Sleeping Bear Dunes

Voyageurs penned the first written descriptions of Michigan’s glimmering white sand dunes, and the vast beauty of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is still being newly discovered. After Good Morning America viewers voted this park the Most Beautiful Place in America, visits to the park in 2012 hit a record high, reaching some 1.5 million visitors. But even if the park’s reputation is no longer quiet, it’s still easy to find solitude and untouched beauty amid the 71,000-acre national park. Most notably, the park boasts a 35-mile stretch of Lake Michigan coastline, two islands, and many dune-sheltered beaches dubbed the Great Lake’s best. The southern tier of the national park, which spreads along the Benzie County coast, offers some of the most beautiful and least-traveled hikes and overlooks. A hidden-lagoon feel prevails at Otter Creek, a local favorite where Esch Road ends at Lake Michigan—perfect for an afternoon picnic. Many people paddle or float to the beach on the sleepy current of the Platte River. The outing is especially memorable during the river’s late-summer salmon run—when paddlers can see dozens or even hundreds of Coho pushing upstream.

Everybody likes to float in the warm shallows where the river empties into the lake. The beach near the river mouth is a popular nesting spot, too, for the rare piping plover, carefully protected by the park. The adjacent Platte River Campground, with more than 175 roomy campsites sheltered by towering pines, is top on campers’ lists. The park offers RV, tent and hike-in spots and—unlike many national parks—takes reservations. Book early, though, because sites fill quickly for the peak summer months. The White Pine Backcountry Camp (make reservations at Platte River Campground) keeps you close to Lake Michigan and scores nice solitude. Hike two miles on the Platte Plains hiking trail to reach six quiet sites just over a low dune from the lake. For a lovely and quiet day at the beach, head to the Old Indian hiking trail, near the park’s southern boundary. The trail traces through a peaceful, open forest on gentle terrain and leads you to an overlook before continuing on to the shoreline (about 1.5 miles from car to beach). Also, take in one of many ranger-led tours in the Platte River Campground to hear the evocative Native American tale of Sleeping Bear and deets about the area’s complex nature and geology. 231.326.5134, nps.gov/slBe/. Bike Betsie Valley Trail: This 22-mile multi-use

trail meanders along the Betsie River and the beautiful Crystal Lake shoreline, and through birch, maple, ash and evergreen forests. Watch for wildlife along the trail, paved from Frankfort into Beulah, with an aggregate trail surface ideal for mountain bikes between Beulah and Thompsonville. A popular ride involves parking at the Frankfort trailhead and riding to Beulah and back, about 20 miles roundtrip. Bonus: you can call to arrange for the Benzie Bus (231.325.3000) to pick up your posse and your bikes at a trailhead and drop you off anywhere along the trail, so you can ride one-way back to your car. Big M: One of the first Nordic trail systems in the United States, the Big M today lays out 50 miles of trails that roll through the Manistee National Forest. Most are singletrack paths and all are marvelous gifts to mountain bikers and cross-country skiers. The dense forest makes for a cool ride through the Udell Hills. Four distinct segments range from easy to difficult. M-22, from Frankfort north: One of the region’s most scenic drives, M-22’s wide shoulders, smooth pavement and stunning views also make for great biking. Ride early to avoid car traffic in peak summer travel times, and savor the stretch that hugs the shoreline of aquamarine Crystal Lake as you pass century-old resorts and gorgeous vistas. For a beach break on the big lake, take the turn toward the iconic and muchphotographed Point Betsie Lighthouse.

Photo Spots 5Platte Bay

Cattails cluster along the Platte River’s shores, alive with butterflies and dragonflies, then give way to sugary sands and photogenic waters at the mouth of Platte Bay. From Frankfort, take M-22 north 12 miles to Lake Michigan Road, and turn left to the end, to reach this birders’ favorite.

Arcadia Overlook

The boardwalk offers ever-changing perspectives as you climb the 210 steps to the top of the Arcadia overlook. The newly built top deck offers a great place to toast—’er shoot—the view from one of Lake Michigan’s highest points, which looks down upon one of its deepest. Located two miles north of Arcadia on M-22.

Elberta Bluffs

You may capture some hang gliders in your photo at this favorite take-off point for soaring in the wind. Wildflowers and dune grass dot the sandy bluffs that tower 400 feet above Lake Michigan. From Elberta village, take Furnace St. to Bye St., turn left to reach the bluff.

Manistee Lighthouse Pier

Perhaps the most symbolic icon of the Victorian Port City, the North Pierhead Lighthouse is also a photographer favorite. Take a stroll along the catwalk, added in 1927, to the 39-foot-tall light built of cast iron. From Highway 31 in Manistee, take Memorial Drive west toward Lake Michigan and watch signs for 5th Avenue Beach.

Mouth of Pere Marquette River

The Pere Marquette River meanders over some 180 scenic miles and then spills into the Pere Marquette Lake. Capture gorgeous shots of the river mouth from the eastern bank, where Buttersville Park offers high bluff views of the Ludington North Breakwater lighthouse. Find it on S. Trails Betsie River Pathway

This 10-mile hiking and mountain bike trail is located within the cool, dense hardwoods and pines of the Pere Marquette State Forest in Thompsonville. Immerse yourself in nature on this off-the-beaten-path trail, situated six miles west of Thompsonville via M-115, King Road and Longstreet Road.

Ludington State Park

To find enchanting trails along rivers and lakes, you can’t beat this 5,300-acre park with exploration options aplenty. For a familyfriendly hike, try the half-mile long Skyline Trail, running over a boardwalk toward memorable views of Lake Michigan and grassy dunes. Lake Ann Pathway

Challenge yourself on this 3.5-mile rollercoaster of trails. Pedal or amble past Shavenaugh and Mary’s Lakes to the reward of the gentle stretches along the beautiful Platte River and Lake Ann shorelines. Watch for indigenous wildflowers like the lady’s slipper orchids along the way. From U.S. 31 and Reynolds Rd., go north on Reynolds about 4 miles. Parking on east side of road.

Hikes preserved into perpetuity

The Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy has protected more than 5,232 acres of Benzie and Manistee County’s land and viewscape. Open for your gentle use are trails like the Green Point Nature Reserve, where wildflowers and native plants line three miles of looped trails. Another must-wander is the massive 3,600acre C.S. Mott Preserve, where trails of varied lengths wind through shady evergreens, orchards and flower-filled meadows, and some reach mesmerizing bluff-top views of Lake Michigan. GTRLC.ORG.

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore

The Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore presents more than 100 miles of designated trails through woodland, wetland, meadow, shoreline and sand dune terrain unique to the region. Several trails explore the crest of an ancient shoreline—now high above the water—formed by glaciers. The Otter Creek loop, a 4.6mile segment of the Platte Plains Hiking Trail System, is relatively flat and a favorite for wildlife watching along the shores of Otter Creek and Otter Lake. Elberta: Tucked between Betsie Bay and a Lake Michigan bluff, Elberta’s claim to fame is its gorgeous, Great Lake beach and a few eclectic shops. Check out the Solstice Festival, June 22, noon to 2 a.m. and, at the height of summer, Elberta presents the annual Arts and Crafts fair, July 20.

Frankfort: Elegant, Victorian-era homes sit along maple-lined streets that dead-end at Lake Michigan and a wide, golden beach. Summertime bustles with activities including the Rotary Revue Talent Show—June 7; Frankfort Carnival, with a craft fair and Antique Vehicle/Muscle Car Show—June 12–16; a 4th of July Celebration with parade, sand-sculpture contest, and fireworks on the beach; and the Fishing Frenzy, Aug. 23–25. Honor: Said to be the birthplace of Michigan salmon, since the state’s first salmon were planted in the Platte River in 1966, this town’s activities and its main festival centers on the river. Celebrate the big fish at the National Coho Festival, featuring a parade, carnival, car show, arts and crafts show and smoked fish contest, Aug. 24–25. Ludington: Victorian homes, some converted to luxurious bed-and-breakfasts, characterize this town of pretty storefronts and two historic lighthouses. There’s also plenty of festival action: the Freedom Festival, July 4 weekend; West Shore Art Fair (July 6–7), Suds on the Shore Craft Beer and Wine Tasting Festival (Aug. 17) and ongoing events like Friday Night Live and Thursday evening movies in the park.

Manistee: Manistee is known for its Victorian downtown, Lake Michigan port and position amid the vast Manistee National Forest. The Manistee National Forest Festival, launched in 1936, combines the best of town, lake and forest with its parade, juried art show and more. Hops and Props, combining craft beer tasting and classic wooden boats, runs Sept. 14; and each summer Saturday brings festive downtown fun with a farmers market, live music and buskers along River Street.

Onekama: Tucked between Lake Michigan and Portage Lake, lovely Onekama is a long-time vacation haven for both resort-goers and charter fishermen. Festivals center around water, and Onekama Days, Aug. 2–4, is the biggie, with parades, craft shows, fireworks and other celebrations of summer.
