Some say you can’t go home again, but for Dr. George Mitrogogos, returning to Florida after serving five years in the army was an easy decision. He and his wife, Aimee, knew they wanted to settle in a peaceful, family-friendly community. With its small-town charm, mom-and-pop shops, and proximity to extended family, DeBary was the perfect place.
George grew up in Altamonte Springs and Aimee’s first home was in DeBary’s Glen Abbey neighborhood. Their strong ties to Seminole and Volusia counties — including his wife’s 102-year-old grandfather, who still resides in Orange City, made the couple’s decision easier.
Proximity to work was also a key factor in choosing where to live. Today, Dr. Mitrogogos owns Sanford Dental Excellence, a practice he took over from his father-in-law, Dr. Stephen Seidler. George’s approach to dentistry is rooted in his military experience at Fort Benning and the wisdom he gained from Dr. Seidler.
By offering a wide range of services, George ensures that his patients receive stress-free care without needing to be referred to other practices. His focus on patient comfort is especially beneficial for older individuals who may feel anxious about dental visits, which is one reason he offers IV sedation for all procedures. The efficiency in his practice allows him to maintain a strong work-life balance. Outside the office, he prioritizes family time, embracing the lifestyle he and Aimee sought when they moved to Volusia County.
At the end of the workday, George and Aimee, who works remotely for AFLAC in Accounting Policy, leave their professional responsibilities, pick up their daughters, and as George said, “Then we’re parents.”
The Mitrogogos family enjoys an active lifestyle. One of their favorite pastimes is boating along the St. Johns River in their 20-foot Yamaha jet boat, often cruising to downtown Sanford for dinner. They also love participating, along with staff from the dental practice, in local 5K races, particularly the “DeLand ME STRONG 5k,” which raises funds for cancer research and they also enjoy the “Deltona Love Your Heart 5k.”
When they’re not running, you might find them in Deltona roller skating at Sk8tona or enjoying a meal at My Greek Taverna, a family favorite. Their daughters, Abby (9) and Alana (5), also take weekly horseback riding lessons at KNK Equestrian in Deltona, adding to their full and active schedule.
For George, success isn’t just about professional accomplishments, it’s about building a meaningful life where family is the priority. As for Abby and Alana, do they plan to follow in Daddy’s footsteps? The girls have an ideal plan. They’ll be dentists on Monday, Tuesday, and
Wednesday and nail techs on Thursday and Friday. They have obviously learned from Mom and Dad that weekends in Volusia County are best spent with family! n

Most recognized for excellent customer satisfaction and leading in innovation, Halifax Health is one of the nation’s leading healthcare centers. Halifax Health and UF Health came together in 2020 to bring West Volusia a new option for a higher level of healthcare, the Medical Center of Deltona. This hospital is the only hospital located in Deltona and provides care to not only the Deltona community, but its multiple neighboring cities as well. The Medical Center of Deltona includes 24-hour emergency care with twelve exam rooms, an Intensive Care Unit with thirteen patient rooms and thirty patient rooms on the medical/surgical care floor.
Whether your needs are receiving emergency attention or regular health services, their team of experienced medical professionals provide you with exceptional care during every visit. The Medical Center of Deltona is staffed with top talent and innovative technology, serving the community with compassionate and personalized care in areas such as pediatrics, primary care, medical oncology, urology, orthopedics, and much more! Their surgeons are board certified and perform surgery in specialty realms including cancer, endocrine, orthopedic, urology and also treat patients through other specialized procedures to make a profound difference in their lives.
Focused on one major goal, impacting lives in the community, the Medical Center of Deltona has achieved tremendous success over the last five years and continues to put forth significant efforts in growth and development to meet the needs of their patients. Vice President & Administrator at the Medical Center of Deltona, Ben Eby shared their strategy of expansion with My Deltona Magazine, highlighting on the facility’s plans to build out the remaining space by increasing the Emergency Department to thirty beds, which means adding twelve additional exam rooms and six observation rooms to provide critical services to patients experiencing urgent and life-threatening conditions and to play a pivotal role in the delivery of acute ambulatory and inpatient care. Ben also shares their plan of increasing the Intensive Care Unit to thirty beds by adding seventeen additional rooms on the fourth floor to provide an even greater amount of advanced care for critically ill patients by highly skilled health professionals, experienced in immediate intervention to help save lives. With great excitement, Mr. Eby also reveals their final stage of development with confirming the plans they have for their medical/ surgical floor by adding thirty additional rooms on their sixth floor, which increases the total number of beds available to patients to sixty! “Expansion is the most exciting part of development and our Medical Center was built with a strategy to foster a substantial amount of growth over the coming years to ensure that we never turn a patient away,”
declares Eby. Additional factors that have played a major role in the Medical Center of Deltona’s significant expansion include a Medical Oncology clinic that opened in 2024, as well as aiming to become a Bariatric Center of Excellence and a Primary Stroke Center in 2025. The Medical Center of Deltona has a commitment to continually recruiting additional specialties to bring the highest level of care to West Volusia.
With over ten years of dedication to Halifax, Ben Eby started his journey as the Director of Finance for their hospice organization and has helped expand the Medical Center of Deltona, while fulfilling his role as the Administrator for the Medical Center of Port Orange and still having oversight of Halifax’s Hospice Organization. With goals of growth and development in mind and a mission to invest in the community’s needs, Halifax is currently recruiting for top talent in pediatric primary care and is putting efforts towards adding a stroke program and level two cardiology center to the Medical Center of Deltona. Their intentions are to focus on creating a medical center that pro-
vides exceptional quality to all members of our community and surrounding areas. The incredible team at the Medical Center of Deltona is committed to being a health leader in the community as they strive for excellence to provide the best choice for care.
“If you want to drive growth, you have to differentiate your organization apart from the rest by listening to your patients and satisfying their needs,” Ben emphasizes. “Understanding what matters most to each patient is extremely valuable as consumers have choices. Treating every patient with personalized and unique care creates a sense of loyalty and helps establish trust.” Ben shares his sincere passion for making an impact within the community as he concludes by stating, “As we continue to focus on expansion, ultimately the goal is to invest in our community. We want our patients to have confidence when saying we are their number one choice, their number one healthcare option. People may not remember your name, but they will always remember how you treated them!” n

The City of Deltona’s Adopt-A-Street program has been essential in maintaining the city’s cleanliness and fostering community pride. Since its inception in 1996, this initiative has allowed residents, businesses, and organizations to actively contribute to preserving Deltona’s beauty. Under the leadership of Sonia Clay-Harvey, the program underwent a major revamp in 2020, leading to renewed interest and participation.
As of Spring 2025, the program has 76 adoptees and 85 adopted streets with additional applications pending. Volunteers commit to a two-year period, maintaining their designated streets biweekly or monthly to keep Deltona’s roadways litter-free and visually appealing.
By actively promoting the program on social media, the city has seen remarkable growth in participation.
“I make it a priority to highlight each new adoptee on our city’s Facebook page, sharing their commitment along with a photo of their AdoptA-Street sign. This approach has been incredibly effective in driving engagement,” Clay-Harvey explains.
Residents and businesses interested in adopting a street can find all the necessary details on the City of Deltona’s website (www.deltonafl.gov) under the Public Works tab > Adopt-AStreet section. The process is simple:
1. Download, print, and fill out the application from the website.
2. Email the completed application to Sonia Clay-Harvey (sclay@ deltonafl.gov) with the street of your choice for availability.
3. Call (386) 878-8962 for direct assistance if needed.
“All are welcome to join us — individuals, businesses, or organizations. Recently, we gained Deltona Wolfie’s High School Store, LFC STEAM Academy and Sunrise PTA. We also have landscaping businesses that have adopted a street,” says ClayHarvey.
To assist adoptees in their cleanup
efforts, the city provides an initial cleanup kit that includes:
• A tote bag
• A trash picker
• Two 18-gallon trash bags
• An Adopt-A-Street Safety Vest (required during cleanups)
• Gloves and a flashlight (for night cleaning)
• A mini notebook for tracking cleanup progress
• A certificate of appreciation
• Custom Adopt-A-Street signs (one or two) with the adopter’s business or family name (pending approval)
Young volunteers under the age of 10 also receive a goodie bag with a coloring book from the St. Johns River Water Management District, along with crayons and treats.
Volunteers must submit cleanup reports biweekly or monthly, even if no trash is collected. Reports help the city track progress and ensure continued participation. Each report should include:
• The name of the organization or adopter
• Cleanup date and street name
• Number of volunteers
• Amount of trash collected (bags and estimated weight)
If an adopter remains inactive for an extended period, the city will reach out to confirm their continued interest. Inactive streets will be reassigned to new adopters.
Since the program’s revamp, participation has soared. Between January 2025 and today, 28 new adopters have joined, showing a remarkable rise in community involvement.
Sonia Clay-Harvey’s goal is to reach 100 adoptees. “I hope to host an annual recognition banquet as a ‘thank you’ to our dedicated volunteers. If they are keeping up with their streets, they most certainly deserve it!”
The ultimate vision? To have all 456 miles of roadway in Deltona adopted and maintained by dedicated volunteers.

Alarger-than-expected crowd attended the Deltona High School Football Awards Banquet at The Center at Deltona. In addition to the awards presentation, the evening’s festivities highlighted the community, praised family and offered great food.
While extra tables were being set up to sit the happily unexpected big crowd, Deltona Wolf Head Coach Matt Martin estimated that there were about 250 people at the February 23rd event, much greater than the crowd of 40 people that attended last year’s banquet.
Dignitaries included Senator Tom Wright, Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood, and the Deltona Chapter of the Veteran Enforcers Motorcycle Association (V.E.M.A).
Before the ceremony began, Senator Wright spoke to My Deltona Magazine regarding the importance of the banquet. “It means a lot to the community,” he said.
Senator Wright noted that the football players seeing himself, Sheriff Chitwood and V.E.M.A at their banquet is a sign to the young men that “we care for them, we worry about them and want their lives to be better than ours. It’s a way to honor them this evening and let them know that they are important also.”
The increased attendance is indicative of a community that has embraced Wolf football and the changes Coach Martin has made over the course of his two years at the helm.
The players are embracing those changes as well.
Sophomore center Landon Scott mentioned, “We have a better culture, and our head coach, Coach Matt (Matt Martin), has been doing really good with the football team.”
By better culture, Scott is referring to less conflict between the players, saying, “We’re actually a really big family. It’s not just groups of people. It’s everybody together.”
Coach Martin exudes positivity. A Deltona native, he played on the Deltona High School football team, graduating in 2010.
The culture he has created involves team prayer as a choice, not a mandate. “If they don’t want to praise anybody, that’s fine. It’s about just doing this with your brothers,” he said.
Playing Wolf football also means dedicating your Saturday mornings to a team breakfast that includes the student-athlete’s family. The players take part in a light lift and run, then talk mostly about football.
Coach Martin explained that eating together on Saturday mornings help the players grow and fosters an environment of players caring about each other. All in an effort to bring the success he believes the program can have on a yearly basis.
There has been some improvement on the field in his first two seasons. This past year, they won two more games
than the previous campaign, checking in with a 3-7 record.
Inside the three wins was the standout performance against crosstown rival Pine Ridge High School. The Wolves scored 15 points in the fourth quarter for a come-from-behind 15-12 victory. The winning touchdown came with approximately three minutes remaining in the game.
Academically, the team has improved greatly during Coach Martin’s tenure. When he started, there were about 24 players with a GPA of 3.0 or higher; and now that number stands at 46, roughly two-thirds of the team’s roster.
Sheriff Chitwood took his turn at the podium to speak of the life lessons football teaches, focusing on getting back up after being knocked down and backing a teammate who makes a mistake. He said these experiences help lay the foundation for the student-athletes’ life.
It is a sentiment shared by Coach Martin. He stated to a reporter that when his players graduate high school and become even greater contributors to the community, he wants them to have the ability to battle adversity and respond the right way to tough times.
“These kids care about each other,” Coach Martin continued. “They work tirelessly. They do whatever we ask. Life is about truly finding good teammates, battling adversity and how you respond from that as a man. I think we will have a ton of elite future fathers on our team.”
Many speakers referred to the help and support that parents provide. In a moment that exemplified the community feel to the evening, Coach Martin honored team moms, saying they were a blessing and really took a lot of weight and stress off his shoulders. He also called team moms to the stage for photos and a gift. Sherrif Chitwood echoed those thoughts, thanking all the parents that are here for investing in their sons.
After the awards, sophomore Ed Wiggins, a defensive tackle, paused from enjoying the buffet provided by Italiano’s Pizzeria to state that he was honored to be at the banquet. “It’s an honor to be here with all my teammates,” he concluded.
Junior Desean Fludd, a wide receiver and safety, was asked what the banquet meant to him, and responded with “It means a lot. Receiving an award in front of family and friends, thanking God for this day to be here, and being grateful for many more to come.”
A saying repeated many times by the coaches during the evening was, “The film doesn’t lie, the eye in the sky.” In other words, what you see on the game film is the truth about the quality of a player. Another truism regarding the Deltona High School football team is what those in attendance saw: a closeknit group supported by a community that cares deeply. n

The term “Boricua” is deeply rooted in history, originating from Borinquen or Borikén, the name given to Puerto Rico by the indigenous Taíno people who inhabited the island long before Spanish colonization in 1493. This rich blend of Taíno, African, and Spanish influences has given rise to a vibrant cultural heritage, reflected in Puerto Rican art, music, dance, and traditions. Today, that cultural richness is alive and expanding in Deltona, Florida, where the Puerto Rican community has become an integral part of the city’s identity.
Deltona proudly boasts one of the largest Puerto Rican populations in Central Florida. According to the 2024 United States Census, about 6.5% of Deltona’s and Daytona Beach residents identified as Puerto Rican. This number has grown significantly in recent years, particularly following the devastation of Hurricane Maria in 2017. Many Puerto Rican families sought refuge and opportunity in Deltona, drawn by its affordability and proximity to Orlando. Their arrival brought not only resilience and cultural pride but also valuable economic contributions to the city. “Source: U.S. Census Bureau, 2024 Census.”
The influence of Puerto Ricans in Deltona is unmistakable, spanning the economy, culture, and governance.
Boricuas have established successful businesses in industries such as retail, construction, and services, creating jobs and fueling economic growth. Cultural events, like the Latin Arts and Music Festival, celebrate Puerto Rican music, dance, and cuisine, fostering community connections and preserving cherished traditions.
Local business owners highly represent the spirit of hard work and cultural pride. Franklin and Yoliana Rodríguez, owners of Deltona Auto Parts, shared their gratitude and dedication to the community: “We are proud to serve Deltona and be part of a thriving Puerto Rican business community. Our family’s work ethic and values come from our island roots, and we are grateful for the opportunity to grow and give back here.”
Similarly, Jasmarie and Brenda Rosa, owners of El Coqui Bakery, bring a taste of Puerto Rico to Deltona through their delicious creations: “When our customers walk through our doors, we want them to feel like they’re back home in Puerto Rico. Every bite of our pan sobao, quesitos, and mallorcas carries the warmth and memories of our island. It’s our way of keeping the Boricua spirit alive and sharing our culture with the community.”
For Elsa ilardo, founder of Hispanos Media, being Boricua is about more than business: “For me, being Boricua means carrying a double blessing: we
honor our Hispanic heritage and enjoy being American. Both roots are a true privilege, and we deeply value them.”
City Commissioner Emma Santiago, a long-time resident of Deltona, echoes this pride and gratitude: “As a resident of Deltona for 35 years, I am proud to live in this diverse community, with its potential to lead Florida in cultural diversity and quality of life. I am grateful to have raised my children here and now see my six grandchildren grow up.”
The Puerto Rican community’s contributions extend to education as well. Local leaders advocate for inclusive policies that celebrate diversity, while Puerto Rican educators work tirelessly to ensure Hispanic students feel represented and supported in Deltona’s schools. These efforts create an environment where future generations can thrive.
As Deltona continues to grow, the Puerto Rican community remains a cornerstone of its identity. Their resilience, entrepreneurial spirit, and cultural pride have enriched the city in countless ways. By celebrating their contributions and addressing their challenges, Deltona ensures that the legacy of Boricuas will endure for generations to come. n

Víctor M. Ramos is a passionate advocate for education, community service, and leadership development. With over 20 years of experience, he has played a significant role in shaping policies and initiatives that support economic growth, education, and community well-being in Deltona and the county.
Born and raised in Miami to Puerto Rican parents, as the oldest of two with a younger sister, Ramos’ dedication to public service was influenced by his family and cultural heritage. His leadership journey began with ASPIRA of Florida, a Puerto Rican organization focused on youth leadership development, igniting his passion for education and community empowerment. His father often reminded him, “no es fácil pero se puede,” instilling in him the belief that challenges can be overcome through hard work and determination.
Early in his career, Ramos worked in housing and economic development in Miami’s Wynwood neighborhood, serving as Deputy Director of the Rafael Hernández Housing and Economic Development Corporation (RHHED). He later transitioned into education, teaching Exceptional Student Education (ESE) at Miami Norland Senior High School and serving as Student Dean, where he gained firsthand experience addressing the challenges faced by minority students.
After relocating to Deltona, Ramos quickly became involved in local
government, serving on the City’s Planning & Zoning Board and later as District 5 Commissioner and Vice Mayor. His passion for education led him to teach ESOL at Idyllwilde Elementary School and Daytona State College, where he helped Spanish-speaking adults earn their GED. Through these efforts, he exemplified the belief that, while the path may not always be easy, it is possible to overcome obstacles and create opportunities for growth.
As Director of Bethune-Cookman University’s Deltona Campus, he led educational programs that served nearly 4,000 students, further cementing his role as a leader in higher education.
Beyond politics, Ramos has been instrumental in business development and nonprofit leadership. As the former CEO of Mid-Florida Housing Partnership, Inc., he managed housing programs and financial planning initiatives to support affordable homeownership.
Currently, Ramos serves as Business Development Coordinator for Halifax Health | UFHealth Medical Center. He is also an active board member of various organizations, including the Boys & Girls Club of Volusia/Flagler
County, and the Halifax Health Hospice Advisory Board. In each of these roles, he demonstrates his unwavering commitment to his community, always reminding those around him that “no es fácil pero se puede.”
With a Master of Science in Educational Leadership and ongoing doctoral studies in Organizational Leadership, Ramos continues to be a mentor, bilingual speaker, and advocate for the Hispanic community. Whether through education, healthcare, or public service, his dedication to uplifting others has made a lasting impact on Deltona.
In his free time, Ramos enjoys playing golf, softball, and Dominoes, but his biggest passion is road cycling. He frequently participates in cycling events across the county, embracing sport as both a recreational activity and a way to stay healthy and connected with the community.
His vision remains clear: to uplift and support the community through leadership, education, and service, creating lasting opportunities and a brighter future for Deltona and its residents. And through it all, he continues to live by the words that guided him: “no es fácil pero se puede.” n
