The Good Stuff IF YOU ONLY HAVE A FEW DAYS IN LEELANAU DO NOT MISS: SUNSET AT PETERSON PARK: Lake michigan’s impressive expanse is laid out before you when you catch the evening color show from the bluff-top park. Or opt for a more intimate feel by heading down the narrow steps to the rock hound’s paradise-of-a-beach.
BEACH-WALK FOREVER: Roam the dreamy Lake michigan shoreline of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore; 35 miles of coast on the mainland and another 35 miles on two park-owned islands. NPS.GOV/SCBE.
FISHTOWN WALK: Stroll is how you explore fishtown, a one-of-a-kind enclave of weathered, repurposed fishing shanties turned shops and galleries along Leland’s river. Stop to pick up penny candy or savor gourmet whitefish alongside the falls gushing over the dam. FISHTOWNMI.ORG.
BARN TO BARN RUN: Dash past historic barns, knowing your $20 fee doesn’t just score you views of pastoral hills and stunning shorelines; it also helps preserve some of the historic cultural landscape—the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore’s 366 historic buildings. PHSB.ORG.

Vacation!
Beaches
A day at the beach is even sweeter when you’re within walking distance of supplies. A great beach read, shovel and pail and ice cream cones are all an easy stroll from these in-town beach beauties.
2. 1.
3. 1. Suttons Bay
Those who like to gradually enter the water will love Suttons Bay’s marina beach, a favorite for families and those just looking to float in the particularly warm shallows. A playground, tables and grills make it easy to stay through dinner. Better yet, walk to one of the local pubs noted for gourmet burgers and a casual vibe. 231.271.6703.
2. Glen Arbor/Glen Haven
Historic Glen Haven offers a full vacation in a single stop, starting with a beach you can’t beat anywhere in the Great Lakes—at least according to Florida professor Stephen Leatherman, a k a “Dr. Beach.” He ranked it at the top for coastal dunes, fine sand and view of the Manitou Islands. On-site museum and old-fashioned general store add to the fun. From Glen Arbor, 2 miles west on M-109.
ANGELA BROWN
3. Empire
Enchanting dune bluffs rise to the north and south of this wide swath of sandy beach, making it one of the area’s most popular. The amenities don’t hurt either. A restroom, playground, picnic tables and grills help families out. When the big lake’s
too chilly to dive into, cross the parking lot to the small inland (and warmer) South Bar Lake. Follow signs from downtown.
Lake Leelanau
Pick up a take-out picnic at NJ’s Grocery (the fresh-made samosas, perhaps) and head to this road-end local favorite beach. It’s a good spot for dropping in a line or launching a kayak, and then paddling the wildlife-filled channel connecting the north and south branches of Lake Leelanau. Head west from town on M-204 about a mile, right on Popp Rd.
Leland
North Beach is a favorite for those who like to walk for miles, stopping along the soft sand path to collect a Petoskey stone or locally prized Leland Blue. (Stay along the water line to avoid trespassing.) Find books, picnic fare and sand toys in downtown Leland. Take North Street west toward the lake, and then follow a short trail to the beach.
Omena
As close as an in-town beach can come to being a secret cove, this hidden gem
is found just past where the main road makes a sharp curve. Walk to pick up provisions at the old-timey general store. You feel away from it all, yet you are steps from waterfront dining and wine tasting. Sailboats often dock in the harbor, adding romance to your view. Off M-22 in Omena.
Northport
Haserot Park, Northport’s municipal beach, is located right downtown. The grassy park offers room for the kids to run, and it’s also a favorite for festivals celebrating wine or the classic fish boil. Your view is of the sparkling waters of Grand Traverse Bay beyond the marina. Walk the pier and gaze at the boats after a picnic and swim.
Elmwood Township
The nautical theme of the new play area is fitting on this beach alongside the Elmwood Township Marina. Picnic with the gang under the large shelters while the kids swing, whirl and slide on the creations of TV-show carpenter Carter Oosterhouse, a Traverse City native who has built more than 20 playgrounds through his Carter’s Kids charity. On M-22, just north of the M-72 intersection. MyNorth 2013 Vacation! 5

SLEEPING BEAR DUNES NAtiONAL LAkEShORE When Leelanau County locals want to show off their region, they bring guests first to the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, most often starting at the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive, which weaves through the dunes. A one-time logger, Pierce Stocking used to walk the spectacular bluffs and wanted to share the beauty with others. He envisioned a clever route that let the geographic drama gradually unfold. A pull-off early in the route offers a distant peek of the ethereal blues of the Glen Lakes; another pull-off delivers views of an undulating dunescape with towering ridges. But we’re betting it was at the Lake Michigan overlook where Good Morning America viewers cemented their decision to name this park the Most Beautiful Place in America. Here, the dunes drop 450 feet steeply down into glittering Lake Michigan, and all the cameras come out—though few can capture the top-of-the-world feel. Marvel at the tiny specks of people on the beach below, then work your climbing muscles at the Dune Climb—the main attrac-
tion for kids (of all ages) who love scaling its heights, then tumbling back down the soft sand. The park’s beauty and fun unfold elsewhere, too, in ways both subtle and spectacular. Follow hiking trails to pinnacle overlooks— Empire Bluffs and Pyramid Point among the favorites. Canoe or kayak through the park on the gorgeous Platte or Crystal Rivers. Or travel back in time with a stop at Glen Haven, a tiny preserved town of museums and an old-time general store, adjacent to the beach recently named most beautiful on the Great Lakes. Fit it all in by setting up camp at popular D.H. Day Campground on the mainland, or escape to one of the rustic hike-in campsites on North or South Manitou Islands. To visit the islands, buy ferry passage from Manitou Island Transit at the Fishtown Pier in Leland and map your daytime or overnight adventure: climb a lighthouse tower, hike to a shipwreck that pokes above the waves, wander the beach for hours. Visitor Center, corner of M-22 and M-72, 231.326.5134, NpS.GOv/SLBE. MyNorth 2013 Vacation! 7

Watch the sunset from an ever-changing vantage point, edging the coast along the dramatic slopes of shoreline dunes, on a 1 1/2-hour evening sail on the Mishe-Mokwa ferry. 231.256.9061.
Paddle the Crystal
Rarely deeper than two feet, the Crystal River is a family favorite for leisurely float trips and chances to spot such wildlife as great blue heron and whitetail deer on the cedar-lined shore. Rent: Crystal River Outfitters, 6249 W. River Rd., 231.334.4420, crystalriveroutfitters.com.
Boat on Glen Lake
When the turquoise color seems so unearthly that you have to get on the water to be sure it’s real, Glen Lake Marine has your vessel—pontoon for a leisurely cookout, Jet Ski for an adrenaline rush, fishing boat to hook perch, bass, pike or trout. 5411 W. Empire Hwy., 231.322.5666, glenlakemarine.com.

Go Charter Fishing
Experience Fishtown’s heritage firsthand by heading out in search of your own trophy Chinook or Coho salmon, steelhead or trout. Whatever the catch, your memories will include the view: the dunes rising along the Leelanau Peninsula shoreline, the Manitou Islands in the distance. Pick a captain who participates in the state’s new Catch and Cook program, and a portion of your haul goes straight from boat to waterside dining. Far Fetched/ Northwest Charters partners with both The Riverside Inn and Restaurant and The Cove, where one favorite preparation is foil-wrapped and baked with peppers and onions (231.941.4375, far-fetched.com); Fishtown Charter Service (231.256.9639, fishtowncharters.com) partners with The Cove.

NORTHPORT STATE PARK Pitch a tent at one of the 55 rustic campsites, rent a mini cabin, or make a day out of exploring the 8.5 miles of hiking trails at this state park, its lighthouse museum and hidden beaches near the north tip of Leelanau Peninsula. No pets are allowed on the shoreline, because the area is prime nesting ground for the tiny, rare piping plover. Spot them (from a distance)—and find blissful solitude—at secluded Cathead Bay, reached by a ¾-mile walk from the parking lot, over forested dunes nearly as enchanting as the sandy cove beach. This summer, a traveling exhibit of 100 aerial lighthouse photographs debuts in the Fog Signal Building. MyNorth 2013 Vacation! 9

BIKING
Ask innkeepers what’s drawing visitors to Leelanau County, and increasingly, they say it’s the remarkable biking, centered around two notable trails. The newly completed Leelanau Trail now stretches 15.5 miles from Suttons Bay to Traverse City, through rolling hills and flower-filled meadows, over converted railroad bridges and past orchards and vineyards. Make a day of it with a stop for breakfast or a well-earned ice cream cone in downtown Suttons Bay. Suttons Bay Bikes offers rentals and repair assistance; they even run guided or self-guided tours to the half-dozen or more wineries located near the trail. (118 N. ST. MARY’S ST., SUTTONS BAY, 231.421.6815, SUTTONSBAYBIKES.COM). The new Heritage Trail within the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is a hit, with Phase One now connecting the popular Dune Climb with the town of Glen Arbor, running past historic Glen Haven’s general store, museums and stunning beach. The winding trail, built over old logging roads, trails and abandoned railroads, offers a scenic, comfortable exploration of the special landscape and easy access to the big lake. Climb a dune
Kids
The mountain of sand aptly called the “Dune Climb,” within the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, can look a bit daunting at first, but seeing the joy of toddlers, teens and grownups alike as they sprint back down makes the huffing and puffing of the ascent worthwhile. Follow the tradition among campers at nearby Interlochen Arts Academy, who earn the moniker “dune goon” by climbing to the top and rolling or tumbling to the bottom at least twice. Picnic tables, restrooms and water fountains wait at the bottom of the sand mountain. Rest at the top long enough to take in the stunning panorama of the Glen Lakes below. (NPS.GOV/SLBE)
Unleash the creativity Let the natural landscape that has inspired countless artists spark your own family creations, at children and family programs offered all summer at The Old Art Building and Community Cultural Center in Leland (OLDARTBUILDING.COM), or in Glen Arbor, where the Glen Arbor Art Association (GLENARBORART. ORG) offers art classes for kids and adults. Drop-in classes at Glen Arbor’s Smock Paper Scissors lets imaginations soar.
Wineries, brewers and food vendors come together, to the sound of blues music, in celebration of Northern Michigan’s culinary abundance and the view along Suttons Bay’s scenic Marina Park. Tickets at MyNorthTickets.com.
Port Oneida Fair, August 9–10 A bygone way of life comes alive at the Port Oneida fair in the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Check out farm animals, demonstrations of native crafts, children’s activities, folk music and more.
Empire Asparagus Festival, May 17–18 Festival-goers often don costumes of giant asparagus stalks, and there’s a poetry contest featuring the most moving asparagus odes. Those activities and the creative way that asparagus is worked into croissants, chocolates and ale prompted MSN.com to deem this one of the world’s weirdest festivals. Festivals, fairs and more! Find your ticket to fun at

Education that feels like fun Kids will never know they’re visiting a museum, not at historic Glen Haven, where marine history is taught through a historically accurate surf rescue (of a doll), a blacksmith who forges tools from molten iron, and an old-time general store stocked with vintage candy (NPS.GOV/SLBE). In Suttons Bay’s Inland Seas Education Center, the popular touch tank and Zebra Bike exhibits, or the chance to look up-close at critters like Spiny Water Fleas, offer a fun, hands-on way to learn about Great Lakes invasive species. Watch underwater life and diving birds through the under-dock camera that sends images into the building. (SCHOOLSHIP.ORG). MyNorth 2013 Vacation! 15

Towns Cedar: This town showcases its Polish
roots during the Polka Festival, held in July each year. But drop in anytime to browse its art gallery, quilt shop or yarn shop or pick up the perfect barbecue staples. Pleva’s Meat Market draws shoppers from all around for its award-winning cherry pecan sausage, and next door’s Cedar City Market provides the libations. Bunting’s Market offers smokehouse goodies and groceries. Wildlife watchers love Victoria Creek’s current, so slow that you can paddle the 3.5 miles to Lake Leelanau and back, listening en route to loons and watching the sunning turtles and fishing herons.
Empire: The Sleeping Bear Dunes National
Lakeshore (park headquarters is located in the lakeside hamlet of Empire) was recently voted the Most Beautiful Place in America by viewers of Good Morning America. No surprise, then, that its wide sandy beaches and the coastal bluffs deliver some of the lakeshore’s most stunning views. Discover culinary delights in the Friendly Tavern, which highlights organic vegetarian delicacies and Grocer’s Daughter Chocolates, often named among the best in America.

Glen Arbor: Situated on a small strip

side, this small town is home to the eponymous Pegtown Station restaurant (acclaimed pizza) and a classic small town grocery with on-site smokehouse.
Lake Leelanau: Situated along the nar-
settlements, the town perched at the northern tip of Leelanau County now houses art galleries, antique shops, restaurants, an independent book store, rock shop, coffee shop, addictive bakery and new restaurants. Boaters love the harbor, visitors the surrounding vineyards and orchards, state park and beaches. Annual summer events include a classic fish boil, fishing derby and classic car show.
rows—the channel connecting North Lake Leelanau and South Lake Leelanau—this tiny town is home to remarkable vacation treats: a popular century-old resort called Fountain Point, a new wine tasting room on the water, an elegant Italian restaurant, farm stands, boat launch and some of the county’s winery favorites. Labor Day weekend brings an annual blues music festival.
Leland: Tourist town meets fishing vil-
lage in Leland, where upscale galleries and boutiques blend seamlessly with the harbor area called Fishtown—wooden docks with cedar-shake fishing shacks repurposed as souvenir shops and food stops. No stay’s complete without a pretzel bread sandwich at the Village Cheese Shanty or a sip of a Chubby Mary enjoyed at The Cove, along Leland’s river. Catch a charter fishing trip or a ferry to the Manitou Islands here.
Maple City: Originally called Pegtown Station, Maple City got its start as a shoe peg factory on several acres of maple timber. Tucked into the hilly country-

Omena: Blink and you’ll miss it, but
that’d be a shame. This curve-in-the-road village boasts a U-pick flower garden, sweet sandy beach, notable art gallery, a pub that serves delectable fish and chips and has an adjacent winery tasting room.
Suttons Bay: This waterfront village
teems with life come summer as visitors explore galleries, boutiques, restaurants, art theater and historic inns or head to the waterfront park for a day at the beach or festivals centered around art, food and wine. Midway up the Leelanau Peninsula, the town is near several wineries and bookends the Leelanau bike trail, which stretches 16 miles to Traverse City. MyNorth 2013 Vacation! 17
