Sometimes We All Need A Little Ice Cream

As I was searching on what to write about this month, I came across this beautiful story that really says it all. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Last week I took my children to a restaurant. My six-year-old son asked if he could say grace. As we bowed our heads he said, “God is good, God is great, thank you for the food, and I would even thank you more if Mom gets us ice cream for dessert, and Liberty and justice for all! Amen!” Along with the laughter from the other customers nearby, I heard a woman remark, “That’s what’s wrong with this country. Kids today don’t even know how to pray. Asking God for ice cream! Why, I never!”

Happy

Holidays

Hearing this, my son burst into tears and asked me, “Did I do it wrong? Is God mad at me?” As I held him and assured him that he had done a terrific job, and that God was certainly not mad at him, an elderly gentleman approached the table. He winked at my son and said, “I happen to know that God thought that was a great prayer. “Really?” my son asked. “Cross my heart,” the man replied. Then in a theatrical whisper he added (indicating the woman whose remark had started this whole thing), “Too bad she never asks God for ice cream. A little ice cream is good for the soul sometimes.” Naturally, I bought my kids ice cream at the end of the meal. When it came, my son stared at his for a moment, and then did something I will remember the rest of my life. He picked up his sundae and without a word, walked over and placed it in front of the woman. With a big smile he told her, “Here, this is for you. Ice cream is good for the soul sometimes; and my soul is good already.”

I hope God sends you some Ice Cream today!

Let There Be Peace On Earth • God Bless The World A Tribute To Those Hurt In The Resent Tragedies. Life changing events happen to us many times throughout our lives. The experiences we have and what we choose to do with them is what matters most. Being kind and nonjudgmental can sometimes be a difficult thing to do. Fear is our number one enemy. Today walk forward without fear, know that you are safe, and have the strength and courage to live your life, despite what happens around you. My prayers go out to all of those who have felt and continue to feel the impact of the tragedies that surround us. Have a very peaceful holiday,

For the Next Seven Generations A Grandmother’s Prayer

I

By Elaine Grohman

n October 2004, women from around the globe attended an event, “The Global Women’s Gathering: Indigenous and Western Women align their Wisdom.” There, many women, including thirteen indigenous grandmothers from the four directions of Mother Earth, came together in an unprecedented gathering of wisdom, compassion, prayer and healing. These women, now collectively known as The International Council of Thirteen Indigenous Grandmothers, set forth a mission to help bring humanity back to its senses, to open our minds and our hearts to the truth of our existence, the preciousness of life, and the sacredness of Mother Earth, upon whose body we stand upon each and every day. These remarkable women, each in her own place of origin on the globe, received the same prophetic words. Ultimately, over time, they came together to form an unshakable bond of maternal truth and integrity. The truth of the collective message that they received touched their hearts deeply. They were told that “Mother Earth is in agony, and that they must come forward now to help us heal her and all her inhabitants.” They were told that “nothing will change, unless we change. All of us.” (An excerpt from the awardwinning documentary, “For the Next 7 Generations.”) As I sit here writing this article, one of my own precious grandchildren sits by my side. Her love of life exudes from her, and her precious voice deserves to be heard, now and into the future. As a grandmother, I know that it is our responsibility to work to make her future, and the future of all children, not only bright, but also safe and secure. There is little doubt that there are real and dangerous challenges that we face in our world today. Shamefully, for as long as we can recall in our history, we have been scarred with unnecessary violence, segregation, inequality and the destruction of Earth’s natural resources, without regard for the ultimate loss that we will face—our own lack of humanity towards one another, ourselves, and the loss of Mother Earth’s bounty that sustains our very lives. The untold heartache of senseless acts of violence cause us to collectively shake our heads in disbelief, wondering how

12 | Eydís Magazine

on Earth people could ever do such things to one another. And it is here where we must start asking difficult questions and expecting honest answers. From our leaders. From our preachers. From our teachers. From ourselves. As both a mother and a grandmother, I know that I must be willing to stand up for what is right and good so that future generations, the future of our children and grandchildren, can be a future that is bright. A future where they will be able to inhabit an Earth that is free of fear. I hope that you have the same conviction. We must lead by our conscious examples, in everything we do, think, and say. Selfresponsibility must become the hallmark of every human being. We must learn to be self-responsible, not merely self-reliable. Self-responsibility is not exclusive to the self, but rather broadens our field of vision so that we include the whole of humanity, who, like ourselves, have the right to a happy, loving, and productive life. As I sit and listen to my grandchildren, my heart longs to be able to listen to their adult voices one day in the future. And I want those voices to be able to say to me, “Thank you Nana, for being willing to show us how to care for ourselves and our Earth.” I have tried to teach this certain truth to my own children, and I have seen, often through tear filled eyes, that my children have learned this lesson from their Mama. And as they work toward the betterment of the lives of their children, I know that someday they too will be grandparents of amazing human beings. And I pray, with all of my heart, that we will have listened to the wisdom of the Thirteen Indigenous Grandmothers, whose love and compassion for life is shared by me. Benefits of Massage Therapy By Margot Kohler A widespread perception, or misconception, is that massage therapy is a luxury, one which is reserved for special occasions or when we sustain an injury. While cultures throughout Europe and other parts of the world know otherwise, it is time we change our perception of this beneficial and holistic therapy. The medical profession is slowly accepting massage therapy as a complimentary treatment to traditional medicine, and will hopefully support it as preventative medicine in the future. The benefits offered by massage therapy are numerous and have been proven to offer results. Knowing and understanding these advantages will hopefully offer you the incentive for investing in better health and well being.

What would change if you give the gift of Margot?

A few benefits of massage therapy include: Stress Reduction: Massage therapy affects our hormones, reducing the “stress” hormone known as cortisol, while also increasing the “happy” hormones of dopamine and serotonin, helping to decrease anxiety and depression. Increased Circulation: It also assists with lymphatic drainage and flushing toxins from the system. This enhanced vascular function can help reduce fatigue, promote healthier skin and hair, and strengthen the immune system. Pain Relief: A safe alternative to prescription medication, massage has proven to lessen back pain and increase function for those suffering from chronic muscle tension and spasms. The release of endorphins work in the body to help as a natural pain reliever. Enhanced Skin Condition: In addition to improving the condition of the body’s largest organ, massage also helps promote tissue regeneration to reduce stretch marks, scar tissue, and post surgical adhesions and swelling. Joint Health: Not only for injuries, massage helps to increase range of motion by decreasing joint stiffness and pain. Those suffering from arthritis and bursitis benefit greatly from massage therapy. Enhanced Sleep Quality: Not just during a massage, but afterwards, is when you can experience the best sleep. Some say that massage directly affects our delta waves, promoting a deeper and sounder sleep. In addition, some medical fields have begun integrating massage therapy into the treatment of carpel tunnel, chronic fatigue, premenstrual syndromes, migraines, and asthma. There has also been an increase in maternity massage, infant massage, and massage therapy combined together with physical therapy. The healing benefits affect not only the body, but the mind and spirit, promoting overall physical and mental balance. As a treatment or for preventative measures, prioritize your health and consider investing in your own well being. It may be the best investment you will ever make.

Everything. Choose from our many gifts of wellness and beauty. A wealth of holiday gift choices awaits you. Visit us online for a full selection. margots.com

Serendipity by Adria DeAngelis Veit

W

e turn our focus to the colder weather and the seasonal holiday time of the year with a multitude of mixed emotions. They range from anticipation to joy, and are accompanied by all of the planning details that fuel our adrenaline levels. We find ourselves wanting to change it up from the previous year and do even more: celebrate, decorate, simplify, spend time with different people, more people, attend more festivities, or find time to partake in peaceful moments. There couldn’t be a more appropriate time of the year to create a new tradition where you are responsible for its original presentation. Others will marvel at your creativity and will wonder why you have waited so long to initiate such a great tradition. This tradition will not only be so well received that all that know you who share in the joy will not want to celebrate it just during the holidays, you will now be known for starting a new trend. Your new tradition will be celebrated all year long! You are so smart! Brace yourself for repetition; you will be asked over and over again what took you so long to come up with this idea. You may feel humble and maybe even a bit uncomfortable, blushing, looking down. or even better, making perfect eye contact and smiling upon answering. This year you have decided to take time to celebrate yourself and your individuality! Yes, that’s right; you have made the wise decision to celebrate yourself! What a fantastic tradition to begin, and one to never end. Don’t hesitate to explain when asked how long overdue this tradition has been. Your interior design skills are about to reach an all-time high. You are unique, one of a kind! Take hold of that concept and run with it. Just wait until you’re asked for some decorating ideas. You have one that will leave everyone in awe…your personality. Your laughter is a must and is the root of your entire theme. Please don’t skimp on the extra touches. This is not the year to be frugal; begin with a bang! You are spoiling yourself by acknowledging how special you are. You have decided that the decorations of life that made you fit in and belong in a group are tired and old. You have stepped out of your comfort zone and decided to stand out knowing how much lighter life feels to do what makes you happy.

20 | Eydís Magazine

Those little curves that decorate your body, the ones that you keep focusing on when you’re at the gym and wish would go away, they have now become new best friends. Of course, as friends go, some stay around for a long time and others fade away. If these friends decide to stay, you have come to an amazing realization that they are invaluable friends and make you who you are. Beautiful! You have never liked the darkness and have always relished in the importance of light. Your decorating touch is truly amazing. You generously share your light by illuminating the lives of others with your confidence of what it means to be true to yourself. Not only have you increased your ability to share, you motivate others too! Finally, you have noticed yourself by celebrating yourself! You have reached a new understanding of what it means to have arrived. You are present in your own life! The words early or late do not apply. You never need an appointment, you are not required to plan ahead, and you don’t have to wait for anyone else. Even better, you don’t ever have to ask for directions on how to get there! Enjoy creating your new holiday tradition this year, the tradition that celebrates YOU! Your decorations will continue to impress all. Love your sparkle! Please don’t ever forget the most important decoration of all; it’s the glow of your heart that makes YOU the reason to celebrate the outstanding individual you are.

Thank you for being YOU!

My skin products aren’t moisturizing enough with the cooler weather. What do you suggest?

A

With winter arriving, our thoughts turn to the holiday festivities, being with family, sledding, and that oh so dry, extremely itchy, winter skin. Now you don’t have to get caught in that vicious and irritating itch-scratch cycle because there are so many options out there to keep the calm before a storm can even appear. EXFOLIATE

Your skin sheds thousands of dead cells on a daily basis, which can slow down as we age and cause a build-up of dry, itchy skin. Exfoliating helps to remove these dead cells, smooth wrinkles, and allows you to say goodbye to that uncomfortable dry skin. AHA exfoliants add moisture to the surface, aiding in the repair of sun damage and dryness. BHA exfoliants have antiinflammatory agents beneficial to skin that is oily, and acne and blackhead prone. Exfoliate a few times weekly and, if using a retinoid, use it at night only. Once the exfoliating product has absorbed into the skin, continue with the rest of your skin care regiment. A great non-chemical exfoliation process is with the Clarisonic. Only use that 5x a week as to not overdo the tissue.

HYDRATE (HUMECTANTS)

Humectants work as a sort of moisture magnet, pulling moisture from the air to your skin. Humectants also pull moisture from the dermis into the epidermis. If there isn’t more than 70 percent humidity in a house with a running furnace, than there isn’t enough moisture for the body to do its job properly. One major and beneficial thing you can do for your dry, itchy skin is to invest in a humidifier. Humectants to look for when purchasing a skincare product are hyaluronic acid, propylene glycerol, urea, panthenol, lactic acid, seaweed, glycerin, PCA, and glycosaminoglycan, which all promote the retention of water in the skin. Humectants are also beneficial in reducing irritation by preventing the skin from cracking by holding the skin cells together and helping the skin retain the proper moisture it needs. Holly CaSaroll, skin guru of FACE, recommends products containing hyaluronic acid because it’s “water binding and holds 1000x its weight

in water, which is so beneficial and vital for skin moisture.” Most dry winter skin lacks moisture more than oils, which is why humectants and moisturizers are desperately needed.

ANTI-IRRITANTS/ SOOTHING AGENTS

You can get these ingredients in any type of product, whether it be a toner, serum, or moisturizer. Look for soothing ingredients such as aloe, oat bran, chamomile, cucumber, rose hip oil, allantoin, burdock root, licorice root, and glycyrrhetinic acid. One easy way to get these is in a wellformulated toner. This step is often underrated, misunderstood, and forgotten. Yet using a toner can immediately restore the pH balance of the skin, remove metals and other toxic ingredients from water residue on the face, give you a thorough cleansing, and can be very beneficial in combatting that dry facial skin.

ANTIOXIDANTS

These protect the skin from harmful free radicals. They also help protect from exposure to the sun, skin damage, signs of aging, and pigment change. Antioxidants can already be found in some moisturizers due to their hydrating effect, and can protect the skin’s cell membranes, so they are an essential element to look for in your skin care products. Look for products that contain vitamin A, CoQ10, green tea, grape seed extract, plant oils, alpha lipoic acid, beta-glucan, soybean sterols, superoxide dismutase, vitamin C (ascorbyl palmitate and magnesium ascorbyl palmitate), and vitamin E (alpha tocopherol, tocotrienols). These have free radical fighting super-powers that are necessary in skin health, as well as help combating that winter dry flaky skin.

EMOLLIENTS

Emollients provide some occlusivity and improves the appearance of the skin by smoothing flaky skin cells. Products containing lactic acid, shea butter, fatty acids, plant or mineral oils, or olive oil are what you should look for when purchasing an emollient. Shea butter, in particular, gets right down into the deeper layer of skin. It improves moisture levels, as well as minimizes lines and wrinkles.

OCCLUSIVE AGENTS / BARRIER REPAIR

These products increase moisture levels by providing an actual physical barrier, which prevents the loss of water from the epidermis. Products that contain pharmaceutical-grade mineral oil, ceramides, beeswax, silicone, cholesterol, fatty acids, and vegetable oils such as avocado or olive are some of the ingredients to look for when choosing a barrier repair product. Most of these ingredients should be avoided for oily and acne-prone skin. When there are many types of products and ingredients you can buy, it is better to follow the advice of your skincare professional who can guide you there quickly and without the hassle of figuring it out on your own and wasting your money. If you live by the words exfoliate, hydrate, and protect, the only thing you’ll have to worry about during the winter is where to go on vacation to show off your silky smooth skin. DR. BONITA YAPA

24 | Eydís Magazine

Beauty Renewed by Mary Meldrum Photography by Steve Ragland

WELCOME TO THE OFFICE

The moment you walk in the doors of Dr. Bonita Renee Yapa’s Southfield dental office, you are in a peaceful environment. She smiles and says, “We strive to keep this a relaxing, spa-like setting.” The lights are dim and the music is soothing. Testimonials gush about the ambiance being comfortable, professional, painless, and peaceful, and are validated by the smiling patients coming in the front door who seem genuinely happy to be here. “My philosophy is that this is my home away from home, and I want you to feel like you are sitting in my living room,” she shares. “We convey old fashioned hospitality with modern technology.”

At the end of her long day in Southfield, where she sees her dental patients, Dr. Yapa drives to Flint to an organization called Family Literacy. There she mentors groups of young, single women, between the ages of 18 and 25, who are working on their GED and have two or more children. “These are young women whose self-esteem is not where it should be. They may have been physically abused or there may be something going on with them that has prevented them from reaching the level of confidence and education they should have had by their late teens. What typically causes young women to engage in risky behavior or have children at a young age is that they are simply looking for

Dr. Yapa is a general dentist who does surgical extractions, routine cleanings, fillings, crowns, bridges, periodontal assessments, dentures, partials, some implants, root canals, and complete oral cancer exams. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from Wayne State University before attending dental school at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Dr. Yapa began her dental career 25 years ago in Ravenswood, Illinois. She then left Chicago and came to Michigan to continue her practice with other dental offices; finally hanging her own shingle in Southfield. Her practice has grown steadily since then.

FAMILY AND FAITH

“I love dentistry, but my passion is mentoring,” shares Dr. Yapa. “I want to leave a legacy.” Dr. Yapa intends to build that legacy to benefit her daughters, as well as subsequent generations of young mothers and their children. “I haven’t started a foundation yet but I am speaking to people about it.” Black and white dress by Ted Baker $279, Nordstrom Jewelry courtesy of Stella and Dot Red and black floral dress by DVF $478, Nordstrom Jewelry courtesy of Stella and Dot

love,” clarifies Dr. Yapa. She goes on to point out that falling off the track of education at an early age can attribute to a young girls’ failed selfesteem. They have not heard the right messages about their abilities and feel like they cannot achieve what they want in life. Dr. Yapa helps them lay out a plan for their future and set goals for that plan. She gives them a worksheet and they walk through setting up a strategic plan to accomplish those goals. They discuss obstacles and the pathway for their eventual success. Faith provides the foundational underpinnings of her teachings to these under-educated women. She stresses “faith in yourself and faith in the Lord, as well as prayer and perseverance, are important in this recipe.” For these young mothers, who typically have little to no safety net or support, faith is sometimes the last knot at the end of an unraveling rope that they can cling to. Raised by two educators, Dr. Yapa has a deep appreciation for the doors that education can open and how far it can take you. She is not just referring to money. There is a certain amount of self-respect that comes along with higher educational achievement that can buoy a person through difficult times. Her family had a lot to do with how she navigated her life and her career. “Had my parents not instilled in me the value of an education, I am not sure where I would be now,” explains Dr Yapa. “My dad could tackle anything: math, chemistry, physics, biology, English; it just didn’t matter. He could do it all. My parents were both so great.”

They instilled in young Bonita Yapa the belief that she could learn and achieve anything she set her mind to. When asked why she chose to become a dentist, she simply explained; “Because there were no female dentists.” While

that is usually the reason why someone might not push in a certain career direction, Bonita saw it as something that needed to be fulfilled. So without a role model or a mentor to help her, she successfully set out under her own power to become a dentist.

THE BIG PICTURE

“These young mothers in Flint are a very important group of people. They still have so much life ahead of them,” Dr. Yapa conveys. With the help of Family Literacy and Dr. Yapa, the young mothers now have an enormous opportunity to turn things around and light the world on fire with their spirit and knowledge. The opportunity is multiplied by the fact that the power of influence immediately and directly impacts their children at the same time. “These young ladies are so engaged,” related Dr. Yapa. “I would like to use my skills as a dentist to open up a dental facility in Flint, where I would have an opportunity to take care of and teach young ladies how to dress, how to communicate, and teach them etiquette. I want to provide them with some basic life skills, some knowledge, and give them some hope that will help them progress toward their goals.” Basic skills include good posture, communication, confidence, conservative dress, and self-respect; all of the things that go into building self-esteem in young ladies who will project fortitude and certainty in a job interview and in their daily life. Dr. Yapa is devoted to this work. The spark that lit her dedication to these young women came several years ago during her divorce. She explains that, at the time, although she had a wonderful upbringing and education, her selfesteem was not very high. It was during this time that she realized that there are so many women just like her. Once she was stronger, she resolved to put her time and energy into helping other young, single women get on their feet. It is easy to pick up on the depth of empathy that pours out of Dr. Yapa. Her drive to go further, to expand, and to make a difference in the world is obvious through her energetic explanation and the way her eyes sparkle when she talks about the young mothers in Flint. “God wanted me to take this path and to help young women understand the course they need to take to be healthy, to be productive, and to serve. This is my purpose. This is my calling. In my opinion, we have to help people,” she conveys with passion. “If I can influence one young woman —what a blessing! That is not just that one woman. It’s the next generation and the next that benefits from that one young lady being better off.”

HER NAME AND HER CALLING

Originally from Alabama, Dr. Yapa grew up with no electricity or plumbing. Her parents both worked as teachers, and collectively brought home about $35.00 a week. With no money to spare for immunizations, Dr. Yapa was very sick as a child contracting mumps, measles, and chicken pox.

“I had every childhood disease, but it was God’s will that I survived and I am determined to complete His plan. I feel super-blessed to know that this is my purpose in life.” With misty eyes, Dr. Bonita Renee Yapa reveals her revelation; “This is how I know that what I am doing in Flint is my calling: Bonita in Spanish means beautiful. Renee in French means renewed. Together they mean Beauty Renewed. Ultimately, what I want to do is to take young women who feel they are not beautiful or worthy and create women who are beautiful because they are confident and have great self-esteem; this is the Bonita Renee Foundation. This occurred to me last year and feels like divine order.” Speaking about the young mothers in Flint who have touched her heart, “I love them. I want to reach them and inspire them in a way that few others ever have. I let them know that they are beautiful. I let them know that they are talented, that they are smart and capable.” This is her heart song. The last time she came back from Flint she was euphoric. Her time with the young mothers was so filled with divinity and love. It is only a matter of time before the Bonita Renee Foundation is established and the spark ignites the world for many more young single mothers. Just Girls J

BOUTIQUE

by Mary Meldrum

ill Oleski, a hard woman to keep up with, is the owner of Just Girls Boutique, on Orchard Lake Rd between 14 and 15 Mile Rd., on the Boardwalk shopping plaza. She and her daughter, Katie Oleski, have a lively work schedule that, along with managing the boutique, involves a lot of travel. It might not seem like

traveling is something the owner of a typical clothing store would spend a lot of time doing, but I assure you that Just Girls Boutique is not at all typical. The story of Jill’s professional and personal success in the fashion industry begins with a story of how she first pursued a calling to help others.

Prior to opening the store, Jill was working at Henry Ford Hospital as a physician’s assistant coordinator for heart and liver transplants. Although Jill loved providing care for critically ill patients, she found that her true passion for clothing was left unfulfilled. “I have always had a passion for clothes and have been kind of a clothes horse,” confesses Jill. Jill lived in Europe for a while where she developed an appreciation for European fashions. When she returned to the U.S., she found it difficult to find that particular look. Several years ago, Jill’s friend’s daughter was diagnosed with brain cancer. During her treatment she underwent several surgeries and is now a proud survivor. At the end of her recovery, she became involved with the Make-a-Wish Foundation, a charitable organization that gives young cancer patients and others who are terminally ill an opportunity to have a wish granted. Jill decided to throw a fashion show to raise money for the Make-a-Wish Foundation. Up until this point Jill had never put on a fashion show, her career in fashion had only included selling jewelry and accessories. This event forced her to become more involved with clothing and to transform into a clothing retailer. Working with charitable organizations deeply resonated with her and provided a positive motivation to continue to expand her business into what it is today. Jill continues to do fashion shows in order to give a portion of sales back to several different charities that benefit those less fortunate.

Owner Jill Oleski and daughter Katie Oleski

“That’s how it started, we just began traveling, doing fashion shows, and giving back to charity after charity with these shows,” she shares.

Now Jill has proudly given back to over an estimated 150 charities. By word of mouth, people from all over have asked her to participate in their boutique fashion shows to support various charities. Jill participates in shows across the nation including, Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin, Illinois, Florida and Pennsylvania. Many country clubs and Jewish temples in the area host the venues for many of these shows. “These organizations usually have a ladies’ luncheon and combine it with our boutique shows,” explains Jill. “Or they will have a wine and cheese night at hotels or country clubs.” Some of these events have a fashion show and also host other vendors, home businesses, and other local shops or boutiques. “We come in with racks and racks of clothes, and the ladies that attend the event will shop our unique selections. Then, at the end of the evening, a percentage of our sales go back to the selected charity,” Jill says. Although Jill has been in business for over ten years, Just Girls Boutique just became a brick and mortar store two years ago. In addition to the boutique’s retail hours, the store will often host special charitable events. Recently, representatives for Sympli, a brand out of British Columbia, came into the store to display their new fall line. Sympli encompasses much of the store’s inventory and is a great collection of over 300 mix – and match styles.

“People come in from all over for the Sympli line, and we give a percentage back to the community for that,” says Jill.

show last month at the Shenandoah Country Club called Pretty in Pink for breast cancer in which all the models were survivors.

The store carries sizes ranging from extra small to 3X in a wide variety of styles that can fit all ages. Jill’s daughter Katie typically buys for the young contemporary customers while Jill focuses her buying for women 40s and up.

“We use real people in our fashion shows. We don’t use traditional models. These are real woman and we dress them,” says Jill.

“I’m doing something that I love,” expresses Jill. The boutique’s inventory has evolved to include plus sizes, in comparison to other boutiques that only carry up to a size 10. Jill understands the frustration and disappointment of woman with non-traditional body types seeking flattering yet stylish clothes. “Now we have something for everyone. Larger ladies come in and actually start crying,” shares Jill. “They say, ‘I can’t believe I found comfortable clothes that fit so well, and I look so good!’” Last month they attended a Child’s Hope and Dream event at the Henry Hotel for under privileged children in Detroit. In addition, they participated in a huge fashion

On November 18th Just Girls will partake in the Strolling with the Sisterhood fashion show, where 20% of the sales are given back to the Temple Israel sisterhood. By continuing her involvement in fashion shows for charity, Jill is certainly listening to her heart. “It would be easier to sit in my store and wait for customers to come to me because schlepping all the racks and clothes is such hard work,” she laughs. “But things happen for a reason and I wouldn’t want it any other way.” In the case of Jill and Katie Oleski and Just Girls Boutique, those are some pretty great reasons.

Beautiful You

I

Before

was in a real rut with my hair. I couldn’t stand the color, and it had no style whatsoever. This makeover was exactly what I needed. I didn’t know what to expect when I showed up, but I was in good hands, from color to cut to makeup! It was so much fun to be pampered so nicely. I’m really happy with my new look. It’s so much more stylish, and really easy to style. Thanks, Maria! ~ Suzanne Gornowicz

SUZANNE GORNOWICZ Photography by Steve Ragland Assistant Photographer Maurice Sanders 32 | Eydís Magazine

Makeover BY YIANNIS

I had never met Suzanne before until I did her makeup. She is an accountant with a very busy schedule and expressed that she enjoyed wearing makeup. Hearing that, I was excited to apply vibrant colors to her eyes. I used earth tones, a black liner and lashes to make her pretty brown eyes stand out. Her skin tone was neutral, so I applied a natural beige foundation. I contoured her cheeks and used a little bronzer all over her face, adding coral blush on her cheekbones. Her lips were kept soft, but I used a brighter gloss to make them pop! ~ Makeup by Mona Rickart, 248.798.9888

Suzanne’s hair color was a light brown with a red tint, and the color was washed out. She has fine hair and had been wearing it long, below her shoulders. I changed her hair color to a rich mahogany and violet brown. I decided not to do highlights because they can make the hair look thinner and I wanted to create a thicker appearance for her. I cut Suzanne’s hair and while I left it long, the cut created needed body. I also changed her part to the opposite side. I blew out her hair and it looked very smooth and shiny. She can mix up the style by putting one side behind her ear or flipping her hair at the bottom. Her long bang sweeps across her forehead now and covers a bit of one eye, giving Suzanne a sexy appearance. She loved the transformation! ~ Hair by Yiannis Karimalis 248.931.8722, www.yiannishair.com

Sundance has just remodeled and expanded their floor space and now occupies a full 3,500 glorious square feet, full of shoes. Be still my heart! “Our store is beautiful. We take a lot of pride in our store and our presentation,” shares Katie. Colors include dark wood tones with pops of color throughout the store. There is a bounty of light pouring in lots of windows, which bounces off of beautiful glass and mirrors. And of course there are oodles of shoes and boots basking in all that dazzling light and divine color! Welcome to shoe Shangri-la, ladies! “We cater to women of all ages from size 5 to size 11,” explains Katie. “Honestly, we outfit every age group of women.” Since I have confessed to Katie that I am an incurable shoe addict with a particular weakness for boots, naturally, I have to know what brands they carry.

COMFORT, STYLE, & SHOE PARTIES!

What’s Not To Love!

by Mary Meldrum

R

obert Wolk, owner of Sundance Shoes, has been in business for over forty years. His daughter, Katie Johnston, started helping out at her father’s store when she was a little girl. Now all grown up and graduated from college, Katie has been working full-time with her father at Sundance Shoes for the last eight years.

34 | Eydís Magazine

This family owned business on Orchard Lake Road in West Bloomfield carries women’s shoes, handbags, gloves, scarves, and beautiful jewelry. Oh, and the shoes! “We carry some great accessories,” explains Katie, “but we are mainly a women’s shoe store.” Yes, yes you are!

She tells me they carry a lot of highfashion trendy sneakers right now. These are not your Nike and Adidas workout shoes. These are cool, comfortable, everyday brands that work well with skinny jeans. Some brands include Converse, Ash, Kenneth Cole, Steve Madden and J/Slides. “We do have an after-five selection,” describes Katie, “but people are really just wearing that black satin or black suede pump for cocktail and black tie events. We have shoes for prom and homecoming, but what everyone seems to want these days for dressy events are just a couple pair of nice shoes that work for everything.” As far as boots go, they carry everything including Ugg, sorel, Frye and Pajar. I have fallen for some Minnetonka fringe boots; hands off, they are mine.

Other popular brands of shoes that are flying off the shelves include Fly London, Eileen Fisher, Donald J Pliner, Converse, Jeffrey Campbell, Taos and more. Sundance Shoes has been very successful at stocking those top brands that everyone wants. Sundance Shoes is well known for hosting parties, events, and promotions at the store. They have trunk shows and after-hours parties for girls-night-out events and school groups. Recently, they had a highpowered group of women from GM who did a speaking event and then did some high-powered shoe shopping. “When people call us to sponsor an event for them, if we can fit it in and it works for them, we always try to accommodate the customers,” says Katie. “These parties are so much fun.”

“We carry the most amazing shoes because we have excellent relationships with our shoe representatives,” explains Katie. “There are certain brands that have exclusive territories.” It is no wonder loyal customers return to their trusted Sundance Shoe store every season, year after year. That limited availability of certain brands has made Sundance Shoes a magnet for women looking for that edited inventory that only certain stores have. “We try to carry brands like Eileen Fisher and Fly London that nobody else carries in our area. These reps have known my dad for 40 years, and he gets an amazing selection

because of that. We might be the only store in a 30-mile radius that carries a certain brand.” There are shoe stores that compete with Sundance Shoes, but it is obvious to this shoe-obsessed shopper why someone might pass them all by and set their sights on Sundance Shoes. After one peek, I bookmarked, made them a favorite, and “liked” their Facebook page. I know that I will be visiting Sundance again!

I asked Katie what has been her and her dad’s secret to success over the years. She explained that besides the beautiful environment and the abundant selection, it’s the service that keeps the customers coming back. “I believe that my dad has been in business for over forty years because of the great service that we provide. We have a great staff that knows their product, and we really know how to fit and style women. We know how to fit someone so they are comfortable and fashionable.” Katie and her father are very hands on and present in the store almost every day. They take pride in who they train and hire. Their manager, Robin, has been with Sundance for around 15 years or more.

Now Is the Perfect Time to Start Doing Yoga by Lila Lazarus My friend Jan, from England, told me once, in her fabulous British accent, “I can’t do yoga. I’m not bendy enough.” I immediately shot back:, “You’re not bendy enough because you don’t do yoga!” Anyone can do yoga. And, if you want to live to a ripe old age without feeling like the tin man in need of oil, yoga is a necessity. The ancient practice will give you a more positive outlook, stronger muscles and an increased level of stamina and endurance - traits that will take you into old age. Ask any regular practitioner of yoga and they’ll tell you they feel more focused, more peaceful, and are less likely to lash out when they do yoga on a regular basis. Taking a yoga class is like pushing the pause button on the stress in your life. Yes, you’ll get more bendy and your muscles get stronger, but there’s so much more than that.

BREATH DEEPER

In yoga you’ll take longer, deeper breaths and open your lungs. This improves your lung function and increases the oxygen in your body, helping you to relax.

BEAT THE WINTER BLUES

Yoga has been shown to relieve symptoms of mild depression. The practice forces you to focus on the moment; the breath washes away stress and improves your mental state.

GET BETTER Z’S

You’ll sleep better. Just getting on your yoga mat and doing some deep breathing can help lower your stress levels, sooth your mind, and release tension in your body. Taking a yoga class to improve sleep sure beats taking a sleeping pill!

IMPROVE BALANCE

Yoga helps you practice balance. It’s something we all need to practice every day. And as my wise Grandmother used to say

36 | Eydís Magazine

about balance, in her German accent, “If you don’t use it, you lose it.” Practicing balance now will no doubt help you later. Even if you don’t go to a yoga class, try brushing your teeth on one leg. Don’t get tense. Don’t force it. Keep breathing even when things become unsteady and feel out of balance. It’s something to think about both on and off the yoga mat.

STAND TALLER

If you spend 40 hours a week sitting in an office chair, then yoga for you is mandatory. Your muscles are begging to be stretched. Your joints are desperate for the tin man’s oil. Yoga improves your body’s alignment, helping you with posture, while relieving back, neck, joint, and muscle problems.

IMPROVE YOUR SEX LIFE

Need I say more? Your circulation improves. Well-stretched muscles serve you not only in the bedroom, but in any sport you choose.

CONNECT

Despite all our technology, it’s easy to feel disconnected and alienated. The word ‘yoga’ actually means connection or union. Carving out time for yoga is carving out time to put away the cares of the world and your cell phone; connect to your body and check in with yourself. The better we connect with ourselves, the better we connect with others. Whether you choose a power yoga class or a slow flow, you can get a great workout at your own speed and comfort level. Plus it’s a chance to unplug, turn off, and tune in to what’s really going on in your body and your soul. Go ahead—get bendy. The Challenges of

DIABETES in Women

by Mary Meldrum

T

he endocrine system is a network of ductless glands that secrete hormones directly into the bloodstream that is responsible for regulation of our bodily functions. Endocrine glands include the pancreas, pituitary, hypothalamus, thyroid, parathyroid, thymus, testes, and ovaries. Most people correlate hormones with sexual drive or behavior, but hormones are neurotransmitters that—like little buses on bus routes—carry chemical information, signals, and commands to every cell in our body to tell it what to do. It is a grand orchestration of information, and any breakdown in frequency or coordination of the communication between endocrine glands and cells can create problems for an individual’s overall health and well-being. Disruption of the balance in the endocrine system can create problems with reproduction, metabolism, sleep patterns, growth, energy levels, weight, circulation, and one’s ability to

38 | Eydís Magazine

manage stress. The list of disease processes that result from endocrine imbalances is a long one. One of the best known and most prevalent diseases of the endocrine system is diabetes. The gland that is impacted is the pancreas and the hormone that is affected is insulin. Insulin transports glucose—the body’s source of energy— to the cells and is the key chemical message that instructs the cell to open and receive the glucose. If your pancreas produces little or no insulin, your blood sugar level can climb to unhealthy, even dangerous, levels. For women, who typically have many hormonal fluctuations to deal with in their lives, diabetes can sometimes present further difficulties or health complications. Timothy W. Bodnar, M.D., an endocrinologist for St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor, was kind enough to take the time to answer some of questions regarding diabetes, especially where it concerns women.

Q: Dr. Bodnar, are there any complications when using birth control pills if a woman has diabetes? Dr. Bodnar: “There is nothing specific to diabetes that should preclude a woman from taking oral contraceptive pills (or using any other physician-directed form of contraception). There are reasons why a physician might recommend against use of oral contraceptive pills, such as a history of blood clots or severe migraines, but diabetes is not one of those. Q: What is the best way for a person with type 2 diabetes to lose weight? Dr. Bodnar: “There is no one-size-fits-all approach to weight loss for those patients who have type 2 diabetes. The approach probably needs to be multi-factorial and tailored to the specific patient. Weight loss efforts should focus around reduction in overall caloric intake, healthy sources of calories, and dedicated exercise and physical activity. I frequently recommend that my patients meet with a Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) to receive appropriate nutrition and diabetes counseling in the context of his/her specific health circumstances. Additionally, we now have many medication options for type 2 diabetes that help promote weight loss (or at least avoid the weight gain associated with some diabetes medications). Patients with type 2 diabetes should be sure to talk with their physicians about the effect of all their medications on weight.” Q: How does menopause affect diabetes? Dr. Bodnar: “Some of the changes women experience in menopause can make diabetes care more challenging. The drop in hormones such as estrogen and progesterone can sometimes lead to more blood sugar variability. Weight gain and increased frequency of urinary tract infections can complicate diabetes care. Sleep disruption in menopause can also lead to higher blood sugars.”

be very helpful. Some women with gestational diabetes remain diabetic after pregnancy. Most do not, but they remain at a very high risk of developing type 2 diabetes in the subsequent years. This makes continued monitoring by physicians and efforts at risk reduction (such as weight loss) critical, even if blood sugars normalize after pregnancy.” According to Dr. Bodnar, one of the key components to successful outcomes throughout changing hormonal levels for women seems to be vigilant oversight and monitoring. For women who have diabetes or are at a high risk of contracting it, just the knowledge that menopause, gestational diabetes, and certain medications might impact blood sugar levels can go a long way in helping them to take preventive steps to avoid any complications. Q: If a person is diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, do they need to see an endocrinologist or is there another specialty that can oversee diabetic health? Dr. Bodnar: “There are tens of millions of patients with type 2 diabetes in the US. Even if every endocrinologist in the US saw only patients with type 2 diabetes, there would not be enough endocrinologists to provide the necessary care. Therefore, primary care providers (Internal Medicine, Family Medicine) are critical in treating type 2 diabetes and provide much of the care, especially early in the disease process. A referral to an endocrinologist should be considered for difficulty in ascertaining the diagnosis, when the primary care provider does not have the necessary experience with the medications required by a patient, and/or when blood sugar control is not at goal despite best efforts of the patient and primary care provider.”

Q: If a woman is diagnosed with gestational diabetes, do they need to take insulin shots, and how long will the diabetes remain after the pregnancy? Dr. Bodnar: “Most women with gestational diabetes do not need to be on insulin injections. Healthy diet and exercise, and perhaps oral medications, can often suffice. Women with gestational diabetes should have this condition managed either by the obstetrician or an endocrinologist, and a consultation with a Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) can, again,

Opening Up Your Whys by John J. Schalter

He who has a why to live can bear almost any how. —Friedrich Nietzsche

Dear John, My goals seem lost and lifeless. What can I do to supercharge them? The spirit is willing, however, the flesh is weak. Janet K. Dear Janet, Thanks for the question and congratulations to you for your decision to create a better life. Goals are only as powerful as the energy behind them. Let me give you an example from my own life. When I was 11 years-old my father almost died from a massive heart attack and stroke. It left him totally disabled and confined to a wheelchair. His eyes could not correctly focus and his speech was completely slurred. Needless to say, I was devastated. I could not understand why God let this happened to such a kind and hard-working man.

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, The courage to change the things I can, And the wisdom to know the difference.[1] My family and I tried everything to help him get well; from medical treatment and therapy to meditation and health food. None of it worked. I remember the day when my mother shared the bad news. The doctors were convinced that he would never get better. He would spend the rest of his life (eleven years) in a wheel chair. I then had a revelation. I finally opened my “whys.” You see, there are some things in life that cannot be changed. It is the truth behind the Serenity Prayer listed above. Although I could not heal my father, I could heal myself. I set lofty goals because it made my father feel better and flash his big, magical smile. I decided to take all of my pain and frustration, and blend it into a kind of rocket fuel. In the end,

40 | Eydís Magazine

I felt comfort in knowing that his suffering was not being wasted. I felt gratitude because I realized that he taught me much more than any healthy father could. It energized me and inspired me and picked me up when I failed. Whatever trauma I was going through was nothing compared to what my father experienced. When I felt lazy, I thought about his courage and love and it inspired me into action. This way of thinking was certainly nothing new. Just think of the powerful “whys” our brave soldiers use to motivate them during a war. They are not risking life and limb for themselves. They are doing it to protect their families and the freedom of our great country. Their “whys” became more potent than the weapons they carry. We all have our own compelling “whys” on our journey through life. Parents work hard to send their kids to college to create a satisfying career. Policemen are motivated to keep our city safe and its citizens protected. Great “whys” are bigger than our own personal dreams. They almost always involve someone else. However, it is up to us to find them and place them firmly in our hearts and minds. Ask yourself, “Where and what are my own whys?” How can I put them to work for a better world and a better life? Try this and I guarantee you will never be the same. In the meantime, always remember that we are all too blessed to be stressed. Peace and Blessings,

John

WHEN YOU’RE AWAY, WHERE WILL YOUR PET STAY? by Mike Palmer The holidays are upon us. If your plans involve travelling this season, it’s important to keep the family pet in mind. There are plenty of options available, so plan ahead. That way, you can enjoy your holidays without the stress and worry of what’s going on back home. If the family pet is small—like a hamster, bunny, or fish—it may be a good idea to find a child in the neighborhood looking to make a few bucks. This way, they can also take the pet to their house and you don’t have to worry about people going in and out of your house while you’re gone. If your pet is a dog or cat that is easily stressed, it may be best to hire an in-home caretaker. If hiring someone for the first time, it’s important to ask them a lot of questions, and also make sure the person is bonded and insured. Don’t be afraid to ask for references. Some pet sitters charge per visit and some charge per day. If your dog is sick or elderly, you may want someone to stay in your home while you’re away, as opposed to someone just stopping by. If administering medication is a concern, you might want to find a pet sitter that is also a vet tech or has worked for a veterinarian. Taking vacations and travelling is healthy and can boost your morale. It should be the same for your pet. Think about how much fun your dog has socializing. Imagine your four-legged family member having that kind of fun the entire time you’re gone; that’s what you’ll get if you send your pup to a kennel or pet resort. Your pooch’s day will be filled with long walks, plenty of play time, bubble baths, nail trimming, comfortable bedding and gourmet meals. Many places now offer a webcam option, too, so you can check in on your pup whenever you choose. While fancy frills are always nice, it’s important your pet feel comfortable in the setting. Take a tour of the facility prior to your vacation. Be sure the establishment is clean and smells good. It should also be full of pets, as well as enough people to care for them. You also may want to try out their daycare before you leave your pet. That way, you can get a feel for the faculty and the facility before committing to overnight stays. The best way to judge is to note how your pup reacts after a day there. Upon your return, your pup should be excited. If he/she is not, this could be a testament to how their experience was. Chances are, you know your pet better than anyone, so you’ll know if his/her experience was a good one. If you choose this route, make sure your pup is up-to-date on all shots and vaccinations weeks before your vacation. One final piece of advice is to make sure you do your homework. Don’t hesitate to do background checks and research on businesses to make sure you’re leaving your furry friend in the right hands. Also, utilize the expertise of your local pet store owner. After all, if you entrust them to fulfill your pets daily needs, you should have faith in their recommendations for pet care.

Here is a great example of the kind of experience you receive when shopping at Sally’s Design Boutique. “I was nearby and I had to stop to see what you had today,” states a woman as she walks in, clearly a regular customer. “People are always asking me where I get my clothes.” Sally smiles and says softly, “This is something I hear quite often.” To see Sally and her staff in action is unbelievable. Pat, a customer of Sally’s, came in looking for a new outfit for a

special event she was attending. Three staff members swirled around her, going back and forth pulling clothing that would compliment and complete the look that Pat was looking for. The staff went through clothing by designer Blair Stanley, whose trunk show was hosted by Sally’s, Nov. 12th thru the 14th. It was clear how excited everyone was as they pulled the pieces together. “This is why customers come back time and time again,” states Sally, “not only are we the experts in clothing but we also find the perfect accessories that fit the outfit; it’s a complete look.” The personal one-on-one service that Pat was given was one that would have made you think she was a local celebrity. Sally’s also carries unique and stunning jewelry, belts, scarves, and handbags that are displayed to help make outfits unforgettable. She also showcases handmade jewelry by local artists Eric Beamon and Nancy Gad-Harf. Sally and her wonderful staff treat their customers with the respect they deserve, and know most, on a first name basis. Sally’s policy is and has always been, “make a customer, not a sale.” It is because of that motto that they have so many wonderful and loyal

Sally Horvitz customers today. There is no doubt that when Sally’s customers have a special event and come to her, Sally becomes their personal shopper. She does her very best to find the perfect look just for them. Clothing at its best at Sally’s—fashion for the future.

My Relationship With Food by Laura Solomon

B

y the time this article appears in Eydis, it will have been a year since I discovered why I overate and found my “weigh” back to myself. When I was 12 years-old, five-feet tall, and 100 pounds, my pediatrician (who was very portly) told my mother that I was ‘obese.’ Those words had great impact; the next forty years were very difficult. I was raped, married, divorced, abused, cheated on, and my mother killed herself. Food replaced my mother’s love and soothed my sorrow. I used excessive food when I was lonely, sad, afraid and depressed. Since I had very little impulse control, I also overate when I was happy. Food was my center and there was comfort in each bite. Over the years, I had learned of every diet plan out there. I was focused on how terrible I looked 24/7, 365 days a year. More than anything else, I was tired of hearing myself complain. A year ago, I decided that I was no longer going to carry the shame of being called obese, and searched for a way to stop owning that title. I found a therapist who specialized in relationships with food and began there. In that counseling, Vida Weinstein helped me to realize my worth and the reasons why I overate. I began to learn to care for myself as I care for others. She taught me the type of foods that are nourishing and I learned portion control. I was also taught to be loving to myself and that includes every bite I take. It also includes having the knowledge of self-acceptance and that everything isn’t always picture-perfect. It can’t be. I lead a complicated, busy life. But I don’t have to overeat over it. It turns out that the scale is a thermometer of what’s going on inside me, not a critical judge of a number—big or small. 44 | Eydís Magazine

The therapist helped me to untangle my emotions around food. She helped me to understand myself and how I was damaging myself with food, rewarding myself with food, and smothering myself in salty, sugary goo to try to alleviate my emotional and physical pain. It was complicated; I used food to soothe myself but that created more of a problem. It was a vicious circle. I realized that I used food to get shelter from life’s pain. In return I was creating more pain. Taking the time to learn about myself was the first step to change. I’ve learned different strategies to manage my emotions. It’s different and it’s hard, but I CAN do it without chocolate. I am not saying I don’t eat, but I am saying I am finally appropriate in what I eat. I am eating because I am physically hungry and I have learned to know when I am full. I am more vulnerable now because I am not “doped up” on sugar and excessive amounts of food. My emotions are far rawer, but so are the foods I am eating. This journey (and I hate the word journey) has taught me that I am more than a number on a scale and that my value is not weighed in pounds. Yes, I have lost a considerable amount of weight, but the greatest thing I’ve lost is my sense of self-doubt. I’ve lost the feeling that I’m not good enough, or pretty enough, or perfect enough. I have come to the conclusion that I am just fine. I feel so free and I hope the same for you. Laura Solomon lives in West Bloomfield, Michigan, with her husband and their nine children. She is the author of “Normal Life”, available on Amazon. Read her blog at thereview52.blogspot.com.

100 Years of Quality

BRICKER TUNIS FURS

by Mary Meldrum

T

he history of the fur business in Detroit is a grand story of an industry that has had a remarkable evolution and a rich history that is incomplete without the remarkable story of Arthur Bricker and his family. Celebrating their 100th anniversary, the chronicles of Bricker Tunis Furs began in Russia in 1916, when a 27-year-old Jacob (Jack) Bricker traveled an incredible 2,000 miles by foot to board a steamer to New York City with little more than $40 in his

46 | Eydís Magazine

pocket. Jack Bricker made his way to Detroit, settled here, competed with many other fur traders from Detroit to New York along the Canadian border, and built a distinguished fur business and reputation as a high-quality furrier. Jack Bricker’s first store was located in Downtown Detroit on Farmer Street near Grand River Ave. Bricker eventually opened his second store on the Avenue of Fashion at Livernois and 7 Mile in Detroit. In all, the Bricker family enjoyed 45 years in the heart of Detroit. Jack’s son, Arthur Bricker, is

now the owner proprietor of Bricker Tunis Furs located on Orchard Lake Road in West Bloomfield and has been there for the last 44 years. Arthur recalls that, when he was 18 years old, there were 180 furriers in and around the city of Detroit. He remembers his father walking down to the busy Detroit riverfront to buy fur pelts from Native American, American, Canadian, and French trappers. They brought their fresh pelts down from northern Michigan and Canada. These trappers would make landing at what

is now known as Trapper’s Alley next to the Detroit River. There, trappers would hustle, sell, and trade their skins to the furriers. From this humble beginning, Bricker Tunis Furs has grown over the last 100 years to become one of America’s premier furriers. The flight of Jack Bricker from Russia, and his interesting and difficult life in America as a young immigrant, began a heritage that has stood the test of time over the last century. Having learned the fur business from the ground up from his father, Arthur’s skills and his global knowledge of the fur industry clearly reflects his lifelong commitment and love for this craft. Bricker Tunis Fur’s unwavering commitment to quality products is the reason this furrier has stood the test of time.

GIVING BACK

Arthur Bricker has committed certain profits from his business to the Ronald McDonald House organization for sick children. His daughter was born with a rare disease that had the family frequently traveling to hospitals from Toronto to New York over the course of several years. “It’s a good cause for children. We do the Snazzy and Jazzy Holiday Tea luncheon at the Townsend Hotel in December,” shares Arthur. This year, the Holiday Tea will be Saturday, December 5th from 12pm to 2pm. There is an auction and Bricker Tunis Furs also sponsors a fashion show at this annual event. It turns out that Bricker Tunis Furs provided the fur coats for the ABC television show Dynasty. Eight of these famous fur coats will be auctioned off. “You can own a coat that the character, Alexis Carrington or actress, Linda Evans wore,” smiles Arthur. A

percentage of the money raised will be donated to the Ronald McDonald House, of course.

“That was a very memorable time for me,” conveys Arthur. “The Temptations, the Spinners, the Four Tops—every one of them I remember and enjoyed making coats for them.”

Bricker Tunis Furs gives to the Ronald McDonald House in other ways too. “We also sell stuffed teddy bears, dressed in Tee-Shirts bearing ‘The Ronald McDonald House’ logo to our customers,” explains Arthur.

ARTISTRY

MOTOWN NIGHT

In 1967, Arthur Bricker began making custom furs for famous Motown stars like Diana Ross, Tammi Terrell, Martha Reeves, and all the young up-andcoming stars. Although many of these young stars could not afford fur coats, he provided furs for them to wear to the Grammy Awards and all the big events. Bricker was generous, allowing singers, athletes, and television stars to borrow and wear his coats around the world. Whenever they had the ability to pay Arthur, they would give him some money for the fur, but he did not ask. Many of these Motown legends have never forgotten his generosity, and are good friends with Arthur today.

Bricker Tunis Furs still practice the time-honored artistry of expertly hand-sewing furs of original design. Arthur Bricker is adamant that the fit and proportion be exquisitely tailored for each customer. This has been their formula for success. There is an unmistakable timeless grandeur in the Bricker Tunis style. “We are a custom furrier. We still fit furs to the individual like we did 100 years ago,” relates Arthur. “We only choose, stock, and create quality. I really love what I do. My customers want European fashion, high quality, great fit, and good service.”

Arthur Bricker also provided furs for the TV hit Dynasty, for Ebony magazine, and for many of the top boxers like Tommy “the Hit Man” Hearns. People came to Bricker Tunis Furs because of the quality, the fashion, and their consistent ability to make beautiful things that make people look their best. After all these years, Motown decided to pay tribute to Arthur. They organized an invitation-only event and to honor Arthur and recognize his professional excellence and commitment to the music industry and to Detroit. There was music, exquisite hors d oeuvres, and some of the surviving Motown stars thanked Arthur for his support and devotion to their careers.

FORGIVENESS Isn’t there someone here, living, right now in your life that you need to reach out to, and connect with, or even forgive? —John Holland, medium

by Judith E. Lipson, M.A., LPC

P

hysician Dr. Ira Byock says, “Many people confuse forgiveness with exoneration. Forgiveness does not excuse someone from doing something wrong. Instead, forgiveness accepts the past as it was, embraces the present, and faces the future. Forgiveness is a strategy for you to become free of emotional baggage.” Forgiveness is acceptance. A realization that what you wish was different in your past will never be. When you free yourself from the wishes of what wasn’t (and therefore can’t be), you open yourself to a peace-filled present and

to all the possibilities of your future. Forgiveness is empowerment. It means that you stop seeing yourself as the victim and take your power back.

2015 article in Eydis, “Emotion: Anger is Not a Primary One” to deal with any anger from this situation. Next, shift the situation energetically:

John Holland continues, “Forgiveness doesn’t necessarily mean releasing the person from responsibility of their past actions. It’s a matter of releasing the anguish that your soul is carrying around with it. Whether they deserve to be forgiven or not, just remember that you’re doing it for yourself.”

Relax into a quiet meditative space and look at the beautiful being that you are without fear and resentment. “I fill myself with light. May I remember again that sense of perfect safety that I have known. May I feel again the love and security that is mine. May I regain, with peace and love, the knowing that my highest wisdom understands about this situation or individual. I ask that I continue to connect with my highest self

When you feel this is complete, take a purposeful breath and bring your awareness back to your body. See yourself in this room in the clothes that you chose to wear today. Let your breath bring awareness to your body, wiggle your fingers and toes, and open your eyes.

acceptance (and therefore forgiveness) of ALL of your aspects. Author Lewis B. Smedes said: “To forgive is to set a prisoner free and discover that the prisoner was you.” So I recommend that you repeat the exercise above to shift and release any ways that you are imprisoning yourself. In light of the rampant fear and hate in our society, I offer this more global technique for forgiveness as well:

and my guides so that I may continue to experience the world with love, security, and peace. I release all ways that this old situation defined me, and I move into my future in peace.”

Breathe gently and fully into your heart, and feel it expand. Envelop your loved ones with peace and good will. Now expand those feelings, and your heart energy, to reach out to your community, filling and surrounding it with love and good will. Expand it outwards with the intention of including groups that had been formerly described as different—be it race, gender, ethnicity, religion, etc. Connect now with the individuals that create these groups and see them as individuals. way for people to receive their manicure and pedicure while contributing to worthy causes and giving back to the community. “We just finished working with Bark Nation, which is an animal rescue that works on rehabilitating and re-homing abused animals,” shares Dr. Popofski. “We had a kick-off for them in October to raise money, and then sponsored and featured them in the spa for the entire month. We do other organizations throughout the year the same way.” Dr. Popofski’s podiatric offices and medical practice is also the only on-site joint commission accredited surgery center in southeast Michigan. That enables patients to undergo foot and ankle surgery right in Dr. Aimee Popofski’s office.

Services offered are designed to be extremely clean and safe, with a focus on preventing contamination. For any person who is concerned with the hygienic level of manicures and pedicures, Sole Serenity Spa removes those worrisome health variables and provides a sterile respite for clients. The combination of the Sole Serenity Spa with the on-site surgical center allows Dr. Popofski to offer a broad spectrum of medical specialty foot care.
