It sucks, but things change. Usually when you least expect them to. When change strikes and you find yourself on a new path, it doesn’t matter whether it’s a planned change or not, it still has the ability to turn your orderly life into chaos. The big thing I’ve found when dealing with change is that attitude plays a huge part in how smooth the transition to your new path is. It’s natural to get discouraged, but you’ll have a much easier transition if you just don’t allow it. Change is as natural as breathing, and if you approach it in the right way, you may just find that this new path you’re on is filled with amazing opportunities. Here are a few tips you can use to make sure you are embracing change instead of just getting through it.

2. Keep your mind and your options open Keeping an open mind means you should always expect the best out of your new adventure. A positive attitude will get you much further and make embracing change easier than a negative one will. Even when it hurts, change often is what is needed to take us to the next level. When you embrace change you put into motion new options and opportunities that will help you achieve your goals. Pay attention to the path, and don’t be afraid to explore a fork in the road when it’s presented to you.

1. Take baby steps When I was younger and we were swimming in Lake Erie, my father used to always tell us to take small steps and watch where we were walking. You never knew what was going to be in the sand or on the lake bottom and watching where you were stepping was a lot better than ending up with a fish hook stuck in your foot. It’s the same with change. One small step at a time makes it much easier to see how change is affecting you. Plus, if you go slowly and watch where you’re walking, you get to enjoy the beauty of a new path. Just racing by to get to the end spoils the beauty of the journey. And when it comes right down to it, change really is just another journey. Even if you don’t know where the path is leading you can still enjoy the sights along the way.

Mystical Voices ~ October 2013 ~ 9

3. Know yourself and trust your intuition You are the one person who knows yourself best — or at least, you should be. If you really know yourself, your strengths and weaknesses you will know which direction to take going forward. Use the life lessons you have learned up to this point, and trust your intuition to guide you so that you don’t end up making the same mistakes again.

… when it comes right down to it, change really is just another journey. Even if you don’t know where the path is leading you can still enjoy the sights along the way.

feeling great about making changes, and if you don’t speak up they never will. Working together and being honest with everyone involved is a great way to explore new options that will ensure everyone gets what they need out of the new experience.

5. Kick fear to the curb I can’t say this loudly or strongly enough — DO NOT let fear hold you back from embracing change. Yes, the unknown can be scary. Yes, you will have to meet new people and try new experiences. If you are feeling really anxious about things, remember point #3 above — know yourself and trust your intuition. If you are really honest with yourself, you know the difference between your intuition telling you to run far and run fast, and your fearfulness telling you that stepping outside your comfort zone is scary.

4. Let others know how you feel

Put on your big girl panties, kick fear to the curb, and do it anyways. You’ll be glad you did.

Sometimes the change we are expected to embrace comes because others in our life have made a decision that affects us. Speaking up for yourself and letting others know how you feel about the changes being imposed on you can help to make the transition go more smoothly.

Embracing change does not have to be scary. If you allow yourself to be open to the new opportunities and adventures that change can bring, you may find it’s just what you needed to take the next step on the path toward living your best life.

It’s entirely possible that the person making the decision doesn’t know you are not

No Peace? No Power; No peace and power? No Purpose; No Peace, Power and Purpose? No Productivity, No Peace, Power, Purpose and Productivity? No Purpose. No Purpose? No Peace – and on and on and on through the loop. We loop back from No Purpose to No Peace. A large wheel which can be managed and embraced for a full and peaceful life. Leadership requires that we personally intend to become a positive influence in the world and in other’s lives while keeping this wheel of Peace moving quietly and deliberately. Let’s look at the word Intend: The dictionary definition is “to stretch out for, to aim at.” “Intention is the fruit of my heart, a seed swelling to burst”. -- It is the product that creates growth and hope. Total Peace must come from the heart – not the mind or body. Perceived Intentions of the Mind are usually temporary and drift with outside circumstances of the emotions and thoughts! This requires transcendence or the embracing of Grace to live in harmony with yourself, all humans that exist, and the earth. The ability to give thanks for all things without judgment brings this Peace. Transcendence – best described as “sending across” which is the openness of your heart to accept, by Grace only, the Divine Nature of the Universe to join completely and intimately with our own Human Nature. It results in a total absence of dwelling in the “knowledge of good and evil”. Rather than give a 3 day seminar on Peace and how to find it, I have printed a document which actually came to me in a few minutes in Pennsylvania on December 9th, 1997 when milking 52 cows for my sister while she was sick and supposed to die. She lives on today serving people constantly with her love and compassion. If you ever find the peace leaving your ministry and daily experience as a Minister and Shepherd of those that you love and serve - - GO TO THE SOURCE. Ask yourself: Why am I not peaceful??? What is the source of my fear? The likely answer is that you have slipped into judgment of another’s words and deeds and ingested them as your own. My

1. I believe that 90% of our lack of peace resides inside ourselves and can be allayed within our own power. 2. Any lack of peace that I am engaging is often a direct response to the notion that "I am out of control". 3. "Out of control" is often a wonderful place to be - hand it to the Universe where all wisdom and love abides with abundance that we cannot understand but can accept. 4. When I comprehend that I am a Divine and Human Spirit - - WHICH has been LOANED a soul and body for the celebration of life, then any notion of losing something or someone that I OWN goes away. I own nothing but my desire for PEACE. All other life is a byproduct of this understanding.

Mystical Voices ~ October 2013 ~ 15

suggestion is to “let it go” and focus on your own Divine Nature first and then allow yourself to prayerfully see only their Divine Nature for awhile until the feelings and circumstances pass. In your future and ministry, each day take 30 seconds and take a reading on your most inner peace. If it is scrambled, confusing, disturbing or just seriously hollow - - take a moment to address your INTENTION of PEACE. Take that long, long journey from your mind to your heart! Allow yourself to “feel” your intention of peace rather than think about it. When you think about your frustration for too long, we also embrace all the reasons why we don’t have peace and often start blaming ourselves or others! Make love to the intention in the heart and watch the whole universe turn and embrace your intention and desire. The intention --- your “stretching out and aiming at PEACE” shifts all that exists to assist you. Frustrations evaporate; angry people become loving, busy days start to manifest miracles (the shortening of time for events) and your body, soul and spirit steps into a celebration of integrated illuminated transcendent peace and love. Go back to your heart in moments of unrest. Therein lays all Peace in the Universe. It is available to you because you are worthy of it and you are unconditionally loved. Author – Marie Misener My family and I were introduced to Bancroft in 1985 and fell in love with the area. We bought our house and moved here in 1988. Since then we have moved away and back again three times. Our most recent return was at the end of June 2013. We had a house fire in April 2012 and moved away until a new house was built. My husband and I are glad to be home. I began my private Journey to Understanding at an early age and had a great interest in all things Spiritual, mystical and ultimately aimed toward a mysterious destination known as Enlightenment. I realize, and admit, I was also seeking some wondrous and magical “Secret” that could help me change and or improve my personal Reality and Life experience. With the wisdom and loving guidance of many special people, along with an abundance of rather diverse reading materials, I was provided with many of the answers I wanted. As a result, I found myself in an ever-expanding cycle of growing, learning, understand and growing some more – which continues to this day. Somewhere along my personal Path, I stumbled in to the State of Conscious Awareness and my understanding, outlook and world changed dramatically. I am experiencing my Life much differently now, with the abundance of love, appreciation, joy and happiness that was actually what I wanted. I believe that anyone can do this. Originally, this Book (Here- Maybe This Will Help) was intended to help one very specific person, my nephew, Kyle. At the time, Kyle was going through some challenges that could be overcome if he could find his way to understanding and being Consciously Aware. More than anything, I wanted him to have the happiness he deserved. Although it took me years to understand and discover Conscious Awareness for myself, I realized it didn’t have to be as challenging as I had thought – and made it. My Path had been long and difficult perhaps, but the results so incredible and wonderful that I knew I had to share this with others. More importantly, I had to tell people in a way that they would immediately understand and begin to apply to their own piece of the world. People like Kyle, who were trying to overcome feelings of selfdoubt and unhappiness but needed some kind of help a lot sooner than what I had gone through! During the inception of the book, my husband, Doug, became my student/captive /audience/sounding board and greatest supporter. As a direct result, Dough has attained his own Conscious Awareness Mystical Voices ~ October 2013 ~ 17

and he is experiencing his Life so differently now that he will never go back to the way it used to be. He is enjoying his experience of Life with a renewed outlook. He says if he can do it, anybody can! I wrote the book to convey a simple message: Although you may think or believe your personal reality and life experience cannot be changed or improved you are looking at your world the wrong way. You may not be able to change the “What” you are looking at and or experiencing but you certainly can change HOW you fee. You do have a choice and you have free will to feel good or bad. (Knowing and accepting this one concept alone has already stirred you into becoming more Consciously Aware – if you were not already predisposed) When you change and improve how you look at your world, your world will change and improve. Certainly, there are a great number of people who are much farther along in their personal” Journey to Understand” than others and have already reached their own level of Conscious Awareness and that’s Wonderful. This book is intended for those who did not realize there was even a Journey to have. I have already started writing my second book, Maybe This will Help Two, designed to further assist those who have recently entered the State of Conscious Awareness. Besides now being an author, I have many other hobbies –too many to list here. As well I am a very proud mother of three wonderful sons and I have the most beautiful, talented, intelligent grandchildren in the world, as does every grandmother. My husband is a long distance truck driver and I often have the pleasure of going with him on some of his trips in Canada and U.S. When not traveling, I enjoy my private, quiet time at home. Marie will be signing copies of her book at Mystical Creations Gift Gallery in Bancroft, Ontario on November 2, 2013 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Come out and meet her, or contact her at misener.publishing@gmail.com

By Lisa Birnesser

Managing change can be really tough, especially when you are trying to juggle work, family and personal issues all at once. Just when you think you are getting used to a routine, something in your schedule switches. Nobody really likes their day changed up. You wake up in the morning and have an agenda of all the things you want to accomplish. And life just happens. It’s what you choose to do with your circumstance that makes the difference. The fact of the matter is that change is inevitable. Time marches on whether you are conscious of change or not. What you see around you only appears to be a constant in our lives, but in fact there are changes happening every moment.

Change can happen in of two ways. First you can make a decision to change a thought or behavior because something no longer works in your life. This is when you begin to have signs that you can’t ignore that something different has to happen. The more you become aware of something you want to change, you begin to see signs you can’t ignore. The other reason people make changes are because they have to. In other words, you have only two choices; you change or know there are consequences about to happen if you don’t. It’s when you have ignored or pressed through all the warning signs that something wasn’t working.

Learn to dance with change rather than resist it If you don't like something change it; if you can't change it, change the way you think about it. ~ Mary Engelbreit

Do you fear change? Change is a funny thing. You may want to make an improvement in your life but something stops you dead in your tracks. It’s called fear. Fear can disguise itself in many ways, the biggest being a battle to see or do things in a new way. The key is that the desire to change far outweighs the need to continue the habit.

How can a disaster actually be an opportunity? When you get tragic news, the first instinct is to fix it. Problems don’t always fit into a mold and have a clear cut solution. When a tragedy hits your flight or fight system kicks takes over and it’s difficult to see the issue clearly. Give yourself room to breathe and connect with those you trust. This can be a buffer to help you clearly see options for change The harder you attach yourself and try to control the situation, the more difficult it is to see your answer. Your life may have just opened up for a new opportunity that may be bigger and better that before. Dancing with change rather than resisting it relieves stress and self-imposed pressure. Letting go and allowing the process of change to unfold can birth a new chance.

Mystical Voices ~ October 2013 ~ 20

Bracing for the worst to happen Years ago there was a popular book called “Worst Case Scenario Survival Handbook.” Your mission was to out-survive your opponent. Many people embrace this philosophy, so a plan can be devised to deal with change in front of you. While this may work for some people, use caution in this approach. This can trigger worrying about what could happen. Instead, allow the fallout to clear before creating a path for change.

“The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.” ~Alan Watts

Taking charge and managing change allows you to feel empowered during transition. However, you can truly benefit from shifting how you look at the situation and getting the support to see you to the next level.

Lisa Birnesser owns and works as a stress coach at Stress Relief Solutions. For over 25 years she has worked in the health care field, studying stress relief techniques. Mystical Voices ~ October 2013 ~ 22

By Barbara Becker In the next ninety minutes, I was seated on a SouthWest Airline flight from SkyHarbor Airport, asking God, “Why are you having me changing my plans?” And just as soon as I asked this question, I said to myself, “By the time this is done, I will know the answer.” Now, I could settle into the present task at hand. For Penny, her life changed after the elective surgery, because of an unexpected complication of bleeding inside her foot. She asked me, “Why did this happen?” I told her, “Sometimes things don’t go as we had planned. Even though your surgeon performed the surgery competently and carefully, complications can occur. Things just happen. We don’t have control over these situations. The best we can do is to walk through it with grace.” Sometimes things don’t turn out the way you thought they would. You may find yourself scratching your head, “Gee whiz, what happened here?” Schedules change, people are interrupted, complications arise. Any number of reasons can affect the outcome of your plans. Are you able to step back for a moment and realize there’s probably a very good reason? When my friend, Penny, called me from California, in 2004, asking me to jump on the next flight to San Jose, I put aside my plans to facilitate a spiritual workshop and postponed appointments with clients. Why would I do this? Penny had foot surgery four days prior and developed a severe complication. She asked for my ability to help her in healing. She knew her predicament was serious and she desired hands on assistance and guidance. Of course I would go. At the same time, I didn’t know how long my services would be required out in California.

My job was to help her heal and guide her attitude in the most positive way. I already knew from my claircognizance, that she would have a good outcome. I reminded her that she already knew this too, because she asked me to come. She didn’t understand how my healing abilities work, nor did she need to. Since I don’t do the actual healing, my job is to be the channel for the physicians and beings of light on the other side who work through me. A miracle occurred while I channeled the healing for her foot. Her surgeon found the evidence of this miracle during the emergency surgery he performed on her foot. The details of the miracle are revealed in my book, “Enclosure- A Spiritual Autobiography”. Penny made a complete recovery. While I was out in California, another spiritual healer performed in my place at the workshop back in Arizona. There have been times when I have filled in for others when they couldn't meet an obligation. Mystical Voices ~ October 2013 ~ 23

For Penny and me, our lives didn’t go as planned during the two weeks I was with her. Or did it? Perhaps, she was meant to have that complication as a lesson her soul signed up for in this lifetime. For me, everything turned out just fine. I was fulfilling my Divine Life Purpose. I was able to experience one of the miracles that occur with my channeling for clients. Now, I understand when my life doesn’t go as planned, there is a good reason for it. It’s more important to just be in the moment and go with the flow of life, and be grateful for who we are.

By Carol Ann Brazier

Stress levels are sky rocketing as people are trying to keep up with all the Work/Life challenges in this age of “hyperchange. Change is not an isolated incident in your work and personal lives; change surrounds us on a daily basis. The sheer volume of change is starting to overwhelm many of us, if not today, then likely by tomorrow. If you're feeling overwhelmed, try taking a break and listening to relaxing music. Playing calm music has a positive effect on the brain and body, can lower blood pressure, and reduce cortisol, a hormone linked to stress. Calm Down and Breathe... For the next few moments... We are going to stop doing... And just sit. Become aware of your breath. Focus on the subtle ebb and flow as you breathe in, and breathe out, and breathe in, and breathe out, and breathe in, and breathe out... You have just experienced a relaxing, albeit brief, time-out. When practiced throughout the day, this breathing exercise can reduce your stress level significantly! Have A Laugh Laughing releases endorphins in the brain, which are the body's stress-reliever hormone. Lighten up When the body absorbs sunlight, it enhances the effect of mood-stabilizing chemicals such as serotonin. So enjoy lunch out in the sunshine or walk a few blocks during your afternoon break. Take a Mental Mini Vacation No tickets are required, no money spent ...Picture yourself on a tropical island or wherever you'd rather be instead of here, stressing out. It will give you a few minutes to unwind and relax instead of focusing on work. Mystical Voices ~ October 2013 ~ 25

Cut Out What You Can Say “No” to extra projects, invitations, and social activities you don’t have time or energy for. Anchor A State Of Relaxation Anchoring is a useful NLP technique for inducing states, such as relaxation, calmness, peacefulness. 1. Recall an experience with the resource you require. For example recall a time when you felt relaxed. What did you see, hear and feel in this experience. 2. While your experiencing this state, bring your thumb and forefinger together to anchor this state. 3. Recall a few other experiences when you felt calm, peaceful etc. and anchor each one of them by bringing your thumb and forefinger together again. 4. Now it's time to see if it works, this is where we break the state, you can count to 10, stand up , think of something else and then test your relaxation anchor to see if it reproduces the desired state. 5. Repetition is the key, the more you repeat this exercise, the stronger your relaxation anchor will become.

Carol Ann is a Master Coach and certified International NLP Trainer, BioPsycho-Social Psychotherapist, Hypnotherapist, Executive Life and Business Coach, Stress & Wellness Consultant by the Canadian Institute of Stress , and accredited trainer for Emploi Québec. You Can Change Anything!! I’m sure that you’ve come into contact with someone who has reached a certain stage, who are stuck in a mind-set that they will remain single for the rest of their lives. Often, you’ll hear them say things like “It’s too late; I’m not going to meet anyone now.” The same goes for people who feel that promotion or opportunity has passed them by and now it’s just too late. This is just another form of being held ransom by your psychological fear. It is never too late. I love the quote by George Eliot: “It's never too late to be what you might have been.” A client of mine told me once that she really loved to play and be silly - being 65 years was just like being 5 years old to her… she said the only difference was that she had more money!! She certainly did not buy into any ideas of it being too late to do whatever made her feel joyful and happy. When you make excuses or put your focus upon your perceived blocks, you block positive people and situations from manifesting themselves in your life. These people and situations could bring you unlimited amounts of passion and joy to your soul. The soul is ageless. It’s eternal. That’s why a lot of people say: “I really don’t feel that old.” In reality, it’s your physical body that will age – not your soul. By tapping in to your soul and the power of your spirit that flows through it, you can feel youthful as it brings you energy and vitality to your physical body when you need it most. It comes down to how you approach life as well as how you’re taking care of yourself. If you really believe that you are too old – then you know what happens, you just get older…. You really do create what you put your attention on. I’ve known many people who don’t give in to the whole notion of what you can or can’t do at any age in your life. It is our society’s conditioning that dictates how we should act at a certain age.

Here are a few tips on breaking free any beliefs that ‘it is too late’ or ‘I’ve missed my chance’  

 

    

Take on an attitude of “It’s never too late.” Try something new every day… Find new things that give you joy. Explore – even if it is just around the block or a wee jaunt down the road. Believe in yourself. Don’t listen to others if they say things like “You are too old.” If you are passionate about something, you can achieve it! Associate with people who do rather than say. Sign up for that evening class you’ve always wanted to join. Don’t let your excuses hinder your potential to achieve. Don’t live a life of regrets, and become one of those who say: “If only I had …”

Can words and music really affect water? Dr. Masaru Emoto, a doctor of alternative medicine from Japan, has conducted many experiments on water crystals and have found that words and music have both positive and negative effects on water. Dr. Emoto’s experiments have been published into several books, one of them the well known book The Hidden Messages in Water. His findings show that music has a big effect on water and therefore, on us as well, since we are largely made up of water.

have the same results - instead, rings of cracks showed up when the water exposed to rock music was frozen.

Dr. Emoto put water into containers and wrote or typed different thoughts and feelings on labels and put them on the containers. Immediately afterwards, the water was frozen and the combination of a microscope and highspeed photography resulted in photos of water crystals. Beautiful water crystals were formed when Dr. Emoto used beautiful words, such as love and gratitude, while misshapen and distorted crystals were formed when slang or swear words were used. Polluted water formed ugly crystals, but after polluted water was prayed over, prettier water crystals resulted.

Every piece of music has different frequencies, and these frequencies can reach different parts of our body to assist our immune systems and minds to achieve healing and other positive effects. Dr. Emoto has said that he sees energy as vibrations moving through matter. These vibrations are called hado by Dr. Emoto. Hado translates as “wave motions” or “vibrations.”

Such amazing findings show that words, both written and spoken, can actually have an effect on water. But what about music? Dr. Emoto also did these water crystal experiments with music. He put water between two speakers and turned on a specific piece of music for several hours. Then the water was frozen and photographed by Dr. Emoto. Classical music such as those by Beethoven and Bach resulted into beautiful water crystals. Dr. Emoto also found that the Tibet Sutra and the Kawachi Folk Dance all produced pretty water crystals. However, rock music did not

These results by Dr. Emoto and other scientists since then have shown that some music have healing properties and others don’t. What’s even more amazing is that music actually has an effect on a non-living, physical matter. Since 70% of our bodies are made up of water, we can apply the healing properties of classical music to our own bodies.

For example, listening to “The Moldau” by Bedrich Smetana can reduce irritability and energize the lymphatic tissues of the body. Dr. Emoto attributes this to the hado in the music that can cancel out the hado of irritability. The music also resonates with the hado of lymphatic system. Other examples include listening to “The Blue Danube” by Johann Strauss II will revitalize your central nervous system, while listening to the opera “Lohengrin” by Richard Wagner will remove the hado of self-pity from your thoughts. In all, Dr. Emoto and his research and findings on how music affects water has profound implications for us and the role music plays in our lives.

One of the lessons I have learned from being a diabetic and a heart attack survivor is the importance of living for the moment. It’s so easy to become distracted by all the “stuff” of daily life that the dreams and pleasures of each moment get forgotten, or worse, set aside. We no longer live for the present moment because our thoughts get caught up in the next big problem or in rehashing something that happened years ago that we haven’t let go of. Until something comes along, like a heart attack, to remind us that this moment is really all we have, it could be our last, and if we don’t pay attention to it, it will be wasted instead of enjoyed. As far as heart attacks go, mine was a pretty mild one. But it was enough of a wake-up call to make me want to change. Add diabetes into the mix and I got downright mad at the situation. Because even though I wanted, and still want, to be healthy and make changes and live each moment just for itself, I know I’ve not been very successful at it up to this point. Why? Mostly because I was afraid. For the first two years I sat in my house, afraid to do anything in case it triggered another heart attack. Mystical Voices ~ October 2013 ~ 31

Lesson One: Letting Go of the Future The first lesson I had to learn was to let go of the future. By that I mean I had to quit worrying about what might happen before it happens. Instead of saying “I’d like to go for a walk, but what happens if I get chest pain out there and can’t make it back home,” I had to retrain myself to say “I will go for a walk today, and now is the perfect time.” I found that if I was worried about the chest pain, I would sit back down on the couch and not move for the rest of the day. The moment to take action was wasted because I worried about what might happen before it even had a chance to happen. But, if I accepted that I felt good in that one moment when I decided to go walking, put my shoes on and headed out the door, then I was usually fine. Sure there were, and still are, times that I have to stop and catch my breath, but now I see those moments for the gifts they are as well — a chance to really notice my surroundings.

Lesson Two: Pay Attention to Nature Do you know what a gift it is to be able to take pleasure in the smell of wild flowers, freshly cut grass, or the river? The sight of ducks playing in the water, or a squirrel jumping from branch to branch? Or the feel of a spring breeze gently caressing your skin? There are days when I could happily spend the whole day just sitting on a rock letting the smells, sights, and feelings of being outside wash over me. My favorite moments are the ones where I am sitting on that rock, and I can take a deep breath and know that for just this one moment in time everything is absolutely perfect in my world. There is no future to worry about, no past to agonize over how I could have done things differently. There is only now, and in this moment everything is exactly as it should be.

Being in nature is a wonderful way to live for the moment. When you take the time to reconnect with nature, whether it’s to take a walk, ride a bike, or just sit on a rock, you realize that all of nature lives for the moment. We humans have got so messed up stressing over the things we can’t control. The best stressreliever I know is to get outside and really be a part of nature, because at that point you can’t help but be in the moment. Going back to my example of the walk, I found that no matter how crappy I was feeling at the time, the moment I opened the door and stepped on to the sidewalk, I started feeling better. Even though for the time being I have to trudge through the urban landscape of downtown to get to the green stuff, as long as I could breathe in reasonably clean air and feel the sun on my face, even those moments where I have to deal with people in my space become tolerable. Seeing them rushing about just makes me more grateful that I can choose my moments and what I do with them.

Lesson Three: Be Mindful of Your Choices A lot of the fun of living in the moment comes from being able to make the choice of what to do each minute of the day. There is responsibility too, in making sure that you accept that the choice you make for this moment will have an impact on all the moments that follow it.

Being mindful of what you are doing and why you choose to spend time doing it can be a hard lesson to learn. It can be a frustrating one too if you have trouble staying focused. Take this article, for instance… I knew that when I chose to sit down and write this article, that I would also be committing to spending the next 45 or 50 minutes with pen and paper, engaged in the task of creating Mystical Voices ~ October 2013 ~ 32

something. So the choice to write an article in one moment has a definite impact on the next several minutes. It means my butt can’t leave the chair until it’s done, that my mind has to stay focused on one topic until it’s done, and any other thoughts that don’t relate to the current topic have to be set aside for the time it takes to get everything I want to say down on paper. It also means that I have to be mindful of each and every word that goes in to the creation of this article, because it’s very easy for me to just start spewing out whatever comes to mind. And as you’ve no doubt noticed, I can ramble with the best of ‘em! If I’m not paying attention to where my thoughts are heading, it’s easy to get dragged so far off topic that the only way back is to just stop and start over. It’s also possible to hit a roadblock where the thoughts just stop. If you’re not mindful of the moment when that happens, you can find yourself crashing head first into the barrier. The moment has passed, and you’ve missed the train of thought you were supposed to be on.

Lesson Four: Let Go of the Past Which brings me to the fourth lesson I’ve learned about living for the moment… Life is too darned short to live in the past. And I’ll be perfectly honest with you here — this is the one lesson I still struggle with on a daily

basis. I’m not good at letting go, and I still spend way more time than I should thinking about the past. Even though I know I can’t change it (and if I’m really honest I probably wouldn’t if I could since it’s brought me to where I am today), it’s still there rumbling around in my mind doing its level best to interrupt my present. Learning to accept the past for what it is, is one of the biggest obstacles I’ve faced in my quest to live each day in the moment. I’ve found that sometimes the best way to handle it is to spend a few minutes wallowing in the memories, and then just say “thank you” and send them on their way. Sometimes, too, thoughts of the past can serve as a good reminder of why it’s so important to stay focused on the present. Like those rare moments that I catch myself thinking “Gee, I wish I had a cigarette right now,” and then I remember all those cigarettes of my past and just how good they were for me. That’s when the past shoves me firmly back into the present, and in a hurry too. I have no desire to repeat those hospital visits, thank you very much. These days I try to live for the moment and be conscious of my thoughts as often as possible. I’m still working on it, and some days are definitely better than others. One thing I’ve noticed is that the more I pay attention to each moment, the less stressed I am about what tomorrow may bring. Who knows… I might not make it to tomorrow, and that makes me determined to enjoy today’s moments to their fullest.
