As we gather today as one Hawk family to celebrate this milestone in your academic careers and mark the turning point of your professional lives, I could not be prouder of all our graduating students. It is an honor to share in this moment together in our university ceremony and school ceremonies, surrounded by your families, friends, classmates, deans, faculty, and staff—all the champions who have made your time at Roger Williams University so special.
As you celebrate your accomplishments and walk across the stage today, I hope you reflect on how your years of effort, work, studying, learning, and growing culminate in this one threshold moment of hearing your name and degree being spoken. You have completed a real-world education focused on social justice and environmental justice, matched by your hard work, passion, and dedication to your degree and personal betterment, that has positioned you for future success. You leave our campus ready for wherever the road will lead you next. Every graduate I meet, I hear the stories of what you have accomplished through powerful combinations of majors, minors, internships, practicums, and legal clinics, and student leadership, clubs, athletics and other beyondthe-classroom experiences. I am extremely proud of the work you have done on campus and in communities across the region. You have learned to be curious, to inquire, research and investigate, and put your skills into practice in helping to make a difference in the lives of others through your coursework and dedication to justice and service. This is the RWU way, and I hope that you carry that learning and passion throughout your lives and careers. And I hope that you recognize all the wonderful values, experiences, and memories that Roger Williams has provided you, in addition to the solid intellectual foundation you have built here.
Commencement is rightfully a moment to celebrate and take pride in the individual journey and academic successes you have achieved. But for you, the Class of 2024, let these years be a reminder that your degree is an accomplishment of your past efforts, but also a responsibility to others you now carry throughout your lives. You leave RWU with an obligation to put your talents in service to our communities and to the land and oceans on which we live and work. Remember that “commencement” derives from the French root word: to begin or to start. Commencement is not just the end of your degree at RWU, but it is the beginning of the next part of your story. The power of a Roger Williams education to transform your life, and through your future work and efforts to transform society, is on display as we celebrate this moment of pride for you and your family, and for the RWU community.
Now, we celebrate the beginning of your time as a lifelong member of the RWU alumni family, where you can take the positive lessons, work ethic, values and resilience you have gained from your university years and chart a path toward a meaningful impact on society, which has always been a core value at Roger Williams. As RWU students and alumni, you are called to give back to the world around you. You have honed the skills in the classroom and through community engagement, through real-world research and clinical practice, that will help you to succeed in employment and further academic endeavors as effective and responsible citizens. You have become the changemakers and leaders the world needs next.
Today you officially join the distinguished ranks of all the Roger Williams alumni that have come before you. I encourage you to stay connected and keep us updated on your achievements, and to offer your time and talents back to the next generation of RWU students. Our alumni are proud to be part of our university and to remain engaged in our shared future, contributing through financial support, volunteering their time and mentoring our students, to help create the Roger Williams University of today. Today, you become a Hawk for life, with all the pride and duties that come with that role and accomplishment.
On behalf of the faculty and staff at Roger Williams University, I offer sincere congratulations on your graduation today. Warm wishes and the best of luck. I hope to see you on campus soon again and would love to hear your success stories over the years ahead. Go soar higher, Hawks, and lift others up with you!
Sincerely yours,
Yannis Miaoulis President

Shabana Basij-Rasikh
Doctor of Humane Letters, Honoris Causa Co-Founder and President of
School of Leadership Afghanistan (SOLA)
Shabana Basij-Rasikh is the founder of the School of Leadership Afghanistan, which provides access to quality education for girls who have been denied an education for many years under the Taliban regime. At the age of 6, living under Taliban rule, Basij-Rasikh began her fight for girls’ education when she and her sister attended secret schools for girls, which inspired her years later to create SOLA in 2008.
After attending a year of high school in the U.S. through the State Department’s Youth Exchange Studies program, she enrolled at Middlebury College in Vermont, where she graduated magna cum laude in 2011 with a degree in International Studies and Women & Gender Studies. She also earned a Master in Public Policy degree from Oxford University and has received honorary doctorates from SOAS University of London (2016) and Cedar Crest College in Pennsylvania (2019).
At Middlebury, Basij-Rasikh was awarded a Davis Peace Prize with which she built wells outside of Kabul, selected as one of Glamour Magazine’s Top 10 College Women of 2010, and received the Vermont Campus Compact 2011 Madeline Kunin Public Service Award for leadership and service to others.
In 2014, she was named one of CNN International’s Leading Women and one of National Geographic’s Emerging Explorers. She is a global ambassador for Girl Rising, a call to action seeking investment in girls’ education worldwide.
In 2018, Basij-Rasikh was awarded the Malalai Medal, one of Afghanistan’s highest national honors for her work in promoting girls’ access to education. In 2019, she was named to the Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia list in the social entrepreneurship sector. In 2021, the Washington Post named her a contributor to their Global Opinions section; and in 2023, she received the Rolex National Geographic Explorer of the Year award from the National Geographic Society.
In August 2021, days after the fall of Kabul to the Taliban, Basij-Rasikh led the evacuation of the SOLA community from Afghanistan to Rwanda, where SOLA has re-established its operations and now exists as the only boarding school for Afghan girls in the world.

The Honorable Anita Earls
Doctor of Laws, Honoris Causa
Associate Justice, North Carolina Supreme Court 2024 Roger Williams University School of Law Commencement Keynote Speaker
A steadfast advocate for civil rights and social justice, Honorable Anita Earls has dedicated her legal career to championing equality, fairness, and access to justice for all. She currently serves as an Associate Justice on the North Carolina Supreme Court, where she has written opinions on matters including privacy, racial justice, and defamation. She also has emerged as a leading advocate for freedom of speech. In 2020, North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper appointed Justice Earls as a co-chair of the state’s Task Force for Racial Equity in Criminal Justice.
Prior to her service on the bench, Justice Earls founded and served as executive director of the Southern Coalition for Social Justice. In that capacity, she played a leading role in groundbreaking legal battles that have reshaped our understanding of voting rights, racial and economic justice, and equitable access to education. She has served as a Deputy Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights at the U.S. Department of Justice and was a tenacious litigator in private practice, consistently fighting for the rights of the underrepresented and underserved.
Justice Earls’s commitment to social justice is exemplified by her tireless efforts in leading and litigating significant cases that have profoundly impacted marginalized communities. Her representation in cases such as North Carolina State Conference of the NAACP v. McCrory has been instrumental in challenging discriminatory voter suppression laws and ensuring that every citizens’ right to vote is protected and upheld.
Educated at Yale Law School, Justice Earls has used her legal expertise to dismantle systemic barriers to minority voting rights and advocate for policies that promote inclusivity and equity. Her legal acumen, combined with her unwavering dedication to social justice, has made her a trailblazer in the legal community and a role model for aspiring lawyers committed to making a difference.
She has been honored with the Thurgood Marshall Award from the North Carolina Advocates for Justice and has been recognized as a “Woman of Justice” by North Carolina Lawyers Weekly.
A passionate educator and mentor, Justice Earls has lectured on social justice issues at various institutions and has inspired countless individuals to engage in the fight for justice and equality.
The Honorable William E. Smith
Doctor of Laws, Honoris Causa
United States District Court Judge for the District of Rhode Island Adjunct Faculty, Roger Williams University School of Law
Honorable William E. Smith serves as the Judge of the U.S. District Court for the District of Rhode Island and is an adjunct faculty member at Roger Williams University School of Law.
Educated at Georgetown University and Georgetown Law School, Judge Smith’s early experiences in Washington, D.C., fueled his passion for public service. Working in the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee and Democrats for the ’80s, he honed his research and advocacy skills, laying the groundwork for his legal career.
In 1987, he relocated to Rhode Island, quickly establishing himself as a leading attorney in labor and public-sector law. His innovative legal approach, such as introducing flat-fee contracts for municipal legal work, reflected his commitment to efficiency, effectiveness, and public service. Politically active, he supported local leaders like Mayor Lincoln Chafee in their campaigns.
Appointed to the federal bench by President George W. Bush in 2002, Judge Smith introduced innovative judging methods, including digital audio and demonstrative video in decisions and a market-based approach to attorneys’ fees. He was the youngest Judge in the District of Rhode Island’s history, and under his leadership, the court embraced modernization, establishing a court Twitter account, modernizing pro hac vice processes, and initiating pro bono counsel programs for young lawyers. His focus on fundamental fairness, demonstrated in his landmark opinion on sentencing disparities between crack and cocaine, has influenced significant legal reforms.
Since 2007, Judge Smith has imparted his knowledge to future legal professionals at RWU School of Law. His courses, covering federal practice and expert evidence, offer students invaluable insights into legal complexities and the importance of judicial independence. He also served for many years on the School of Law’s Board of Directors, including as Board Chair, as well as on the university’s Board of Trustees.
As of January 1, 2025, Chief Judge Smith will take senior status, continuing his legacy of service and leadership in the legal community.

ACADEMIC REGALIA
The standard academic costume used today has its roots as far back as medieval times, when gowns were worn daily in European universities to identify disciplines of study and provide warmth.
In 1895, American campuses adopted the formal Academic Costume Code based on this historical precedent. The code allows the audience to determine from the costume the degree, academic discipline, and often the institution that awarded the degree.
The academic costume consists of a cap with a tassel, a gown and a hood. The tassel may be in the color of the major field of study, or in gold signifying a doctor. Different tassels are worn by those graduating with honors: white for summa cum laude; white and blue for magna cum laude; and blue for cum laude. The gowns range from unornamental for a bachelor; to longer sleeves for a master; to more ornamental, with three bands on the sleeve and front panel, for a doctor. The hood is bordered in the color of the major field of study and lined in the color of the institution which awarded the degree.
Variations from this standard may indicate academic costuming from foreign universities, or a specific expression of a group or individual.
The standard academic color code follows.
