Welcome to Issue 19 of The BULLetin. Sometimes I think there are no words available to describe the present situation. Mainly because it keeps changing! But it’s been swings and roundabouts again since the summer issue, with tentative steps out followed by a hasty retreat. I am hopeful at the time of going to print that more copies of the magazines will be delivered through doors this time around... That said, I’m delighted with the level of support offered to Myriad Pro Publishing at this time. There are no less than six new advertisers in the Autumn BULLetin and there’s a special feature on p14 introducing some of these while outlining the benefits of using these community/ commercial publications to promote your business when the chips are down. I’m equally chuffed with the calibre of editorial contributions in the circumstances too. And we’ve a heap of your photos on p9. Thank you Nikki Peachey for the cover. Remember that community information is FREE to include in these pages, so if you have any news for the Winter eds, tell me about it by November 1st if you can. Best wishes to all affected by Covid, and thanks to everyone fighting it on the front lines. Keep hanging in there, folks!

Food Bank anticipates need will run through Xmas...
As the move into a new normal continues to flux, Alford Community Food Store want to remind you all that they are still available. Started as a temporary initiative, the resource has grown and changed and is expecting to remain open at least through the Christmas holidays, likely longer. The food store is part of the larger Alford Coronavirus Volunteer Support Network. Originally based in the Alford Golf Club, itt has since moved to a new undisclosed location. Around 15 volunteers help keep things running on a weekly basis. Volunteer Lyza Riddell told The BULLetin: “We’ve been incredibly lucky from the first day with a huge amount of community support – the golf club actually reached out to us to offer their space which made everything we were doing initially possible. “The Alford Co-op and K&A Anderson’s have served as drop-off locations for all of our food donations and when we started taking in library items the reverend at St. Andrews contacted us to offer their space to accept those donations daily. We’ve received both fixtures for our library and help with supplying pet food to families we support from DAWGS. And now we’re receiving great support from the Men’s Shed and Community Garden organizers with fresh food donations as they’re available. “Which isn’t to mention the incredibly generous number of donations we’ve received locally to help run our programs or the volunteers who have donated their time to actually pack and deliver parcels.” Find the group on Facebook or email alfordcovidvolunteernetwork@gmail.com

Buannaich Bookkeeping takes the wheel...
Alford bookkeeper Catherine Dow has expanded her porolio and created a free ebook, especially for Driving Instructors. The Expenses Bible has 24 pages of highly useful information, hints, tips, and advice on how to save money on your tax bill legally by claiming all the expenses you are entitled to. As a driving instructor, there are common expenses you will be entitled to claim, but tax can be specialised. If you would like advice that is specific to your situation, you can book a 15-minute call with Catherine where she will go through your situation and give you more advice than is available in the book. It can be downloaded from www. subscribepage.com/drivinginstructors and you can book a call with Cathering using this link: https://buannaich.simplybook.it/

Catherine offers three different levels of packages, with monthly prices starting from around the cost of one driving lesson. All packages include stationery, full bookkeeping, monthly reports, email support, and completion of a self-assessment tax return. Enhanced packages will include telephone support and a seven-day turnaround, ad hoc HMRC inquiries, and a six-month progress call. Catherine said: “These packages allow you to concentrate on what you are good at (teaching) while lessening your paperwork burden. They are compact so they are easy to keep in your office (car) and can easily be completed in the car between lessons, which leaves plenty of time to focus on earning money. With the monthly reports, you’ll be advised on potential taxes due so that you can budget throughout the year. “I’m looking forward to times ahead when I will have further businesses and industries that I will be adding. Look out for further information or contact me.” You can contact Catherine using the details on the left.

Adhering to Government guidelines on lockdown during the Coronavirus crisis, Donside Community Council has not held a meeting since February. However, that does not mean that nothing is being done and we are still there for anyone who needs help or advice. Contact us by email (above) or through our Facebook page. We are in danger of reaching information overload, with what seems like 24-hour rolling news either on TV and radio or through social media. As we try to keep in touch with our loved ones, work and learn from home the message remains to stay at home, stay safe and keep those you love safe too. There will be time needed for healing our lives and our community when it is safe to do so. DCC will be working to help the Donside area through this.

The BULLetin relies on advertising to pay for design and printing and it means a lot that so many regular customers have continued to advertise during the Covid calamity. I am just as delighted to welcome several new advertisers recently too, many of which feature on these pages here. At Myriad Pro Publishing, advertisers are not just a space on a page. All advertisers benefit from featuring in a Facebook album every quarter, and where advertisers’ own posts are seen on that social media plaorm, they will be shared. Feel free to tag The BULLetin to make sure. New customers can also benefit from introductory features, and there are perks to being a long-term advertiser too, as well as discounts for featuring in the Aboyne and Banchory publications. The business landscape and publicity methods are changing all the time, and especially at the moment! So if you have any ideas on how The BULLetin can further support you, do let me know. No matter if you are on the main street, out in the sticks, working from your spare room or just operating online, I can help. Have you started a new business in the Aboyne area? Want a mention? Get in touch.
When times are tough, don’t stop ADVERTISING!
The BULLetin represents a unique opportunity for you to promote your business to a targetted area at reasonable cost. Ad rates start at just ÂŁ27 for a quarter page Around 1,500 copies are distributed through the doors of residences in the village, prominent spots in the local community and within businesses willing to stock it. Geographically it covers Alford and the surrounding areas. All Myriad Pro Publications are also available to read online at issuu.com

Holly Wreaths Stock Carried & Specials Made to Order Aberdeenshire Voluntary Action launched their AVA Community Spirit Awards at the beginning of July to recognise Community Spirit in our villages and towns during the lockdown and were overwhelmed by the response. CEO Dan Shaw said: “People have been nominating in their hundreds, the people in their community who have gone out of their way to help, support and put a smile on people’s faces during the pandemic. “Many award recipients have been nominated multiple times showing the impact they have had on their community. Several of our nominations are very young showing a sense of community spirit from a young age”. There are over 200 recipients of the AVA Community Spirit Award and the full list can be found in AVA’s most recent newsletter, their website www.avashire. org.uk or on Facebook.

It’s All Go at the Heritage Museum! and you can help, writes volunteer Jackie Ross
We have not been able to open the Museum this season but the committee and volunteers have not been idle. You may have noticed an increase in our social media output, which included a popular A-Z of Museum Artefacts together with some quizzes, followed by our posts celebrating the Year of Sound. Look out for our Virtual Tour, Facebook Watch Party and other online events during the virtual Doors Open weekend on Sept 19/20. We have also been considering the longer term sustainability of the Museum. As part of this process we commissioned a structural survey of the building which identified some serious issues which need to be addressed soon if we are to safeguard this precious local resource. Our next steps are to carry out a feasibility study and create a business plan. But to do all of these we require more volunteers. We urgently need folk to help keep the museum functioning. Would you consider joining a Board of Trustees? Or helping with fundraising? Or volunteering for door duty or a ‘work party’ to tidy an area of the Museum? Or perhaps you would like to get involved in educational or community projects? The opportunities are endless. If you’d like to help ensure this wonderful attraction has a future then please contact us on info@alforheritagemuseum.com
Good news for all those who enjoy the annual Hamewith Concert at the Alford Heritage Museum – it will go ahead – although in a very different format. Obviously, it isn’t going to be possible to have a crowd of folks from Strathdon to Dunecht crammed into the old mart ring as we usually do, so we are planning an alternative Hamewith this year. Regulars to the concert will know that we enjoy two nights of Doric poetry, song, dance and music by youngsters from Donside schools. The concert was established to celebrate the life and work of local poet Charles Murray and has been a highlight in the museum’s calendar for generations. Since it won’t be possible to hold a live event this year, we have decided to organise a Hamewith Facebook Watch Party where we will share videos produced by local folk to celebrate our north-east heritage. The Watch Party will take place during the Across the Grain (Doric) Festival at the beginning of October. Full details will be published nearer the time on the Alford Heritage Museum Facebook Page and through Aberdeenshire’s Across the Grain Festival. We look forward to seeing your ‘comments’ during the party!

Congratulations to Bob Michie from Stonehaven who was the winner of our recent competition to win free entry to Alford Heritage Museum. Participants were invited to create a story, poem, cartoon or piece of nonfiction inspired by one of the rooms in the Museum. Here is Bob’s excellent poem, inspired by the ‘Royal Observer Corp’ room. We look forward to showing Bob and friends round the Museum when it reopens.

Alford Medical Practice Update To reduce transmission of coronavirus the vast majority of contact will be over the phone, by email or video rather than face to face for the foreseeable future. We are now triaging all appointments through eConsult, an easy to use online consultation tool which can be accessed through our website: www.alfordmedicalpractice.co.uk Please use the phone only if you do not have access to the internet or you need to urgently speak to one of our patient advisors: 01975 562253. All contacts and queries submitted via eConsult are triaged by the clinical team and the most appropriate course of action decided The clinical team will review your submission and get back to you, usually within two hours if your eConsult is submitted before 12 noon. Any online consultations submitted after 12 noon will be responded to as quickly as possible with a guaranteed response of 10am the following working day. While some of the lockdown restrictions have eased, it is important that the practice only deals with patients faceto-face when it is absolutely essential or urgent. We remain open and available for your health concerns but due to obvious restrictions will try to manage patients by telephone and video consultations (using NearMe) whenever possible. The system has worked very well ensuring patients are dealt with promptly and by the appropriate member of the team. This means that to continue to protect public safety total triage will remain in place long term as the practice deals with Covid and works towards finding a new normal.
The preferred route into the surgery would be by completing an eConsult but details can be taken over the phone for patients who cannot do this. Please don’t hesitate to contact us with any worrying or urgent concerns. eConsult has several functions: It can help you with self-diagnosis and determine the most appropriate place to go seek help, which may be your local pharmacy or the national 111 help line; and it provides a mechanism to submit a secure eConsult direct to the GP 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This means you don’t have to wait for the practice to open to submit an eConsult, it can be done anytime including evenings and weekends to beat the morning rush. Our telephone system has been upgraded and we now have a 24 hour repeat prescription messaging service. The number remains the same (019755 62262), however, you can order your prescriptions any time of day or night – even at the weekend. You can also order prescriptions online – see our website for an application form. You can now request test results via eConsult at any time or you can telephone between 2pm and 5pm, Monday to Friday. Unfortunately the NHS system continues to be under tremendous pressure and we appreciate your patience and understanding during this time.
