Music School Starts New Preschool Music Classes

Quality Music Center expands lesson programs and adds Preschool Music Younger Children Benefit From Small Class sizes and Individual Attention By Paislee Winkler “One, Two””One, Two.”Can be heard as students of Music Funtime are marching in time to half notes while playing rhythm sticks, tambourines, and maracas. It’s a parade of instruments and children. Music FunTime is a new music program provided by Quality Music Center. This program is for children 18 months to 5 years of age and introduces them to music through the use of crafts, worksheets and games. The children will learn to read music in the same manner children are taught letters, numbers, colors, shapes, etc. The class offers an array of colorful music teaching tools that teach rhythm, pitch, notation, symbols and key signatures. Instructor Muffy Hoover says, “Teaching Music FunTime is the best part of my day. The children are always so excited when they get to class and we have so much fun!” Classes are available both in the morning and afternoon to accommodate busy family schedules, classes are grouped by age and kept small to allow individual attention so the focus is on the music. “The key to the success is the magical connection between music and math,” states Muffy as she presents the curriculum based on a study from Johns Hopkins University. The research acknowledges by using both the right (music) and left (math) sides of the brain at an early age you can increase its capacity. If it is not tapped into by age six you could lose potential growth. Parents and family are encouraged to sit in class and participate. Whether they are singing a song, helping with crafts or playing an instrument. Parents play a vital roll in the classrooms atmosphere. Each week the children leave with homework assignments to reinforce what they learned.

Muffy Hoover shares that, Quality Music is a family business. “Music is a part of my family and I like that this program brings families together. It’s exciting when a mom tells me she is learning too, I love that.” “Students learn more than just music, also socializing and sharing with others. “My daughter is learning to respect others and take turns on instruments like the drum set,” says Laura Logan mother of Lily. Lily while playing the tambourine, says “I love the whole note it’s four counts long”. Classes are taught at both Quality Music Center locations. Each level is eight weeks long. The curriculum is written as a continuance so once one level is completed the next begins.

Once the child graduates from the Music FunTime program they are ready for private lessons. Quality Music Center offers private music lessons for Guitar, Piano, Voice, Drums, Violin, Viola, Cello, Woodwind and Brass Instruments as well as folk instruments such as banjo, dulcimer, mandolin, uke, and more. For more information contact Quality Music Center Ltd. at 757-416-1228 for the Virginia Beach Location or 757-547-1231 for the Chesapeake Location, or visit them at www.qualitymusiccenter.com for helpful information on getting started in music lessons today.

For all of them, school can be an anxiety-ridden place unless they can learn to relax and keep moments that seem overwhelming in perspective. “To a child, something like a big test may feel like life and death, but of

course it’s really not, says Scott, now director for the Huntington Learning Center in Virginia Beach. “That’s where a parent’s attitude goes a long way. Treat these things as important but not so critical that it will impact the rest of their lives if they mess up. There’s always another test around the corner, another chance to do better. For all types of anxiety, deep breath-

some strategies to help lower anxiety ing - a technique used often in adults - can help a child settle down, says Stella Quinn, principal of Riverside Academy in Hampton, a school for teenagers in treatment at the Riverside Behavioral Health Center. The basic method: breathe through the nose to inflate and slowly deflate the belly like a balloon, rather than taking rapid chest breaths that can raise blood pressure and tense muscles. “When we’re anxious, we naturally shorten our breath,” Quinn says. “If kids can practice that deeper breathing in advance, they will have a powerful tool anytime they need it. It could be just before a test or a presentation, or something to use if they start to panic in the middle of it.” Positive self-talk is another simple strategy, adds Sam Fabian, a parent educator at The Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters. Students can tell themselves, “I know I can do this,” or “I can handle this, even if it’s hard” the same messages they should hear from a parent at home. “You want to recognize and validate children’s fears as something real, regardless of what we might think as adults,” Fabian says. “If you say to them, ‘Oh come on, it’s not a big deal’ or ‘you’re being silly,’ that only makes the anxiety worse. They’re not trying to be difficult. They really do need a calm adult to help talk them through it.” While some students are simply wired to fret, most develop test anxiety because of a negative past experience: feeling awful about a poor score, getting a very critical reaction from a parent or teacher or feeling singled out, Scott says.

Deep breathing Positive self-talk Celebrate successes Prepare your child for exams in advance Take small steps

To move past those emotions, students need reassurance that they only need to do their best, not know every answer or get a perfect grade. Parents can celebrate both effort and small successes or, if a child is struggling, point him toward the next test with needed extra help (that’s assuming the child has tried hard to do well; slackers are another subject). Preparing for exams well in advance - not cramming the night before - can cut way down on anxiety. So can getting enough sleep, making time for exercise and finding out details about each test in advance. “Find out if it will be timed, exactly what content it will cover and the type of questions it will have,” Scott says. “Alleviate some of the unknown.” On test day, kids should answer the easy questions first to build confidence, she adds. Labeling a child as a poor test taker overall is harmful because, in reality, most students struggle only with certain subjects or exam formats. “It’s much better to have the attitude that some tests are tough, versus all tests are tough,” Scott says. Asking anxious students to predict how they scored after a test is another bad idea, she says:

“If the child feels he did well but then actually does poorly, it’s like a double whammy to his confidence.” Before an oral presentation, practicing alone in front of a mirror can ease self-doubt, Quinn says. “You’re seeing yourself as others see you,” she says. “Maybe you’re moving your hands a lot and you didn’t know it. It can get rid of the ‘I’m going to look so stupid’ fear.” Fabian agrees: “Take baby steps. Do a speech alone in your room, or with only a cat or a dog or a stuffed animal there. Then bring in one other person, or maybe a small group.” Baby steps can lower anxiety around other kids, too, she says. A student could start by picking one friend to invite over for a short play date and expand from there. If teachers are aware a child is feeling uneasy, they can assist in stressful situations such as finding a seat at lunch and point the child to in-school social skills groups. A younger child also might like to carry a comfort item such as a stuffed animal in her backpack. If anxiety is persistent and interferes with a child’s ability to tackle normal daily activities, parents should seek outside advice; the family pediatrician and school counselor are good places to start. Otherwise, kids should know that feeling nervous is normal and even can be beneficial: after all, the best athletes, actors and public speakers use that energy to push themselves to perform better. “Someone may have run onto a field or gotten up on a stage hundreds of times before, but they still feel those butterflies,” Scott says. “As long as it’s not overwhelming, that’s just fine.”

What you need to do While steak or chicken is grilling, kids can measure out olive oil and pour in a sautĂŠ pan or wok. Kids can also wash and pat dry the vegetables. An adult should cut the vegetables into small, thin pieces. An adult should place the sautĂŠ pan on the stovetop and heat the oil on high. Care should be given to sautĂŠ harder vegetables first, like broccoli and peppers. An adult should carefully add the vegetables to the oil, careful not to overcrowd the pan, and stir to evenly coat with oil and cook. An adult should remove the vegetables to a paper towel-lined baking sheet. Kids can sprinkle salt and pepper evenly over the vegetables. When steak or chicken has finished grilling, remove to a cutting board and allow to rest until ready to slice

thin. Resting will allow the juices to set. Slice just before ready to assemble the sandwich. An adult should slice a baguette down the center; kids can open the loaf up and gently remove just a bit of the bread from inside the top. Kids can add a layer of cheese along the bottom part of the opened loaf. An adult should add the vegetables on top of the cheese, and then the meat on top of the vegetables. Kids can fold the top over to close the sandwich, and an adult can cut into quarters. Yields 4 sliders

This escape comes under the guise of “Girl’s Night,” and it seems to be happening more and more frequently as the boys get older. My wife feels like she needs to get out of the house so she can spend time talking with other women. Apparently, a 3-year-old boy, 7-year-old boy and her husband don’t talk about enough girly stuff. Which I don’t understand, because we always make a point to mention female superheroes like Storm and the Invisible Woman whenever the conversation allows. But that’s not enough for this stay-at-home mom; she needs a bit more female adult downloading than we can ever provide for her. While this creates more work for me on the nights she goes out I think all three of us with both the X and Y chromosomes look forward to the nights when the house is ours. “Boys’ night!” becomes a rallying cry as my wife bolts out the door faster than a speeding bullet without committing to whether she will ever return. Suddenly the main barrier to sharing bodily gasses as loudly as possible has left the building and the incessant caveman/ caveboy grunting begins. But strangely enough, the routine for “Boys’ Night” isn’t all the different than when my wife is around. She usually still prepares dinner for us before she leaves, and after dinner the boys still have to put on their pajamas and brush their teeth. Then there is reading time and I tell them a story before tucking them into bed. But even though the formula isn’t drastically different, the dynamic certainly is. I’m not nearly as concerned if 7-year-old Aidan and 3-year-old Kyle start wrestling, as long as I’m in the room to referee. I know they’ll both eventually turn on me and I’ll just start tickling them until both give up in fits of laughter. If my wife were home the wrestling would last .335 seconds before we would hear, “You know I don’t like that wrestling!” from across the house. We also feel free to talk about superheroes, Star Wars, LEGOs and video games without fear of annoying my wife with the conversation topic.

The boys and I always have a good time when my wife is out for the evening, but that’s because it’s the exception, not the rule.

I tell stories that involve things like zombies and werewolves without the disapproving “You’ll give them nightmares! look I’ll get if I try that when she’s home. We talk about the sports we like even if Kyle is more interested in finding out if the New York Giants are relatives of the San Francisco Giants. It’s not better when she’s gone, just different. The sane and logical woman who grew up with a sister as her only sibling and doesn’t quite understand how boys tick has left and that leads to a change that comes from one parent being out of the equation temporarily. I imagine the bed-time routine when I’m working late or refereeing a high school soccer game is much different for the three of them. They probably sing campfire songs and knit mittens or something like that. My wife always looks extra tired on those nights and I assume there is a lot of calisthenics going on, too. The boys and I always have a good time when my wife is out for the evening, but that’s because it’s the exception, not the rule. I appreciate single parents even more when I remember that I’m only putting two energetic boys to bed by myself every once in a while, and they do it every day. Sure, I probably let the boys get away with a little more when my wife is away and I likely get some “Dad is cool points for that, but we’re all better off when my wife is around to keep us out of trouble. If only she would let me tell more bedtime stories about zombies.
