Vacation!
The Good Stuff if you only have a few days In Little Traverse DO not miss: Lavender Hill Farms: With its rolling terrain and more than 8,000 lavender plants, this pesticide-free Boyne City farm is like something out of the French Provençal countryside. Stop by for a stroll through the fragrant fields, or to shop the lavender products (soaps, sachets, jellies and more). 231.582.3784, lavender
Dutch Oven Bakery: Folks have flocked to this cozy Alanson shop since the 1930s to get their sugar fix: cakes, traditional pastries, pies and lofty loaves of legendary cinnamon bread are just the start. Stick around for lunch in the cafe, and peruse treasures in the adjacent yarn shop. 7611 U.S. 31, Alanson,
hillmichigan.net.
231.548.2231, dutchoven.com.
Headlands International Dark Sky Park: There’s no camping at this Mackinaw City property, but as an official “Dark Sky Park,” it’s open for incredible stargazing, way into the wee hours of the morning. A perfect spot to catch the Perseids meteor shower, August 10 through 13. emmeT county.org/darkskypark.
Room for a View: For a great photo-op, there’s a little-known overlook in downtown Harbor Springs offering a knockout vista over Little Traverse Bay. To find it, head to the corner of Spring and Bluff Streets, where a wooden stairway tucked among trees leads up to the viewing platform. Pack a camera. harbor springschamber.com.
Mary Ellen’s Place: Sidle up to the counter on old-fashioned swivel stools at this real-deal soda shop, housed in a historic Harbor Springs newsstand dating back to 1928. Burgers, fries, and hand-dipped malts are a nostalgic treat for the whole family. 145 E. Main, Harbor Springs, 231.526.5591, maryellensplace.com.
Crooked Tree Breadworks: Stone-hearth baked breads, sweet and savory scones, legendary granola, and other delights have gained this artisan bakery a serious reputation. Our current obsession: the Pepper-Parmesan loaf for knockout BLTs. 2264 M-119,

231.347.9574, breadworks.com.
Cruise M-119: This 20-mile two-lane between Harbor Springs and Cross Village is one of the state’s most spectacular drives. Highlights include exploring Good Hart’s historic general store, driving under the canopy-like “Tunnel of Trees,” and finishing with kielbasa and pierogi on the patio at Cross Village’s storied Polish restaurant, Legs Inn.

Beaches
Petoskey State Park: This expansive beach on Little Traverse Bay is a slice of heaven smack between Harbor Springs and Petoskey, making it ideal for a swim after shopping in town. Play a game of volleyball in the sand courts, or take a short hike along the park’s trail system for the incredible views atop Old Baldy, a stable dune just behind the beach. 180 campsites. park, next to the marina, is a favorite for families. The beach has lifeguards, a swimming raft, and a sandy-bottom swim area where you can take a dip in the clean, cold, spring-fed waters of this natural harbor on Little Traverse Bay. The grassy knoll along the beach is perfect for rolling out a blanket and enjoying a take-out lunch from one of the eateries just a couple blocks away. 231.526.7999, harborspringschamber.com.
Thorne Swift Nature Preserve:
This sweet Lake Michigan beach is a bit of a secret, tucked away in a pretty 30-acre preserve near Harbor Springs. It’s just 300 feet of frontage, but on most days you’re likely to have it all to yourself. Bonus: There’s also 1.5 miles of easy hiking trails and boardwalks through dunes and cedar swamps, and an interpretive nature center the kids will adore. On Lower Shore Drive, off M-119 four miles north of Harbor Springs. 231.526.6401, landtrust.org.
Peninsula Beach: A short walk from
downtown Boyne City, this little public beach on Lake Charlevoix is primo for parking a lawn chair for an afternoon or bringing the family for a picnic. It’s actually one of two Boyne City beaches; the other, Tannery Beach, is the perfect place to launch a canoe—and is also popular among dog lovers for letting the pooches jump in for a swim. cityofboynecity.com.

Crooked Lake: This quiet, meander-
ing inland lake northeast of Petoskey is part of the famous Inland Waterway—an interconnected series of rivers and lakes stretching from Petoskey to Cheboygan. On the lake’s western edge is the community of Conway, where the Township Park has a cute little beach for swimming and sunning, a bubbling artesian well, and a picnic-perfect grassy park. Get on the Water Little Traverse Sailors
For a laid-back day on the water, charter a sailboat with Little Traverse Sailors, a nonprofit sailing school on the waterfront in Harbor Springs. Climb aboard Exit Strategy, a 34-foot J/105 sailboat with room for you and five friends, and head to Charlevoix or Beaver Island, or just tool around Little Traverse Bay for an afternoon. (Or, our favorite: Stargaze from the water on a moonlit sail.) If you get bit by the sailing bug after your trip, Little Traverse Sailors offers classes and private instruction for all ages. Bear River Whitewater Park
Bear River Valley Recreation Area’s recent $2.4 million facelift included returning a spectacular stretch of the Bear River to its natural wild state. Dams were
removed, industrial areas were cleaned, and the result is one of Michigan’s few true whitewater experiences, with challenging drops and rapids to thrill experienced paddlers. Bonus: You won’t have to travel far to find it; the park is just steps from downtown Petoskey. Find the park’s main entrances off Lake and West Sheridan Streets. PETOSkEyAREA.COM.

Cruises range between three and five hours each; reservations strongly recommended. 231.436.5023, SHEPLERSFERRy.COM.
Bear River Canoe Livery
For a slower journey down the Bear River, rent canoes or kayaks through this laid-back livery, which offers one-, two-, and four-hour paddling trips along a quiet stretch of the river. Perfect for new paddlers and families with young kids, with lots of scenery and wildlife sightings along the way. 2517 MCDOUGALL RD., 231.347.9038.
Boat the Inland Waterway
The meandering, 40-mile Inland Waterway is the state’s largest interconnected chain of lakes and rivers, stretching from Pickerel Lake, east of Petoskey, all the way to where the Cheboygan River empties into Lake Huron. Round up your friends and rent a pontoon for a leisurely day trip of fishing, swimming, and sightseeing; Windjammer Cove & Marina in Oden has rentals and can point you to the best spots for exploring along your trip. 231.347.6103, WINDJAMMERMARINA.COM.

Little Traverse wheelway: This turn-of-the-century former railway, stretching more than 26 miles along the bay between Charlevoix and Harbor Springs, now serves as one of the region’s most scenic nonmotorized trails—a haven for recreational riders. The wide, paved pathway makes it especially friendly for families with small children. The “East Segment” in Petoskey is a lovely section; start at the Little Traverse History Museum, and continue northeast along Bayfront Park (note: a perfect picnic spot) and through the gorgeous Victorian-era community of Bay View. Map available online, TRAILSCOUNCIL.ORG.
Boyne Highlands Resort: Hop the chairlift for a ride to the top of the mountain, where you’ll find a range of trails suited to all levels of riders. Crosscountry mountain bikers can test their skills on scenic downhill runs; for experts, there’s the experts-only Bike Park, where obstacles like ramps and jumps will challenge even the most aggressive riders. Fort Mackinac: A must-do on Mackinac Island, the 1780-built Fort Mackinac, perched high atop a limestone bluff, was a strategic outpost for British and U.S. armies for more than 115 years. Today, it’s one of the most scenic spots on the island—and a place where history comes alive daily. The parade grounds and historic buildings—some more than 225 years old—have been preserved as interactive exhibits, with costumed interpreters leading demonstrations to show what life was like within the fort for the soldiers and their families, who called this place home. Re-enactments include cannon salutes, rifle firing, bugle playing, medical treatments, children’s games, and even Victorian-era baseball. Stay for lunch in the fort’s Tea Room, where you’ll find spectacular views over downtown. 231.436.4100, MACkINACPARkS.COM.

Colonial Michilimackinac: From 1715 to the early 1780s, this fortified encampment overlooking
the Straits served as a fur trading post for French and British traders in the western Great Lakes. The Mackinaw City landmark is now on the National Register of Historic Places, serving as an open-air, liveaction museum and active archaeological site (more than a million artifacts have been unearthed here since excavation began in 1959). Many of the interactive exhibits are designed with kid-friendly participation in mind: Children can try their hand at soldier drills, crafts, Victorian dances, games, and even helping colonial women tend the vegetable garden and cook dinner over the open hearth. 231.436.4100, MACkINACPARkS.COM.

Crooked Tree Arts Center
The Little Traverse Region has long been a haven for artists—and in Petoskey, the heart of that community is Crooked Tree Arts Center. Housed in an 1890-built Methodist church (in itself a work of art, with incredible architectural details and original stained glass), the center is a vibrant hub for creative and cultural happenings—from exhibits to live music to classes in art, music and dance. After wandering through the galleries, catch a performance in the 235seat theater or peruse the Art Tree Gallery, a year-round shop with jewelry, pottery, paintings and other works for sale by local artists. This summer brings a special salon-style exhibit from Oil Painters of America, featuring lectures, workshops, and more than 400 works from some of the best oil painters in the nation. A must-stop on Petoskey’s annual Gallery Walk, held this year on June 20 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. 461 E. Mitchell St., 231.347.4337, crookedtree.org.
Bay View Music Festival
Since its founding in 1875 as a Methodist retreat camp, the Bay View community has always had its roots in the fine arts and education. Visit Bay View online for performance dates and ticket information, and to learn more this season’s visiting artists series. bayviewfestival.org.

Musts on Mackinac Island
Bike the island The island’s original 1898 ban on cars was looking out for the livelihood of carriage drivers—but it opened the door for bicycle culture to flourish, too. Pedaling Mackinac’s eight-mile perimeter is a sweet way to explore the landmarks, all with the sparkling Straits at your side. Find the bike rental shops near the ferry docks downtown. MACKINACISLAND.ORG.
Tour the Governor’s summer home Originally built as a private summer cottage, this pristine Victorian mansion was sold to the State in the 1940s and converted to be used as the governor’s summer residence. The home is on the National Register of Historic Places, and is open for free public tours every Wednesday throughout the summer. mackinacparks.com.
Fudge Candymakers here have been whipping up this sweet confection since the late 1800s. Most of today’s fudge vendors still use the time-honored, laborintensive technique of paddling the warm, liquid fudge on marble slabs until it cools. A slice or two is the ultimate souvenir.

It’s not only magical, but a great educational trip for small ones, too—stop by the interactive Insect World exhibit for some hands-on learning after your butterfly tour. originalbutterflyhouse.com.
Carriage Rides A horse-drawn buggy tour is a quintessential Mackinac experience—and a fitting way to view the island’s gingerbread Victorian homes. Mackinac Island Carriage Tours, the oldest and largest continuously operating horseand-buggy livery in the world, offers narrated tours of landmarks and historical points of interest. mict.com.
Lilac Festival The romance of Mackinac Island is arguably at its peak during this 10-day festival, a tradition that began with a horse-drawn parade more than 60 years ago on “Lilac Sunday.” Music, walking tours, wine tastings and more, all set to the backdrop of thousands of lilac trees in bloom. June 7-6 mackinacislandlilacfestival.org.
Arch Rock Mackinac’s unique geologic history created dramatic limestone landmarks, the most famous of which is Arch Rock, a rare formation rising 150 feet out of the pristine waters on the island’s southeast shores. A must-stop photo op. MACKINACISLAND.ORG. MyNorth 2013 Vacation! 23

DINING OUT Cafe Sante: This casually refined, European-style bistro dishes up its unique breakfast options every day till 3 p.m., making it a great go-to for a late, lingering brunch. Simple classics like eggs Benedict and quiche Lorraine mingle on the menu with treats like the tiramisu Belgian waffle; lunch items include smoked salmon salad, steak and frites, and escargot. 1 WATER ST., BOYNE CITY, 231.582.8800, MAGNUMHOSPITALITY.COM/CAFESANTE.
The Original Pancake House: The hardest part about breakfast here is making your selection from the lengthy, tempting menu: omelets, corned beef hash, waffles, crepes, and of course, flapjacks—a dozen different kinds, from coconut to bacon-filled to lacy Swedish pancakes served with lingonberry sauce. Don’t miss the signature Apple Pancake, a baked beauty heaped with sautéed apples and a cinnamon-sugar glaze. 4165 MAIN ST., BAY HARBOR, 231.439.9989, ORIGINALPANCAKEHOUSE.COM.

This Boyne City restaurant and pub is all about the locavore movement—so it’s not uncommon for 10 of the 15 rotating taps to be devoted to regional breweries like Founders, Short’s, New Holland and Keweenaw. KNOT JUST A BAR Located in Bay Harbor’s marina, this restaurant is refined yet still casual—to be expected from a place where patrons often arrive by boat. Julienne Tomatoes: The sandwiches at this charming Petoskey cafe and deli are the stuff of foodie dreams: there are more than a dozen to choose from, each crafted from super fresh, locally sourced ingredients and specialty breads from nearby Crooked Tree Breadworks. Housemade soups, salads, and desserts too. 421 HOWARD ST., 231.439.9250, JULIENNETOMATOES.COM. Guerney’s Harbor Bottle Shop: Tucked in the back of a wine store in downtown Harbor Springs, Guerney’s no-frills sandwich counter has developed a passionate following for its fresh-sliced meat-and-cheese delights on super-soft, house-baked bread. Two tips: Do order the deli sauce (it’s divine), don’t ask for tomatoes (the owners are anti, claiming tomatoes ruin their spectacular bread). 215 E. MAIN ST., 231.526.5472.
Good Hart General Store: The spectacular drive along M-119 is made better with a stop at the deli inside this 1930s-era general store.
