$$27renee & chris==29 RENEE BARONE & CHRIS BROOKS AUGUST 5, 2017
Renee and Chris were set up the old-fashioned way—by a mutual friend. The connection was before dating-app trends, and Chris wasn’t much for social media, so Renee’s Facebook stalking did little good prior to their first, basically blind, date. Hurrying along Chicago’s Milwaukee Avenue in 5-inch heels and a silk blouse, Renee called Chris to see how she would recognize him. He said, look for the White Sox jersey. She wasn’t impressed. And then she saw him: a bald, middle-aged, overweight guy wolfing down a hotdog. Just then, Chris stepped around the corner, laughing (and very nicely dressed). Renee says from that first date, she knew this was her guy. Chris and Renee, who now call Chicago home, had both previously lived in NYC during the same timeframe, even running in the same circles, but had never met. With a shared love for comedy, they frequented the same NYC improv club—Upright Citizens Brigade (founded by Amy Poehler), where Chris performed and Renee went for a good laugh. Though the fates missed their cue in NYC, fortune smiled on them in Chicago, and after that first date stunt, Chris and Renee proved inseparable. They knew they wanted a Northern Michigan wedding, where Renee’s connection runs deep. Back to the 1850s, in fact, when her family immigrated to Beaver Island. For the last 160 years, her relatives have continued to live on the remote Lake Michigan island, making it the perfect getaway for family vacations throughout her childhood. Chris spent his college days in Northern California, and Renee went to school in the South, so friends and family were coming from all over the country. The destination wedding had to give everyone an unforgettable Northern Michigan experience, and water was a prerequisite. Enter The Homestead. Renee, who had never before been on the grounds, chose the venue outright, recognizing there was nothing else like it: the expansive vistas nearby that take in the Glen Lakes and Lake Michigan, the incredible accommodations, and the myriad of resort amenities. The idea of wedding guests taking the ski lift up the mountain to the ceremony site to be greeted with a glass of champagne at the top was icing on the cake. And for the 140 guests—75 percent of whom had never been to Northern Michigan—the setting, including the Caribbean-blue of the water and the sheer size of Sleeping Bear Dunes, was nothing short of astounding. The couple was married on the resort’s Bay Mountain—a stunning outdoor ceremony site that looks out over Lake Michigan. The couple’s eclectic love of music was reflected in the ceremony that featured The Moxie Strings as guests were seated, followed by covers of John Williams’s songs for the wedding party processional and Radiohead’s "True Love Waits" as the bride walked down the aisle. The Beach Boys, Velvet Underground and Kanye West rounded out the couple’s carefully crafted program before guests were treated to an après-ceremony cocktail hour atop Bay Mountain. As these were no conventional newlyweds, this was no ordinary cocktail hour. Taking advantage of the fact that The Homestead’s Mountain Flowers golf course runs along Bay Mountain, the couple took each other to the golf-hole game Closest to the Pin while their guests sipped and cheered. And then it was all aboard The Homestead’s chairlifts to descend the hill to Mountain Flowers Lodge, located in the resort’s charming winter village. The Homestead’s chefs served a delicious plated dinner that kept everyone’s energy up for the nonstop full dance floor courtesy of DJ AB from Grand Rapids, who brought down the house (and got the fun-loving bride to crowd surf ).

The maid of honor, Elizabeth Poindexter, assists the bride with her wedding dress—an Amsale-designed gown from Nordstrom that epitomized the bride’s effortless glamour. A solitaire-cut stone with channel diamonds set in a yellow gold band shows off a classic elegance. The bride and her mother sip sparkling rosé and enjoy the peaceful solitude outside their room at The Homestead before the ceremony. The couple exchanges vows they wrote themselves. BLOOM Floral Design uses an array of flora, including succulents, dahlias and roses among smoke bush foliage and plum ranunculus to create the vision for natural, organic décor.

l@@20 iz& drew==10 LIZ BROOKS & DREW KONDIK MAY 6, 2017
Sure, Pinterest, The Knot, and magazines like MyNorth Wedding are all a wellspring of wedding ideas, but there is no substitute for practice making perfect. So, it is no surprise that Liz Kondik’s wedding was magical in every way. As the special events manager for the Grand Traverse Resort and Spa, Liz has supervised over 300 weddings in her career and knew exactly what she wanted when her own big day arrived. Elegant romance mixed with a little shabby chic drove Liz’s vision, as she used inspiration from the hundreds of weddings in her repertoire along with the knowledge of how to pull it off so everyone had a fabulous time. Paramount to design and cohesion, however, was Liz and Drew’s passion for the celebration of love and the sacrament that is marriage. No matter how many vows she’d heard exchanged, that was undiminished. In short, Liz knew not to sweat the small stuff. Even with her experience and a flawless plan, there is bound to be a hiccup or two. So when her one-of-a kind wooden cake topper went missing the day of the wedding (someone mistook the unmarked box for trash) Liz shrugged it off, focusing instead on the butterflies in her stomach every time she looked at her groom. A romantic himself, Drew had been dating Liz for seven years before catching her by total surprise one evening with a rose petal path to their yard covered in softly flickering candles. Flanked by their beloved dogs, he was down on one knee promising forever. Liz admits having her wedding at the Grand Traverse Resort and Spa was a nobrainer. With an abundance of accommodations, easy logistics, renowned restaurants and plenty of activities for guests, Liz’s firsthand experience only cemented what she knew the resort could offer. “It was a relief to be able to have it here and be on the receiving end,” says Liz. As the staff at Grand Traverse Resort treats each bride with care, Liz knew she would be very well taken care of. After the ceremony at Immaculate Conception Church in downtown Traverse City, the guests enjoyed exploring downtown Traverse City or resting in their beautifully appointed rooms at the resort. Meanwhile, a limo bus shuttled the wedding party to the resort’s exclusive beach, The Shores, for the must-have shore-side photographs. Afterward, the evening’s festivities commenced with a cocktail hour on the 17th Floor of the Resort Tower. The stunning views of the bay from one of the highest vantage points in Traverse City wowed the nearly 100 guests—many of whom had never before been Up North. From the cocktail party, guests moved to the main floor Tower Ballroom and awaited a stunning grand entrance by Liz and Drew. From a rustic farm table where they sat with the wedding party, the newlyweds presided over the gorgeous room festooned in creamy drapery and gold candelabras decked in boughs of woodland greenery. As Liz had planned, most of the traditional reception formalities took place early in the evening to make plenty of time for a relaxed party atmosphere that lasted well into the night. The following morning guests were treated to a farewell brunch back on the 17th floor of the Tower—the icing on the cake for a picture-perfect wedding.

The bride was so smitten with this dress from B. Ella Bridal in Plymouth that she wore it for over an hour in the shop. The bridal bouquet features coral reef roses, king protea, peonies, echiveria and eucalyptus. Fun cocktail hour dÊcor, like this tablecloth (with succulent centerpieces made at Darling Botanical during a bridal party), show off the couple’s playful side, while the floral arrangements, drapery and furniture highlight the romantic elegance of the reception. The Underground Cheesecake Company in Traverse City created a traditional-looking wedding cake that is actually a buttercream-frosted cheesecake—the couple’s favorite—and filled a dessert table with assorted delectables. The graceful elegance in the Ballroom is grounded by two huge farmhouse tables brought in for the head table and balanced by Derek Woodruff’s brilliant woodsy displays featuring Italian ruscus and ferns nestled between two grand candelabras. Liz and her father twirl to “The Best Is Yet to Come,” by Michael Bublé. The escort card table and notes of gratitude to wedding guests showcase classic grace and style.

$$8jordyn & chad==7 JORDYN SOMERVILLE & CHAD PETHERICK SEPTEMBER 29, 2017
Chad’s plan was to propose to Jordyn as they watched the sunrise over Lake Superior at a scenic spot a short hike away from where the couple was camping in the Apostle Islands. But he slept through his alarm. There was still time though, to catch the sunrise at a small beach behind their campsite. It was dark, and Jordyn was still half asleep. She didn’t notice him grab the GoPro and lean it against a rock near where they settled. A few minutes later Jordyn was saying, “Yes!” and the GoPro was catching it, sunrise and all. Flash forward one year later, almost to the day, to Castle Farms, a fairytale setting in Charlevoix, where Chad and Jordyn were wed. Jordyn had exchanged her rumpled camping clothes for a bridal gown. From the bejeweled bodice right down to her glittering Badgley Mischka heels, Jordyn sparkled. The couple’s decision to be married across Lake Michigan from their Wisconsin home was based on their shared love of Northern Michigan. Both Jordyn and Chad grew up in the mitten state, and Chad’s parents have a home in Elk Rapids. “We wanted a destination wedding but also didn’t want our families who live downstate to have to travel too far, so Up North felt like the best of both worlds,” Jordyn says. After exploring a number of venues, the couple was sold on Castle Farms for the staff ’s attention to detail and the fact that each couple is assigned their own wedding coordinator. Another winning point: “Castle Farms is so organically beautiful it doesn’t need a lot of decorations,” Jordyn says. Indeed, Castle Farms is an architectural jewel, built in 1918 by the then vice-president of Sears, Albert Loeb, as a state-of-the-art dairy farm. Working with local masons who used local stone, Loeb modeled the buildings after European castles and barns. The venue now houses five stunning wedding areas. Chad and Jordyn chose an area of the venue called the Knight's Castle, as it could accommodate their 200 guests. They also loved its cobblestone walls, wood-beamed ceilings and the fact that the room is separate from the rest of the castle and connected to a private courtyard with a stone chapel nestled within. In perfect keeping with the rustic stone building theme, the wedding party stayed in a Charlevoix landmark known as the Thatch House (for its genuine thatch roof ), which was constructed of stone by legendary builder Earl Young in the early 1900s. Chad and Jordyn stayed in the separate but attached chalet. Besides being picturesque, the lodging is just off Charlevoix’s sweet downtown, tucked between Lake Michigan and Round Lake/Lake Charlevoix. The rehearsal dinner at Tapawingo, an elegant venue near Charlevoix that is set on the bank of a small, serene lake, was followed by an after-party and meet-and-greet at East Park Tavern in downtown Charlevoix. In early afternoon of wedding day, the couple did their “first look” in the intimate setting of the Thatch House. Bridal party photos in the beautiful waterside park across the street immediately followed, and the session was wrapped up in time for the couple to enjoy pre-ceremony cocktails with their guests in the Knight's Castle. Jordyn and Chad were married on the steps of the stone chapel. Chad’s three young nephews, driving a toy pickup truck, delivered the couple their rings. “Since we didn’t have flower girls we wanted to make the boys more prominent,” says Jordyn. Needless to say, the trio almost drove away with the show. After the ceremony it was a short walk across the Knight’s Courtyard to the plated dinner. Dessert was Traverse City’s mega-popular Moomers Homemade Ice Cream, served in a cup or a cone. After that, the wedding party rocked the cobblestone walls to tunes courtesy of D.J. Ryan Rousseau. As the reception wound down, the newlyweds and their friends headed back to the Thatch House to continue the celebration into the wee hours.

They were fifth graders in the small town of Hartland, Michigan, when Alex passed Kate a note: Will you be my girlfriend? Circle yes or no. Kate circled yes. The gradeschool romance was short lived, but Alex and Kate remained friends through high school and college, though each pursued different relationships. Kate says the timing was never right, but Alex maintains that Kate was always the girl he was thinking about; the one he wanted to marry. Fifteen years after that fifth-grade note, Alex got another chance to ask Kate out, and this time the timing was perfect. Six months later Alex proposed on the foursquare court at their old grade school by writing “Will you marry me?” in sidewalk chalk. Alex maintains the seeds of their romance were sown in the fifth grade, Kate says they fell in love during their first getaway together to Leelanau County, where Alex’s parents now call home. Needless to say, when it came to planning the wedding, it was essential that their guests got to experience the “Up North” that had sparked such a remarkable love story. When Kate’s mom, an event planner for University of Michigan, told them about Willowbrook Mill in Northport—one of their favorite Leelanau County villages—the couple immediately went to check it out. The venue, a 140-year-old building suspended over the purling Northport Creek, had precisely the whimsy and charm they imagined. But their wedding date was still two years away, and the owners of Willowbrook Mill had bad news: It was on the market. Kate was crushed. Enter Mimi Heberlein and her family, who purchased the venue in early 2016. When she heard the news, Kate called immediately, securing her date as the new owners’ first reservation. As the couple was to find out, their dream venue now came with the knowledgeable and friendly assistance of owner Mimi Heberlein and her daughter, Samantha Heberlein. Kate and Alex exchanged vows in the wooden gazebo that overlooks the picturesque Northport Marina. Decorated with draped linens and hops swags and set with old church pews, the gazebo was a simple, romantic setting for the intimate ceremony in which the couple exchanged vows that they’d written themselves. After the ceremony, the newlyweds and their wedding guests made the leisurely walk through Northport’s storybook-sweet downtown and across the hops and tulleadorned bridge to Willowbrook Mill. The ballroom rafters were strung with hundreds of white fairy lights, and the tables were strewn with eucalyptus garlands and white roses, creating a rustic yet elegant setting that continued throughout the venue. The three stone fireplaces, the handcrafted apple and cherry branch chandeliers in the Porch Bar and the lovely Creekside Patio offered guests several perfect spaces to gather and chat with friends and family during the celebration. The reception’s Michigan-centric theme included craft Michigan beer and local wine. The owner of the Northport-based florist, Field of Flowers North, grew most of the arrangements in her yard, while Abundance Catering sourced everything locally for the pork loin dinner. The romance of Willowbrook Mill, the spectacular ceremony in the marina park, the quaint Northport Inn where some guests stayed, all combined to leave Alex and Kate’s friends and family awed at the beauty of this Lake Michigan village. It was truly an unparalleled setting for a new chapter in this love story.

$$7kirstyn & erik==7 KIRSTYN WADE & ERIK LOVE DECEMBER 17, 2016
Perhaps it stands to reason that a musician with the last name of Love would be a romantic. Erik Love and Kirstyn Wade had been living together for several years when Erik, a music teacher, broached the subject of marriage. Kirstyn, a nurse, demonstrated her practical side. “What’s the point? I know I love you and am committed to you,” she recalls saying with a laugh. When Erik didn’t give up, she finally told him, “Okay, if you can move the stars I’ll marry you.” So he did. On an October day in 2015 Erik and Kirstyn set out for the local park with their dog, Juno, whom they loveingly refer to as their 50-pound mystery mutt. The ruse? That Erik’s friend, a videographer, was interviewing Kirstyn for a spot about adopting rescue dogs (a thoughtful touch by Erik, as it meant Kirstyn dressed up a bit more than usual to walk their dog). Unbeknownst to Kirstyn, as the interview proceeded, their friends were busy mounting a sign nearby. Made by Erik, it read I Love You—in cutout stars lit by tealights. When all was ready, the videographer turned his camera to catch the proposal. Erik had brought Kirstyn the stars. Now to plan the wedding! The couple knew they wanted to be married Up North—where her parents and grandparents live and where they vacation often. They also knew that October was late to be planning a wedding for the summer. Some calls later, they realized they could have their pick of just about any venue—in the winter! Kirstyn loves the coziness of the holidays and the time leading up to it, so a December wedding sounded perfect. After Kirstyn’s grandparents told them about the Leland Lodge, tucked into the picture-perfect Lake Michigan harbor town of Leland, their plans fell into place. The couple booked the entire lodge for the weekend of their December wedding,— planning to hold both the ceremony and the reception at the lodge. With 18 lodge rooms there was plenty of room for the bridal party and many of the 85 guests who attended. (Most of the others stayed at the nearby Lodge at Leelanau Sands Casino and were shuttled back and forth.) From beginning to end the staff at the Leland Lodge went out of their way to assure that the bridal party and guests felt completely comfortable. The festivities began Friday night with a relaxed rehearsal dinner at the Bluebird Restaurant and Tavern a couple of blocks away from The Leland Lodge. Afterward, the bridal party returned to the lodge for a meet-and-greet with drinks and appetizers. Guests woke up on the wedding day to find complimentary coffee and muffins waiting for them in the lobby. Since the wedding attendees were the only guests at the lodge, “We all hung out on the lobby couches in our pjs and ate and had our coffee,” Kirstyn says. After the lovely ceremony, the newlyweds went down to the Lake Michigan beach for photos—a chilly but stunningly beautiful experience given the falling snow. Meanwhile, guests were enjoying cocktails at the lodge as the staff prepared the reception area for a plated dinner of roast chicken, white fish and veggie lasagna. As the crazy-fun evening of dancing to the music of UpNorth DJs wound down, the couple and their friends and family who were still awake hung out together in the lobby and guest rooms. In the morning it was more coffee and muffins in the lobby where the goodbyes were warmed by the intimate bonding experience, courtesy of the Leland Lodge. “It was like the largest cabin ever—with a staff,” Erik says.

When your boyfriend is Senior Manager for Digital Operations at Marvel Studios (Thor 3: Ragnarok, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Captain America: Civil War ...) you can expect his romantic side to have an element of the make-believe. Such as the plastic diamond ring Bryan gave Angie on her first trip to meet his family in the Midwest. His young niece had given it to him years before and told him to give it to his girlfriend. He wasn’t dating anyone at the time, but he promised his niece he would save it for someone special. He hung on to the ring for three years, until he met Angie—that someone special. Angie still thinks of that as the real proposal, since she knew from that moment that she wanted to marry him. Flash-forward two years to an outing together on a beach near the couple’s Los Angeles home. Angie turned around to find Bryan down on one knee ... she began to tear up ... from behind his back he pulled out ... a stuffed Gerald-the-seal (from Finding Dory, a movie they’d recently watched together). Ooops! Flustered, Angie started packing their things. And then he was down on one knee again, this time with a ring box that held a real diamond ring. Things got real after that—in a good way. Angie, who was raised in California (and is a Division Manager at the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine), had fallen in love with Traverse City, where Bryan was raised and where his parents still live. She wanted her family, all from the L.A. area, to visit and what better reason than their wedding? While researching venues in the Traverse City area, the couple came across The Ridge at Verterra Vineyards. The couple knew they wanted their wedding to be an intimate, elegant low-key event—and definitely outdoors. The Ridge would make that possible and more. As its name implies, the venue is set on a ridge in the Verterra vineyards—with a view overlooking Grand Traverse Bay. Outfitted with a state-of-theart reception terrace that can be covered with a tent, and a beautiful new building that houses a wedding lounge, catering prep area and restrooms, the venue offered an outdoor event with the comforts of an indoor one. The venue also came with plenty of space for an inclusive event—ceremony, cocktail hour, lawn games and reception. “That setting is so beautiful,” Angie says. “You wouldn’t want to go anywhere else.” Bryan’s best friend from college, Izzy Weiss, officiated at the ceremony (set in the natural amphitheater at the edge of a pond on the property), and yes, there were some plastic ring/stuffed seal anecdotes woven into his words ... after cocktails and lawn games, a plated dinner was served under the tent. Catered by Trattoria Stella (where Bryan’s sister, Kelsey Parker works), the menu featured poached halibut with white wine beurre blanc and marinated, char-grilled beef tenderloin, followed by a dessert of blondies, and tarts. The staff at Verterra vineyards worked with the couple to pair estate wines with the courses—Tasting Room & Events Manager Lindy Kellogg even attended the menu tasting at Stella’s with Angie and Bryan. As a fun snack after the dancing started, Angie and Bryan cut a heart-shaped pizza and handed it out. Guests loved it. They also loved the piece of Grand Traverse Pie Company cherry pie that was packed and ready for them to take home as a wedding favor. It was a sweet way to end an enchanted day.

A retro wine bar sets the mood for the ceremony. Event designer Meaghan Keck of Birch Affair, who orchestrated the shoot, terms the style vindustrial—vintage meets industrial. Thus the miniature truck holding an old tin can set on a cement wall. The bouquet is a wonderful medley of Northern Michigan hops, cabbage, blackberry vines, grape clusters (cut fresh from the vineyard) and, from downstate, hydrangea, ivy and mini melons. The flowers are paper, handmade by Keck.

Married UpNorth A young wife shares what it felt like to be married in her favorite place in the world—and then leave. MARIA LACROSS O'KORN
It was National Cherry Festival time in Northern Michigan, and I was the current Cherry Queen. Having just moved to Traverse City for his first tour of duty, my now-husband Jim purchased a newspaper to get a sense of what his newfound community was all about. According to the legend of what has now become the story of how we met, Jim opened the newspaper, looked at my picture on the front page and said to himself, “I’m going to marry that girl.” After meeting during a chance encounter one evening two years later, I knew very quickly that, indeed, I was going to marry this man. After Jim dropped down on one knee and asked me to marry him with the water of Tahquamenon Falls roaring in the background, my brother Ben and sister-in-law Kelsey held an engagement party to celebrate. As part of the entertainment for the celebration, Kelsey asked us a series of questions related to our relationship and our upcoming nuptials. One question she asked Jim was: “What is Maria’s biggest non-negotiable for the wedding?” His answer: “That we get married in Northern Michigan.” Northern Michigan is a part of me: a significant aspect of my identity has been that of a small-town girl raised amidst the rolling hills and fragrant blooms of our cherry orchards. The ideals garnered from my upbringing in Leelanau County gave me a sense of groundedness that comes from the humble, hard-working family, friends, and neighbors by whom I was surrounded. To many of us who live here, it’s a place unlike any other; a place so cherished that leaving would be unfathomable. Jim realized quickly how much of my identity was connected to this area, and as we fell more deeply in love, it began to mean something very precious to him as well. Our love grew while hiking in the woods behind his house in Holiday Hills; cuddling together during the many snowy months; renovating a home on Tenth Street; and navigating the beautiful terrain of the UP on camping adventures. When I look back at the nascent moments of our relationship, the background of it all is the brilliant, clear sky and the serene, restorative waters of Northern Michigan that allowed us to feel at peace with each other. The substantial, rooted earth we were traversing gave us permission to open up and truly uncover our genuine selves to each other, and we wanted our wedding guests to feel the incredible connection of people and place that only Northern Michigan can provide. I never anticipated that falling in love would inevitably take me from the place that has shaped me, but life’s journey often leads in unexpected directions. Jim’s commitment as an officer in the US Coast Guard meant that marrying him would necessitate that I uproot my life and move with him throughout his career. The conflictedness I felt about this reality presented a significant stumbling block in our otherwise solid relationship.
Marrying Jim meant I would be leaving almost everything I’ve known and loved—my family, my friends, and my dream job teaching high school English. Before we met and fell in love, the idea of living anywhere other than in this magnificent community seemed absurd. However, while my love for my native homeland ran deep, my love for this man eclipsed my desire to stay in Northern Michigan, with one stipulation: after our time in the Coast Guard is complete, we will move back to raise our family. With this understanding and with trust that we would be able to navigate the challenges of life in the military together, we looked to the future and began planning our special day. Our wedding would fall on a mild day in late June, just two weeks before we were scheduled to move to New Jersey. That meant that not only would this be a celebration of our union, but also a farewell to the people and place I hold so incredibly dear. Additionally, many of Jim’s military friends and his family from Ohio had never been to Northern Michigan, so we were determined that our celebration would reflect the beauty, dignity, and spirit of this remarkable area and our connection to it as a couple. With picturesque landscapes at nearly every bend in the road, we felt compelled to hold our reception on the shoreline of Leelanau County’s fresh waters. While solidifying our union within the Catholic Church was our first priority for our wedding, an evening in the fresh air was what we wanted to follow such a beautiful, sacred event. Therefore, my family’s lakefront property on south Lake Leelanau would serve as our reception venue: the same waters in which I learned to swim would provide the backdrop for our memorable night. Logistically, holding our wedding reception on our own property meant starting from the ground up, securing the necessary vendors to ensure a tremendous evening for all. Living in a close-knit community causes the roles of the people we know to change with events and seasons in our lives. Being connected to people in this area helped us to utilize the creativity and expertise of many: a former student of mine helped to masterfully coordinate our wedding; a family friend and neighbor was the priest who counseled us as we prepared for our marriage and also celebrated our nuptial mass; a fellow Coast Guard pilot assisted in conducting a thrilling helicopter flyover as we exited Holy Rosary Church. Two years later, our friends and family still reflect on our wedding day with fond appreciation for what it meant to everyone— Northern Michigan residents and newcomers alike. While it was one of our last days as residents, it was a day Jim and I will carry with us, with gratitude for the place and the people who have truly shaped our marriage. To us, Northern Michigan is the place where we met, fell in love and married, and we feel fortunate to always be able to say it is where our story began.

The woods behind the enchanting Village at Grand Traverse Commons—where the couple had so often hiked and shared their innermost thoughts—was where Max Steinbauer proposed to Nicole Martell, the love of his life. In the presence of a hundred beloved guests, Nicole and Max were wed on June 10, 2017, in the picturesque village of Lake Ann, on the outskirts of Traverse City. The ceremony took place under an open-air pavilion at the Lake Ann Township Park and included a sand-unity ritual. The bride carried a bouquet of silk hydrangeas and vintage jewelry donated from family and friends and made by her mother, Jill Hayes. The reception in the charming Lake Ann Township Hall included a buffet dinner and an evening of dancing and laughter. The couple wishes to express their gratitude to the family and friends who assisted in decorating and set-up of the hall. For more on this wedding: MyNorth.com/WeddingAnnouncementSteinbauer

Ben Watson proposed to Rachel Dorie atop breathtaking Pyramid Point in the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. The setting was perfect for the high school sweethearts who were both raised in Northern Michigan. The couple was united in marriage on September 16, 2017, at Traverse City’s Hagerty Center. Grand Traverse Bay made a perfect backdrop for their outdoor ceremony on the center’s grounds. Afterward, the 170 close friends and family in attendance were ushered inside to the waterfront reception room to enjoy a lovely buffet dinner prepared by the Great Lakes Culinary Institute. A lively, fun night of dancing fueled by pizza and raspberry mousse closed out the evening. For more on this wedding: MyNorth.com/WeddingAnnouncementWatson

With a romantic Maui engagement (sunrise at Haleakala National Park) to launch their life together, Annette Niergarth and Cody Pattison headed to their home state to be wed. With 160 of the couple’s closest friends and family members looking on, Annette married Cody on October 7, 2017, at the renovated historic Starry Night Barn in Suttons Bay, Michigan. The non-traditional ceremony took place in the tree-fringed field behind the barn and included the tying of a fisherman’s knot to symbolize the couple’s unity. A light autumn rain held off long enough for the ceremony and pictures to be completed, and for guests to enjoy cocktails and yard games. As falling rain hummed on the barn’s metal roof, the bridal party and guests enjoyed an intimate evening that moved from dinner to dancing beneath the ancient rafters. helsea and Layton were both born and raised in the Traverse City area—though since they attended different high schools and he is two years older, they never met. They both left for college, they both traveled, he lived in Washington, D.C., for a couple of years. They both knew the world has a lot of spectacular places but none quite like Northern Michigan. She came back first, in 2014, to run for the title of National Cherry Queen. She won and represented Northern Michigan’s storied cherry industry for a year. Layton got a job in oil exploration and moved back a year or so later. Layton doesn’t gush about it or anything, but he does cut right to the point. Soon after moving back he walked into a party that a friend had invited him to and locked eyes with a young woman sitting across the room on a sofa.

fairy tale
It was Chelsea and it was love at first sight—for both of them. It didn’t take long before they both knew they wanted a life together. And they wanted it in Northern Michigan. He popped the question at the bench at Clay Cliffs, a scenic conservancy tract near Leland that overlooks Lake Michigan where they’d gone on one of their first dates. Layton planned the proposal for a February day, set after Valentine's Day and before Chelsea’s birthday on March 2—he didn’t want to confuse any holidays with this special day! Not only did he want to surprise her, but he wanted her parents there ahead of time, hiding in the trees, so they could take pictures. Pulling it off, however, took some doing because, as Layton says, Chelsea doesn’t miss much. “She is very intuitive and she was also a psychology major. I had to have her parents under false names in my phone.” Whether she had an inkling or not didn’t matter. Chelsea was beyond thrilled. So the search for the perfect venue began. It didn’t take long to realize that if they were married on a Sunday they’d have more options, and the Sunday of Labor Day Weekend meant their out-of-town guests would have an extra day before they had to get back to work ...

Then, almost by chance, Chelsea heard about the Elberta Life Saving Station in the teeny, tiny town of Elberta, just south of Frankfort. Were the grounds roomy enough for a 200+ ceremony and reception? Check. Was the venue by the water? It is on Betsie Lake, which flows into Lake Michigan just a beachwalk away. So, check. Was it available on Sunday, September 3, 2017? Check, again. Did it have that extra, romantic something? Yes, in spades. The renovated 19th-century building exudes vintage nautical style. The adjacent town of Frankfort was ground central for the festivities. Many of the out-of-town guests stayed at the historic Hotel Frankfort or down the street at the Harbor Lights Resort—lodging that put them close to beaches, shops, hiking trails and the ever-beloved Stormcloud Brewing Company. As their friends and family looked on, Chelsea and Layton were married on the Life Saving Station’s lawn, just steps away from the deep-blue waters of

fairy tale Betsie Lake. After, the couple and their bridal party took photos on the station grounds and also on the Lake Michigan beach just a minute’s drive away. Meanwhile, their guests were at the bar set up in the Life Saving Station, enjoying cocktails on the deck, with its gorgeous view of Betsie Lake and Frankfort across the water. As the couple’s family and friends chatted and sipped, a string trio played soft jazz. At the reception, just steps away in a huge tent, everyone enjoyed a delicious plated dinner that included some very memorable gouda-mashed-potatoes and was followed by dancing that lasted until nearly midnight. From the guests who live in Northern Michigan to those who where visiting for the first time, everyone had fallen under the spell of the star-filled Northern Michigan sky that spread over this enchanted affair.
