Kristina Naylor, a student in the Commercial Art Academy at Tampa Bay Technical High School, was awarded a bronze medal in the pin design contest at the annual National Leadership and Skills Conference and SkillsUSA Championships. The conference was held June 20 - June 24, 2011 at the Municipal Auditorium, the Kemper Arena, H. Roe Bartle Hall, the Downtown Marriott and the Downtown Crown Plaza in Kansas City, Missouri. Over 5600 outstanding career and technical education students joined in the excitement of Summer2011

to test the skills needed for a successful entrylevel performance in given occupational fields. Pin Design Contestants present their state-winning pin along with their artwork and participate in an oral presentation regarding all aspects of their creation of the design. The student explains how the pin represents the state, its unique qualities and why another SkillsUSA student Page_5
or adult member would want to wear it/trade for it. Presentations should include details of how the design evolved, what equipment/resources/software were used. Contestants are judged on whether rules were followed, creativity and appearance of the design and how it represents the state and factors such as poise and communications skills. Use of visual aids is encouraged. Chair Steve Lick, KnowBell, LLC, Michigan chairs the national technical committee for the pin design contest. The national education team assists the national technical committee. Members include: Marilyn Anderson, Virginia Beach Tech Center, Virginia Beach, VA. and Donita Massing, Miami Valley Career Technology Center, Dayton, Ohio. Lowe’s Companies, Inc and Office Depot also supports the competition. tttt
