editor’s note Naturally, MyNorth Wedding is always a fun publication to work on. I mean, who doesn’t love to let brides know that their weddings are going to be feature stories in a magazine—and then get a chance to let them bubble their beautiful, romantic stories out in an interview? But this year’s issue was particularly exciting to put together, because the beautiful young woman laying it out, our graphic designer Rachel Dorie, is planning her own wedding. And as she lays out the stories in this stellar issue of MyNorth Wedding, she is eyeing them for ideas to make her own event sizzle with Up North style. There are other glowing and gorgeous brides-to-be in our MyNorthstaff family, as well, including Annette Niergarth, our assistant ticketing coordinator for MyNorthTickets.com and Lexie Snable, the daughter of our senior graphic designer Gail Snable. I love to think of them grabbing up this issue as it comes off the press, soaking up the cute, cool unique

Kallie & Nick KALLIE KIRKENDALL NICK CHAPMAN JULY 31, 2016
Christmas morning, 2015: Kallie and Nick had been together long enough that friends were joking she should just ask him. After he thought they’d unwrapped all their presents she pulled out a small wrapped box—he said, “Uh-oh, is this what I think it is?” He opened it to find ... a photo of a bicycle travel bag she’d ordered for him but that didn’t make it in time for Christmas. Guffaw, guffaw, guffaw, she laughed but he didn't. A couple of minutes later she turned around to find Nick on one knee (with their trusty dog Griffin right beside him) —a small box in his outstretched hand. “I’ve been waiting almost 38 years to ask someone this,” he began ... Flash forward to a glorious July day six months later at The Homestead resort in Glen Arbor. The couple wanted a destination wedding that fit their outdoorsy lifestyle—and they wanted it close enough to their Indiana roots to make travel for their friends and family as simple as possible. The Homestead seemed the perfect fit, surrounded as it is by the magnificent Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, where they’d vacationed previously. The couple arrived in Traverse City a couple days before the wedding and hit up Traverse City’s famous restaurant and brewpub scene before heading the 30 miles out to Glen Arbor, land of dune-rimmed Lake Michigan shoreline, with quaint Leelanau County towns nearby. It is also home to Art’s Tavern, Glen Arbor’s legendary watering hole, also famous for its excellent bar food. “Our friends are still raving about Art’s Tater Tots,” Kallie laughs. But the bridal party also loved The Western Avenue Grill across the street where the rehearsal dinner was held. Which brings us to the story of Griffin, the couple’s friendly, wirehaired griffon, who was miffed because he was not invited to the rehearsal dinner—and so broke out of the hotel room where he was being held to find his own wedding to attend elsewhere on The Homestead property. Needless to say, Kallie and Nick got a call ... By the next day Griffin, now forgiven, was front and center at his owners’ wedding. The 60-guest event began with a casual ceremony on the lusciously landscaped grounds of Camp Firefly. The bridal flowers were succulents in honor of a much-loved deceased friend who’d raised them. To that end, the three bridesmaids wore three color-versions of the same printed floral dresses. The groomsmen were chill in their tangerine linen Tommy Bahama shirts. The couple exchanged vows taken from song lyrics. “We called them our mixedtape vows,” Kallie says. Then it was into Camp Firefly for a perfectly executed buffet dinner catered by The Homestead staff, which included pasta, chicken, prime rib and two special prepared vegan entries for Kallie’s sister and her boyfriend. After the reception, Kallie and Nick, headed to their beautiful room at the resort. The guests? They happily closed down Art’s Tavern. Emily & Chris EMILY COOPER CHRIS WAHA JUNE 25, 2016
As the bride’s father, Bob, reminded guests in his wedding toast to the newly married couple: The pair’s parents predicted that Emily and Chris were meant for each other—even before the two had met! Well, okay, it wasn’t a perfect prediction. Chris’s mom, Wendie, got it a bit wrong when, after hiring Emily as an intern at Country Club of Boyne, at Boyne Highlands, she thought that the young woman would be a perfect match for her son Jaimen, Chris’s brother. But Bob called it. As he told the story at the wedding, when he and his wife, Wendy, were dropping their daughter off for her internship, they took time to have lunch at the Country Club. Chris was their waiter. When he was out of earshot, Bob said to Emily, “Maybe you’ll meet a nice guy like him.” Turns out, her father knew best. Before the end of the summer Emily and Chris were dating. To make things more fun, when she got back to Michigan State in the fall, Emily fixed her best friend, Alex, up with Jaimen, who was also a Spartan. And now they are married! Emily and Chris dated five years, most of it long distance, before Chris proposed last Thanksgiving. Given that their romance started at the Country Club of Boyne—and given that the Harbor Springs area is destination-wedding heaven—the couple naturally decided to have their wedding there. The fun kicked off with a Thursday evening rehearsal at Pond Hill Farm, a combination farm, winery, brewery and cafe set on the famously scenic M119—otherwise known as the tunnel of trees. The event was a kicked-back barbecue where the guests had the run of the farm, including trying their hands at Pond Hill’s wacky squash shooters. Yup, the game is really about winging squash across the countryside. By Friday, most of the 150 guests had arrived to check in to Boyne Highlands, with its myriad of accommodations, from lodge rooms to cottages. There were plenty of participants for a group golf outing on the Highlands’ beautiful course, The Moor—one of four Highlands courses. The relaxed, romantic ceremony, officiated by Chris’s stepfather, Brad Keen, was held on the Country Club’s back patio overlooking the 18th hole of the Highlands’ Donald Ross Memorial golf course. After the ceremony, as Chris and Emily walked down the aisle, her cousin handed her a phone: her grandmother, who couldn’t attend the wedding, was on face time and had gotten to watch the ceremony. Emily recalls it as one of the most special moments of a very special day. Dinner was preceded by cocktails on the patio. Dancing on the patio followed the meal. And after that? When at Boyne Highlands, the bridal party and guests (who still had energy!) did what Boyne Highlanders do, in the summer anyway: They closed down the Slopeside Lounge! Joseph & Kierstin JOSEPH JANIK KIERSTIN LORENCE JUNE 11, 2016
The proposal: Cue food sickness (Kierstin’s) on a cruise, a fumbled handoff by Joe that sent the diamond engagement ring tumbling into the shallow Caribbean—feet from where a shark and stingray lurked ... all to the soundtrack of Tim McGraw and Kenny Chesney singing out love ballads from Joe’s phone. Okay, the ring that Joe dropped was a fake, but the rest was true. And Joe knew, as Kierstin prepared to dive into that carnivore-invested water after it, that she was ready to risk life and limb for his eternal love and bling. Before she dove, Joe pulled out the real ring and did his proposal up right. Then he snapped a pic of Kierstin wearing the ring—with that ’ol stingray floating just behind her. The happily ever after: No sharks or stingrays at the wedding venue, Grand Traverse Resort and Spa on Lake Michigan’s Grand Traverse Bay. Just clear blue water with nothing that bites. No food sickness either. Only perfectly prepared, upscale cuisine à la Traverse City, the Midwest’s food capital. Beyond those compelling reasons for having their big event at Grand Traverse Resort is the fact that the bride and groom have both vacationed in the Traverse City area enough to know that it is a place where memories are made. Most of the 160 guests who came from Indiana, Chicago and all parts of Michigan stayed on the grounds of Grand Traverse Resort. This destination wedding extraordinaire actually began the Thursday before the wedding, when 40 members of the bridal party and guests boarded buses to sip their way through Old Mission Peninsula’s vineyards. “We had two buses that took us around to four or five different wineries on Old Mission,” Kierstin says. “The wineries were great about getting us special tastings for such a large group.” By Friday night the event rocked into a welcome barbecue at the resort’s Pavilion venue. Afterward, they hosted guests in the resort’s Manitou Room for entertainment by Bruce Barker, the Piano man—a favorite entertainer around Purdue where Joe went to school. Saturday morning dawned bright and sunny. The outdoor ceremony was waterside at Grand Traverse Resort’s private beach club on East Grand Traverse Bay. With the I do’s said, the resort’s shuttles whisked the bridal party and their guests across the property to the elegantly rustic Garvey Family Barn—built in the 1880s, the restored barn is now one of the resort’s seven venues. Following a cocktail hour complete with passed hors d’oeuvres, the guests dined on dishes that included Maytag blue cheese–encrusted filets and Traverse City–style chicken breasts with Michigan cherry chutney. Joe and Kierstin kicked off the dancing to “One of Those Nights,” by Tim McGraw. No average couple’s first dance this—they had taken lessons to learn the choreographed dance several times a week for three months. “It was my Christmas present from Joe,” Kierstin says. “I was begging to do dance lessons and I think I brought it up enough that he bought them for me,” she says with a laugh and adds: “We had a blast.” Kierstin and Joe’s fabulous wedding weekend closed with a brunch for their guests on the window-filled 17th floor of the resort’s signature Tower. With sweeping views of the fields, orchards and shorelines below them, the couple hosted a delicious goodbye to the people who had helped them launch their new life together. Lynzie & Nick LYNZIE FURSETH NICK NORRIS AUGUST 13, 2016
Although Lynzie and Nick both spent a portion of their childhood growing up in the same Okemos, Michigan, neighborhood, Nick is four years older so their paths didn’t cross often. Only, in fact, when Lynzie babysat for a family who lived across the street from Nick—a family she’d willingly babysit for, she recalls, so she could crush on Nick. During Lynzie’s last year in college, a mutual friend formally introduced them and four years later they were planning their dream wedding. Lynzie’s grandparents have a home on Spider Lake, just outside of Traverse City, so the East Lansing-couple was familiar enough with Northern Michigan to believe an Up North destination wedding would be very special. A friend of Lynzie’s told her about Willowbrook Mill in Northport–a village located at the tip of the Leelanau Peninsula on Lake Michigan’s Grand Traverse Bay. Lynzie headed north to check it out—a trip that took her along the famously scenic M22, a country highway that winds through the village. “It was intimate and had so much character—I just fell in love,” Lynzie says of the venue. Indeed, the venue’s ballroom with its white shiplap siding, stone surround windows, fieldstone fireplace (one of three at the venue), open rafters, dark wood floor and elegant chandeliers is the very definition of rustic elegance. The historic building itself is cantilevered over Northport Creek and entered by a footbridge over the creek—a setting that befits a fairytale wedding. Sweetening the package is the fact that Willowbrook Mill is nestled smack in the heart of Northport. “A wedding at Willowbrook Mill means that you have a builtin village of well wishers,” says the venue’s owner Mimi Heberlein. As the 105 wedding guests of Lynzie and Nick found out, Northport also throws some pretty great parties—as in the annual Dog Parade and the Northport Wine Festival, both of which took place over the wedding weekend. Beyond those fun events, Lynzie and Nick and their closest family and friends enjoyed a rehearsal dinner at the North Country Grill in nearby Suttons Bay, followed by a lively welcome party for all the incoming guests at Tucker’s of Northport, a restaurant/bar that offers bowling. After the ceremony in the charming white-clapboard Trinity Church, guests simply strolled down the hill—while they took in the expansive harbor view in front of them—to Willowbrook Mill. And what an enticing sight met them when they entered the ballroom. Amid the glow of tea-lights and pillar candles, sensual bouquets fat with six different shades of pink, cream and peach roses set in mercury glass vases graced the center of each table, while an equally lush arrangement festooned the fieldstone fireplace. A plated dinner followed a lovely cocktail party served on the Willowbrook Mill terrace overlooking the creek. The reception wrapped up in true Northport style—with homemade cinnamon buns and coffee from the village’s beloved Barb’s Bakery, located just across the street from Willowbrook Mill. Stefani & Trevan STEFANI PENTIUK TREVAN THOMPSON SEPTEMBER 10, 2016
Marrying her fiancé, Trevan Thompson, in her hometown of Leland was going to be a dream come true for Stefani Pentiuk, who had received a life-saving heart transplant at age 8, followed by a kidney transplant and years of ongoing health complications. Most recently, acute pancreatitis sent her back to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, where she had received her heart transplant so many years ago. With Stefani lying in a hospital bed there in August, no one knew if the September wedding would even happen. (For the full story on Stefani and Trevan’s incredible journey to the altar, go to MyNorth.com/Stefani). But the tough, life-embracing young woman, who has stolen the heart of anyone who knows her story, recovered in time for her big day. Gale force winds and a torrential downpour in the morning threatened to ruin the day. But Stefani’s optimism never wavered. The couple was determined to exchange vows on top of Whaleback Natural Area, part of the Leelanau Conservancy, in what they called the perfect spot. The bride’s father, Perry Pentiuk, is a Realtor and consequently knew the owners of the private property, who were more than willing to lend their land to the festivities. Despite the inclement weather, the couple waited patiently, and just before the scheduled ceremony, there was a miraculous break in the rain. Over 150 guests walked down a picturesque path onto an open green space overlooking an incredible view of Lake Michigan. The wedding guests included all four of Stefani’s doctors from the Mayo Clinic, who were able to witness the wedding celebration of the little girl they had saved 17 years earlier. During the ceremony, the couple took their individual collections of Leland blue stones (a fun, but competitive hobby they share) and combined them in a symbolic, Michigan version of mixing sand. The Leland Lodge provided the perfect venue for the celebration afterward with many of Stefani and Trevan’s outof-town guests able to stay in the renovated Lodge’s rooms and guest cottages. The classic sophistication of the Leland Room offered wedding revelers an elegant banquet space and dance floor as well as access to the intimate, lush courtyard. The couple chose to showcase the Lodge’s renowned food offerings with a fun strolling buffet featuring bride and groom favorites: sliders, grilled cheese, macaroni, seafood and salad set up at different stations. Dessert included an ice cream station with Chef Tyler’s famous chocolate chip cookies. Katelyn VanVreede, Leland Lodge’s Event Coordinator, remembers the couple’s special day as storybook-perfect symbolized, in part, by a framed image behind the couple’s chairs that read, “You have my heart.” PHOTOGRAPHY: SHANNON SCOTT PHOTOGRAPHY, SHANNONSCOTTPHOTOGRAPHY.WORDPRESS.COM VENUE: LELAND LODGE, LELAND, LELANDLODGE.COM

Opposite: Growing up in Leland, Stefani spent countless hours in the quintessential Fishtown harbor working in the Dam Candy Store and Carlson’s Fishery. Showcasing a whimsical, beachy theme, the bride wanted her wedding to incorporate what she calls the essence of Leland. One of the most memorable parts of the day was having photos taken on the iconic Fishtown tugboat aptly named “Joy.” Last minute dress

alterations were done by Coco Sews in Leland. Flower arrangements by Shirley Cook (Trevan’s aunt) from The Flower Haus in Marshall, Michigan, highlighted Stefani’s favorite: the yellow billy ball, which dries just as bright and “happy” as when it is fresh. The yellow and green of the bouquets and the gray of the bridesmaid dresses blended in perfectly with the colors of the boat, said Stefani.

Aurielle & Kyle AURIELLE THOMPSON KYLE ISAACSON JULY 23, 2016
Here’s the thing. Aurielle and Kyle can’t agree on when they actually met. Kyle met Aurielle at a party of a mutual friend, while Aurielle met Kyle at a trivia night a couple weeks later. Due to Kyle’s expansive knowledge of useless facts, the team won trivia that night and a pizza was the prize. Aurielle was hungry and impressed and thought, What a nerd, but free pizza is awesome. Kyle thought, Why is this girl introducing herself when we already met? They became friends and started going out together often. Aurielle was the best wingman Kyle has ever had: she was always setting him up on dates. What she failed to realize was that all he wanted was her. Fast-forward a few months and through more pizza outings, they developed a great friendship and a strong bond, however, he never worked up the courage to express how he felt. He accepted a great offer for a new job in Wisconsin. Aurielle was sad, but she encouraged him to go. Long story short, he eventually told her how he felt, and the two started dating. Once she graduated, she moved to Milwaukee to be with him. And that was where he proposed, by having the words “Will you marry me?” printed on a dog tag for her dog, Jager. On an evening walk through a park near their apartment he asked her to read it—then got down on one knee.
50
Aurielle grew up in Boyne City and had always dreamed of an outdoor wedding on Lake Charlevoix. The couple opted to have everything—the ceremony, cocktail hour and reception—all at Sommerset Pointe so that their guests could relax. “Between the food, the lawn, the beautiful tent and the option to customize [the event] as much as we wanted, it was absolutely perfect,” Kyle says. And relax they all did. They ordered up the bride’s specialty drink, Frisky Whiskey (Jack Daniel’s and Vernors) and/or the groom’s favorite, John Daly (Arnold Palmer and vodka). They rocked out to the live Brena band (who played from the ceremony, through the cocktail hour and reception). They played yard games, including a special only-in-Michigan game of cornhole, in which the beanbags were shaped like both the Lower Peninsula (Aurielle’s home peninsula) and Upper Peninsula (Kyle’s home peninsula). And at the end of the evening—with visions of their upcoming honeymoon in Italy dancing in their heads—this fun and romantic couple premiered the same-day-edit video they’d had made by Style and Motion video company. The beautiful video ended as the reception had—with Kyle picking Aurielle up as they made their way through a sparkler sendoff from their friends and family. Jennifer & Thomas JENNIFER DRECHNOWICZ THOMAS MICK OCTOBER 8, 2016
When Tommy Mick, an electrical engineer, rented an apartment in Canton, Michigan, near his work, little did he know that the deal came with his future wife. Jennifer Drechnowicz was the property manager at the complex—and in charge of events, which made it easy for the pair to get to know each other. Then came a date to a Tiger’s game and well, it wasn’t too long before a trip to the Silver Lake Dunes found Tommy down on one knee proposing. Jennifer, who’d fallen in love with Traverse City while attending the Great Lakes Culinary Institute at Northwestern Michigan College, knew she wanted to be married Up North at a rusticthemed event. While searching venues online Jennifer came across BlueBridge, and she and her mother made an appointment to drive north and check it out. “It sounds corny,” Jennifer says, “But as we were driving there a huge rainbow spread across the sky. My mom said, ‘Maybe it’s a sign.’” As it turned out it was. BlueBridge was set up for a wedding that day and Jennifer fell in love with the woodsy venue. The centerpieces for that day’s wedding were even sunflowers, the flowers that Jennifer had dreamed of having at her wedding. Add to all of that ambiance, the fact that the ballroom and chapel are both onsite, meaning that out-of-town guests wouldn’t have to navigate an unknown area. Jennifer and her mother were sold.

The weekend of the wedding, the bridal party and many of the guests stayed at the old timey mom ’n’ pop Ellis Lake Resort located 500 feet through the woods from BlueBridge—lodging that added to the event’s rustic Up North theme. The rehearsal dinner was at the hip and relaxed Blue Tractor Cookshop in nearby Traverse City. After the picture-perfect wedding that included cocktails and appetizers after the ceremony, followed by fun, relaxed food like pulled pork sandwiches and white cheddar macaroni and cheese, the guests and bridal party toasted s’mores at BlueBridge’s campfire. “Everyone was over the moon about the food and the venue,” Jennifer says. Stuffed (and sticky) with s’mores, the couple and their close friends and family went back to Ellis Lake Resort for a bonfire that lasted late into the night. The next day, many of the guests took the opportunity to explore boutiques, shops, restaurants and wineries in and around Traverse City. The exhausted but happy newlyweds, however, were content simply to curl up together in their little log cabin on the shore of sweet Ellis Lake. BlueBridge – Formerly Frog Pond Village BlueBridge (formerly Frog Pond Village), is nestled in the middle of 10 stunning acres, framed by beautiful mature hardwoods and pines. The interior of the property is beautifully landscaped with gardens, walking paths, small ponds with fountains, small bridges, several outdoor fire pits and countless special touches. There are no shortages for great photo opportunities that will serve as the perfect backdrop for capturing your special day. In addition, there is a wood-chipped walking path that circles the property that leads you to a path down to a small, scenic lake serving as yet another great photo location. There’s a large, landscaped park area with a gazebo in the middle and a small vineyard bordering it on one side. The phrase “rustic-elegance” is often used to describe different environments, but it would be hard to come up with a better way to describe our three unique venues for wedding ceremonies & receptions, elopements and all kinds of other events that serve from 5 to 350 people. The venue is also super convenient, positioned only a few miles from downtown Traverse City and Interlochen. It offers easy access to parking, as well as temperature controlled environments including indoor, outdoor and open-air venues. There is an up north feel to it but at the same time, numerous touches of class and elegance that are unmistakable. The combination of these results in an environment that is warm, inviting and classy all at the same time. Numerous updates are taking place in January 2017, including completely remodeled bathrooms, bride rooms, new chairs for ceremonies, new lights and paint in the reception halls and extensive upgrades to state of the art sound, lighting and all things audio visual!

RECIPE FOR AN UP NORTH BOHO WEDDING. A Free Spirited, Relaxed Bride (And the Groom Who Adores Her)
STORY BY ELIZABETH EDWARDS PHOTOGRAPHY BY MELISA MCKOLAY PHOTOGRAPHY, MCKOLAYPHOTO.COM
Meet Katie, a willowy, gypsy-beautiful brunette with a hippie soul. Katie loves cycling, camping, and taking in outdoor concerts, and she’s always up for an adventure: Like the epic out-West backpacking trip she took soon after she met Peter. As for his part, Peter thought she was way worth waiting for her to get that trip out of her system. You want relaxed? Here’s relaxed. Peter had just proposed when Katie found out she’d been accepted to grad school in New Hampshire to become a physicians assistant. So after a whirlwind three months of planning, Katie packed up and moved from their Columbus, Ohio, home to the East Coast, where she buried herself in books while Peter picked up planning details. Serendipitously, Katie’s semester exams fell on the weekend before the wedding. Katie’s laidback demeanor showed in her bridal-wear choices: A strapless, flowing Nicole Miller gown and a eucalyptus head-wreathe.

Clockwise from top: The ceremony was held on the deck at the Leland Country Club (just down the road from the Leland Lodge) with its amazing view of Lake Leelanau. A CD with couple’s personal playlist was the wedding favor. Birch bark cones held bouquets at each side of the altar. Three members of Olivia Mainville & the Aquatic Troupe performed acoustic music at the ceremony. The full five-person band performed at the reception. Spray roses and peonies graced Katie’s eucalyptus-leaf head wreathe. The men wore mango-colored spray roses on their lapels.

An Ace Team To make their boho wedding happen, Katie and Peter put together an amazing team—amazing both for their skill and for the way they embraced the couple’s vision of a boho wedding. The day-of coordinator was Madeline Begley of Event to Remember. Marla Courtney Wood executed the stunning floral pieces—including Katie’s hairpiece and the fabulous bouquet on the wedding altar. The intimate, outdoor lounge (think: bedouin tent!) and birch altar were created by Kate Walski of 307 Events. And, of course, there was Katelyn VanVreede, the super organized and helpful events and marketing manager at the Leland Lodge, where the reception was held.
A Free-Spirited Harbor Town: Leland Both Katie and Peter have connections to Northern Michigan. Peter and his family spent many summers on Platte Lake, and Katie and her family on Lake Leelanau— not far from the village of Leland, with its weathered wharf and shanties collectively known as Fishtown. It is the perfect backdrop for a laidback free-spirited event! The couple provided their guests with an Explore Leland itinerary. Under headings like Chill, Play and Wine they directed their guests to everywhere from the uninhabited Manitou Islands, kayaking the Crystal River and touring the wineries of the Leelanau Peninsula.
A Venue With Special Meaning Peter proposed to Katie on a short getaway to the Leland Lodge the summer before. They’d strolled to a bench beside the golf course with a view of Lake Michigan, when he decided to go for it. “Well, I don’t know what the future holds ...,” he began. “Yeah, no one does, duh,” Katie said not grasping the magnitude of the moment. “Well, I don't know what the future holds but I know I always want you by my side ...,” Peter persevered. The rest being history.

Clockwise: Katie found her tapestry tablecloths and the macramé piece online. Young guests Jaxson and Eva Hays hang out in the children’s tipi that was outfitted with pillows and white lights. Guests from left to right: Jimmy Dunn, Danny Merkle, Trish Gentile, Amy Day, Peter Merkle, Steve Gentile, Ricky Day, John Dornback.
Boho colors make bold, sassy statements—pinks, orange, gold, red, turquoise, deep green—and the patterns are infinite. Don’t even try to get matchy-matchy! Katie purchased her own tapestry tablecloths online, and Kate Walski of 307 Events provided the props for the Bedouinstyle lounge. Billowy, translucent-white swag created a tent feeling, while the cosmos-patterned Mandala hung behind a bench outfitted with orange and gold beaded pillows. Marla Courtney Wood picked up the theme with a sunset-burst of color in the flowers: pink ice and burgundy safari sunset protea, magenta mokara orchids, mango and pink spray roses and coral peonies danced with each other in the bridal bouquets the stunning altar piece and even in the bride’s and bridesmaids’ eucalyptus-leaf headdresses and the groom’s and groomsmen’s boutonnieres. Marla also brought along her collection (given to her from her mother) of antique brass vases and candlestick holders to shine up all that color and give the décor a Moroccan accent.
Natural Elements The earthiness of boho style demands bringing the natural world in. So Marla Courtney Wood was free to unleash her stash of driftwood (under the salmon charcuterie, as the surface for the present table and as a part of each centerpiece— making each unique). Marla also reached into her magic boxes of cool décor items and came out with deer antlers, arranged strategically on tables and fastened to the top of the altar, and quail feathers to go into the floral arrangements—even the one on the cake..

Fun, Funky, Eclectic Music “We both really love many types of music—Indie rock to bluegrass to hip-hop to EDM,” Peter says. “Quite the range, I know, but there’s very little we don’t like.” Given their shared passion for music, the couple gave it careful consideration, deciding on the five-member group Olivia Mainville & the Aquatic Troupe—who bill their style as ranging from gypsy swing to baroque pop. After the band was finished playing, the couple popped on a playlist of fun, party songs to finish off the evening. “Everyone was on the dance floor throughout the night,” remember the event planner, Madeline Begley. With all that good music still playing in their ears, guests went home with their own copies of a CD containing a playlist that Katie made for Peter early in their relationship.

WHEN THE FATHER OF THE GROOM IS BILL LAIMBEER, THE FORMER DETROIT PISTONS STAR, NBA HALL OF FAMER AND ALLAROUND MICHIGAN SPORTS ICON, YOU KNOW THE GUEST LIST IS GOING TO BE LARGE. By last May, 230 people were making travel plans for the July 30, Charlevoix wedding of Kelly Storves and Eric Laimbeer. The couple currently lives in Florida and both grew up in metro Detroit, but with Northern Michigan connections strong in both families—vacations and family homes—the couple knew they wanted to be married Up North. Not long after Eric’s breathtaking proposal atop a cliff on the West Indies’ island of St. Barths (a wide-open view of the Caribbean on one side, the harbor on the other) the couple headed to North Michigan to find a venue. Their search took them from Traverse City to Charlevoix, only to find that venues on their wish list were already booked (over a year out!) or weren’t big enough to accommodate all of their guests.

More sleuthing led them to Shanahan’s barn at the Charlevoix Country Club. The mammoth, soaring, perfectly restored turnof-the-last-century barn sits on what is now the 16th hole of the club’s Heatherwoods course. The barn didn’t look like much when they first saw it—weathered timbers against a bare cement floor. “When my dad first saw it he was pretty hesitant because it looked so bare,” Kelly remembers. But Kelly and her mom were confident that they could put together the right event team to play up its rustically elegant, lost-in-time ambiance. What’s more, with an occupancy max of 300 or so people, the barn had room to spare! Kelly and Eric planned a full-on destination wedding with a rehearsal dinner on Friday night at Sagamore’s in the elegant Inn at Bay Harbor, just north of Charlevoix. They also invited all 230 guests to a welcoming party at Charlevoix Country Club immediately following the rehearsal dinner—it was to be a fun, relaxed event with grilled burgers and dogs. But the best laid plans: In May, two months before the event the Charlevoix Country Club burned down. While fortunately no one was hurt in the fire, it threw the welcome party plans into a frenzy. So close to the wedding date there were simply no available options—except to tap into the booming, delicious, trendy Northern Michigan food truck scene. The solution? Erect two tents on the on the country club tennis courts and bring in the Cheese & Co., and The Landing food trucks. The trucks were a huge hit. “It was so fun,” Kelly says. “I think it worked out better than what we had planned.”

From then on, everything about the wedding went seamlessly—a fact that Kelly credits to her mother, the staff at Shanahan’s barn, Jennifer Haf of BLOOM floral design and to their wedding planner Sheila DodsonWright and Carly Shafer of Tableau Events. “Tableau did everything from the planning to the designs, invites and decorations—Sheila and Carly were amazing!” Kelly says. She recalls her reaction the first time she saw it fully decorated, just moments before she walked down the aisle: “I stood in the doorway and thought, Wait I don’t want to go yet I just want to stand and look.” After a simple, lovely wedding ceremony on the barn’s second floor, the guests and bridal party enjoyed a leisurely cocktail party on the patio with a live-music trio and hors d’oeuvres that include smoked whitefish and trout, melted brie with walnuts and caramel and chicken sate. Afterward, the plated dinner catered by Grey Gables Inn featured whitefish and filet mignon. When the plates were cleared it was dancing to the Detroitbased band, Your Generation in Concert, a nine-piece band that rocked the old barn down to its fieldstone foundation with six decades of American/British pop hits— songs that got all ages up and dancing. “They were so fun and entertaining,” Kelly says.

As the lights in Shanahan’s barn went out, the bridal party and guests who still had the energy were shuttled to (and from) Charlevoix’s popular Villager Pub. It was a wild, crazy-fun scene made more so by two giant Kelly and Eric heads that first appeared on the shuttle and then traveled to the pub with the group—made by Eric’s fun-loving and talented aunt. This destination wedding extraordinaire came to a close the next day with a brunch at Charlevoix’s Weathervane Terrace. Whoa! Hold that ball a minute! Any Piston fan worth a seat at The Palace is going to want to know how the Big Man was on the assist: “He was great, very cooperative,” Kelly says.” Adding with a laugh: “He didn’t ask questions, just did what he was told.”
The couple’s first dance was to “Love Never Felt So Good,” by Michael Jackson & Justin Timberlake.
