Research does show that eating disorders can resurface later in life. According to a study published in a recent issue of the Journal of the American Dietetic Association, unhealthy eating patterns experienced in childhood or early adulthood may resurface and intensify with age. Hardships, trauma and unpleasant life experience can trigger the problems. Failed marriages, job stress, empty nests and other mid-life experiences can make disorders resurface, as women attempt to control at least some part of their lives. Because older women may not seek treatment, or may go unno-

ticed by medical professionals, it’s important for women to recognize the symptoms of eating disorders and to seek professional help should they suspect that they or a friend might be suffering with a problem. Psychological issues can include low self-esteem and self-worth, body loathing, worrisome or high anxiety levels and an overall bad self-image. Other factors that can contribute to eating disorders can include abuse, grief or loss. For more information on preventing or treating eating disorders, contact the National Eating Disorders Association, www. edap.org.

recipe: puffy pizza pocket

Here are some suggestions: the lunchbox

super sides

Generally, a soft-sided lunchbag is easier to pack, carry and keep up with than a traditional hard lunchbox; these are insulated, and are easy to clean

+HUH DUH VRPH LGHDV IRU VXSHU VLGH GLVKHV WR WRVV LQ WKH OXQFK ER[

Look for lunchbags with external pockets for small items and a clip to attach to a backpack

Lunchbags should close easily, and stay closed Lunchbags should be easy to open, as well as easy to pack and unpack Lunch bags should be spill resistant Read information provided by insulated lunchbag manufacturer to see how long safe temperatures will be maintained — the longer, the better — even so, you will most likely want to use frozen gel packs If using a soft-sided lunchbag, pack items inside in sturdy containers to prevent squishing; consider hard plastic reusable containers that can be washed out at home over ziptop bags

Plan lunches ahead, and then give yourself an additional 10 minutes in the morning to prep lunches to avoid being rushed; let kids help in the planning and preparation Perishable items can be prepared the night before; just store in your home refrigerator until packing the next day

Melon cubes

Baby carrots or carrot sticks

Sugar snap peas

Cucumber coins

Look for good sources of protein, like hard cheese, hard-boiled egg, hummus, turkey, tuna or — if allowed at the school — peanut butter Pack warmed up, leftover noodles and sauce, soup, and the like in an insulated bottled Make a smoothie and send in an insulated bottle Whole grain muffins feed a sweet tooth more healthfully than a candy bar

A few cubes of a hard cheese, like cheddar

Box of raisins

Individual applesauce container

Whole-grain chips and salsa

Cereal bar

Peanut butter and crackers

Air-popped pop corn

the lunch, packed

Avoid foods that require a lot of fuss or end up being very messy Lunches should have a minimum number of perishable items

Small tangerines, apples, bananas and other fruit

the lunch

Toasted whole-wheat raisin bread cut into “fingers”

Pack condiments and wet items separate from bread and items that can become soggy for quick assembly at lunch Pack items in sturdy, reusable containers A frozen gel pack should be packed with perishable items to help keep those cold until lunchtime Hot foods and cold foods can be kept in an insulated bottle Prep insulated bottles by running very hot or very cold water in them, then drain, before putting hot or cold food If refrigeration is not available, lunchboxes should be stored in a cool, dark place n away from sunlight and heat sources Perishable leftovers should be discarded after lunch

This recipe keeps well in a lunchbox and tastes great at room temperature. Flaky biscuit dough combines with classic pizza flavors for a delicious lunch entrée. Turkey pepperoni keeps the pizza lower fat; substitute with chopped vegetables like broccoli and eggplant if you wish.

Directions Preheat oven to 350F. Press each biscuit flat approximately into a five-inch round. Spread on a little tomato sauce, sprinkle on some cheese, place on top some pepperoni and add a couple of dashes of spices. Be careful not to overfill the pockets or contents will leak out. Fold the biscuits over into a half-moon shape, crimp closed and place, evenly spaced, on an aluminum foil-lined baking sheet. Bake until golden, about 20 and 25 minutes, remove and cool. Yields six pockets.

let’s talk

My 12-year-old isn’t allowed to trick-or-treat anymore in our neighborhood, but he’s very excited about Halloween. What can I do to include him while his younger siblings go door to door? Be a Buddy It is wonderful that he is still excited about Halloween. It would be a great idea to have your older child dress up and walk around the neighborhood with his younger siblings. Then when they return home, the children could incorporate a math lesson into the event by dividing the candy equally amongst them. Donzaleigh Douglas Guidance Director Warwick High School Newport News Public Schools

Be a Leader Even as we grow up, there’s no reason Halloween can’t still be tons of fun - there are plenty of adults who enjoy Halloween just as much as children! Now that your son is twelve, engage him in Halloween events in a more “grown-up” role. This is a great opportunity for him to be a leader with his younger siblings by helping to select or design costumes, painting faces, etc. He could also be allowed to create his own Halloween costume, develop decorations for your doorstep, and be the “candy distributor” at your home with another adult while his younger siblings trick-or-treat. Then you can all share scary stories at the end of the evening. Arlene Armentor

Vice President of Marketing and Resource Development Boys and Girls Club Newport News

Have a Party I would not allow either kid to trick or treat, door to door. I would get them involved in a Halloween party at church or at a Boys & Girls Club. They would have more fun, and not be subjected to the potential dangers involved with door to door in the neighborhood. However, if a parent felt comfortable going trick or treating in their neighborhood, I would explain to the 12 year old that there are some things in life that are available to us only at certain ages. Explain that for most things we have to wait until we are “old enough”, but there are some things that society has judged to end when we reach a certain age - trick or treating being one of them. He can still take part by going with mom and the younger sibling as they walk house to house, he just will not be able to carry a bag for treats, as that is reserved for the kids under 12 years old. Jerry Gammon Senior Vice President of Human Resources and Administration Boys and Girls Club Newport News

Next month’s question My 10-year-old’s friend has several expensive electronic gadgets, but our daughter only has one. We can’t afford to purchase all the latest toys, and we don’t think she needs them. How can we help her understand and handle the peer pressure she’s been experiencing? If you have a parenting question of your own, or if you’d like to answer a question already asked, send your questions or responses to Jennifer O’Donnell, editor, at jenny. odonnell@pilotonline.com.

I load a lot of pressure on Aidan, our 2nd grader, which his younger brother probably won’t have to face. Plus, there’s also the fact that Aidan pays for the mistakes I’ve made trying to be a parent to him while Kyle gets the “new and improvedâ€? dad who has now figured out how to do things right - sometimes. I realized this not during a parenting epiphany where the heavens parted and a chorus of angels sang an acappella version of “Cat’s in the Cradle,â€? but during one of Aidan’s recent flag football practices. It’s Aidan’s first time playing football on any level and he’s been climbing a steep learning curve. He’s having fun, but since most of the other boys are older and have played before he often feels like he’s the worst player on the team. He’s not, but since he’s mostly played soccer and basketball Aidan is more used to a game that is

constantly moving. The constant setting and resetting in football are an adjustment. But what I noticed during a recent practice is that the boys on the team who have older brothers are always better than their peers. They’ve thrown the ball around with their older brothers, watched them play games and probably gotten advice from them. It’s a perk that Aidan doesn’t have access to, but that his 3-year-old brother will. I won’t be surprised if Kyle turns out to be a better athlete than Aidan simply because he has an older brother to show him the way. If Kyle goes on to become a billionaire athlete he’d better buy his older brother a house or something just to say thanks. So, as the first born, Aidan not only gets all the grief of two parents fumbling their way towards raising a successful child, he doesn’t get the benefit of having an older sibling to also

help teach him the ways of the world and the gridiron. I’m also well aware there are plenty of benefits to being the older sibling, but right now they mostly consist of Aidan being able to sit on his smaller brother. Aidan is going to be fine if he never leads the Green Bay Packers to a Super Bowl victory. His attitude when he plays sports is contagious and it frustrates me that he can be smiling all the way through football practice even though he’s more interested in showing off his mouth guard or that he just missed two easy tackles because he thought his arms could extend like Reed Richards from the Fantastic Four. What this epiphany about Aidan needing an older brother made me realize is that part of being a dad is also being that older brother to a first born child. While it’s important to not give up the necessary parts of being a parent such as making sure my kids don’t turn into nose-pickers and that it’s never a good idea to play with fire, it’s important to do the boy stuff, too. I need to make sure Aidan gets to capture frogs and get so muddy that he needs to be hosed off in the backyard. Just don’t tell his mother. Parents know they have to wear many hats. I need to drag my “Big Brother hat out of the closet occasionally to let Aidan experience what it’s like not to be the oldest child. I expect that he’ll probably enjoy it for a time, but then want to wear his own “Big Brother hat again. It fits him well.

Directions An adult should preheat the oven to 350F. Kids can measure out butter and sugar and add them to a large mixing bowl. Kids mix together until blended, then adults can add eggs and the vanilla measured out by kids, and kids can mix. Kids can measure out the applesauce and stir in, then measure out the flour, baking soda, cinnamon and allspice and stir in. If desired, chopped apple and/or raisins or dried cranberries can be added; toss first in the optional allpurpose flour - this will help keep them from sinking to the bottom of the muffins when baked. Adults can lightly spray with cooking spray, or grease, muffin tins and kids can fill about threefourths of the way full carefully using a spoon. Adults can place the muffin tins in the oven and bake for about 20 or 25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in a muffin comes out clean. Adults should remove the muffins from the oven, cool for about five minutes, then remove from pans to further cool on wire racks.
