Welcome to Issue 23 of The BULLetin. Are we out of the woods yet? Let’s hope so, or at least nearly. The signs of recovery in Alford and the surrounding areas are good, as new and established groups and activities get going and more businesses open their doors. The best news from the summer has to be the reopening of Haughton Holiday Park after several years in the wilderness. You can read all about how our cover stars and new owners Shona and Ross are getting on, and their future plans, on p3. There’s a very exciting Artist in Residence Project starting very soon. While based over the hill a bit in nearby Aboyne, this free six-month initiative aims to include Donside in its catchment too. See p14 for details. Doric Books are going from strength to strength, there’s good news from the Christmas Festival, and Alford Heritage Museum has the results of its community survey they told you about in the previous issue. Remember that community information is FREE to include in these pages, so if you have any news for the Winter edition, tell me about it by November 1st if you can.

Do you have something to share? An upcoming event or achievement? Group or individual, let The BULLetin know what you are up to, using the contacts on p3 and 30.

Haughton Country Park Developments The new owners of Haughton Holiday Park spared a few minutes to tell us about their summer so far and future plans... “I am Shona Cooper and along with my son, Ross, we are the new proprietors of Haughton Holiday Park. We took over on July 2nd and along with many family and friends, we set about cutting the grass and clearing the site to get it ready to open two weeks later. There are about 25 loyal holiday home owners who have welcomed us and are helping us get to know the site. We have had many returning campers and caravaners who are delighted to see the site open again and have been very encouraging and positive about how the site is starting to blossom again. The locals are very supportive and it’s lovely to see the site being used by people and families walking through. Within Haughton House we are changing the reception to include a shop selling food, ice creams, camping equipment and local crafts and goods. We are refurbishing the flats which we hope to be letting out as holiday lets by October. The site will be open for 11 months of the year so we will be open for Christmas and New Year. Our future plans include a coffee shop opening in the spring and a new toilet block within the walled garden and long-term plans include pods and chalets.”

4

Meanwhile, the registered charity Friends of Haughton Park started work on a feasibility study for a bike pump track and all-ability trail in the park and hosted Community Consultation Presentation and Survey to garner local opinions. The aim is to provide facilities that are free to use, accessible and appealing to all, and sustainable in the long term. The Friends say the project should deliver multiple benefits for a large range of users, as well as fill a gap in provision within the local area.

Doric Books’ first book ‘Aul McDonald His a Fairm’ has been selling like hot cakes. If you haven’t got your copy yet you can order one from the website www.doricbooks.com or visit your local bookshop to ask for a copy. As a Community Interest Company, Doric Books is a not-for-profit business, established to promote the development of North-East Scots language through publishing books and providing workshops and events for schools, care homes and community groups. Their second book, The Puddock, an illustrated version of the popular poem by JM Caie about a big-headed frog – is ready to go to print. A Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign has been launched to raise the funds to help the puddock leap onto the shelves. Further information can be found on Doric Books website and Facebook page. Or go direct to https://www. kickstarter.com/profile/thepuddock “We’re fair trickit, really pleased with how things are going so far. Aul McDonald has had really positive feedback and we can’t wait to publish ‘The Puddock’. It’s a really popular poem loved by all ages and Aaron’s illustrations really bring it alive,” said Jackie Ross, co-director of Doric Books. As well as publishing, Doric Books also provide workshops and ‘Blethers’ in Doric for schools, care homes and community groups. Full details of what they can offer can be found on their website.

Alford Christmas Festival would like to thank everyone for their continued support. The group is hoping to have a Christmas parade with Lonach Pipe band, Cairngorm Reindeers and Santa to switch on our Christmas lights on Sunday 28th of November, all being well! Due to Covid 19 situation with planning and uncertainty we weren’t able to commit to our Christmas festival but we will be back next year. Look out for maybe a few pop-up Christmas events in the village in the leadup to our switch on. For more information, you can “like” the group’s Facebook page or email kerryjhenderson@hotmail.co.uk

Now in its 30th year of existence, Alford Heritage Museum has just completed a community survey to find out people’s opinions about the museum, its current offering, and some of its plans for the future. As a community museum and resource, we particularly wanted to hear what you thought, especially after a long period of closure. We were delighted with the feedback, as we received over 230 completed surveys, mostly online. What did you tell us ? The vast majority of people knew of the existence of the museum but over 50% had not visited in the last 3 years or, indeed, at all. Many people were new to the area and so had not yet had a chance to visit, whilst a lot of locals had just never got round to visiting. 175 people gave us their impressions of the museum. Those who had visited were very positive about the many and varied collections – “An interactive Aladdin’s cave”; “A total Pandora’s box”; “A treasure trove”; “Eclectic, but full of interesting things”. However, there were a few comments that the exterior of the building was in need of some TLC and that it was not clear what you would see inside, apart from farming memorabilia. The preferred name was the Alford Heritage Museum, with few voting for some of the newer, more modern suggested names. 71% said that they would like to attend events at the museum once these can start again, and there were 116 suggestions offered, the most popular being talks on local history; concerts or events with a traditional or Doric theme; and activities which showcased the museum collection. More events for kids were requested.

10

We were delighted that 94% of respondents supported our intention to apply to Aberdeenshire Council (the owners of the building) for a Community Asset Transfer. This is vital if we are to attract large scale grant funding to improve the building and its facilities. We had several offers of help via the survey responses and will be following these up over the next few weeks. If you would like to volunteer to help, but didn’t fill in the survey, please email us at volunteers@alfordheritagemuseum.com. The museum trustees will be reviewing the findings of the survey as part of their business plan for the next few years and will try to act upon the suggestions of the local community.

Donside Community Council Don’t you just love the flowers in the village? Donside Community Council were happy to help out and be a supporter of Alford Gardening Club who have brought a welcome splash of colour to Alford for locals and visitors to enjoy. There are so many positive things happening in our area with many exciting projects on the go. Donside Community Council has close ties and have supported the Friends of Haughton Park and the Alford Valley Community Railway and it is good to see them both taking another step forward with their plans. Donside Community Council has also been involved with the group set up to support businesses in Alford and throughout Donside. If you are interested in these projects or in working to make Donside even better and if you have some time and energy to spare, why not consider joining Donside Community Council? Community councils are voluntary organisations that act as a voice for their local area. They meet regularly to discuss issues affecting their area, including planning and licensing applications. Elections were held at the end of May this year but there are still quite a few vacancies in most areas. See our current list of councillors and vacancies in this edition of the BULLetin. Members can be co-opted between elections so if you are interested, get in touch with your local community councillor through our Facebook page or email us at chair@ donsidecommunitycouncil.org.uk. If you want to do some research around what is involved then have a look at the Community Council information pages on the Aberdeenshire Council website (https://www.aberdeenshire.gov.uk/ communities-and-events/communitycouncils/)

NEW! Aboyne Artist in Residence Deeside and Donside Communities

A new art-based project to assist community wellbeing post-lockdown has been launched in Aboyne. Based at the new Aboyne and Deeside Community Shed in Cemetery Road, Aboyne Artist in Residence Deeside and Donside Communities aims to provide a tranquil, welcoming, well resourced and free-to-use studio full of creative possibilities and classes for adults and children aged 8+. Headed by Aboyne artist Stephanie Vandem, the project will start on Thursday September 9th and run for six months, free of charge, for two afternoons a week. Steph said: “This is a very relaxed, welcoming and stress-free project. Creativity flows better without the pressures of ‘achievement’. The process of learning, exploring (and making many ‘mistakes’) is everything. Patience and practice inevitably leads us to advancement of skills and completion of artworks. There is no need to worry. I hope many of you will make use of this free service. It has taken a lot of work and many unpaid hours by many people to get this far.”

Winding Down for Autumn Wendy Simpson of Craigievar Gardeners offers seasonal tips to help you get the best from your patch, large or small... The late summer vibrancy of crocosmia, rudbeckia and dahlia displays prompts us to think about the impending autumn and how we can prepare our gardens for shorter days and a falling thermometer. It’s time to tidy herbaceous borders. Cut down perennials as they die back to remove rotting foliage. You can leave attractive seedheads in place as bird food or you can collect your own seed by putting stems upside down into paper bags so that the seeds collect in the bag. Similarly, clear your vegetable beds of all spent plants. Cut pea and bean plants off at ground level because their roots help to fix nitrogen in the soil, which will benefit next year’s crops. Compost all debris unless it is diseased. Clearing your beds and borders now gives you more space to apply a layer of mulch to replenish the nutrients in the soil and insulate roots. In early autumn, apply an autumn fertiliser to support your lawn through the winter. Autumn fertilisers have low nitrogen and high potassium content and are intended to support the grass’s resistance to frost rather than to encourage growth. It’s important not to use a highnitrogen (summer) fertiliser because this will encourage too much growth. Make sure you keep your lawn clear of fallen leaves because these will deprive it of light. Raise the height of your mower to allow the lawn to grow slightly longer because this enables the grass to make better use of decreasing hours of sunlight. Think about your spring and summer bulb displays and order your bulbs now with a view to planting in October.

Youth group expands remit

Community needs more post-Covid, says Joanne Bain We are in transition as a charity. We are now AYC (Alford Youth & Community), and not just the Alford Youth Cafe. We are still on the lookout for a new building for that venture, following the closure of TickTock. AYC is in the process of creating a website so it’s clearer for everyone what acitivies are available. At the moment, everything is being advertised on the Alford Youth Cafe page on Facebook. As we have come out of lockdown, we as a team have had the heartbeat of this village in our hearts. Already in a short space of time we have set up a toddler group which runs every Tuesday at Haughton Park 10-12 (T in the Park!). We are also looking to do monthly youth nights at Haughton Park with a fire pit, creating an outdoor space to hang out and chill together. Watch this space...

Alford Youth & Community is excited to bring you a monthly Men's Night, at 70 Main Street, Alford. Every fourth Friday of the month, the gents from Alford are welcome to come along to the home of the organisation’s trustees for a lads’ catch-up from 7-9pm. Joanne and Ricky Bain have a home that has room to offer pool/darts/putting mat and board games. There will be food/hot drinks, even Ricky’s bad taste in music. New Charitable Status: We are very pleased to announce that we have been awarded a new OSCR charitable status. We are now an Incorporated Charity. This is great news as it means that the Hall and its assets now belong to a Trust. More excitingly it also means that our faithful supporters in the community can join us as Members and can contribute to the decisions made about the Hall, should they wish to, without necessarily being a Trustee/Committee Member. We welcome applications to be a Member (no cost involved). Please contact the Secretary, Edna Harris for a membership form. Contact details below. to buy the necessary equipment to offer groups/ organisations / businesses the opportunity to hold blended meetings...a group of people meeting in the Hall with an additional number participating virtually via Zoom. Tully Bus: The grant will also enable us to offer transport to and from events at the Hall, if numbers allow. 50/50 Club: The 50/50 Club is growing but there is always room for more members. Draws are held monthly and there are 3 winners each month. In July the 1st prize was £88.75 and since the first draw in March a total of £837.50 has been won and Hall funds have increased by £837.50. (50/50...get it?). But you have to be in it to win it! Contact the Hall Secretary, Edna Harris for an application form.
