DAVID JOYNT Senior Pastor

This Annual Report is like what the State of the Union was originally meant to be. Did you know the State of the Union speech was intended to be a moment of unity and accountability? Legislators and Justices gathering to hear the President review the previous year and highlight the coming one. Over time, however, it has evolved into an exercise in self-congratulation, a piece of partisan political theater.

The 2024 Annual Report aims to capture the truth of God’s work in all areas of our life together, in order to glorify the One we love and serve. Our unity is built not on political alliances but on our common faith and unity of mission.

I am deeply grateful for 2024. Grateful for talented colleagues on our team and their inspiring work. Grateful for 11 straight years in the black due to the generosity and faithfulness of our precious members. Grateful for Travis Kingma, to whom we bid farewell, for his service as a worship leader and next generation leader. We feel the impact of his efforts in the interns who became disciples under his care. I am grateful for Kay Randolph, stepping in to lead the Chancel Choir while Jennifer Hamm is on leave. I am grateful for our Safety Team's efforts to make our spaces and events more secure. And I am so very grateful our campus welcomed more visitors than ever before at services and at Awaken Café.

For every reason to be grateful for 2024 there are just as many reasons for excitement in 2025. This year we will live into our new identity within ECO, a denomination led by its churches. We will launch new initiatives in Congregational Care, Discipleship, Outreach, and Mission. As you read this report, I pray you find your own reasons for gratitude and excitement. May 2025 be a very special year for you and for the VPC community.

DAVID TURNER

Ministry has its rewards. Seeing people grow in those teachable moments of life—whether it be at a wedding or a memorial service—is inspiring. Spending time at the bedside of someone you love and listening to their story as life slips away, or gathering with a group of people seeking God’s presence in prayer—in those moments you feel the presence and power of the Holy Spirit. These experiences and many others are opportunities to discover “God sightings” if only we step out beyond our comfort in obedience to God’s gentle nudges in our life.

Amid those amazing ministry moments where you’re so grateful that God has called you to serve as a Pastor there are also challenging and discouraging moments we usually don’t highlight in ministry reports. In this past year, I had my share of both the highs and lows of ministry, but the lows have been unusual. In 2024 the Deacons dealt with six resignations: four for health reasons, one for personal reasons, and another due to an unexpected death. Losing these six dedicated servants may not sound like a lot, but the reality of ministry is that every person is valuable; every person has a role and a place in the building of God’s kingdom. When one person is missing or one person is not living into their calling in ministry—the ministry suffers and the kingdom building is diminished in its effectiveness.

As you read through this report, know that the Congregational Care Ministry's success is because of the dedicated volunteers, Deacons, and Elders. They give beyond what is asked with their time, talents, and treasures—often without recognition.

I tell you the truth, whatever you did for the least of these, you did for me.

-Matthew 25:40

CHRIS WOODARD

Outreach

I have reached a new level of dad joy: Lego. It is so fun to wake up early with my four year old, sip on a cup of coffee and watch him engage with Lego. He uses his tiny hands, a book of instructions and brick by brick is able to make something quite impressive. Okay, truth be told, he is only at the tiny car phase of building, but I think it is impressive.

Watching Max play with Lego reminds me of our church community. We Jesus followers are individually adding our bricks. We are faithfully following a book of instruction that is God’s Holy Word. As our bricks are being built up in community the Church comes to life.

As I look back on this past year, I am so thankful for you, the people of VPC. The way you care for and encourage each other, the way you step outside of yourself to serve your neighbor, and the way you express your faith in worship is simply impressive. Sometimes we can only see our brick, but I know with confidence, that our heavenly father is watching over us, looking over at what our church creates and calls it good.

VPC, I am excited to see what God builds in our community in 2025 and thank you for adding your brick.

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.
