High five

Peace out

Green mixed with other bright colors - and especially those dots! - nearly get me excited about picking up dirty junk in my attic and muddy leaves outside. $1 at Dollar Tree, Wards Corner, Norfolk.

This one is for my pre-teen princess only, who has to look good even when she’s busy doing chores at home. $20 at Kohl’s, Sam Drive, Chesapeake.

“G

OING GREEN - and Clean” is my motto this spring, and I need my tween daughter’s help to make it happen. So I bribed her with cute clothes,

accessories and supplies. Here’s what we discovered together

keeping with our green theme; I plan on having just as much cleaning as we did shopping!

Clean sweep Let’s hope this “neon” blue and green dust pan will make being “on knee” scrubbing floors and digging gardens feel at least a little bit cool! $8.99 at Walmarts throughout Hampton Roads. ZZZ 0\7LGHZDWHU0RPV FRP _ $ 3 5 , / _

choosing a party planner or entertainer Before choosing a party planner or entertainer, first ask friends and relatives if there is someone they have used. Check online listings or parenting magazines. Party retail centers may also have a list to draw from; ask for referrals. Once you have a few names, call the establishment and ask the following questions: „ What services do you offer? „ What ages to you typically cater to? „ How much do you charge? „ Can the party be tailored to a particular theme? „ What exactly do you take care of (games, activities, refreshments, cake, invitations, decorations, party favors)? „ What am I expected to do? „ Finally, ask for references. Can the party planner or entertainer give you several names of people who have used their services recently and been pleased with the service?

A FREE lecture series on children’s health and wellness

Putting Autism in Perspective Teaching, raising or relating to a child with autism requires changing the way you think, perceive and communicate. Award-winning author Ellen Notbohm, mother of two sons on the spectrum, will offer guideposts for facing a child’s autism with a healthy and productive outlook, and share a child’s-eye look at the primary characteristics of autism embodied in her book, Ten Things Every Child with Autism Wishes You Knew.

Wednesday, April 25, 6:30-8:30 p.m. (Parent Program) Princess Anne High School Auditorium 4400 Virginia Beach Blvd., Virginia Beach

Parent View, Child View: Putting Autism in Perspective Learn from Ellen Notbohm how to gain a parent’s perspective on the multi-disciplinary network of therapeutic, educational and social services that parents must identify, locate and manage on behalf of their child with autism; and learn how clinicians and educators can provide perspective and emotional support to parents of children with autism.

Thursday, April 26, 9:30-11:30 a.m. (Professional Program) Virginia Beach Central Library Auditorium 4100 Virginia Beach Blvd., Virginia Beach

Adults should preheat oven to 325F. In saucepan, an adult should melt butter and add cocoa, stirring to mix, then remove from heat. Kids can add sugar and eggs to a mixing bowl, stirring together, and pour into saucepan. Kids can add flour, vanilla and baking powder and stir to mix well. Kids can place paper muffin tin liners in pan and, using a spoon, fill each liner mostly to the top. Adults can place the filled muffin tin into the oven and bake about 30 minutes; brownies are done when a toothpick inserted in the middle of one of the muffins comes out clean. Adults should remove the brownies, pour a little mint extract in a bowl, and, while brownies are still warm, brush tops with extract using a pastry brush. Brownies should cool before icing. For icing, kids can drizzle mint extract into prepared butter cream frosting and stir. Kids can add enough green food coloring to their liking and stir to mix well. Kids can use a spoon to put a dollop of icing on top of each brownie and add sliver almonds to mimic wings and miniature chocolate chips to mimic eyes.

It’s a whole new ball game out there. T

oday’s kids do more than play sports. They work at sports, training hard yearround to gain a competitive edge. But putting in extra hours does more than fine-tune kids’ skills. It also puts them at increased risk of injury. Fortunately, Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters – the name parents trust most for their children’s health care – offers a sports medicine program just for young athletes. We provide a complete spectrum of services, from sports-specific training to diagnosis to surgery to rehab, for athletes of every size, shape, age and ability. Next time your child or teen needs medical help for a sports condition, call 668-PLAY. We have the region’s only experts dedicated exclusively to young athletes at locations in Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake and Newport News.
