Last week, we saw Jesus wrestling in prayer with his Father. He shrank back in horror at the prospect of choking down a cup filled with his Father’s wrath against sin.

He rose from prayer, however, resolved to do his Father’s will for our salvation. “Your will be done,” he said. Jesus overcame his temptation to go AWOL from his mission as humanity’s Representative.

Only two humans in world history have made crucial decisions as Representatives for the entire human race: the First Adam and the Final Adam (Jesus).
The First Adam enjoyed perfect blessing in fellowship with God in the Garden of Eden. The Final Adam felt the crushing weight of God’s curse in the Garden of Gethsemane. The First Adam, tempted by Satan, rebelled against God and said, “My will be done.” The Final Adam, tempted by Satan, obeyed God and said, “Thy will be done.” The First Adam rebelled on our behalf, bringing down sin’s corruption and God’s curse on his descendants and all creation. The Final Adam obeyed on our behalf, reversing Adam’s curse for all who turn from their rebellion and sin to trust in him.
“For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous” (Romans 5:19, NIV84).

As our Representative, Jesus shares his righteous status before God with all who repent (confess and turn from their sin and rebellion) and trust in him and his obedience on their behalf. Then he fills us with his Holy Spirit who empowers us to pray that we may not fall into temptation (Luke 22:40) and to say, “Your will be done.”
Adam left creation cursed.
Christ his legacy reversed.
