ART A CA D

The Art Academy Club has been rebranding itself. We have relaunched a new quarterly magazine, The Art Academy Club Magazine, an important step in the development of our club. I’m really happy with our members and the direction we are headed. Despite being sick, I somehow put this magazine together, only falling asleep on my computer twice. I finished with help from the magazine committee and an enormous amount of guidance from Mr. Bayonet. I’m already looking forward to future projects and for what we have in store this year. I hope you enjoy what we’ve put together and continue to keep up with our adventures and happenings.

Everyday, my peers and my mentors inspire me. I believe that art is an amazing way to express yourself emotionally and physically. When I lack inspiration, I turn to social media to help spark some ideas for my next piece.

I’m inspired by the little things in life. I love to follow other artists on social media. I can look at their art for hours and it encourages me to do the best I can. I love to motivate myself to go big or go home!

I am inspired by all the people around me and there ideals as artists Their inspirations add up to be mine, therefore making me take a big step for everyone and help lead them in what comes next in the future.

What Inspires you to be a leader?

david H. Treasurer

The thing that inspires me as an artist is the need to create and put my imagination in a tangible form. What inspires me as a leader is the ability to have my ideas executed by others.

I’m inspired by optimism. I’m also driven by the fact that there are always problems that need to be solved.I strive to find the best solution, generating new ideas, one after another.

A sense of family and security. When there are people who send positive vibes, it helps get my creativity flowing. As a leader, those positive vibes inspire me to be a role model and create a sense of unity for everyone.

‘Like Never Before’ can mean a lot of different things, but to me it shows how we are changing for the better. I decided on ‘Create Like Never Before’ because I think as designers, we keep creating and imagining things that have never been done before. We are always innovating. We are different from anyone who has come before us, and anyone who comes after.”, says Kayla.

all together into something she was proud of. When Kayla originally finished her design, she said she never thought it would get very far. Many of us understand what it’s like to not be completely confident in our work. She said the fact that she got so much support, really helped build confidence in her work.

Kayla wanted to add the year’s theme with her own twist. So many ideas had been flowing through her head and she worked her hardest to mix them

Advertising Agencies In Commercial Art 6, the class is split into four separate advertising groups, or ‘companies’. Photography being the main subject, each advertising ‘company’ competes to have the most presentable AD for their audience. Dynamic photography, black and white, team work, and pitching are a few of the many lessons taught with great precision. Each advertising group uses the Adobe Design Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign) to enhance their brand to be bought and announced market ready, above the other competing groups. Individuals blossom in making themselves known against and with their student peers, to create their own style and improve their techniques in the Adobe programs. written by: Jacquiline G.

Q: Who are you and what do you do? Sophia: I’m Sophia Alonso and I’m a freshman! I usually draw animation using traditional and digital tools and platforms. Q: What made you choose to go to TBT? Sophia: Definitely the commercial art program! Plus it was close to my sister’s school so it was also easy when it came to transportation. But I was most interested in the art program. Q: How did you find out about CAA? Sophia: While doing school researches and finding out information about different high schools. I learned about the programs a lot of schools had. Most only had art as an elective, but TBT caught my attention because it made art a focus, which is what I wanted. Q: How have you enjoyed the Commercial Art academy so far? Sophia: I love it! I love it so much! At my old school we had an art teacher and he didn’t really walk us through things. He’d give us a project and tell us to recreate it with no explanation on how to get from point A to point B. I love how here in CAA they’re actually helping to build on our strengths.

Q: What was the inspiration for the poster you designed? Sophia: When I was in middle school, I remember they had a poster hanging in one of the halls near the office that was similar. It said something similar to “reading will take you places”. They made it with a long road surrounded by trees. I always saw it when I went into the office, so it really stuck with me. Q: What are your goals as you continue through high school? Sophia:I definitely plan to stay in Commercial Art as I go. My main goal for school is to be valedictorian! That’s what I’m going to be striving for. I don’t want to only focus on school, I also want to take time for my friends. I also might try and win art scholarships so that it can benefit me in the future. I definitely want to focus on bettering myself as a person and the artistic aspects, because I think there’s always room for growth.

These were the final 10 poster illustrations created by the students from CA1.

I

think the thrill of knowing you won’t be in class is an amazing feeling all on its own. Unless you are one of those people who love school so much they basically live for it. Fellow members of the Art academy club were told that we would be going on a field trip to Orlando. The faces in the room lit up when given that field trip form. We were told it was graphic expo. I honestly had no idea what would happen at this graphic expo, or what to expect. I had never been to one and I don’t believe the other club members had either, so it was all new. We all got on the bus to Orlando wearing the same commercial art t-shirt. We were excited about what was to come. It was an hour ride yet it did not feel that long. When we pulled up to the front of the building we were met with the beautiful architecture of the convention place. It was white with glass widows everywhere and huge. We got off the bus and headed for the escalators. The interior was big. We saw the infographics place winners displayed on the side when first coming in. There were both high school winners and adult winners.

They all were amazing and unique. There were different things with different looks, yet you could clearly see why each one won. We took a quick club photo and headed for the meeting area. We sat in two rows. There were other schools there. We waited for everyone to arrive before starting. A professional looking woman stood up to speak. She asked each class to stand and say their school name. She picked the loudest out of the group and called them the leader but our school rejected that comment. She asked a very important question “Is print dead?” Most said no with a few yeses and one maybe. She asked why the ones who thought print was dead, felt that way. They responded that most things are digital so the need for print is not necessary. She rebuked these statement by saying print is everywhere and is only progressing. She showed us a PowerPoint slide that depicted facts / statistics on the printing industry. Like how they use renewable resources and how much of everyday things are print. She passed around poster and booklets with print to see the different ways to

use print. There was a poster of a chocolate bar that you can feel the texture. I almost want to smell it because it looked so real and felt real too, but thought that might be weird. There was another poster of the show Spartacus, you could feel the blood and the words on the poster. In the booklet there was a black page that when you put your hand on it, it would change white leaving your hand print. That one was my favorite. It really made you think about the ways print could be used to display something. She showed us a video about elevators speech, which I have to admit, I had not heard of it, but the video made it clear. It showed two guys with a girl, she asked them if they could help her which her elevator speech and if they wanted to hear it. They laughed at the girl but she seemed unfazed. She asked them every so often and the reaction was the same. When both the girl and two guys were met with a potential employer, the two guys gave him a crumbled piece of paper and said “read this” and ran off. The girl who had been practicing her elevator speech this whole time, presented herself to him and began her speech, and it ended there.

AAC | pg 19

The presenter talked about the importance of an elevator speech. How it could get you a job or not. It also gives you more of a little push than any other person. She also said that you have to tailor your elevator speech to the person you are talking to.For example, you would not talk about print to a videographer and vice versa. She asked a couple of people to stand up and have their friend talk about them to give an idea of how to talk about yourself to a potential boss. After her speech she let us leave to go through the main floor to see different things the expo had to offer. Our school met up and split into groups. I was in a group filled with my year and our leader Mr. Naylor. We were given a bag and got a free lanyard, then we headed for the expo. There were a lot of machines everywhere and it smelled liked ink but that was not a bad thing. We did not really know where to go at first or where to look. Mr. Naylor decided where to go. We walked until someone in my group stopped and got our attention. It was Martine, she was talking to a random guy at a booth, we all went up to her

AAC | pg 20

and got free posters. We filled our bags with them. Martine somehow knew where to go to get free stuff. We each had a least three bags filled with poster, pens, flyers, candy and weird stuff like glasses and socks. Other than the free stuff that we got, that I have to thank Martine for, we learned some cool things, like how they print cards and how many different papers there are. We learned the different ways print can be used and the things that can be printed. We also had conversations with different people at their booths to see how they made it in the business, if they like it, and any advice they had for us, which was experience all on its own. When we stepped out of the expo to meet with the other two groups, we were a little shocked to how little the other group gotten, they had like one bag half full and our group had at least three. I think they were just as shocked at how much we got as well. It was a little funny. We talked about what we saw and what we thought was cool; each group saw and experienced different things.

We got on the bus to go to the nearby mall to eat. We had an hour to walk around and eat before heading home. The bus ride home was much more quiet because most people were tried, myself included. Many of us fell right asleep. When I woke up, we were at school. I think the people in my group kind of regret getting all the things we did because it was a hassle to carry all it. When we got in the commercial art room I could see the satisfied look around the room. In all it was a great trip. I can’t wait to see where we go next. ///
