Fleet and Sara and Nic Thiesen of Leelanau’s Loma Farm. With a farm-fresh menu, nuanced, lower-ABV beers and easy access to the Leelanau Trail, it’s become a destination for all ages. For the 21-plus club, it's only fitting when visiting Leelanau, set as it is on the 45th Parallel (the same parallel as France’s Bordeaux and Côtes du Rhône regions and the Piedmont region of Italy), that your trip includes a stop at one of this peninsula’s 32 wineries and tasting rooms with their watery views and gorgeous settings. But this American Viticultural Area (AVA) is more than just a pretty face. Grapes thrive in this microclimate buffered from frosts and debilitating heat by Lake Michigan and inland lakes. The complex soil—a tapestry of clay, sand and glacial till—creates complex flavors that a handful of talented winemakers are turning into national and international award-winning wines. From the light, stone fruit sweetness of a riesling to the elegant notes of a pinot noir, Leelanau’s wines are world-class. The Leelanau Peninsula Wine Trail (the marketing organization for the wineries) makes it simple to plot your route by mapping the wineries into three loops: Sleeping Bear, Northern and Grand Traverse Bay. The organization’s website, lpwines.com, keeps you up to date on fun events happening in wine country and has extensive information about chauffeured tours (DDs being so important!), weddings and other group events at the wineries. Where grapes flourish, so do apples, and Leelanau is lucky to have three rustic cideries, all located in Suttons Bay, where you can sip hard cider surrounded by orchards. Nikki and Dan Rothwell opened Tandem Ciders a decade ago after having a cider epiphany on a bicycle tour of Southern England. Since then, two more cideries, Suttons Bay Ciders and Two K Farms, have grown up on the peninsula, using both heritage apple varieties and agricultural newcomers like the Honeycrisp to produce a range of bone dry to satisfyingly sweet beverages. Many of the wineries also produce cider, so it’s easy to get your apple fix. And there’s not a town on the Leelanau Peninsula that doesn’t have at least one Up North-style tavern with an array of taps and an ice-cold glass waiting for you. The past decade has also brought a handful of breweries, including Hop Lot Brewing Co. in Suttons Bay, The Mitten Brewing Co. in Northport and Cherry Republic Brewing Co. in Glen Arbor. At Hop Lot, the Lutke family has created a welcoming hangout inside the taproom and out—but the four-season beer garden really takes the cake with fire pits, a stage for live music and plenty of room to spread out. And Cherry Republic Brewing Co. has the very cherry bonus of being located at the original Cherry Republic campus with its cheerful gardens, pit-spitting arena and lots of goodies for not-yet-21 visitors. When you’re in need of good spirits, you’ll find them aplenty at Northern Latitudes Distillery in Lake Leelanau, where the vibe is always relaxed, and glasses are full. Founders and owners Mark and Mandy Moseler craft vodkas, gins, rums, liqueurs and bourbon whiskey with Leelanau water, cherries and saskatoon berries, and you bet the corn, malt, barley and sugar beets are Michigan-grown, too. In nearby Leland, you’ll also want to check out the Traverse City-based spirits at Grand Traverse Distillery’s intimate tasting room with its old-timey bar ambiance (open seasonally; find hours online). 2021 MYNORTH

EXPLORE

Leelanau State Park Don't miss this jewel at the tip of the Leelanau Peninsula. BY ELIZABETH EDWARDS

North of Northport, perched at the tip of the Leelanau Peninsula, and surrounded by the expanse of Lake Michigan, this approximately 1,350-acre park offers camping, captivating beaches, hiking trails and lighthouse tours.

GRAND TRAVERSE LIGHTHOUSE

This 1858 beauty that sits within the equally beautiful Leelanau State Park has been fully restored. Climb 50 feet to the top of the tower for an unforgettable view of Lake Michigan, and tour the keeper’s quarters and exhibits that feature lighthouse history and archaeology, shipwrecks and area Native American settlements. A rare opportunity to live a light-keeper’s life is offered through a volunteer keeper program. grandtraverselighthouse.com

CAMPING

Up at the tippy top of the Leelanau Peninsula, you’ll wake to Lake Michigan sunrises and go to sleep to Lake Michigan sunsets at this state park that houses a rustic campground and three mini cabins. michigan.gov/dnr

46

HIKING TRAILS

Six miles of looped trails that cover everything from hills, forested trails, wetlands along serene Mud Lake and dunes make this a lovely hiking destination. Don’t miss the 2.2-mile roundtrip hike to Manitou Overlook, accessed from the Lake Michigan Trail where (on clear days) you’ll see North Manitou and the Fox Islands floating on the horizon. Access the trailhead at the end of Densmore Road, approximately five miles south of the lighthouse/day-use area. michigan.gov/dnr

CATHEAD BAY

This pristine bay on Lake Michigan with its 1.5 miles of shoreline (no pets, please), wide sandy beaches and great rock hunting lies at the park’s southern end. Access it from the main trailhead at the end of Densmore Road, five miles south of the campground. Once you park your car, you’ll need to hike about a mile along the Lake Michigan Trail/Cathead Spur to reach the beach—a destination that’s well worth the effort! michigan.gov/dnr

HAVE A DOG? HAVE FUN!

Finding a place for Fido to unwind isn’t hard in this land of forests and beaches. Here are some places any dog would pay to go. Remember, Michigan law requires dogs to be on 6-foot leashes in public. BY ALLISON JARRELL

NATURE PRESERVES

All Leelanau Conservancy natural areas allow your canine companions. The best dog walking trails are at DeYoung Natural Area, Clay Cliffs Natural Area, Palmer Woods Forest Reserve, Krumwiede Forest Reserve and Chippewa Run Natural Area. (Note: Pets and humans are discouraged from visiting ecologically sensitive areas, including Soper Natural Area and Gull Island Preserve.)

In Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, dogs are allowed on most trails and on beaches from the Maritime Museum in Glen Haven to the western edge of Glen Arbor, from Pyramid Point to CR-669 and from CR-651 north to the park boundary. Pups are also welcome at the Glen Lake picnic area just across M-22 from the Dune Climb.

LEELANAU STATE PARK

The Leelanau State Park, at the northern tip of Leelanau County, has 8.5 dog-friendly miles of trails! Dogs are also allowed at the state park campground, but make a note to skip the beaches, as they’re home to protected nesting areas for the endangered piping plover. 48

GREAT IN-TOWN BEACHES

MyNorth.com/Boating

A short walk from downtown Traverse City puts you on West Grand Traverse Bay—with several beach lovers’ playgrounds that most towns only dream about. BY KANDACE CHAPPLE

Bryant Park CLINCH PARK BEACH

You can reach Clinch Park Beach through the pedestrian tunnel under US-31 at Cass Street. (Have fun with the little ones singing in the tunnel and hearing the echo!) This beach is clean, roomy and offers parent-friendly accommodations like flush toilets, changing rooms and a snack bar. Couples can find solitude under the shade trees and bike lovers can cruise the paved TART trail that runs along the beach area.

VOLLEYBALL BEACH

It’s not summer until you see the balls volleying at this beach just west of Union Street, across from Hall Street, at West End Park. Watch league play or carve out a night of fun with friends.

WEST END BEACH

Find restrooms and a picnic shelter at West End Beach at the foot of Division Street. Dogs are allowed on the far west end of the beach (on leash and with love). Parking is harder to come by here, so go early and get your spot.

SUNSET BEACH

Sunset Beach is a lesser-known stretch of sand at the foot of Hope Street and flanked on either side by the Hagerty Center and the Maritime Academy. Enjoy the views of the big ships and, of course, the sunset!

BRYANT PARK

This beach is a popular haven at the base of Old Mission Peninsula, where Garfield Avenue meets Peninsula Drive. Parking is ample, so nab it and enjoy the playground, picnic tables and restrooms. Bring hot dogs and use the BBQ grills with the fam.

EAST BAY PARK

This park sits in the quiet neighborhood near Northwestern Michigan College. There are restrooms, a picnic shelter and shallow water, making it ideal for young families. Located at the end of East Front Street where it meets East Grand Traverse Bay, there are shade trees and grassy areas for land lubbers. 2021 MYNORTH

OLD MISSION MUSTS Don't leave Traverse City without getting to know this stunning peninsula. BY KANDACE CHAPPLE

Old Mission Peninsula is revered in Traverse City—with good reason. This 22–mile slice of Michigan offers stunning orchards, world-renowned wineries and gorgeous views of Grand Traverse Bay. The peninsula is nestled between East and West Grand Traverse bays and offers water views (left and right!) along the two-lane M-37 that weaves all the way out to the Mission Point Lighthouse standing guard at the very tip of the peninsula. missionpointlighthouse.com

PHOTOS BY DAVE WEIDNER

Take your time getting there and enjoy the views—all while picking fun spots to hit on your way back. At the lighthouse, dip your toes in the water, and take a hike or bike on the trails in the five-acre park. The lighthouse is actually a decommissioned coastal beacon built in 1870 that now offers a gift shop and museum to explore. As you head out, you’ll find seasonal fruit stands with apples, peaches, plums and, of course, cherries. When it’s time for a little hydration, stop into Old Mission General Store (231.223.4310), circa 1839, for a Coke and antique charm.

You can make your way over to the shallow, calm waters (perfect for younger kids) at Haserot Beach in the protective curve of Old Mission Harbor. Or, go the other way and cut across to Peninsula Drive to check out hot spots for dinner like Jolly Pumpkin (jollypumpkin.com) with its bulgogi short rib and Old Mission Rum, or try the goodness of farm-to-table meals at Boathouse Restaurant. boathouseonwestbay.com Along the way, you might start to count the wineries you see. There are nearly a dozen! You can’t go wrong with any of them, but the view at Chateau Chantal is stunning. Pick up a bottle of their Tonight wine, a dry riesling–chardonnay blend, to celebrate the first (or next!) night of your trip. chateauchantal.com At dusk, make a point to stop at the Old Mission Scenic Overlook on M-37. It’s a must-see sunset spot for locals and visitors alike.

play ON THE BAY

It’s the cornerstone to every trip to TC: A must-see-swim-soak-sun day on Grand Traverse Bay. BY KANDACE CHAPPLE

SWIM IN

It goes without saying, Clinch Park near downtown TC is a must. There are SUP and kayak rentals, ice cream and dreamy turquoise blue Adirondack chairs overlooking the marina. Oh, and 1,500 feet of sandy beach along gorgeous Lake Michigan water. The little ones can play at the splash pad, and the adults can sink into those Adirondacks. The perfect family day all in one.

SAIL IN

Traverse Tall Ship Company offers excursions on the Tall Ship Manitou, a replica of an 1800s cargo schooner, similar to those that sailed the Great Lakes and the Atlantic Ocean. (If you’re on shore, watch for it in the bay—it’s cool just to see it sail by!) Consider the daily 10 a.m. “Bloody Mary Cruise” or the “Manitou Moomer’s Ice Cream Sail” offered twice a day for families all summer long. tallshipsailing.com

SOAR ABOVE

Do you dare? Try flying high over the bay with a parasail. Grand Traverse Parasail (gtparasail.com) and Traverse Bay Parasail (tbparasail.com) offer packages that include 60- to 90-minute boat rides with 10–15 minutes of soaring. Bring a support buddy if you’d like—solo, tandem and triple flyers are welcome. Standby passengers are welcome, too, if they can’t be convinced to join in!

CAMP OUT

Keith J. Charters Traverse City State Park is a short walk (on a pedestrian bridge over US-31) from the bay. Spend your nights roasting hot dogs at the 75-acre campground (with electric hook-up sites and heated bathhouses) and your days lounging on the quarter-mile-long sandy beach. The campground backs up to the TART trail—bring your bikes and pedal to ice cream or pizza. michigan.gov/dnr

PADDLE IT

You can rent a SUP at Clinch Park or at a number of local shops like The River Outfitters (therivertc.com). Don’t feel up for the challenge of trying a paddleboard? Take heart—you might consider just sitting on your rump on the board and paddling around enjoying the cool breeze, the stunning views and your companions. These outings are about the moment, not the mileage!

BOAT AROUND

Rent or trailer your own boat to Duncan L. Clinch Marina (traversecitymi.gov/clinch_marina.asp) or Elmwood Township Marina (elmwoodtownshipmarnia.com). Cruise out to Power Island (grandtraverse.org), an uninhabited tiny island in West Grand Traverse Bay with a hiking trail and a small herd of resident whitetail deer. Or motor up to Apache Trout Grill, West End Tavern or Boathouse Restaurant for a bite. If you’re farther out, put in at Suttons Bay Marina (suttonsbayvillage.org) in Suttons Bay or the Edward C. Grace Memorial Harbor in Elk Rapids. (elkrapids.org).

SIP LIKE A LOCAL

Downtown’s buzzing beverage scene, with several breweries, distilleries and a winery, is complemented by a beautiful patchwork of vineyards and hops farms rolling between Old Mission Peninsula’s 11 wineries. BY CARLY SIMPSON

WINERIES

There are more than 40 wineries in the area that comprise the Traverse Wine Coast (which includes the Leelanau Peninsula). You’ll find bottles of bubbly, whites, rosés, reds and even ice wine (a type of dessert wine made from grapes that have been frozen while still on the vine!). In the tasting rooms, each one unique, wines are paired with sunsets over vineyards, crackling fires and breathtaking views of both East and West Grand Traverse Bay. That being said, it’s time for a wine tour! Whether you're looking for a private chauffeur for two to three people, a limo for a special event or a bus for all of your friends who want to savor time spent together and the craft of winemaking, there's a transportation company ready to help. Old Mission Peninsula Wine Trail’s website (ompwinetrail.com) has great info for planning your trip and current updates on annual events, like the famous Mac & Cheese Bake-Off. Know, too, that many of the wineries have expansive outdoor seating so you can spread out and relax. If you want to add on stops along the Leelanau Peninsula Wine Trail, visit lpwines.com to plot your route. INSIDER’S TIP: Many local beaches don’t allow glass bottles. Chateau Chantal has the answer: Try their canned bubbly cherry wine. Each can equals half a bottle of wine, so sip accordingly.

BREWERIES

With more than a dozen breweries in Traverse City and neighboring Williamsburg, and many more pubs and bars to pick from, TC is the perfect destination for craft beer lovers. Newest on the scene, Stone Hound Brewing Co. started welcoming guests in February with cans for carryout and indoor and patio seating. The renovated laundromat-turned-brewery on Bunker Hill Road is owned by Brent Faber, who is joined by Head Brewer Chris Cargill. Chris served as a production brewer for Short's Brewing Company for five years. When you belly up to the bar, be prepared to say, "Wow." An epoxy "river" inlay features 30 pounds of Petoskey, Charlevoix and Leland Blue stones.

Other must-visit hangouts in town include Right Brain Brewery (known for both its eclectic look and beers), Rare Bird Brewpub (where a celebrity or two has also been spotted—hello, Matthew McConaughey), The Filling Station Microbrewery (you can bike there along the Boardman River Trail or the TART) and Earthen Ales, which sits in the heart of The Village at Grand Traverse Commons. And did you know, you can take a TC beer tour by boat or bike? Check out Kayak Brewery Tours (kayakbrewerytours.com), Paddle TC (paddletc.com) and Kayak Bike & Brew (kayakbikebrew.com). INSIDER’S TIP: Interlochen is brimming with brews. Bradley’s Pub & Grille at the Interlochen Golf Course has everything from Bell’s Two Hearted to Miller Lite and PBR on tap. Just up the road is Hofbrau Steak House & American Grille (the “Hoffy” as locals affectionately call it), an Interlochen landmark for more than 100 years with more than 50 choices on its draft list.

DISTILLERIES

The local wine and beer scenes are complemented by a small but mighty craft spirits industry. In downtown’s Warehouse District, Mammoth Distilling Cocktail Lounge offers industrial vibes and a range of classic and creative cocktails. Or, try the “Create Your Own Whiskey Blend” experience and take home a custom bottle of bourbon or rye. You’ll also find high-quality spirits and cool atmospheres at both of TC’s distilleries, Traverse City Whiskey Co. and Grand Traverse Distillery. And don’t forget about the authentic cocktails (and the Prohibition vibe to go with them!) at 123 Speakeasy on West Front Street; Low Bar, located below 7 Monks Taproom on Union Street; and The Parlor, housed in a revamped warehouse on Lake Street. INSIDER’S TIP: To-go cocktails are legal in Michigan as of July 1, 2020, and many local restaurants and bars have added carryout options to their menus. The law doesn't expire until December 2025, so if you’d prefer to enjoy a beverage at home this summer, go for it!

GRAND TRAVERSE COMMONS: A VILLAGE WITHIN A TOWN

Visit this beautiful lesson in the three r's: renovate, restore and reuse. BY KANDACE CHAPPLE

Here’s the thing with The Commons—it’s a village within a town. You’ll enter a world unto itself when you pull onto Cottageview Drive and follow the quiet, narrow winding road into the heart of The Village at Grand Traverse Commons. The sky is spiked with the signature red spires of the former Traverse City State Hospital buildings, more than 100 years old, buildings that have since been renovated into modern-day condos, boutique businesses and fab restaurants, all with a nod to their history. thevillagetc.com

SHOP & SEARCH

Visitors can spend the day shopping in the Mercato (Italian for “market”)—a series of brick hallways and nooks full of one-of-a-kind businesses. You might find yourself lost in the maze of historic walkways … and stumble across finds like Crystal Lake Alpaca Boutique, High Five Threads or Moonstruck Gardens & Leelanau Lavender. Shop and search for the next hidden gem among all the offerings.

DINE & DRINK

After shopping, book a table at Trattoria Stella—probably the most famous restaurant at The Village—designated a Top 100 Wine Restaurant in America by Wine Enthusiast magazine. Cuppa Joe and Red Spire Brunch House are favorite breakfast spots, and the urban winery Left Foot Charley boasts its very own famous Cinnamon Girl hard cider. And if you ask where to get Mexican, everyone in TC will answer with one word: Spanglish. Try their Big Daddy Burrito.

TRAIL & TOUR

The Grand Traverse Commons Natural Area includes 140 acres of unpaved hiking and biking trails through the hills behind Building 50 at The Commons. On your outing, look for the Hippie Tree—painted in a rainbow of colors and filled with feel-good affirmations. In addition, look for the reservoir built in 1894 to help support the former hospital’s fresh-water needs. Today, the concrete structure is covered in brightly colored graffiti and has become a surprising find in the serenity of the woods.

HEAR & HAUNT

For an up-close look at the past, sign up for a tour that takes you through underground tunnels at The Commons dating back to 1883. Spend two hours with a guide exploring multiple floors of buildings yet to be renovated, and venture into the 1883 Steam Tunnel. Discover the origins of Dr. Munson’s “beauty is therapy” philosophy, learn what the iconic red spires were for and, if local legends are true, you might even see a ghost!

PIAZZA & PLAY

In Italy, small towns often have a centrally located piazza where the community gathers together to talk, stroll and enjoy one another’s company. Modeled after a European lifestyle, The Village at Grand Traverse Commons has a park-like area affectionately called The Piazza, home to bocce ball courts, live music, a weekly farmers market, community events and family picnics. Come and enjoy! For more information visit thevillagetc.com

TWO WHEELS ON THE TART TRAILS Ready, set, go for a beautiful ride! BY KANDACE CHAPPLE

If you want to bike in Traverse City, the TART trail is likely in your wheeling, rolling, riding plans. The 10.5-mile-long TART is a paved path that runs from its eastern point at M-72/Bates Road in Acme Township to its western end at Carter Road in Traverse City.

TART (Traverse Area Recreation and Transportation Trails, Inc.) is a nonprofit that connects riders, dog walkers, strollers, rollerbladers and more to many of Traverse City’s shops, restaurants, beaches and neighborhoods via trails. There are many trails that TART builds and maintains, but the in-town, 8-foot-wide paved TART trail is the original. It runs next to two shops that can set you up with bike rentals: Brick Wheels and McLain Cycle & Fitness, both on Eighth Street in Traverse City. Need a little boost? Electric bike rentals are available at Pedego on Garfield Avenue, along with McLain and Brick Wheels. From the bike shops, you can ride the TART east or west. If you head east, you will find yourself riding along slow-moving sections of the railroad tracks. About twice a week, Great Lakes Central Railroad trains pass by (often hauling lumber)—and blow their train whistles at the kids waving from

the trail. Bike up to the cool boardwalks that are scattered along the trail behind Traverse City State Park. Ride as far as Acme and you’ll find several food spots along the way like Bayview Inn Bar & Grill, which offers outdoor dining on a huge deck, a view of the bay (of course!) and free popcorn while you wait for their specialty pizza. If you head west from the bike rental shops, you’ll find yourself crossing the Boardman River over a striking pedestrian bridge and heading into downtown Traverse City. From there, you’ll get to Grand Traverse Bay, including Clinch Park Beach. Stop for ice cream at the pavilion and a cool-off at the splash pad. Once you’re back at the bike shop with your rental, you’re a stone’s throw away from the Traverse Area District Library (with a children’s garden!) and The Filling Station Microbrewery offering flatbread pizzas and salads paired with house-brewed beers at the vintage train depot. For a longer day trip, the west end of the TART connects to the 17-mile, paved Leelanau Trail that takes you all the way to Suttons Bay. This lazy, lovely ride through orchards is a perfect day trip to get lunch in Suttons Bay before heading back. Visit traversetrails.org for more on area trails and parking trailheads. 2021 MYNORTH

The Boardman

There’s no shortage of ways to explore Traverse City’s landmark river, the Boardman. Bring your own vessel or choose from a wide selection of outfitters in the area. BY KANDACE CHAPPLE

For many people, the Boardman holds a special place in their hearts after just one trip down its sometimes unruly, always beautiful, course. Here are a few popular spots to jump on and enjoy the river:

the mouth of the river. You can paddle this calm, smooth stretch of the Boardman behind the shops and restaurants of downtown before turning and floating back down.

The upper stretches of the Boardman are generally slower and lazier. A popular spot to paddle is from Shumsky Road Canoe Launch to Beitner Road. (Just below Beitner are some rapids, so be sure to watch for the spot to get out on the right, just before going under the road.) This stretch takes about 1.5 hours.

Paddle TC’s sister company, Kayak Brewery Tours (kayakbrewerytours.com), also offers outings like the KaBrew where you can paddle and bike brewery to brewery in downtown Traverse City.

Another popular put-in is at Forks State Forest Campground on Brown Bridge Road. There are several places to pull out along the way. A long, leisurely day paddle will take you four to five hours to pull out at Shumsky Road. Some stretches of the Boardman are tight and twisty, so prepare for the occasional dust-up with your partner when you have to lie flat going under an overhanging branch! Other than that, enjoy the wilds of the Boardman. Most of it is truly secluded. You won’t see many houses or people. Instead, you’ll be immersed in Michigan’s beauty with fish rising, ducks paddling and river rippling. For an easy in-town paddle, consider renting from Paddle TC (paddletc.com) at Clinch Park Marina. Paddle along the edge of the swim area on Grand Traverse Bay, heading east just a short stretch, before hooking a right into

74

Another choice for advanced paddlers is The Boardman River Experience, offered by The River Outfitters (therivertc.com) in Traverse City, running about one hour and through some rapids from Jack’s Landing to Medalie Park. (Expect to get wet!) They also rent kayaks and SUPs. You’ll pay around $25–$30 an hour or $75–$100 for a day of kayak or SUP rentals. You also can pick between single or double kayaks and split the cost (and the blame for mishaps!) with a buddy. Paddle TC offers these tips on what to wear: Dress for the water, not the weather. Take into consideration the water temperature rather than the air temperature. Layers of quick-dry clothing are ideal, and hats, sunglasses and sunscreen are highly recommended. Wear sturdy, strap-on sandals or water shoes. Bring, or rent, dry bags for valuables (wallet, keys, phone, etc.). And, always, wear a lifejacket.

LODGING FOR EVERYONE There’s a place for every taste in Traverse City. BY ELIZABETH EDWARDS

Hotel Indigo Welcome to the Traverse City area. Here, it’s small enough to get away from it all, yet big enough to pick from any type of lodging you can imagine.

UPSCALE AND GAMING

The biggest player in the Traverse City lodging scene is Grand Traverse Resort and Spa, owned by the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians, with its combination of hotel rooms, condos and private houses—that come with access to a slew of upscale amenities (grandtraverseresort.com). The tribe also owns nearby Turtle Creek Casino & Hotel where lux rooms and suites accompany the gaming facilities. turtlecreekcasino.com

DOWNTOWN HOTELS

GRACIOUS INNS

Discover some venerable beauties here. Just several blocks off downtown Traverse City find the Wellington Inn (wellingtoninn.com). Country Hermitage Bed & Breakfast is surrounded by cherry orchards and is close

to Grand Traverse Resort (countryhermitage.com). Views of both East and West Grand Traverse Bay as well as a slew of wine tasting opps come with rooms at Chateau Chantal, a winery and inn (chateauchantal.com), and the Old Mission Inn (oldmissioninn.com).

OLD-TIMEY FAMILY RESORTS

These still live happily ever after in the woods scattered amid the forests and small lakes of Grand Traverse County. Standouts include Moonlight Bay Resort (moonlightbayresort.com) on Spider Lake and Brookside Cottages on Duck Lake (brooksidecottagesandresorts.com). At Ranch Rudolf, tucked away on 195 acres of woods on the Boardman River, find ranch-themed motel rooms, horseback riding, paddling, tubing, fishing and more all with a laid-back cowboy atmosphere. ranchrudolf.com

CAMPING

Holiday Park Campground on Silver Lake offers full hook-ups and a private beach (holidayparktc.com). Timber Ridge RV & Recreation Resort is brimming with amenities and equipped with cabins, yurts, RV and tent sites tucked in the woods north of Traverse City. timberridgeresort.net Traverse City State Park, just two miles from downtown Traverse City, offers all types of camping as well as cabins. Maple Bay Natural Area

HAVE A DOG? HAVE FUN!

Traverse City is brimming with pup-friendly recreation and restaurants— it’s truly a dog-lover’s paradise. Here are some popular pet-friendly spots in town. BY ELIZABETH EDWARDS, ALLISON JARRELL AND CARLY SIMPSON

Take your four-legged friend for a walk (a local fave: the TART trail system), then a swim at a pet-friendly beach (try Sunset Park Beach near Northwestern Michigan College) or to lunch downtown (pick from any number of restaurants with sidewalk dining options). To please the kids and the pups, visit the Grand Traverse County Civic Center, which has a huge playground and a paved one-mile loop. Dogs also have their own space at Wags West Dog Park at the corner of Bay and Division streets.

NATURE PRESERVES

The Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy offers several outdoor rec opportunities for your pets, as long as you keep them leashed. Try Hickory Meadows, just a few blocks from downtown Traverse City. The 116-acre property features 2.5 miles of unpaved hiking trails that wander over hills, across meadows and through woodlands. Choose your own adventure and pick from a few scenic vistas to enjoy with your pup. GET THERE: From US-31 (Division Street), head west onto Randolph Street. In about one mile you’ll reach Hickory Meadows on the right before the road ends at Hickory Hills Ski Area. The 250-acre Timbers Recreation Area is also not to be missed, with 4.4 miles of trail that lead you through hardwood forests, fields and riparian wetlands. 78

You and your doggo can enjoy the views from the fishing pier at Fern Lake and stroll along 2,000 feet of frontage on Long Lake. GET THERE: From CR-610 (N. Long Lake Road), turn south on Timbers Trail and follow the sign to the parking area.

SAND LAKES QUIET AREA

East of Traverse City, Sand Lakes Quiet Area Pathway is a 7.4-mile, dog-friendly non-motorized trail, with five lakes in its reach. This 2,775-acre site, featuring rolling hills peppered with a mixture of jack pine, oak and aspen trees, is also a great overnight escape for your furry companion with plenty of walk-in campsites to choose from. GET THERE: From CR-605 (Williamsburg Road), turn east onto Sand Lakes Road then left onto Broomhead Road. The quiet area is on the right.

LIGHTHOUSE PARK

Almost 10 miles of trails offer spectacular views of Grand Traverse Bay and deep forest quiet at the tip of the Old Mission Peninsula (maps are posted in the park). Historic Mission Point Lighthouse is also set within the park, and picnic tables are available for a post-hike lunch. There's also access to a beach, where your pup can cool off in the water. GET THERE: Take M-37 until it ends at the lighthouse parking lot.

Elk Lake, Torch Lake and Lake Bellaire are all connected by rivers and smaller lakes in a waterway known as the Chain of Lakes. Happily, the chain is navigable by pontoon or similar watercraft. Spend the day tubing behind your boat and enjoying other watersports on these deep-blue lakes, or putz along taking in the shoreline view. Tying up at the Dockside on Torch Lake for a burger and a beer is always a popular activity. Don’t have a pontoon? SMALL TOWNS, BIG CHARM This region of lakes, rivers, forests and old-fashioned downtowns is made for vacations. BY ELIZABETH EDWARDS

ALDEN

Lovely little Alden on Torch Lake is filled with boutiques, cafes, a specialty spice store, an old-fashioned general store and even a wine bar. A sandy-bottomed swimming area on Torch Lake is adjacent to the downtown boat launch. Raise a glass to a great collection of Northern Michigan craft brews at the Torch Lake Beer Co. visitalden.com

BELLAIRE

The grand old Antrim County Courthouse presides over this charming town that straddles the banks of Intermediate River and sits between Lake Bellaire and Intermediate Lake—so yes, think fabulous watersports. Find a lively shopping district and four-season Shanty Creek Resort here. For a small town, the night life is hopping with Short’s Brewing Company, Hello Vino wine bar, Mammoth Distilling and Bee Well Meadery & Cider. bellairechamber.org

CENTRAL LAKE

This sweet town, located where Hanley Lake meets Intermediate Lake under the bridge, has an Up North vibe—kicked up when Mammoth Distilling opened its doors several years ago. Dinner at the venerable Rowe Inn should be on your must-do list, and don’t miss a meal at the stately Blue Pelican Inn—better yet, take a room there. centrallaketownship.org

CHARLEVOIX

The fabulously charming downtown on Lake Charlevoix is brimming with galleries, boutiques and great restaurants. East Park is a hub of outdoor concerts, festivals and farmers markets. With Lake Michigan on one side and Round Lake on the other, stunning beaches and a first-class marina, this city is for water worshippers. Watching boats pass under the drawbridge is a major past-time here, as is drinking great craft beer in front of a stellar Lake Charlevoix view at Bridge Street Tap Room. visitcharlevoix.com

EAST JORDAN

With a bounty of Lake Charlevoix and Jordan River shoreline, this lovely city combines outdoor sports with fun downtown shops and eateries. Watch for a new sculpture Art Walk along city streets this summer. ejchamber.org

ELK RAPIDS

Wedged between Elk Lake and Lake Michigan, this town is a spot of heaven. Find your place on a golden-sand Lake Michigan beach, check out the boats in the 270-slip marina, browse the boutiques and galleries downtown, explore one of the North’s most beautiful library settings, then fill up at one of this town’s awesome eateries—including the new American House Wood Fired Pizza. elkrapidschamber.org

ELLSWORTH

Tucked on the northernmost point of the Chain of Lakes, this charmer of a village on Ellsworth Lake has a public park with a fishing pier, labyrinth garden and Michigan’s largest public archery range. villageofellsworth.com

GAYLORD

This charming town is the gateway for viewing the elk that roam the Pigeon River Country State Forest. Find an alpine vibe thanks to Gaylord’s relationship with twin town Pontresina, Switzerland. With four-season resorts, Treetops and Otsego, and surrounded by more than 100,000 acres of state forest, Gaylord is an outdoor sports mecca. Two breweries (Snowbelt Brewing Co. and Big Buck Brewery) and a handful of intimate pubs make the day’s end part of the adventure. gaylordmichigan.net

GRAYLING

Surrounded by an abundance of public land and headquarters for two of Michigan’s greatest rivers, the Au Sable and Manistee, Grayling is a four-season outdoor sports hub. The stand of virgin white and red pine forest at Hartwick Pines State Park and the annual AuSable River Canoe Marathon are standout attractions. Paddle Hard Brewing jibes with classic eat/drink spots like Dawson & Stevens, a '50s-style diner. grayling-mi.com 2021 MYNORTH

SIP LIKE A LOCAL Take a Torch Lake beverage tour, visit an island brewery and hang out at beloved small-town pubs. BY CARLY SIMPSON

A TORCH LAKE TOUR

Against the breathtaking backdrop of Torch Lake, a tasting tour is a winning day. With two breweries, a distillery and multiple wineries and cideries, the Torch Lake Tour has something for everyone. Find a map at torchlaketour.com. Starting in Williamsburg, Townline Ciderworks sits on an expansive property with wide-open orchard views and plenty of outdoor seating. Ciders range from dry to sweet and everything in between. Not far from Townline, the industrial-chic distillery and tasting room at Ethanology in Elk Rapids has live music and cocktails resembling works of art. Owners Nick and Geri Lefebre source ingredients from local farmers to provide flavor profiles that encompass the Torch Lake area. New in Elk Rapids, Short’s Brewing Company is welcoming guests to its indoor tap room at The Pull Barn, and Old Mission Eats food truck is slinging good eats onsite spring through summer. Heading north, don’t miss WaterFire Vineyards on the west side of Torch Lake in Kewadin, the first certified sustainable vineyard in the Midwest. The property’s name pays homage to Torch Lake—water, referring to the lake, and fire, referring to the torch-shape of the lake. Royal Farms on US-31 in Ellsworth is a cherry-filled oasis, complete with a wine tasting room and market with homemade baked goods. Bier’s Inwood Brewery, also on US31 (about seven miles south of downtown Charlevoix), is tucked in a white Victorian home behind the bright red schoolhouse that’s home to Bier Art Gallery and Pottery Studio. The brewery features 12 taps along with cider and wine. While not an official stop on the Torch Lake Tour, downtown Charlevoix has several great spots to enjoy a bevie including Bridge Street Taproom with its 32 taps of Michigan brews and bistro-style menu (hello, smoked brisket nachos), and The Cantina Tacos & Tequila where the bar is home to a wide selection of artisan and small-batch tequilas. Town House Bar, The Villager Pub and East Park Tavern are also favorite hangouts. Now, going south on the east side of Torch Lake, swing by Cellar 1914 in Central Lake. It boasts a winery and tasting room on a farm owned by the same family since 1914. In nearby Bellaire, grab a bite at the well-loved Short’s Brewing Company and when you’re finished, sip across the street at the equally tasty Bee Well Mead & Cider and Hello Vino. Also not an official stop on the Torch Lake Tour, but a fun destination, Mammoth Distilling has

tasting rooms in Central Lake and Bellaire (Traverse City and Bay Harbor, too, if you’re traveling that way). Not far from downtown Bellaire sits Torch Lake Cellars, where wines are named after local attractions, like Sandbar Chardonnay. Continuing south, your last stop is in the quaint town of Alden at the downtown tasting room Crushin’ It at Vista Ridge Vineyards. Designated drivers are always necessary. If you need a shuttle, check out the Brew Bus (tcbrewbus.com), Road Runner Tours (roadrunnermi.com) and Traverse City Wine & Beer Tours (wineandbeertours.com).

I-75 DRINK DESTINATIONS

Gaylord and Grayling are both set off Interstate 75, and both are home to several beloved breweries and bars. Grayling has two breweries and a brewpub: Rolling Oak Brewing Co. (rustic vibes; patio with food truck), Dead Bear Brewing Co. (classic log building; 21 taps; large food menu) and Paddle Hard Brewing (paddler heaven; artisan flatbread pizzas; lots of Michigan beers). Spike’s Keg O Nails makes a mean Bloody Mary—the house-made mix is so good they sell it to go in a jug—and Ray’s BBQ, Brews & Blues is a favorite for its outdoor seating on the Au Sable River, chicken wings and 30 beer taps. Gray Rock Pub & Grub is the place for karaoke and pool. In Gaylord, Snowbelt Brewing Co. is serving up great beer in a cozy setting. Garage doors open up to downtown’s bustling Main Street and the food menu includes an intriguing Mac Waffle—tater tots and mac 'n' cheese pressed together on a waffle iron and served with jalapeño ranch. Next door at Taproom 32 there are local microbrews, craft cocktails and a nice wine selection, plus sushi, small plates and more good eats. Nearby on Wisconsin Avenue, Big Buck Brewery is known for “big brews, big tastes and big stuffed heads on the wall.” (With a name like that, you should know what to expect.) Bearded Dogg Lounge and Pine Squirrel are also local faves. For a beer trail map, visit gaylordmichigan.net.

SIPPIN’ ON ISLAND TIME

Beaver Island is a must-visit for its miles of sandy shoreline, two historic lighthouses and super chill vibes. It’s also home to Whiskey Point Brewing Company. Have a cold beer or a glass of wine while you look out at Paradise Bay and, yeah, it’ll feel like paradise.

The Little Traverse Conservancy owns or manages almost two-dozen natural areas in the Charlevoix region where leashed dogs are allowed. Check out landtrust.org for the list. The Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy also owns and manages six natural areas in Antrim County, most of which allow leashed dogs. Antrim Creek Natural Area includes a mile of Lake Michigan frontage made for glorious dog walks. Check out gtrlc.org for more specifics. At Grass River Natural Area, located north of Alden, leashed dogs are allowed on the Algonquin and Rail trails (grassriver.org). And you are free

to walk your dog on the Little Traverse Wheelway, as well as the Boyne City to Charlevoix Trail.

ANTRIM/CHARLEVOIX/OTSEGO/CRAWFORD PARKS

All of the state, county and city parks in the Antrim/Charlevoix/Otsego/ Crawford region are dog-friendly, though dogs are not permitted at swimming beaches. Dogs are welcome on the several miles of Lake Michigan beach, as well as on the 0.7-mile hiking trail at Mt. McSauba Recreational Area (find great sunsets, too!). Headed to a winery, distillery, brewery or cafe with outdoor seating? Chances are there is seating in a dog-friendly area. Call ahead to verify.

LODGING FOR EVERYONE

An array of fun stays await you in the Charlevoix area. BY ELIZABETH EDWARDS

HISTORIC STAYS

The recent reopening of the Hotel Earl (hotelearl.com) in downtown Charlevoix shines a spotlight on the historic-style lodging in this area. The hotel, originally designed in the last century by the famed local designer Earl Young—known for his genius stonemasonry—joins the landmark Weathervane Terrace Inn & Suites (weathervane-chx.com) as tributes to Young. In Charlevoix, several homes designed by Earl Young are also available for rent (mushroomhouses.com). Complementing the Earl Young lodging are a slew of charming Victorianera inns, vintage lodges and mom ’n’ pop resorts scattered throughout Charlevoix (visitcharlevoix.com), East Jordan (ejchamber.org) and Bellaire (bellairechamber.org). In Grayling, the Hanson House, built in 1890 and once the home of lumber baron Rasmus Hanson, has lovely gardens, antique furniture, and offers a candlelit breakfast (hansonhousebandb.com).

EARL YOUNG’S WHIMSICAL HOMES Learn about the unique stone buildings scattered through Charlevoix's downtown. BY ELIZABETH EDWARDS

MUSHROOM HOUSE TOUR: Board a GEM car with tour guide Edith Pair (or one of her employees) for a relaxing cruise through the Charlevoix neighborhoods where Young built his homes. Pair’s commentary is lively and informative. mushroomhousetours.com WALKING, BUS OR PRIVATE VEHICLE TOUR: To set up a tour, contact the Charlevoix Historical Society. The photo book, “Mushroom Houses of Charlevoix,” also available from the society, is a great place to start your Earl Young tour. chxhistory.com 100

Earl Young built and designed 26 homes and four businesses in Charlevoix between 1918 and the early 1950s, all from boulders he collected while exploring the shoreline and forests in the area. Allowing the shape of the rocks to determine each building’s style, the homes are reminiscent of Tolkien’s Middle Earth, with touches like wavy roofs and chimneys that look like snow is melting from them. The homes are sometimes known as “Hobbit Houses,” while others refer to them as the “Mushroom Houses" for their squat, organic appearance. Check out these two ways to get acquainted with Earl Young’s homes.

fabulous beaches OF SOUTHERN SLEEPING BEAR Escape to these secluded stretches of sand and waves tucked away in the 10,000 acres of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore that line the Benzie County shoreline. BY EVAN PERRY

AKA Otter Creek Beach, this beach is near the mouth of Otter Creek, which gently empties into Lake Michigan. The creek’s shallow water is ideal for splash-happy kids and great for little adventurers who choose to wade upriver and into the belly of the forest. Find plenty of sand to park the cooler and beach chairs. From Empire, drive south on M-22 and turn right onto Esch Road. Unpaved parking, basic facilities. Road to Esch will be closed for a bit this summer, though the goal is to finish construction before "peak summer." Beachgoers are advised to seek alternate beach during construction. 106

PETERSON ROAD BEACH

Splitting Esch Road and Platte River Point, Peterson Road beach offers plenty of sand, a grandstand of beach grass and a bounty of elbow room. Just east of Platte River Campground, turn off M-22 onto the unpaved (and narrow) Peterson Road and follow it to Lake Michigan. Unpaved parking, basic facilities, short walk to the beach.

PLATTE RIVER POINT BEACH

Find this beauty down the road from the Platte River Campground at the mouth of the Platte River. This finish line for Platte River tubers and rowers means a bustling parking lot, but you’re a short walk away from bathing in the shallows of the river or taking a plunge into Lake Michigan. Perfect for kids, and views of the Empire Bluffs certainly don’t hurt. Take Lake Michigan Road off M-22 near Platte Lake; drive straight to Lake Michigan. Paved parking, picnic tables, basic facilities.

Platte River Point Beach TIESMA ROAD BEACH

Trek to Tiesma if you are seeking seclusion. The beach is along the same strip of shoreline as Platte River Point and Peterson Road, yet it is unmarked and under the radar. From Platte River Campground, take Lake Michigan Road north, turn right on Isle View Drive and drive till the road ends. Short walk to the beach through soft sand. No facilities, dirt road parking.

Park passes are required at all beaches within the National Lakeshore. Buy a pass online or at the Philip A. Hart Visitor Center in Empire. nps.gov/slbe

The viewers of Good Morning America chose it as “The Most Beautiful Place in America”. It features sandy beaches, sparkling waters, and towering dunes, preserved and protected by the National Park Service. Others claim to be close to it. We don’t. It surrounds us. Paddle into Northwoods’ splendor on any or all of these four rivers. BY ELIZABETH EDWARDS

BETSIE RIVER

This spunky, twisting, churning river isn’t for beginners or even intermediate paddlers. But if you’re an experienced paddler, this is your river. The Betsie’s navigable waters start at Grass Lake State Forest Campground in Thompsonville and the river empties into Lake Michigan’s Betsie Bay in Frankfort. OUTFITTERS: Betsie River Canoes and Campground, facebook.com/brcanoesandcampground; Vacation Trailer Park, vacationtrailer.com

PINE RIVER

A federally designated Wild and Scenic River, the Pine is the fastest river in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. Winding through a deep, forested valley carved eons ago by glaciers, the Pine River is your next great adventure. OUTFITTERS: Pine River Paddlesports Center and Campground, thepineriver.com; Horina Canoe & Kayak Rental, horinasprcanoe.com

PLATTE RIVER

From the swift, chilly waters of the Upper Platte to the warm, slo-mo Lower Platte, this 29-mile-long river is made for paddling and floating fun. Arriving at the river mouth on Lake Michigan’s stunning Platte Bay is the trip’s grand finale. OUTFITTERS: Riverside Canoes in Honor, canoemichigan.com; The Honor Trading Post, canoeplatteriver.com

MANISTEE RIVER

Also a federally designated Wild and Scenic River, the Manistee begs for at least intermediate skills in the upper section, known as the Little Manistee. But downriver, where it becomes the Big Manistee, the slow current welcomes beginners and families, and frequent sandbars invite swim breaks. SIP LIKE A LOCAL From Northwoods taverns to hip breweries and distilleries, this region is full of good spirits. BY CARLY SIMPSON

CRAFT BEVVIES

The newest brewery in the region, Five Shores, opened in January 2020 bringing award-winning brewmaster Oliver Roberts, formerly the head brewer at Wolverine State Brewing Co. in Ann Arbor, and business partner, Matt Demorest, to Beulah. The duo is serving up coastal vibes in the renovated Quonset-style building downtown with a robust list of craft beers, along with cider, wine, cocktails and shareable eats (the German-style pretzel is massive, and it’s coated with everything bagel seasoning, so it’s obviously delish). Five Shores is, of course, in good company, joining sudsy stalwarts such as Stormcloud Brewing Company in Frankfort, Jamesport and Ludington Bay brewing companies in Ludington, North Channel in Manistee, Clam Lake Beer Company in Cadillac and Lake Ann Brewing in Lake Ann. Each establishment has its own beer profile, but they all share conviviality, great live music and outdoor seating. For creative beers to go (think picnic or post-beach BBQ), swing by Starving Artist Brewing Co., a barn-turned-brewery in Ludington. With a designated driver, you can create your own mini wine and cider tour in the region. Here’s the lineup. Stop 1: Northern Natural Cider House & Winery in Kaleva, known for its USDA-certified organic ciders. Stop 2: Douglas Valley Winery in Manistee, where the tasting room is a renovated 1800s bunkhouse that was used by passengers on the Manistee and North-Eastern Railroad. Stop 3: Love Wines Winery in Ludington for a range of sweet to dry small-batch blends. Defying categories, St. Ambrose Cellars in Beulah's countryside, is a fun destination offering something for everyone—beer, wine, cider, mead, yard games and a food truck. Also tucked in the region’s countryside, Iron Fish Distillery in Thompsonville boasts farm-to-flask spirits, each handcrafted on the 120-acre farm surrounded by forest. Though Iron Fish is a bit off the beaten path, aka a scenic dirt road, it’s a must-visit food and entertainment hub for all ages.

THE CLASSICS

When the evening calls for laidback Up North vibes, make your way to these long-loved watering holes with kicked-up tavern food: Lumberjacks Bar & Grill in Honor (great weekly specials), Jodi’s Tangled Antler in Beulah (prime karaoke spot), The Painted Lady Saloon in Manistee (the town’s oldest operating bar) and Sportman’s Irish Pub in Ludington (traditional sports bar for when ya gotta catch a game).

LODGING FOR EVERYONE Your Up North getaway starts here. BY ELIZABETH EDWARDS

A ROOF OVER YOUR HEAD (AND SO MUCH MORE!)

This is a region of Up North cabins, Victorian-era bed and breakfasts and beautiful resorts. Ludington and Manistee are particularly known for their lumber-era mansions that have become inns and bed and breakfasts. Historic resorts include Watervale Inn (watervaleinn.com) in Arcadia and Portage Point Resort (portagepointresort.com) in Onekama. Find thoroughly modern digs at Arcadia Bluffs Golf Club in Arcadia (arcadiabluffs.com), Crystal Mountain in Thompsonville (crystalmountain.com), Caberfae Peaks in Cadillac (caberfaepeaks.com) and numerous other resorts and hotels.

BACK TO NATURE

In a region flush with state forests, state parks and a national park, you know the camping is going to be awesome. Add to that an abundance of well-kept, homey private campgrounds and you’ll always have a place to pitch a tent—or hook up your RV. In Benzie (visitbenzie.com), Manistee (visitmanisteecounty. com), Ludington (pureludington.com) and Cadillac (cadillacmichigan.com), you’ll find rustic sites, backcountry sites, sites within a stone’s throw of inland lakes and Lake Michigan and sites on rivers that you can reach by canoe or kayak. Get packing! And don’t forget the marshmallows …

HAVE A DOG? HAVE FUN!

Your best friend has plenty of room to ramble in this region of forests and beaches. Here are some popular Fido-friendly spots for outdoor fun. Remember, Michigan law requires dogs to be on 6-foot leashes in public. BY ALLISON JARRRELL

SLEEPING BEAR DUNES

There are several places in Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore where dogs aren’t permitted due to sensitive ecosystems, such as piping plover nesting areas, so please be attentive to “no pet” signs. In the Benzie County portion of the park, pups are welcome in the Platte River Campground, as well as on all trails and beaches from the Platte River Campground north to Peterson Road, and from Esch Road north to the Lakeshore boundary near Empire.

MANISTEE

Enjoy some sand and sun with your pup at an array of dog-friendly beaches in Manistee County, including Lake Michigan’s North Beach Access, the dog park at First Street Beach, Magoon Creek, Portage Point Beach and Fifth Street Beach (outside the swimming area). North Point Beach in Onekama is also pet-friendly.

LUDINGTON

The Ludington area is full of dog-friendly outdoor rec opportunities—your furry friend will love checking out Ludington State Park and the Nordhouse Dunes (just be sure your pup isn’t in the swimming areas). Also, not to miss in Ludington, the beloved Loomis Street Dog Beach.

If you’re headed to Cadillac with your canine companion in tow, head to Fred Meijer White Pine Trail State Park. This 92-mile linear trail state park runs from Cadillac to Comstock Park and is paved with asphalt, except for a 30-mile stretch between Sand Lake and Big Rapids, which is natural ballast and hard-packed gravel. (Note: dogs aren’t permitted in buildings or swimming areas.)

VERY CHERRY BENZIE Benzie County has a long, proud history of cherry farming that is still carried on today. Taste this delicious heritage these three ways. BY ELIZABETH EDWARDS

THE CHERRY HUT, BEULAH

What started in 1922 as an orchard-to-table business still thrives today—under the smiling face of Cherry Jerry who greets folks from a sign outside this restaurant on US-31. Open only in the summer, The Cherry Hut features cherry dishes including cherry chicken salad, cherry salsa, cherry preserves and, of course, cherry pie fresh from the oven! Lots of cherry goodies are also for sale at Cherry Hut Products, a second retail location in nearby Benzonia, or check out the online shop. cherryhut.com

North Star Organics has been growing certified organic cherries for 20 years. They welcome you to pick your own during a specified 10-day period during harvest—usually in mid to late July. Follow them on Facebook to plan your U-Pick. facebook.com/northstarorganics

SORENSON’S FRUIT STAND, BEULAH
