OUR INSPIRATION: The Lively Experiment

In 1635, early in our country’s formation, a grand and lively experiment was born. After his banishment from Massachusetts for then-dangerous opinions about equality and tolerance for all, Roger Williams established the state of Rhode Island as a haven for democracy, religious freedom, and respect for native populations. Many historians cite Roger Williams as the “forgotten Founding Father” because his principles were 140 years before the signing of the Declaration of Independence and also found their way into the Bill of Rights and the U.S. Constitution. Today, we still look to Roger Williams’ legacy of independent thought, scholarship, and social justice to guide our university community with similar ideals and values.

FIND PURPOSE At Roger Williams University, we don’t just stand by our principles. We live by them. As a private university with a public purpose, we channel our collective effort toward a singular goal – to strengthen society through engaged teaching and learning. Across two campuses, on the coast and in the heart of the capital city, our 6,500 students discover their path and passion while making a meaningful impact within the community and around the world.

GAIN EXPERIENCE

RWU students solve real-world problems throughout their academic careers. We prepare you to be a lifelong learner, an engaged professional, and a global citizen, by ensuring you tackle projects for local organizations and communities, complete internships (locally and abroad), or conduct research with faculty. These opportunities are available in every major, and designed to give you the skills that employers need.

OVER 80

%

OF RWU STUDENTS GRADUATE WITH MORE THAN JUST A SINGLE MAJOR

SET YOURSELF APART The RWU curriculum is designed with flexibility and individuality in mind. In addition to the courses in your primary major, our Core Curriculum gives you the space to explore different ways of thinking and add depth to other academic and career interests you have, or discover new ones. Our Core Curriculum includes a Core Concentration, a fivecourse collection that allows you to dive deeply into one specific academic program outside of your major. This means you’ll leave RWU with significant knowledge and expertise in at least two fields of study. Many students turn their Core Concentration into a minor or second major. For example, you could add a foreign language to your Construction Management major or supplement your Marine Biology major with a Photography minor. Our Core will set you apart with your ability to tailor your coursework and hone your specific skills and interests. Yet, it still leaves room for internships and studying abroad.

SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE, ART, AND HISTORIC PRESERVATION We provide the rigorous technical and design curricula that Architecture professions demand, along with a well-rounded liberal arts education. With one of the most established and longest-running Historic Preservation programs in the country, students learn how to balance history, conservation, and planning concepts.

STANDING BEHIND YOUR WORK It’s one thing to have your work graded by a professor or reviewed by your peers (which happens three afternoons per week). It’s quite another thing to have professional architects critique and connect your ideas in the working world. Every other Friday throughout the year, the School of Architecture runs the Out-to-Lunch program. This networking forum brings current working professionals to campus, allowing them to share experiences and insight from the real world with students and faculty members. These visiting architects also critique student work and interview students on campus for internships and jobs at their firms.

• Each year 70% of Architecture students take part in our signature study abroad programs in Florence, Italy and Barcelona, Spain. • The Master of Architecture is accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB). Read more on the NAAB accreditation here: rwu.edu/go/saahp-accreditation • Our rCloud digital network provides Architecture students the flexibility to work from anywhere, on any device, even when using graphicsintensive applications like Adobe Creative Suite or Autodesk’s AutoCAD and Revit. • All students are assigned their own studio space starting their first year. Each of the 375 workstations in our Samsung Design Studio is outfitted with a 27” Samsung LED monitor where students can access cloudbased software.

SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING, COMPUTING, AND CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT The School of Engineering, Computing, and Construction Management is a nationally-recognized leader in preparing students for a career in their chosen field of study. Students build strong technical skills, learn and work in groups across all engineering specialties, and gain real-world learning experience using the latest technology and equipment.

research for a NASA mission to Mars? As an Applied Math and Biology double major, Hien Ngo ’18 conducted NASA-funded research at RWU to design the interior of a Mars rover. She might one day see her spaceship fly! Hien completed her Master’s in Education at Boston University and is currently a Science Fellow at City on a Hill Charter Public Schools in Boston.

LEARN BY DOING At RWU, learning goes beyond just reading and taking notes. This is learning in action - experimenting and applying your skills in real settings. That’s why experiential learning opportunities are designed within each major. Whether it’s study abroad, internships, student teaching, student/faculty research, or short-term immersion trips, you will have multiple opportunities to try new things and apply your learning in different settings. It’s the act of doing that makes your education extremely personal and relevant, and prepares you to have an immediate impact.

MAKE AN IMPACT RWU will constantly remind you that you are part of something larger than yourself. As a Civic Scholar at RWU, you’ll be empowered to work with community partners to create change. At RWU, we’re not just creating great scholars – we’re creating great citizens.

GROUP PROJECTS The RWU Community Partnerships Center (CPC) helps our faculty create RWU courses that include real-world projects that challenge you to solve actual problems for organizations and partners in the field. Through CPC projects, you’ll earn credit while you learn to work effectively as a part of a team and recommend actual plans of action for community organizations. FORGING YOUR OWN PATH Once you’ve had experience with group settings and community engagement, it’s time to spread your own wings. Internships, research projects, and student theses all become ways for you to leave your mark on a project or organization.

STUDY ABROAD Our world has become increasingly inter-related and learning about global and intercultural perspectives is necessary for success in communities and the workplace.

At RWU you will have plenty of options to enrich your college experience, including the opportunity to study abroad in more than 27 countries across six continents. We’re proud to offer a number of diverse programs in different formats to fit the needs and wants of our student body. Study with partner universities, or participate in field-based experiential programs through semester-long, for-credit options. Join faculty who lead programs across the globe for two-tofour-week contained programs in the winter and summer. These short-term programs provide a culturally rich experience, all

while earning credit. Or, participate in a flagship program tied directly to your academic department – study architecture in Barcelona or Florence, learn about performing arts in London, scuba dive and examine coral reefs in Bermuda, explore construction management in England, or serve in medical relief or public health work in the Dominican Republic. Many of these programs allow students to apply their scholarships and aid – making the cost the same or similar to studying on campus. And we offer several academic and need-based study abroad scholarships to make these culturally immersive experiences possible. Enhance your RWU experience by participating in one of these transformative programs.

A DISTINCTIVE LOCATION Beyond all your campus-based activities, Roger Williams’ historic New England location provides nearby opportunities to engage in diverse settings, as well as tons to explore. The seaside town of Bristol is perfectly situated halfway between Providence, R.I.’s thriving capital city, and the seaside city of Newport, R.I. The town is surrounded by the coastal beauty of Mt. Hope and Narragansett Bays, and filled with parks, bike paths, distinctive shops and beaches.

Newport is home to world-renowned historic mansions, multiple beaches, and a 3.5-mile cliff walk featuring panoramic views of the ocean. Providence is consistently rated as one of America’s favorite food cities by Travel + Leisure magazine and is home to a vibrant theater, arts, and music scene. An easy hour trip north of campus, Boston, Massachusetts is famous for shopping, museums, dining, professional sports, unique events, and many historic sites to explore.
