Beaches 5 Elk Rapids
Veterans Memorial Park is Elk Rapids’ main locale for swimming, sunning and living it up. The location is especially nice for families, as the waters here are shallow and warm, and kids love playing where the mouth of Elk River empties out on the beach. Other features: basketball courts, tennis courts, picnic tables, play area, grills, and trees for finding respite from the sun. On River Street in downtown Elk Rapids. ELKRAPIDSCHAMBER.ORG.
ANJANETTE MERRIWEATHER
Charlevoix
Lake Michigan Beach in Charlevoix is a popular white-sand oasis with all the amenities: lifeguards, concession stands, restrooms, picnic areas. It’s also the place to catch a gorgeous sunset, and is home to great rock hunting—especially for Petoskey stones. The beach is a short walk from downtown Charlevoix along the Pine River Channel. CHARLEVOIX.ORG.
Torch Lake Township
Despite being Michigan’s second-largest inland lake—and one of the state’s most lovely lakes at that—Torch Lake doesn’t offer many public access sites, and none of them are traditional sugar-sand beaches like those on nearby Lake Michigan. But if you’re looking to dip your toes into these gorgeous waters, the pretty little beach at William K. Good Day Park in Torch Lake Township is the place to be, with pavilions, picnic tables, a public boat launch and swimming area. Find it at the eastern end of Public Dock Road, on US 31 just a few miles south of M-88. Call Torch Lake Township Clerk for info. 231.599.2036.
East Jordan
Elm Pointe, formerly the pioneer homestead of the Monroe family, is one of East Jordan’s loveliest parks. Monroe Creek winds its way through the 11 acres of parkland, which includes beach frontage and a picnic area
MyNorth.com/vg-ca
on the south arm of Lake Charlevoix. The historic Monroe home still stands on the property (available as event space for weddings and gatherings), as does the East Jordan Portside Art and Historical Museum, open (with free admission) on weekends in June and Thursdays through Sundays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in July and August. 1787 N M-66, EAST JORDAN, EASTJORDANCITY.ORG.
Alden
Among the select few public access sites on Torch Lake is this cute little patch of frontage and sandy-bottomed swimming spot in Alden, next to the pier. You won’t find volleyball nets or lifeguards, but you’ll likely have it all to yourself—and you’ll be just seconds from the shops and eateries downtown. With the shoreline here facing straight west, this is the perfect place for a sunset dip. Find it in downtown Alden at the sharp dog-leg on South East Torch Lake Drive (County Highway 593). Get on the Water Lake Charlevoix: There’s a reason this beautiful Northern Michigan lake placed second only to Lake Tahoe in USA Today’s readers poll of America’s best lakes. A boat tour of Lake Charlevoix will not only give you a beautiful day on the water but access to three of the North’s best small towns: East Jordan at the end of the lake’s south arm; Boyne City at the eastern edge of the north arm; and Charlevoix on the lake’s western edge. A shallow ledge, which outlines the entire lake, makes it ideal for anchoring and relaxing the day away. Find rentals at Sunset Watersports. 231.932.1800, sunsetwatersports.com.
CARLY PASZEK, SHEA HADDAD
Torch Lake: Though Torch Lake wasn’t voted best anything in any recent polls, many locals swear Torch is Michigan’s most spectacular lake. And on sunny days, when the turquoise waters are reminiscent of the Caribbean, it’s hard to argue with them. For those who love to socialize, hanging out on the sandbars at the lake’s south end is a summertime tradition; those seeking a little more peace and quiet will find the lake’s northern stretches more their speed. Find everything from pontoon to powerboat rentals at Dewitt Marine near Bellaire. 6509 Crystal Springs Rd., Bellaire, 231.377.6611, dewittmarine.com.
Lake Michigan Cruises: The inland lakes of Northern Michigan offer plenty to do, but nothing beats the romance of the “Big Lake” to the west. A sunset cruise on Lake Michigan is a particularly breathtaking experience. Keweenaw Excursions offers two-hour sunset cruises aboard the 110-foot Keweenaw Star. The boat departs
MyNorth.com/vg-ca
from downtown Charlevoix and cruises Round Lake before peacefully sailing into Lake Michigan underneath the Charlevoix drawbridge. Reservations required. 109 Bridge Park Dr., Charlevoix, 231.237.9365, keweenawexcursions.com.
Jordan River: For canoe and kayak enthusiasts, there are few more beautiful spots to paddle than the scenic Jordan River Valley. The high bluffs that surround the river reach nearly 500 feet in some places, and are particularly gorgeous during fall color season. Navigating the waters of the Jordan River doesn’t require a ton of expertise, but complete beginners may prefer a guided group trip with Jordan Valley Outfitters, which offers tours and a full line of kayak, canoe and tubing rentals. 311 N. Lake St., East Jordan, 231.536.0006, jvoutfitters.com.
Upper Chain of Lakes: The 75 miles of lakes and interconnected waterways that make up the Chain of Lakes is a paddler’s paradise. Though the lower chain boasts the larger, flagship lakes like Torch and Elk, the underrated upper chain offers a laid-back canoeing or kayaking experience on six smaller, intimate lakes. Experienced paddlers can make a journey out of them all, though exploring smaller sections from one of the many put-in sites also makes for some great trips. One note: There are no canoe or kayak rental shops along the upper chain, so if you’re not bringing your own gear, hit up Jordan Valley Outfitters in East Jordan on your way to the water. 311 N. Lake St., East Jordan, 231.536.0006, jvoutfitters.com. MyNorth 2013 Vacation! 7

Biking
MyNorth.com/vg-ca
Cycling For serious road warriors, your ticket to one of the best rides in the region is simply to follow the eastern shore of beautiful Torch Lake, which, at 19 miles, ranks as Michigan’s longest inland lake. The tree-lined route along East Torch Lake Drive offers relatively flat terrain and intermittent views of Torch’s tropical-blue waters. The shoulder is less than generous at times, but assertive riders shouldn’t have any problem with traffic, even during peak tourist season. Our suggestion: Start your ride in the village of Alden on the southeast end of Torch, and bike 17 miles to Eastport at the top of the lake, where the beach at Barnes Park is a great place to spend the afternoon before heading back south.
4Grass River Natural Area
ANJANETTE MERRIWEATHER, CARLY PASZEK, SHEA HADDAD
Cruising With nearly 26 miles of trails—almost all of them paved—the Little Traverse Wheelway (trailscouncil.org) makes exploring the region as easy as riding a bike. Not only does the trail allow you to pedal all the way from Charlevoix through Petoskey and onward to Harbor Springs, but most of the journey will put you within sight of the beautiful Lake Michigan coastline. On your trip you’ll find more than a half-dozen roadside parks to take in a picnic lunch, and numerous beaches with direct access to the water. Make Petoskey your midway point and you’ll have access to some of the region’s best restaurants and shopping. Find the Charlevoix trailhead, plus parking and restrooms, at Charlevoix Township Hall, 12491 Waller Road. For bike rentals nearby, try Revolution Bike & Boards. 102 MASON ST., CHARLEVOIX, 231.237.0900, REVOLUTIONBANDB.WEBS.COM.
Hike
A 1,400-acre Antrim County oasis and self-proclaimed “eco-guardian project,” Grass River offers visitors a peek into the upland, wetland and aquatic ecosystems of the Chain of Lakes. Seven miles of easy walking trails meander along meadows, woods and streams; one section of trail includes a wheelchair-accessible “perception pathway” for visitors with special needs. The interpretive center offers lots of classes and guided hikes, such as the weekly 1 p.m. “Sunday Stroll”—a leisurely walk led by a naturalist. 6500 ALDEN HWY.,
BELLAIRE, 231.533.8576, GRASSRIVER.ORG.
Jordan River Pathway
This rugged 18-mile trek winds through the wildly scenic Jordan River Valley, an 18,000acre swath of state-owned forestland. The tract has dramatic elevation changes and is home to the pristine Jordan River. This is a great destination for a weekend backpacking trip; stay overnight at Piney Bridge Campground, a rustic camping spot with 15 hike-in tent sites located about halfway along the trail. For an easy day hike, try the three-mile Deadman’s Loop. Find the main trailhead off Deadman’s Hill Road, six miles north of Alba on US 131. State Recreation Passport required. 989.732.3541, MICHIGANDNR.COM.
Coy Mountain Preserve
Many visitors overlook this pretty 1.4-mile hike, but it’s a treat worth seeking out. The 17-acre tract, tucked down a residential road near downtown Alden, encompasses a 140-foot ridge forested with virgin hardwoods. It’s the perfect spot to stretch your legs and search for wildflowers; come fall, the foliage is magnificent. From downtown Alden, follow Coy Street south for one-third of a mile; turn east on Valley Street. The preserve is two blocks in. VISITALDEN.COM. MyNorth 2013 Vacation! 9

Vacation! MOVIE THEATERS Rainy summer days are the perfect excuse to catch a matinee movie at a small-town theater— the sweet alternative to multi-screen, big-city cineplexes.
Elk Rapids: The Elk Rapids Cinema retains many of its historical details from when it first opened in 1940, and boasts the world’s largest black-light ceiling design. 205 rIver st., 231.264.8601, elkrapIdscInema.com.

Kids Fishing Pond: Little anglers will love tossing a line into Elk Rapids’ family friendly “Kids Pond,” stocked with smallmouth bass and steelhead. A boardwalk surrounding the pond provides easy access. Find the pond not far from downtown, off Dexter Street just below the spillway. elkrapIds.org. Raven Hill Discovery Center: This hands-on
science, history and art museum has activities and exhibits both indoors and out, making it a perfect kid-friendly day trip whatever the weather. Outdoor adventures include a music garden, wetlands boardwalk, pond, labyrinth, accessible treehouse and more; indoor attractions include a fiber studio, print shop, one-room schoolhouse and even a live animal room where kiddos can learn about native wildlife. Lots of classes, too; check online for schedule. 4737 fuller

for kids in the Torch Lake/Central Lake region. As the original location for the award-winning Brownwood Acres preserves and tart cherry juice company, this fivegeneration, family-owned enterprise is also home to a great gift shop and historic one-room schoolhouse. Make sure to check out the eclectic flea market each Sunday morning, where Brownwood’s longtime proprietress still makes homemade doughnuts every week. 2493 se torch lake dr., central lake, 231.544.3910, broWnWoodacres.com.
Charlevoix Fountain of Youth: This interac-
tive, heated fountain in Charlevoix’s East Park was designed specifically as a playscape for young children, featuring a safety-textured surface where water gushes, sputters and splashes in unpredictable patterns. The result is a squeal-inducing delight for little ones, who love to run around in the mini geysers. The fountain is open for playing every day between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m.; 9:30 p.m. starts the fountain’s nightly display, where the water is programmed to “dance” to a music and light show. Photo Spots earl young Hobbit Houses Scattered in the neighborhoods around Charlevoix are 30-some curious stone cottages built between 1918 and the mid-1970s by self-taught architect Earl Young. The buildings, which feature native fieldstone walls and irregular, sloping cedar-shake roofs, are affectionately referred to as the “Hobbit houses” for their quirky, earthy charm. Visit the Chamber of Commerce downtown for a self-guided walking tour map. 231.547.2101, CHARELVoIx.oRG.
deadman’s Hill A breathtaking overlook in the Jordan River Valley set some 435 feet above the river offering panoramic views of the entire region.
Beautiful any time of year, but particularly striking during fall color season. Located at the end of Deadman’s Hill Road, on the left as you head north on US 131, about six miles north of Alba.
chain of Lakes Photo opportunities abound on this 75-mile-long waterway consisting of 14 inland lakes and connecting rivers. The crown jewel of the chain is 19-mile-long Torch Lake—Michigan’s longest and second-largest inland lake. Canoeing the whole chain is possible with some portaging on the upper half; or boat the bottom half to see Torch Lake, Elk Lake and Lake Skegemog without ever leaving the water.

CARLEY PASZEK, ANJANETTE MERRIWEATHER
BEAVER ISLAND beaver Island is loved today for its wild, sandy beaches, island forests, and general seclusion—but it’s also home to an incredible, storied history. In the mid-1800s, the renegade mormon leader and self-anointed prophet james strang led 300 devotees to the island to establish an independent mormon kingdom in the middle of lake michigan. strang’s reign lasted a brief six years—he was assassinated in 1856—and his followers were evicted from the island shortly thereafter by the island’s non-mormon inhabitants. following strang’s death, Irish immigrants established a new enclave on the island, and by the late 1800s, some 95 percent of beaver Island residents actually counted themselves Irish. relics of both the mormon and Irish communities still survive today: the mormon colony’s former print shop is now a museum, and the island’s two Irish pubs (the shamrock and donegal danny’s) are the only establishments open year-round. of course, beyond the history, beaver Island offers plenty to make for a memorable trip, including a pair of historic lighthouses, charter fishing, rustic camping, remote beaches, and a biological station run by central michigan university. hiking the island’s extensive network of trails is a great way to explore the interior, but a day in a kayak will allow you to explore the shoreline, shipwrecks and many other smaller islands that make up the beaver Island archipelago (find rentals and guided trips through Inland seas school of kayaking; InlandseaskaYakIng.com). Whatever your adventure, budget for a full day, as the ferry ride to the island—across the 32 miles of beautiful open lake michigan waters—is two hours each way. beaverIsland.org.

Dining
Siren Hall: Seafood takes center stage here—oysters from both coasts, scallops, a wicked-good New England clam chowder—
but there’s also pasta, pizza, steak and other sophisticated offerings. An excellent wine list and lovely outdoor patio make this place ideal for lingering over drinks on balmy summer evenings. 151 River St., Elk Rapids, 231.264.6062, sirenhall.com.
Rowe Inn: It’s no stretch to say that this intimate, awardwinning, French-country-inspired establishment helped pioneer fine dining in Northwest Michigan. The Rowe was founded in the early 1970s with the mission to celebrate local foods—long before the “farm to table” ethos became a movement. French cooking techniques and traditions, a menu that shifts with the seasons, and a spotlight on Michigan’s rich culinary offerings make for an unforgettable—yet still Up North casual—dining experience. A must for foodies. 6303 East Jordan Rd., Ellsworth, 231.588.7351, roweinn.com.
The Lakeview at Shanty Creek: Spectacular sunset views
over Lake Bellaire is the proverbial cherry on top to dining at this upscale-casual restaurant at Shanty Creek Resort. The dinner menu focuses on flights of small plates, but does offer larger-portioned “complete plates” (rib-eye, salmon, pasta)—always with an eye toward locally procured ingredients and regional craft brews. Award-winning desserts and a great selection of creative after-dinner drinks. 5780 Shanty Creek Rd, Bellaire, 231.533.8621, shantycreek.com.
Lulu’s Bistro: Culinary Institute of America graduate Chef Michael Peterson trained in Paris before returning to his native Northern Michigan and opening this hip bistro near the bridge in downtown Bellaire. Elegant, seasonally inspired menu; smart wine list with many regional offerings; seating on the brick patio for outdoor dining. 213N. Bridge St., Bellaire, 231.533.5252, lulusbistro.com.
Pearl’s New Orleans Kitchen: Eclectic, Bayou-inspired Pearl’s celebrates the melting-pot flavors of Cajun-Creole cuisine: fried green tomatoes, jambalaya, blackened alligator, po’ boys, étoufée, crawfish and other authentic Southern specialties. In keeping with the laissez les bon temps rouler spirit, there’s also a great selection of festive cocktails—plus an entire menu devoted just to premium single-barrel and small-batch bourbons. 617 Ames St., Elk
TODD ZAWISTOWSKI
Rapids, 231.264.0530, magnumhospitality.com/pearls.
Cafe Esperance: This seasonal cafe tucked alongside a wine shop feels like a sweet European bistro, with a simple chalkboard menu, patio for dining al fresco, and dishes inspired by the region’s bounty (local farm produce; seafood from nearby John Cross fisheries). The wine list is practically endless—in addition to those listed on the menu, every bottle in the retail cellar is available for purchase with your meal, regardless of price. Reservations recommended. MyNorth.com/vg-ca
