Evelyntreasurefinder2 in Main Street, Alford, opened in June 2021. It is owned and run by Sandy and Evelyn Mitchell who have an intensive knowledge of all things vintage and retro. Good value, quality, versalitity and personal service are the main qualities of the business. Evelyn searches the UK, Australia and The Middle East for treasures to sell in Alford. Its four rooms house a reception with stunning jewellery and gifts; the Retro room displays memory-evoking china, glass, pottery and kitchenalia from past times; fashion items from several eras grace the third room; interior design, soft furnishings, linens and small furniture feature in room four, while artworks are displayed throughout. The wide, sunny pavement outside the front door is good for displaying the colourful, quirky items for sale which tempt passing customers. Facilities include cash or card payments, fashion changing room and gift wrapping. Best of all, a warm welcome awaits! Find us on Facebook and Instagram. Open Tuesday and Thursday to Saturday 10-4, Sundays 12-4.

Changing Times: This is quite an evenul time for Donside Community Council. The Aberdeenshire Council Elections in May saw two of our councillors step down: Cllr John Latham and Cllr Paul Gibb. We would like to take this opportunity to thank them for their service to our area. We also hope to have some new Community Councillors in place too before our AGM in June. Meengs: Donside Community Council has resumed ‘in person’ meetings at Alford Community Campus. Remember, our meetings are open to everyone. They take place monthly except for July and
December, on the second Tuesday of the month. Resilience Planning: After the chaos caused by storms Arwen, Malik and Corrie, a group of Community Councillors with other members of our communities throughout Donside have come together to form a Resilience Plan. The plan is still in the early stages but we would expect to be launching in the Autumn. Follow us on Facebook to keep up to date. If you have a question or want any information, contact us by email: chair@ donsidecommunitycouncil.org.uk

Alford Heritage Museum opened its doors on April 7 for its first full season since 2019. A successful outdoor market was held on the first Saturday of opening with around 400 people attending the market and museum. Building upon a busy but shortened opening in 2021, a full programme of visitor activities and events is planned for this year. This will include car boot sales, outdoor markets, childrens’ craft and story sessions and some special fundraising events looking at the museum collections. The annual tractor run will also take place – date and venue to be confirmed at a later date. Heritage Association Chair Thomas Jackson explained: “This year we plan to encourage more visitors to come to the museum by offering some different types of events and activities. Although we expect to attract a good number of tourists, our core audience has always been from Alford and the north east of Scotland. People are visiting more local attractions this year and supporting local events. We hope to give them a visit to remember.” Historic Environment Scotland recently awarded the museum building (the old Alford Auction Mart) A-grade Listed Building status, acknowledging its importance within Scotland’s architectural heritage. The events run by the museum will help to raise funds towards the conservation of the building and its unique collection.

Golf Club celebrates 40 years
(and 40 years of Frances, too!), writes Club Chairman Derek Ross
On the 15th of May 1982 the first tee shot was played at the then 9-hole golf course at Alford. This followed eight years of negotiation with various council departments and local landowners and intense fundraising by members to generate the necessary deposits. The clubhouse at the time was a second hand Terrapin building, which had previously been used at Aboyne Academy. In the intervening years, Alford Golf Club has built a reputation of being a welcoming, friendly, community-based club with greens that are always in fantastic condition. Additional neighbouring land was acquired and the course was extended to 18-holes in May 1992. It continues to develop as trees mature and present additional challenges to players of all abilities. In September 1993 Gordon District Council agreed to the sale of 0.8 acres of land for the site of a new clubhouse, which subsequently opened on the 1st April 1994.
To celebrate the 40th anniversary the Club Committee have arranged several events throughout the year, the first being a family fun weekend held in May, when members could play the original 9-hole course, test their skills with various activities or simply enjoy the facilities in the clubhouse. Throughout the 40 years of the club one thing has remained unchanged and that is our Club Steward, Frances Fowlie, who has been with us since day one and therefore now celebrates 40 years of working at the club. Frances has played an enormous part in building the club’s friendly reputation as she always makes members and visitors alike feel very welcome. Alford has a lot of Society outings every year and this is mainly due to Frances who always looks after them and ensures they return year after year. Other than those currently working from home, Frances must have one of the shortest commutes to work, living right next to the club. As a consequence she is often seen early morning, noon and night at the club making sure everything runs smoothly. Many members will tell you of their own first memories of meeting Frances and one current member tells a story that he joined Alford Golf Club 34 years ago solely based on the welcome he received from Frances when enquiring about membership, having previously enquired at several other clubs in the area. There is a rumour that Frances might retire this year, something that seems hard for members to comprehend. In the meantime she is gradually taking a step back as she hands over the reins to her daughter, Karen Reid, who has been employed at the Club for a not insignificant 30 years. We certainly hope that Frances continues to play an integral part in the running of the Club for many years to come.

ALFORD COMMUNITY CAMPUS
An exciting initiative to support the recovery of Scotland’s live music industry has included The MacRobert Hall in Tarland on its itinerary. Genre-spanning acts will appear the breadth and length of Scotland with country, rock, pop, jazz, classical, folk and acoustic genres all being showcased. The MacRobert Hall will host four concerts in 2022 and the first on June 18 is Gaelic super-group and un-challenged champions of straight in the eye Highland music, Daimh. Formed around the turn of the century and taking the name from the Gaelic word for “kinship” Daimh (pronounced Dive) have taken their contemporary take of Highland and Gaelic music to over 20 countries, setting audiences alight from Moscow to San Francisco. Recent accolades include “Best Folk Band in Europe” at the Folkherbst competition in Germany and recent winners of Folk Band of the Year at the Scottish Trad Music Awards. On August 18, winners of Battle of the Folk Bands 2018, Eabhal will drop in. They
came together while based in the Outer Hebrides and alongside traditional songs, contemporary and self penned tunes, the band draws influence from other musical cultures and unites them with in their own music. The 14th October sees Americana singer-songwriter Kirsten Adamson play at The MacRobert Hall. Kirsten’s father Stuart (songwriter and performer in bands The Skids, Big Country and The Raphaels) was a huge inspiration to her throughout her childhood. Elaine Lennon will perform a solo show in Tarland on 18th November. Since starting her musical career in 2018, Elaine has been awarded Nashville’s Songwriter’s One To Watch, has a coveted Danny Kyle Award under her belt and has won creative support for her debut album. Released to high acclaim at Celtic Connections in 2020 it was awarded Celtic Music Radio’s first ever Album of the Year award. She has performed at UK festivals, Nashville’s Bluebird Cafe, opened for artists ranging from Rab Noakes to Eric Paslay and performed headline shows with Grammy winning singer- songwriter Michael Logen. To buy tickets see www.scotlandontour. com or phone 07873 695170 for more information. The Scotland on Tour project, which has been created and managed by Active Events, was made possible by £750,000 of Scottish Government backing and will focus on increasing the number of opportunities to showcase and enjoy live music, while bringing exciting acts to the doorstep of city, towns, villages and rural communities. New gigs will be staged in 25 of Scotland’s local authority areas, from Dumfries and Galloway to the Orkney Islands, with the aim to bolster Scotland’s incredible live music scene and help to aid the recovery of the country’s creative supply chain.
