big welcome to you all, to the Sunshine Coast and Queensland’s favourite beachside music event, the Caloundra Music Festival. This is our seventh music festival, with a star-studded list of artists from here and overseas, and is designed to suit the widest-possible audience. The 2013 Caloundra Music Festival is one day longer – four days – than its predecessors, and celebrates the best of Australia’s musical culture along with some of the finest music from around the world. We hope you enjoy your stay here in this very special part of the nation, and may I personally thank in advance all the people – artists, organisers, volunteers, local businesses and the Caloundra community – who are bringing this remarkable festival to you all. Have a great festival!

elcome to the Caloundra Music Festival – another great Sunshine Coast experience on Queensland’s dynamic and growing events calendar. The Newman Government is proud to support this event through Tourism and Events Queensland, recognising the importance of events tourism in driving visitation to Queensland’s regional areas. Events like this are not only a great source of community pride, they also bring social and economic benefits to the host community. Tourism is one of the largest contributors to the State’s economy and through a genuine whole-of-government approach, supporting events in Caloundra will help us achieve our goal to double annual overnight visitor expenditure from $15 billion to $30 billion by 2020. The Caloundra Music Festival is supported through Tourism and Events Queensland’s Regional Development Program, which assists communities throughout the state. Since 2001, this program has invested more than $22 million across 1,015 events. I would like to thank the local community, volunteers and event organisers for their terrific efforts in delivering another great event for Queensland and the Sunshine Coast region.

Director’s Welcome

Community Welcome

he CMF team are very proud to present yet another stellar line-up of Australian and international performers. A special welcome this year goes to our international guests – The Al McKay Allstars (US), The Baseballs (Germany) and The Sierra Leone Refugee Allstars, all playing exclusive Australian shows in Caloundra. Other international acts on the bill include Ivan Neville’s “Dumpstaphunk”, The Holmes Brothers, Donavon Frankenreiter, Common Kings, Nahko and Medicine for the People and Toni Childs, all from the US, along with Katchafire (NZ) and Quique Neira (Chili). And of course we’re all super excited about seeing our Australian headliners like Boy and Bear, Xavier Rudd, Eskimo Joe, The Screaming Jets and a host of others, as well as some great homegrown Sunshine Coast acts.

T

People love CMF due to our great beachside location, the diversity of music and the happy, family-friendly vibe. One of the things that sets CMF apart is the fact that it is held in the beautiful tourism precinct of Kings Beach. This means people can leave the festival site to visit local restaurants and shops, and easily walk to the event from local accommodation houses. This is the major reason CMF is seen to be such a boon for the local economy.

On behalf of the community, we acknowledge the traditional owners and thank all Custodians of Kalowendah Country for their ongoing patience and generous contributions to our lives.

T

In 2013 we are looking to broaden our appeal by including other music genres and a wider array of cultural activities such as dance, art, film, crafts, food, wine, produce and sports, all to be featured as part of the second Caloundra Fringe Festival. We are excited to be partnering with Kim McCosker and her 4 Ingredients team to deliver our first food and wine component of the festival, which will be held on Monday October 7th in Lions Park. We also welcome local restaurant 4551 to the fold, providing a slightly more refined festival dining experience. We encourage you to book in for a great feed enjoying one of the best views in the house. The CMF will conclude Monday afternoon with some old festival favourites (Braithwaite, Camilleri, Reyne and Wilson) all coming together for a great 90-minute show. Once again, a big thank you to our sponsors, community organisations and all the wonderful volunteers who work tirelessly to bring you such a great weekend. As usual, we encourage you to send in your feedback, good and bad, to assist us in improving next year’s event. We hope you all have a great time and get yourselves another skin full of ‘Sun, Surf and Soul’. Richie Eyles On behalf of the CMF Management Team.

he entire Caloundra community have a deep appreciation and respect for all Custodians of Country: its interconnected land, waterways, Peoples and all living things, including you. They teach us that ‘Kalowendah’/Caloundra means both ‘White Beech Trees’ as well as ‘beautiful living things’. We’re all working together, far more than we ever have and we’re beginning to respect the complexity of the connections here that make it so beautiful. A beech tree can take two centuries to reach full maturity. Our community is not there yet. Thanks to Custodians and Kabbarli HACC, you’ll be joining us as we learn for the first time about celebrating Neurungun across the entire festival program and Kalowendah.

Greening our festival BYO BOTTLE CAMPAIGN – TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE THIS WORK! THIS YEAR CALOUNDRA MUSIC FESTIVAL WILL BE FREE FROM DISPOSABLE PLASTIC WATER BOTTLES. • We’re asking all festival-goers, crew and artists to bring a re-usable water bottle to the festival. • It’s now even easier to get fresh clean water with multiple refill stations across the festival site. • Banning the sale of bottled water across the festival. • Reef Check Australia will host water refill stations. Chilled and filtered spring water will be available to purchase from three site locations. • Unitywater Hydration Station near the water fountains also has town water on tap FREE for festival goers. • Providing quality re-usable bottles for sale, for those who forget to BYO. Water Refill stations are hosted by Reef Check Australia. The aim is to reduce plastic water bottle waste, encourage the use of reusable water bottles and help raise awareness and funds for these local charities protecting our waterways. WASTE: All vendor stalls must use bio-degradable cornstarch, paper or cloth carry bags (no plastic). Cutlery, plates, straws etc must be a biodegradable product (paper, wood or cornstarch) and no glass is to be used. Only biodegradable, ecologically sound detergents and cleaning fluids are permitted for use. REUSE & RECYCLE: Recycling bins are available across the festival site with some funky signage so you can’t miss them! Sustainable signage continues to grow across the site at Caloundra Music Festival. The Signology team has used recycled and reclaimed materials (fence palings, an old cubby house, second hand pallets, old clothing, etc) to create signage that can be reused year after year. Sustainable tote bags are new this year! CMF is partnering with Sunshine Coast TAFE fashion students to turn pre-loved singlets and t-shirts into tote bags! Buy a pre-made upcycled tote bag or BYO singlet and they’ll transform it while you wait! Find them in the Funky Forest. FREE storage of your CMF tote is available in the festival lockers located at Customer Service.

Getting to & fro CMF is held at Kings Beach Park in Caloundra, justt over an hour’s e beautiful drive north of Brisbane on the southern end of the Sunshine Coast. Staying in Caloundra is the best way to make the most of your festival experience. Accommodation ranges from festival campsites to high-end 5 star resorts. TRAVEL TO CMF THE ECO-FRIENDLY WAY! Perhaps you can even mix and match a few options to create your perfect travel method! WALK OR CYCLE If you live or are staying in Caloundra, this is the ideal way to get around! JEBEDIAH

ebediah were pioneers of the late ‘90s punk rock grunge scene. In 1997 it all started going a little nuts for the band, playing over 150 shows and releasing breakthrough album Slightly Odway. With tracks like Leaving Home, Military Strongman, Teflon and Harpoon, it is little wonder that the album debuted in the national top ten. Their reputation for scorching live shows proceeded them and Jebediah were named towards the top of the bills for Big Day Out, Livid and Homebake. The Perth pack kept kicking goals, with follow up release Of Someday Shambles hitting all the right notes, it debuted at #2 in Australia and took the band to international status. Third album, Jebediah and fourth album, the independently released Braxton Hicks also debuted at the pointy end of the ARIA charts featuring kicking singles Fall Down, No Sleep and First Time respectively. Taking a seven-year break from touring, the band had quietly continued to write together; 2011‘s ARIA nominated Kosciuszko was the result. Singles Lost My Nerve, She’s Like A Comet and Control promptly took over the airwaves of Australia as the band undertook an extensive and blistering sold out tour, solidifying their place in Australia’s live rock scene. Triple J’s recent Hottest 100 of the 20 Years saw Harpoon and Leaving Home mark their place in Aus music and the hearts of many. Jebediah are not to be missed.

A beautiful conduit connecting people to one another and to the planet we live on, Xavier Rudd’s music has impacted the world for over a decade – spanning back over seven studio albums, multiple ARIA nominations and more high-rotation singles than you’d care to count – with his most recent single, Follow The Sun, reaching Gold status and landing in last year’s triple j Hottest 100. A key figure in bringing the message and music of our indigenous people to a broader audience, Xavier Rudd’s spirituality is a powerful force for positive change, and he is widely regarded as an Australian icon.

The follow-up to 2010’s Glow, Start Livin’ is a nine-track selection of folk-infused songs that sweetly reflect the simplicity ... of their recording. With its smooth showcasing of Frankenreiter’s rich, honey-thick vocals and masterful guitar work, Start Livin’ bears all the intimacy of an impromptu back-porch performance and the tenderness of a treasured love letter.

After a three-year hiatus, Wally De Backer (now often known as Gotye), Kris Schroeder and Tim Heath will be reactivating their unconventional take on pop at the CMF. Bassist Kris Schroeder said the band’s sound is completely up to audience interpretation but lays parallel to the undone song-based hums of The Beatles and Crowded House. “We just play the songs – we don’t have a particular sound. We started out ten years ago in rock and roll and have branched out in all kinds of ways. It’s kind of where the mood takes us,” Schroeder said. After a decade of wooing both international and native audiences, the Melbourne-based boys are excited to join the CMF line-up. “We’ve got some new stuff we want to show off and some bits & pieces we want to give a burl,” Schroeder said. - Fiona Willett

n 1997 Reuben and his wife Grace were forced to flee their home in Freetown, Sierra Leone, and sought refuge at the Kalia camp in Guinea. “Everybody was troubled because of the war. So I said to myself, well instead of thinking about what has happened we should move forward. I started to sing with my wife,” said Reuben. Reuben and Grace sang to the refugees to lift their spirits. After recruiting Fancis ‘Franco’ John Langa the Sierra Refugee All Stars was formed. As they went from camp to camp their band members grew, and there are now six members. “We try to bring out sensitive issues that are affecting

the world. It is all of our responsibility that the masses are suffering. We bring our positive messages into the world so we can expect a positive change in the world. And most importantly, bring about peace,” said Reuben. Since then the band has released four albums (Like a Refugee, Positive Revolution, Rise & Shine and Radio Salone) and a documentary (Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars). Rueben and the band are playing three exclusive Australian shows in Caloundra. The band is excited to come to Australia and want to see the joy of the Australian people and keep them happy. n 2007 three young guys from Germany started to rock the world of the 21st century with the rock’n’roll of the 1950s and 1960s. Two records, with more than one million sold CDs, nine platinum and eight golden awards and two sold out European tours later, you clearly can say: mission accomplished! The release of their debut album Strike! in May 2009 ignited BASEBALLS mania all across Europe. The band held top positions in the European charts for weeks, achieved record-breaking sales: 4x platinum in Finland, platinum in Sweden, Norway and Holland,

double-platinum in Switzerland, silver in the UK and gold in Germany. On April 15 the winners of the German Echo Award 2010 for Best Newcomer released their second album, Strings’n’Stripes. Sam, Basti and Digger remain true to themselves and their love of the sounds of the fifties and sixties, this time around presenting their own versions of California Girls (Katy Perry), Quit Playing Games (Backstreet Boys) and Paparazzi (Lady Gaga).

The group is led by Ivan Neville who is the son of Aaron Neville and nephew to the other legendary New Orleans Neville Brothers. Ivan rips it up on B3 and clav along with Tony Hall and Nick Daniels III (double bass and vocals), Ian Neville (guitar) and Nikki Glaspie (drums and vocals). “We always keep the spontaneity going, that’s something I love about this band,” says Ivan. “We can funk it out with the best of them, but we also like to showcase how all sorts of music can come together and push the boundaries of what funk music is.” With their new release Dirty Word the band is re-imagining the genre of funk by integrating soul, R&B and rock n’ roll. “If we can create an escape, give people a reason to get down and forget their problems, then we’re doing what we set out to do,” Nikki added. -Tamarra Allwood

Southern Sun is ample evidence of the band’s recent time spent tuning in to — among others — Bruce Springsteen, Paul Simon and the musical firm of Fleetwood Mac. “There’s something really magical in their songs,” says the band’s singer/ songwriter Dave Hosking. “Hopefully something rubbed off.” “Sharing some music from the 70s was a clear decision that we made,” guitarist Killian Gavin says of the band’s latest work. “What we’ve made feels older and more rounded than the first record. ver the course of their 30-plus year career, The Holmes Brothers (bassist/vocalist Sherman Holmes, guitarist/ pianist/vocalist Wendell Holmes, drummer/vocalist and brotherin-spirit Popsy Dixon) have been feeding the souls of their devoted and ever-growing fan base with a joyous and moving blend of blues, gospel, soul, R&B, rock ‘n’ roll and country. Their amazing three-part harmony singing, mixing Wendell’s gruff and gravelly vocals with Popsy’s soaring falsetto and Sherman’s rich baritone, brings the soul and spirit of gospel music into everything they perform. Equally gripping is the rhythmic foundation laid down by Sherman’s bass playing and Popsy’s drumming, perfectly complementing Wendell’s blues-soaked guitar solos and church-inspired piano playing. The band easily blends Saturday night’s roadhouse rock with the gospel fervor and harmonies of Sunday morning’s church service.
