Puerto Chiapas Premium Experience IZAPA ANCIENT DISCOVERY & THE TRADITIONS OF CACAO HIGHLIGHTS

EXPLORE THE IZAPA ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE

Uncover the history of the Mayan civilization and their traditions that have surpassed the sands of time. Explore the ancient Mayan archaeological site of Izapa. Discovered in 1938 by Karl Ruppert and the Carnegie Institution, Izapa was inhabited from 1500 BCE to 1200 CE, with its height of influence ranging from 60 BCE – 100 CE when its population is believed to have reached 10,000. Izapa features a stunning view of the Tacana volcano and structures designed in the Izapan Style. Although, Izapa also features elements of the Olmec culture, and is widely considered to be a bridge between the two civilizations. As you are led through the ruins, discover the culture of the society, its mythology, architectural style, cacao production, and the development of the legendary 260-day Mayan Calendar that many archaeologists and researchers believe originates from Izapa.

SEE STELA 5

Izapa features a multitude of intriguing carvings, but the piece titled, Stela 5, is perhaps the most discussed. The imagery depicts the Tree of Life, a religious symbol traced to many cultures as well as people, plants, and animals. The Tree of Life was significant to Mayans across all of their ancient cities, serving as a reminder of the connection between life on Earth, the underworld, and the heavens.

CACAO TO CHOCOLATE DEMONSTRATION

After learning how the Mayans of Izapa gathered and processed cacao, travel to the nearby village dubbed “Chocolate City” for an in-depth demonstration about this delectable dessert. Cacao trees are very difficult to grow, as they only thrive in climates near the equator. Naturally, the cacao bean that was once treasured by indigenous tribes became an economic vehicle for Mexico as time carried on. Hear about the bean’s discovery and historic roots before witnessing a demonstration to see how they are transformed into chocolate. Enjoy a lively marimba performance as you enjoy a tasty sample to conclude your cultural experience.
