Florida SkillsUSA
State Championships Bradenton, FL Another successful trip to the Florida SkillsUSA State Championships is in the books for our Commercial Art Academy. In all we brought back 16 medals, a perfect sweep of the Florida Design Contests, and the president-elect for Florida SkillsUSA next year. As we close another school year three of our academy students will be setting their sites on Kansas City for the SkillsUSA National Championships. The SkillsUSA Championships is the showcase for the best career and technical students in the nation. Contests begin locally and continue through the state and national levels. This is a multi-million dollar event that occupies a space equivalent to 16 football fields. In 2010, there were more than 5,600 contestants in 96 separate events. Nearly 1,500 judges and contest organizers from labor and management make the national event possible. The philosophy of the Championships is to reward students for excellence, to involve industry in directly evaluating student performance and to keep training relevant to employers’ needs. Page_3

ince the 1970‘s, the Commercial Art program has always had some sort of a portfolio review or a Senior Capstone day. A day to showcase the body of work these students have developed over their years here at Tampa Bay Tech High School. In recent years as many of our readers and supporters know we became a nationally accredited academy. With that we decided to put more of a spotlight on not only our graduating senior class but also showcase the academy as whole. From our Commercial Art 1 Freshman to the Commercial Art 9 Seniors. Now enters the birth idea of “smART Night”. In specific, a recap of our 3rd Annual “smART Night” event that took place on May 19th, 2011.
Page_5
At first, knowing the amount of work it would be to successfully pull off this event would be overwhelming for most individuals. Being the creative people that we are, we made sure to include the knowledge, know-how, and participation of our students. After all, this is their event. Leading at the helm was our Commercial Art Academy 2010-2011 President, senior; Gabrielle LeGendre. Along with rest of the officer staff and a hand full of underclassman delegates, we were underway. Similar to any live event where heavy promotion is done, there is always the “uh-oh” moments. Obviously Mr. Naylor and myself had a list of things to prepare for “smART Night”. This included; arrangement of furniture, preparing visuals - both printed and mounted material as well as video slide shows of all the artwork from every class over the past school year. That alone would overwhelm an individual... Oh yes, we still had classes to teach as well.

This being our third event we knew we had to live up to the success of last years event. So we had to brainstorm ways of figuring that out. A great benefit we utilized this year was involving our incredible advisory board members into the event. Not only was their input valued; it was also executed. Our advisory board (which consists of industry professionals, graduates of the program, and college professors) not only suggested to take time out to come an hour early and sit with our graduating seniors and truly critique their body of work but also offer an award that will later be explained in this article. Start time of “smART Night was 6pm EST; our advisory board members began to show up as early as 4:45pm to begin their sit downs with the senior class. We had six advisory board members in total that were able to sacrifice time from their busy industry schedules and sit casually with our students as they imparted some great wisdom, techniques, and praise to our seniors. The response from our senior class was incredible and we as instructors where overjoyed with the positive responses from the advisory board members.

By 7:15pm, room M3 & M3B of Tampa Bay Tech had well over 200 attendees. It was an amazing sight to see. Students, parents, children, friends, classmates, teachers, administrators, district representatives, and industry partners were all networking and viewing the work from our incredible Commercial Art students. As instructors, we knew it was going over well when our district supervisors are circulating the room interacting with parents and students... with smiles on their faces. If there was a “Woodstock” of classroom art events, this was it. The amount of love and praise towards the student generated art and designs go way beyond what words I can type. We had presentations by students, we had live music provided by Kevin Crews (CAA Graduate, 2011). There was caricature drawings being done by Elvin Romero (CAA Graduate, 2011) and Taylor Thor (CAA Junior). The SkillsUSA State President for 2011-2012, Cherise Clarke (CAA Junior) offered “5 Minute Photo Shoots”. A silent auction was underway and food for sale was circulated around the room, thanks to Michael Salazar (CAA Graduate, 2011). All proceeds were going toward the raising of funds for the national trip

to Kansas City, MO for the 2011 SkillsUSA National Championships (refer to page 3 for details). Funds were raised, belly’s were full, smiles were evident. Life was good, and we were just getting started. Another anticipation of “smART Night” were the awards that would be given out. (View the full list of winners located on page 11) These award categories included; “Standard of Excellence, English Honors Awards, Student Choice, Principal’s Choice, Student of the Year, and the newly

instilled Advisory Board Award”. Mr. Naylor and myself not only go through the student’s artwork but also look at conduct, improvements and overall character to decide who receives the Standard of Excellence Awards. Every class level has students honored in this category. Our English Honors Awards are given to the top Freshman and the top Sophomore in the cohort English classes. Angela Don was honored for the Freshman class and Athira Nair was honored for the Sophomore class. Presented by English Department Chair Dave Pritchard. The Student Choice awards were judged by their peers in the Commercial Art Academy. Each CAA class had to submit the best of the best of their work and then student were given voting ballots to choose the top three from each class. Our beloved principal Mr. Scott Brooks had the joy of reviewing over 200 entries for the “Principal’s Choice Award & Photography Award”. After speaking with Mr. Brooks to get the results, he stated “Last year seemed pretty easy
Advisory Board Award This year we presented an advisory board award at the smART Night event. The award was given to a senior that displayed a professional portfolio, presented themselves in a professional manner, and was able to answer questions concerning their future in the graphic design industry. The students were be ready for interviews and electronic portfolio viewing between 5 & 6 o’clock on that Thursday. All advisory board members were invited and encouraged to be part of the review process. Those members present were able to sign the certificate before it was framed and presented it to our outstanding senior

to choose, but this year was tough... so many good entries, it was difficult to choose”. Wrapping up the awards are the last two; Student of the Year and the Advisory Board Award. The criteria for “Student of the Year” reflects the title name of this award. A student who has stood out amongst their peers, went above and beyond expectations set forth and proved to be n outstanding creative artist. This achievement was awarded to Jordyn Williams (CAA Graduate, 2011). Jordyn has won several local and state medals with SkillsUSA and will be representing the Commercial Art Academy at the National SkillsUSA Championships in Kansas City, MO as he competes to place and medal in Advertising Design. Jordyn’s T-shirt designs for SkillsUSA Florida were chosen two years in a row. The accolades Jordyn has achieved in his years here go without question and we were honored to present the “Student of the Year” award to him. A mentioned earlier, our advisory board members arrived before the “smART Night” event and sat with our graduating senior class to review and critique their portfolios. As stated, there was such a positive response from both our students and our advisory board members. The presentation of the digital portfolios and the way the senior class presented their work left several of our visitors amazed. As the night was winding down, our advisory board members began to evaluate through their notes to choose a senior that had an outstanding portfolio held by the criteria of the curriculum and the creativity of the artists. There was a unanimous decision that the award be given to Colleen Drennan (CAA Graduate, 2011). Colleen’s collection of work ranged from creative copy to typography to images that would evoke several emotions to the viewer. She is well deserving of this honor and we will greatly miss her as she continues on to The Ringling School of Art & Design next year. This being my third and half year at TBT, I have seen this class since it’s freshman year. I have seen the good, the bad, and the memorable. When I take a step back and look the amount of creative artistic individuals that CAA has, I become overwhelmed. Not only do we have amaz-

ing artists. But out of the 30+ students graduating from our class alone, almost half of them will be graduating as honor students in white robes. Our class played host over to the past four years to the Technology Education’s Valedictorian (Nick Hernandez, CAA Graduate 2011) and the Salutatorian (Danielle Pressley, CAA Graduate 2011). Over 85% of our seniors from CAA will now go on to higher levels of education to some of the top schools in Florida (UF, FAMU, FSU, UT, USF, Ringling). Several of seniors received numerous scholarships; Tyler O’Banion - FSU Alumni Scholarship, Takara Williams and Gerard Anthony - Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office Scholarships, and many more.

In closing, I find it hard to truly identify the feeling of what an amazing program Commercial Art is. “smART Night” is only a small piece of a very unique and creative puzzle. Our honored students are like great works of art - but you must be at the right distance to appreciate them. If you are too close you cannot see the whole image; if you are too far away you cannot marvel at the great detail they have. It’s at the right distance when you can truly see amazing artistry. To sum up the achievements of our students in one night during a two hour block is near impossible, but we did it. My hope is to hear and see great things in the future from those honored on nights like this. Until next year.
Thank you
CAA Team for an outstanding and thoroughly enjoyable showcase. You and your students are AMAZING!! The talent, poise, and professionalism exhibited by your students is so impressive. Your advisory group was impressed as well. Please congratulate your students on a “job well done” and Good Luck, Seniors! Go Titans!! Pam Peralta General Director of Career, Technical, and Adult Education April-May2011
Both Takara Williams and Girard Anthony received $250 dollars each in scholarship funds to be put towards their college education from the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s department. Takara will be attending Florida International University and Girard will be going to the University of Central Florida. Each of the students had to submit an essay and a poster design promoting antisexting and cyber bullying.
