A good friend first alerted me to the George Floyd video. He could see himself or his son lying in George Floyd’s place. To my African-American brothers and sisters: I know that you need people like me, outsiders to your collective experience, to grasp why my friend (and many of you) feel and respond the way you do. I’m listening. I want to be part of the solution, not the problem. You matter to me. Your lives matter to me. Criminal justice reform and changed hearts – these matter too. “Let justice roll down like rivers, righteousness like an ever-flowing stream” (Amos 5:24). I write today as a South Hollander too. As rioters and looters struck communities around us, South Holland’s police, firefighters and village workers quickly sealed the entrances to our village, sparing

our town similar damage. Thank you. In the days that followed, people across cultural lines expressed to me, unprompted, either frustration with how looters trashed ‘their’ stores or gratitude for peace in our town. Through this, we’ve become aware of forces at work, extreme and organized, like Antifa, hijacking legitimate anger and protest for destructive ends. I’m praying, “Lord, show me and all of us who we need to be, moving forward. Help us move beyond the tribalism of Babel to unite us in your truth – the truth that sets us free to move forward together with informed love to pursue gospel-centered reconciliation and justice.” I’m not sure what this will look like. NOTICE TO BIDDERS
The Thornton Township Highway Department will receive sealed proposals at the Thornton Township Hall, 333 E. 162nd Street, South Holland, IL 60473 until 2:00 PM on Thursday June 18, 2020, for the following improvement project: THORNTON TOWNSHIP ROADWAY RESURFACING Bidders are encouraged to mail their bids as the Township building may not be staffed daily for bid drop-off. Doors to the Township Hall will be opened at 1:45 PM on Thursday June 18, 2020 to provide access to interested parties, and so bidders may hand deliver their sealed bids at this time. Bidders are strongly encouraged to leave enough time to address any unforeseen circumstances that may be involved with getting the bids to the Township and ensure their bid is received on time. Late bids will not be accepted. Proposals will be publicly read aloud after 2:01 PM on Thursday June 18, 2020 in the Thornton Township Hall. Seating will be arranged in order to provide social distancing for those in attendance. No bid shall be withdrawn after the opening of the proposals without the consent of the Thornton Township Highway Department for a period of forty-five (45) days after the scheduled time of closing bids. All proposals shall be sealed in an envelope, addressed to Thornton Township Highway Department, attention Geary “Pepe” DePue. The name and address of the bidder, name of the project, and the wording “Sealed Bid” shall also appear on the outside of the envelope. Proposals must be submitted on the forms provided by the Engineer. The Bid Documents, including specifications, are on file at the office of the Engineer, Robinson Engineering, Ltd., Phone: (708) 331-6700, Email: reladministrative@reltd. com, and may be obtained electronically via email upon review of prequalification information. The bid documents will be issued to Contractors for requests received until 12:00 PM on Wednesday, June 15, 2020. A certified check/bank draft drawn on a solvent bank, payable without condition to the Thornton Township, or a bid bond, in an amount not less than ten percent (10%) of the bid, shall be submitted with each proposal, as a guarantee that, if the proposal is accepted, a contract will be entered into and the performance of the contract is properly secured. A performance bond in a sum equal to one hundred percent (100%) of the amount of the bid, with sureties to be approved by the Township for the faithful performance of the contract, must be furnished by the successful bidder. All bids or proposals shall contain an offer to furnish bond upon acceptance of such bid or proposal. The right is reserved to reject any or all proposals, to waive technicalities, to postpone the bid opening, or to advertise for new proposals, if in the judgment of the Highway Department their best interests will be promoted thereby. The Contractor will be required to pay not less than the prevailing wage rates on this project as established by the United States Department of Labor. The Contractor shall also comply with all applicable Federal, State and local regulations. Prequalifications will be required to be submitted to the Engineer by all potential bidders. If, in the opinion of the Engineer and Thornton Township an applicant would not be able to serve the best interest of the Village, a proposal will not be issued to the applicant. Although they are trying to sell their home too, they still love their neighborhood and they are going to miss their friends after they relocate. They also take great care of their lawn and wouldn’t even think about allowing home maintenance to go undone. Beautiful flowers by the front door, a freshly pressure washed sidewalk and driveway and a butterfly garden that would make the greenest of thumbs
envious. They are friendly, courteous and “THEIR HOME IS WAY OVERPRICED FOR THE NEIGHBORHOOD”. Now if I were selling my house, I would want both of these types of neighbors. But if I had to choose just one, I would definitely thank my lucky stars for Mr. and Mrs. Overpriced. Why you ask? Because no matter how lovely the landscaping, no matter how shiny the fixtures, how new the appliances, how clean the floors, how uncluttered the closets and cabinets and how nice the people…OVERPRICED IS STILL OVERPRICED and usually serves to make your neighbors homes look like much better deals. Buyers are doing a lot of research before making offers on homes and you can bet that if your price is significantly higher than the others in your neighborhood, you are at a disadvantage.
