What you might have missed this summer by Tyler Harrison Wood Junior CA Academy

n the early humid morning of August 9th, 2011 many future and present enrollees in the Commercial Art Academy rose from their summer slumbers to attend the first ever Commercial Art “Summerzkool.” Upon first blush the name of the program itself was intriguing, promising not much more than a summer workshop and meet-

ing new people, but in the end the experience was a fantastic way to make the new academy members feel comfortable and at home in our “Commercial Art Family.” The first morning started off at a nice summer’s pace as we patiently waited for more and more newcomers to arrive. As soon as we thought that everyone was present we immediately jumped into games in order to get to know one another, ending with people

bingo and group sorting. Once the three groups were formed we all had to agree upon a group name, with one catch they must be named after type faces and after much debate the groups Helvetica, Courier, and Futura were formed. The groups then were informed that they must make up a tagline for their group and decorate a board that would be “judged” and by the end of the workshop a winner would be cho-

sen. Among the chaos of the groupʼs creations and exploring the grounds of the school, we had many guest speakers join us such as: CJ Wetzler, Dorian Angelo, and Nicole White. Every speaker that came to us presented positive and inspiring messages about achieving goals and creating our ideal future, most of which related back to the academy. CJ Wetzler, a motivational youth speaker, delivered energetic and meaningful messages to us everyday of the workshop, many of which related back to his life which he completely changed in order to get a chance to change the lives of others. He spoke wildly of his aspirations to become a pilot at a young age and how he got his pilotʼs license at 14, but shed his wings at 27 to become a youth speaker and spread

his message of audacious and intentional living across the country. Dorian Angelo, a professor at Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota, Fl, came to talk about not only the school at which he teaches but other options for artists with “smaller wallets.” He really drilled into our heads the rigidity of Ringlingʼs programs and how serious they truly are, “It is very rare that I go to one of the computer labs at nights and find no one asleep at a computer.” Dorian is also a part of our advisory board, so he is a big part of our “Commercial Art” family. Nicole White, a professional photographer, blew us all away with her presentation of dynamic and eye-catching photography and also gave us many tips for achieving a bright artistic future, sharing with us what she

had learned over the years. Recent Commercial Art graduates, Colleen Drennan and Gabrielle LeGendre, also joined us and spoke about their experiences in the academy and how it created such a large impact on their lives. The summer workshop definitely was a great success, not only in welcoming our new academy members but also in opening their eyes and exposing them to the fantastic futures that await them in the coming years. Cherise Clarke President Florida SkillsUSA SkillsUSA Executive Director Tim Lawrence was not exaggerating when he said the Washington Leadership Training Institute is the premiere leadership experience of the year, it truly was unlike anything I’ve ever been apart of! Along with training sessions in public speaking, advocacy and civics by SkillsUSA’s national staff and past national officers, we met tons of huge SkillsUSA industry supporters like Manufacturing Institute, State Farm, SnapOn Industrial and Irwin Tools and never ceased to thank them for their support. I was able to - for the first time - tour Washington D.C. and its many, many monuments and take in the atmosphere of the nationals capitol. We visited and paid our respects to multiple war memorials and attended a ceremony for the laying of a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington Cemetery, and had the opportunity to speak with our local Senate and House representatives about how Career & Technical Education is benefitOctober-November2011

ing us and our local communities! I honestly had too many grand experiences to count! One notable highlight was visiting the SkillsUSA National Leadership Headquarters. Walking along the grounds that many great and wonderfully skilled people have walked before us was thrilling, and seeing where the hard work for our national conferences and leadership programs grows out of was really awesome to see. Spending the evening there was complete with a bar-be-que and games of volleyball, horseshoe and frisbee with teens and young adults representing every state; it really did feel like a second home. My WLTI experience is one that is still going on - networking and reminiscing with my fellow state officers and friends from all over the nation. We’ve joined a group of great students - leaders - ready and willing to take America’s workforce by storm. With the training and experiences from WLTI behind me, I say, “BRING IT ON!”

Summer Internships

Ciara Curry This summer I completed an internship at Printing in a Box, an ad/ print company located off Westshore on Ward St. Just as I would for an actual job in the field, I was called in for an interview where they questioned me about my experience and general knowledge, and took a look at my portfolio, consisting entirely of pieces created in the Commercial Art Academy. I was hired almost immediately, and my hours were Monday through Friday from 10am to 4pm. Over the course of the internship I realized that the knowledge of the field and programs I gained in Commercial Art and the leadership and career skills I gained in SkillsUSA left me perfectly equipped for the job, as the employees were thoroughly impressed with my work.

Angela Don also experienced

an paid internship this summer. Angela spent two days a week doing specialty imprints and silk screening and graphic design for Fly by night T-shirts located in Tampa. “This experience was fantastic, I learned so much about different aspects of T-shirt printing & design. Many things come into thought when designing a shirt such as color overlay, number of colors and dimensions. I hope that many students can have such an experience like this on I had at Fly by Night. 5th

The Annual Career & College Fest Entertainment Hall, Florida State Fairgrounds, Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2011. The 5th Annual Career & College Fest is sponsored by Hillsborough County Public Schools & Hillsborough Education Foundation. Students can discover their career pathway, from middle to high to postsecondary programs, schools, industry certifications and more. Our CA program as well as many other CTE programs were presented at this incredible event, educating the county’s middle and high school students and their parents about potential career paths. Students were transported to the event during the day and encouraged to return with their families after school.

“This event made me think more about what I’m going to be.” Roxana, Jefferson High School Sponsorships for the event are critical to the success of this event, as the monies raised pay for the costs to hold a county-wide event that middle and high school students are invited to attend. The energy and resources spent on this event will ensure the students and their parents can make informed decisions about their future pathways to successful careers. October-November2011

Our volunteer students spent most of their day on their feet as thousands of students toured the event.
