Pediatricians and parents today have become much more aware of the nature and available treatment for vascular birthmarks and are recognizing that evaluation by a Vascular Birthmarks Team can be crucial. Birthmarks are generally grouped into two types: „Hemangiomas are strawberry red marks made up of tiny blood vessels that become visible within the first few weeks of life and may grow quite rapidly for the first several months of life. Gradually they lose their red color and shrink, a term called “involution, which may take place over the
next several years. Hemangiomas need treatment if they interfere with vital functions such as vision, feeding and breathing, if they ulcerate with bleeding or severe pain, or if after involution they are apt to leave behind significant cosmetic defects. „ Malformations can be made up of any type of vessels in the body. They are generally present at birth and grow slowly over time. Common examples are port wine stains, venous malformations, and lymphatic malformations. Angel’s kisses or stork bites on the forehead or back of the neck at birth are in the port wine stain family but fade over time. While the vast majority of birthmarks are harmless and do not require treatment, if your child has a
birthmark on the eyelids, nose, lips, or another sensitive area, or if the birthmark is growing and causing deformity, you should consult your pediatrician. There are now a variety of treatments available to reduce or eliminate birthmarks, including medications to arrest growth and shrink mass, laser therapies to lighten the color, and surgery to remove the birthmark itself. Treatments involve a number of specialties including pediatric dermatologists, pediatric plastic surgeons and pediatric otolaryngologists. At the CHKD Center for Hemangiomas and Vascular Birthmarks, patients are seen by a team of representatives from all of these specialties to ensure that the right diagnosis is made and that all treatment options are considered. You can get more information about birthmarks and vascular anomalies at www.chkd.org or by calling the Center for Hemangiomas and Vascular Birthmarks at 668-9850.

I always put my children and my grandkids to sleep on their tummies.
The baby’s shoes are much too tight. You’ll spoil that child.
Let him cry it out. If you feed the baby fruit first, he’ll never eat vegetables. Don’t bother with nursing. Formula is just as good.
Let her sleep through the night.
